Ottawa Faces Elimination

from the National Post,

A shirtless man in a red cape and metal helmet made one of his final, grating appearances on the big screens above centre ice midway through the third period on Monday night. He was dressed to look like the face of the Ottawa Senators, and he exhorted the crowd to make noise: “Sens Army, our backs are against the wall - we must defend, defend, defend.”

But the man, like the team, failed.

Winning Without Alfredsson

by Alanah on 04/11/08 at 10:11 AM

From Bruce Garrioch at the Ottawa Sun,

The word is if Alfredsson tried to come back now he wouldn’t be much help anyway. He hasn’t been on the ice since he suffered the injury a week ago against Toronto for a reason: He’s not ready to skate.

The Senators have to prove they can win without Alfredsson.

They didn’t do it this season by going 3-9 in the 12 regular-season games he missed as a result of various injuries—including his hip and groin.

“He’s a key part of our team, but we can win without him,” said Senators centre Jason Spezza.

from the CP via Yahoo,

‘But Alfredsson took some of the heat off the Toronto Maple Leafs forward Friday by blaming himself for winding up on the receiving end of a blind-side hit from Bell that will force the him to miss the Senators’ final regular-season game and at least the start of the playoffs should they qualify.

“I think it’s more myself (at fault),” said Alfredsson, who’s out with an unspecified upper-body injury and a knee injury, although he denied he suffered a concussion. “Usually I’m aware of what’s going on around me and I had no idea he was coming.”

Senators Win, But Lose Two

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,

But if the Senators make the playoffs, they’ll be lucky to have enough healthy bodies. Captain Daniel Alfredsson, who is believed to have a concussion, exited two minutes into the second with the club called an “upper body injury” and centre Mike Fisher left with a leg injury in the first period.

Senators assistant coach Greg Carvel told the club’s pay-per-view broadcast that both injuries were “serious” and that neither player would be in the lineup tonight against the Bruins.

fromm the Ottawa Citizen,

“We haven’t played well for some time here,” said captain Daniel Alfredsson, who says the meeting was called collectively by all players. “We have to make sure in these last three games ... it’s a test for us to see what kind of character we have. How can we get this turned around? It’s possible (Washington could catch us), if we lost all three. We have to try and win at least two of the three and try to get some momentum for the playoffs. It has been a crazy season. We got off to such a great start, but we have not been able to handle the expectations that came with it.”

Alfredsson Takes A Shot

from the Ottawa Citizen,

Once he had that treatment, he was faced with questions about his leadership abilities, brought on by some pointed criticisms from Rob Ray, the former Senator and longtime Buffalo Sabres heavyweight, during a session on the TSN program Off the Record.

“I don’t think he’s a stand up, rah, rah guy in the dressing room,” said Ray. “He’s a leader on the ice. That’s a big problem with this team ... even when I was there, there was no one person to stand up and take charge, and bat a head when it needed to happen. They’re all tight and very close friends. Alfie’s a great player when things are going easy ... he came alive against Buffalo (in Tuesday’s 6-3 win) when Buffalo eased off after being ahead 3-1, but where was he in the first two periods?”

Alfredsson Concerned About His Back

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,

While Alfredsson thought he was just going to miss a couple of days as a result of the cross-check from Ducks defenceman Francois Beauchemin, the Senators’ leading scorer just isn’t ready to return to the lineup.

“It’s doubtful (he’ll play tonight) as it feels now. It’s been going slower than I thought it would, which is very frustrating,” Alfredsson said yesterday. “I still have trouble moving freely. I experience pain when I try to move too quick or do stuff. It’s getting better, but not at the rate or speed I would like.”

Alfredsson plans to meet with Senators Dr. Don Chow either tomorrow or Monday in Ottawa.

“I thought it was spasms and it would be gone in a couple of days, but that hasn’t been the case,” said Alfredsson.

via the Ottawa Sun,

The Senators will be without captain Daniel Alfredsson tonight.

He was able to ride the stationary bike at the HP Pavillion in San Jose this morning, but he won’t be in the lineup tonight against the Sharks.

Alfredsson wasn’t on the ice for the morning skate and GM/coach Bryan Murray revealed afterwards he wasn’t going to be ready to play.

Alfredsson Having Fun

From David Shoalts in the Globe & Mail blog,

“The game itself is the most fun,” he said on Friday. “Skills competition, I can’t say that I enjoy too much because I’m not really good at anything. The game is the most fun.”

Even more fun, Alfredsson said on Saturday, is just being at the game.

“It’s an ego trip, to be honest” he said. “Everyone tells you how great you are.”

Alfredsson- Hat Trick and 4 Assists

via the Ottawa Sun,

“It was a fun night,” said Alfredsson. “Our line played well, we moved the puck, created chances and had them running around a bit.

“The way I look at it, you add them up at the end of your career ... maybe it will be ‘you remember that night in Tampa?’ When they come, you take them. It doesn’t happen that often.”

Alfredsson Out For Tonight

from the Ottawa Sun,

The Senators will have to go without their leader tonight.

Senators coach John Paddock confirmed this morning that captain Daniel Alfredsson will not suit up against the Tampa Bay Lightning and he’s 50/50 for tomorrow’s visit to Philadelphia.

“It’s not life-threatening,” said Paddock. “He’ll play this week. He’s going to try skating tomorrow. I’d say he’s 50/50.

The Missing Goal

from the Ottawa Sun,

“I should have had 30 last year. They stole one,” Alfredsson said—at least pretending (we’re never quite sure with him anymore) that the injustice of it all may have cost him a night’s sleep—following yet another standout individual performance at a morning skate. “The last game of the year, they didn’t give me the 30th, but I tipped it. I think they gave it to (Jason) Spezza or (Christoph Schubert).”

Did you go to anyone? Did you voice a complaint and try to correct the injustice?

“Yeah, but I guess because the game wasn’t in HD, they couldn’t tell,” said Alfredsson. “I never got it.”

Alfredsson Has Advice For Emery

by Paul on 12/28/07 at 08:33 AM
Comments (0)

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,

After swinging his goalie stick and sending some Gatorade bottles on the club’s bench flying, Emery tossed his stick into the stands before heading to the dressing room.

Alfredsson said last night if Emery wants to get back in net he has to work harder in practice and earn a start from coach John Paddock because the current situation is frustrating for everyone involved.

“To get considered for a start, (the coaching staff) is looking for (Emery) to show that he wants to be in there,” said Alfredsson, who didn’t see the incident. “You have to work hard in practice to show that you want to play. That’s what most players do when they’re not playing and the goalies are no different.”

added 12:42pm, via the Globe and Mail,

The Ottawa Senators held an open practice on Friday morning in Ottawa with only one goaltender on the ice.

Ray Emery, who ended Thursday morning’s skate with an on-ice tantrum, was nowhere to be seen a day later. He was sent home by team officials after showing up at the rink.

added 12:50pm, from the Ottawa Sun,

“I told him to go home because he wasn’t feeling good,” said Senators coach John Paddock after practice. Paddock added he expects Emery to be back at practice on Saturday.

“It’s always serious,” snapped the captain. “It’s professional sports. If you don’t win, you suck.”

Money Lost

by Paul on 11/26/07 at 10:32 AM
Comments (1)

from Rand Simon of the Hockey News,

If Alfredsson does play under his contract through 2011-12, he will have earned a total of $26.6 million in salary (less any escrow) over the seven seasons since the lockout. Without the 24 per cent rollback, Alfredsson would have received $35 million during that time frame. So, including the $5 million lost from the 2004-05 season, the lockout cost Alfredsson $13.4 million in salary.

On top of that, Alfredsson has signing bonus payments in his contract and the lost rolled back amount is another $1.155 million.

In total, Alfredsson is potentially down more than $14.5 million. To make matters worse, it is worth pointing out that in August 2004 Alfredsson was getting $1.31 Canadian for every U.S. dollar earned and not the 98 or 99 cents he gets today.

Alfredsson Suffering With Sore Groin

via the AP,

Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson has a groin injury and isn’t expected to play Saturday against Philadelphia.

Ottawa’s top scorer was injured during Thursday’s shootout loss to Pittsburgh. He had three assists in the game, but wasn’t able to take a shootout attempt.

Senators coach John Paddock says his captain is day-to-day, but “I don’t think that day-to-day includes playing tomorrow.”

Not All About The Money For Alfredsson

by Paul on 11/15/07 at 08:14 AM

from Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun,

Daniel Alfredsson may very well be the best all-around player in the NHL, but in collecting a salary of $4.338 million (all terms US), he’ll be just the fourth- highest-paid Senator this season....

“I’m not going to renegotiate my deal,” said Alfredsson, who shrugs at not being the highest-paid player in his dressing room. “That’s the way it goes. There’s a lot of facts that go into it. I signed before the lockout and took a 24% cut right away. I was part of the process, to do that deal. Both me and Billy Guerin thought about it, we both had just signed long-term deals ... you’re going to lose a lot of money ... and that’s a big part of it. You put another 24% more on my contract and it’s not a bad deal at all.

Alfredsson Now A Complete Player

from Chris Stevenson of the Ottawa Sun,

In an interesting self-observation a couple of minutes later, as we talked about Alfredsson playing the best hockey of his career at a time when many other players begin to wane, Alfredsson said he used to be his own worst critic, but had eased up. The philosophy he had come to adopt for himself was the message he gave his teammates Saturday.

“I might look back at a game and I might have played well, but I misread that play or I did that wrong,” said Alfredsson. “Where I’ve gotten better is I used to take that too hard, then try and make it up and try to do too much. I’m smarter now about how I play the game and that allows me to be more effective.”

Alfredsson Off To Fast Start

from Chris Stevenson of the Ottawa Sun,

“It’s like he had a week off instead of three months. He’s continued right from where he left off in the playoffs,” Senators coach John Paddock said of Alfredsson. “I couldn’t come up with enough superlatives to describe the way he’s playing.”

“He has been just unbelievable to start the season. Everything he touches ... he’s skating well, shooting well. He just sees the ice so well,” said Senators centre Mike Fisher of his captain.

Alfredsson stood out on a night when the Senators got a great team effort. The penalty killing was flawless again and is now a perfect 20-for-20 on the season.
