Will Ottawa Owner Get His Money Back?
by Paul on 01/26/12 at 06:54 PM ET
Comments (1)
from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,
Eugene Melnyk will finally face off with Dany Heatley in court once the two sides can agree on a date.
League sources confirmed Thursday, almost three years after filing a grievance to get the $4-million bonus the Senators owner paid to Heatley on July 1, 2009, the case is inching closer to being heard.
Independent arbitrator George Nicolau had agreed to a March 23 hearing in New York, but the date didn’t work for either side and is being rescheduled — soon.
As first reported by QMI Agency in November, 2009, Melnyk filed the grievance shortly after Heatley refused to lift his no-movement clause and accept a deal to the Edmonton Oilers (for Dustin Penner, Andrew Cogliano and Ladislav Smid).

Wild Need More Goals From Heatley
by Paul on 01/10/12 at 02:56 PM ET

from Chip Scroggins of the StarTribune,
Dany Heatley scored 26 goals for the San Jose Sharks last season and described it as a “bad year all the way through.”
Halfway through his debut season with the Wild, Heatley is on pace to score 26 goals again, but nobody inside the organization seems overly concerned. Why?
“Everybody probably came into the season saying he’s going to score 50 goals for us,” coach Mike Yeo said. “But the thing I would say is he’s been very consistent. He’s been getting chances every game. He’s a great pro the way he comes to the rink and leads our group every game. And every day he’s playing a very responsible two-way game.”
That’s probably not music to the ears of Wild fans longing to see more scoring punch from the team overall and Heatley in particular. Heatley leads the team in goals (13) and is second in scoring (28), but he hasn’t beaten goalies with the consistency expected of a two-time 50-goal scorer.

Looking on the Left

We continue our preview of the top players at each position with a look at the left wing. In my auction league with bidding that is taking place all month, I am currently looking for a low-cost left wing option, of which there are plenty. But here are the options that you can reasonably pay top dollar for or feel comfortable drafting with an early-round pick.

Wild Has Their Scorer
by Alanah McGinley on 07/05/11 at 02:37 PM ET

From Michael Russo at the Star-Tribune:
Heatley scored 26 goals and 64 points last season for the Sharks. That’s not a down year for most, especially when you consider those numbers would have led the Wild.
But this is Dany Heatley—a two-time 50-goal scorer, a point-a-game player, someone who possesses one of hockey’s most toxic shots.
General Manager Chuck Fletcher is confident Heatley will fill the net.
“His track record speaks for itself,” Fletcher said. “He’s a proven goal scorer.”
And the Wild is starved for goals. In his end-of-the-season analysis, Fletcher believed the Wild had too many pass-first players. So on Sunday, he asked one of them—Havlat—to waive his no-move clause.

Many Thought These Contracts Would Be Impossible To Move
by Paul on 07/04/11 at 07:12 PM ET
Comments (8)
from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
On the day the NHL season ended, if you’d listed all the contracts that absolutely positively couldn’t be dumped on anyone by the time training camps opened in September, you’d probably have settled on two: Brian Campbell’s eight-year, $56.8-million (all currency U.S.) deal with the Chicago Blackhawks and Dany Heatley’s six-year, $45-million deal with the San Jose Sharks.
Campbell’s contract came in at a $7.1-million annual average and, even though he’s coming off a decent season, it wasn’t $7.1-million worth of decent. As for Heatley, whose contract runs out in 2014 and has a cap hit of $7.5-million a season, his struggles to score in the playoffs on behalf of a Sharks team that was entertaining Stanley Cup dreams were well-documented. Heatley had had two erratic seasons under his belt in San Jose. The plans to play him with Joe Thornton stalled at the end of the first season and in 2010-11, playing with Logan Couture and Ryan Clowe, the two-time 50-goal scorer sniped just 26 times in the regular season – and his playoff numbers were worse.
Who, in his right mind, would take on those financial albatrosses? It just wasn’t going to happen – that is, until it did.

Wild Night
by Paul on 07/04/11 at 08:25 AM ET

from Michael Russo of the Star Tribune,
Nine days after the earthquake came the aftershock.
In another Wild-San Jose Sharks blockbuster, General Manager Chuck Fletcher acquired much-maligned but potentially lethal goal scorer Dany Heatley on Sunday night after Martin Havlat waived his no-move clause to head west.
The trade that jolted the NHL late in the evening came after the Wild acquired 24-year-old goal scorer Devin Setoguchi and two other pieces from the Sharks during the NHL draft June 24 for defenseman Brent Burns and a second-round pick.
“We are excited to add Dany Heatley, one of the top goal scorers in the NHL, to our team,” Fletcher, who will be available during a Monday morning conference call, said in a news release. “He is a quality player who has averaged more than a point a game in his nine-year career.”
Heatley, 30, long a controversial figure who two years ago asked out of Ottawa and before that Atlanta, has seen declining production since consecutive 50-goal seasons in 2005-06 and 2006-07 with the Senators.
continued and Russo also shoots down the made up Kaberle rumor signing with the Wild. You have to remember folks, these so called rumors from sources are done just to collect site hits.

Heatley On His Suspension
by Paul on 03/17/11 at 03:41 PM ET
Comments (3)
from Mark Emmons of Working the Corners,
Here are some quotes with my paraphrasing of the questions from the media scrum.
Your thoughts on the suspension? “It was definitely a bad penalty at a bad time in the game. But I did not hit him in the head. But that’s the decision they made, and I have to live with it.”
Bad timing, considering the NHL general managers were in Florida discussing head hits this week? “Yeah it wasn’t a real smart play and it wasn’t real great timing. But it is what it is, and I’ve got to live with it.”...
What do you think of Ott calling it a cheap play? “I’m not going to get into a war of words with him. Obviously he’s taken his fair share of suspensions in the league. For him to all of the sudden have a halo on his head is kind of funny.”

Sharks Could Use A Hot Heatley
by Paul on 03/05/11 at 06:41 AM ET

from David Pollak of the Mercury News,
For the highest-paid Shark, it has been a season where production is down and the volume of criticism is up.
Dany Heatley’s two key goals in the Sharks’ 3-1 victory over the Red Wings show his scoring touch has not deserted him. But he wasn’t ready to say Friday whether that Detroit game is a harbinger of what lies ahead.
“Who knows,” he said. “I think it’s just about getting chances, and a couple went in last night. That’s over, and you’ve got to get going tomorrow again.”
Those two goals give Heatley just 22 for the season—third highest on the Sharks, but a figure that puts him on pace for only 27. While that figure marks a successful season for most players, that number is well below the 39 he scored a year ago and an even bigger drop-off from the 45 he averaged before that in four seasons with the Ottawa Senators.

Heatley Prepared For His Return To Ottawa
by Paul on 11/29/10 at 03:08 PM ET
Comments (1)
from Ian Mendes of Sportsnet,
Heatley’s return to Ottawa this week marks the first time the San Jose Sharks have paid a visit to Scotiabank Place since the blockbuster trade between the two teams in September 2009. Senators fans circled the December 2nd date on the calendar when the NHL schedule was released in June, giving them a chance to voice their displeasure towards Heatley. The winger admits that he also looked at the date this summer and knows that he will be the target of the fans’ wrath on Thursday night.
“Obviously, I looked at that date for sure. There’s going to be some booing and things going on. But that’s fans and that’s hockey. People pay a lot of money to go to games and that’s fine,” said Heatley.
Heatley is also certain to face some pointed and direct questions from the Ottawa media, whom he has not seen since he was traded on the opening day of the 2009 training camp.
While some suggest that Heatley will avoid the media spotlight in Ottawa, he promises to make himself accessible to answer any questions.
“I’m not going to be frosty. I’m going to come in and answer questions,” he said. “That’s my job as a player and then I’ll go about my business and play the game. We’ll leave it up to the media in Ottawa to see how they are.”

Sharks Could Use Some Goals From Heatley
by Paul on 05/18/10 at 05:33 AM ET

via Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,
Sharks winger Dany Heatley has two goals in his past 18 games, including the regular season. San Jose needs him to put the puck in the net in the West finals against the Blackhawks.
“He does,” Sharks coach Todd McLellan said Monday. “You know, that’s why Dany’s a part of our organization. That’s what makes him a tremendous player, is the fact he had the ability to put the puck in the net. I’m going to answer the question with a collective reply. I think we all have to find a way to get one more past [Antti] Niemi and not leave it on Dany Heatley’s shoulders.
“But he does have to find a way to put the puck in the net, especially on the power play. That’s what he’s here for. That’s what we believe he can do. I believe he will get that done as the series goes on.”

Reaction To Heatley On Team Canada
by Paul on 02/17/10 at 06:22 PM ET

from James Gordon of Hockey Capital,
So I was watching Canada dominate Norway after a slow start Tuesday night and my wife, who is a rabid Ottawa Senators fan, didn’t seem to know how to react to Dany Heatley’s two goals in the first game. If you’re new to this blog and only pay attention to hockey when the Olympics are on, Heatley mysteriously demanded a trade from the capital last summer and was dealt to the San Jose Sharks at the beginning of training camp.
continue & James wants feedback from Senators fans on how they feel about Heatley on Team Canada. I may as well ask Oilers fans (or any other fan base) the same question.

No Bad Karma For Heatley
by Paul on 11/29/09 at 08:55 AM ET

from Allen Panzeri of the Ottawa Sun,
It’s certainly not what any fan of the Ottawa Senators would have wished for Dany Heatley.
They would have liked to see any number of calamities strike the 28-year-old left-winger for the agony he put the city through last summer, when he suddenly demanded to be traded, refused a trade to the Edmonton Oilers and finally accepted one to the San Jose Sharks, a team that was on his list of preferred destinations.
Such gall deserved to be punished—and surely would, if all was right with the world.
Perhaps his scoring touch would disappear. Perhaps he’d forget how to skate. Perhaps it would start to snow in San Jose.
Alas, it’s time to give up on any dream of any divine retribution. In fact, this situation is as close to perfect as it could be for Heatley.

from Robert Tychkowski of the Edmonton Sun, Injury, meet insult.
If the beaten and bedraggled Edmonton
Oilers can lift their faces out of the muck long enough, they’ll look up and see Dany Heatley tonight.
The same Dany Heatley who held the organization’s pride hostage for 30 uncomfortable days last summer. The same Dany Heatley who has a league-leading 18 goals for the league-leading San Jose Sharks.
The Oilers took a terrible PR beating for publicly kowtowing to a guy who never wanted to come here, for letting their own guys twist in the wind for a month while giving a petulant winger the keys to their dignity.
And now, as they stumble around rock bottom searching for their fifth win in 17 games, along comes the prima donna on the first place team who said ‘I told you so.’
Perfect.

More On The Heatley Grievance
by Paul on 11/04/09 at 04:10 PM ET
Comments (1)
from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
Publicly, the NHL’s position – on the rare occasions when commissioner Gary Bettman will discuss the NHLPA’s trials and tribulations – is that the league believes a strong union is good for business.
Deep down, it is hard to imagine they truly believe that. Otherwise, would they have not have discouraged Sens owner Eugene Melnyk from filing a complaint that seems like a sure-fire loser, given that Heatley – whatever you may think about him asking for a trade after negotiating a no-movement clause - did not technically breach his contract….
In some ways, the NHL has inadvertently done the players a favour by heading down this path. Just in case the players association required further evidence of the need for strong leadership heading into the next CBA talks, this pre-emptive shot across the union’s bow can only reinforce that belief.
And the NHLPA does have one card to play – the option of extending the CBA to 2012, or for an extra year beyond the original six-year term, to prepare for the battle that lies ahead.
That extension, you’d think, is as good as done…

Heatley Grievance Can’t Be Good For NHL/NHLPA Relations
by Paul on 11/03/09 at 08:59 PM ET
Comments (1)
from Allen Panzeri of the Ottawa Citizen,
In less than two years, the National Hockey League and the NHL Players’ Association will have to begin negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement, which ends in September 2011.
Against that backdrop, it can’t be a good thing to have them facing off now in a dispute over a $4-million signing bonus paid to one of the game’s superstars. But that’s what they have on their hands, a battle that could set the emotional level for the next round of contract talks….
Even if it was Heatley who demanded a trade, he did have a no-movement clause in his contract, which did give him the right to veto a trade, however unpalatable that may seem. Melnyk might be stuck by the very contract he approved for Heatley.
However, at the time the possibility of a grievance was first raised in early July, league deputy commissioner Bill Daly said there are “strong grounds upon which a claim can be pursued. The Ottawa franchise believes it has been damaged.”

It’s payback time for Eugene Melnyk.
Sun Media has learned the Senators owner was so furious with being forced to shell out a $4-million bonus to Dany Heatley, who refused to accept a trade to the Edmonton Oilers on July 1, he has filed a grievance asking for his money back…
It’s believed Melnyk not only claims the decision by Heatley to kill the deal cost him $4 million, it also hurt the club’s ability to sell season tickets because of the uncertainty in the Senators camp.

Heatley Just Happy To Be A Shark
by Paul on 10/22/09 at 08:02 AM ET
Comments (1)
from Dan Rosen of NHL.com,
Dany Heatley is moving on and loving life in San Jose, remaining unmoved by the public opinion that his reputation has taken a serious hit after a tumultuous and controversial summer that included trade demands and trade rejections.
Heatley’s approach may seriously irk the passionate fans in Ottawa and Edmonton, but that’s not what he is trying to do, nor is it something he even cares about at this point. His focus, plain and simple, is on helping the Sharks win games and performing well enough to hopefully get a call from Hockey Canada sometime in December.
“I don’t know if I needed a fresh start, but after the summer it was nice that something happened,” Heatley, who was dealt from Ottawa to San Jose on Sept. 12, told NHL.com. “If you want to call it a fresh start that’s fine, but it’s not so much that I had a down year and needed to go somewhere else to have a fresh start. There were issues that I felt made it best that we go our separate ways. All I can say is I’m happy to be a Shark.”

How Will Heatley Respond?
by Paul on 10/19/09 at 07:25 AM ET
Comments (0)
from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
Let’s see how San Jose Sharks left winger Dany Heatley handles this delicious new career challenge. With the Sharks’ power play stuck in an early season slump, coach Todd McLellan bumped Heatley down to the No.2 unit for last Saturday’s game against the New York Islanders.
Predictably, the move to reunite last year’s top unit of Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau and Devin Setoguchi paid immediate dividends as the Sharks went an efficient 2-for-3 with the man advantage, with Thornton turning in a virtuoso performance. Heatley, remember, demanded a trade of out Ottawa last season after his role was “diminished” by Senators’ coach Cory Clouston, in part because he was shifted to the second power-play unit.
Since pouting in his new NHL home is not a viable option, Heatley’s patience – and the ability to bite his tongue – will be put to its first test of the new season, as the Sharks’ six-game trip continues tonight in Manhattan, against the streaking New York Rangers.

from David Pollak of the Mercury News,
“The press this past summer in Canada has been vile,” the elder Heatley said. “They’ve been toxic.”
He talked about a double standard in Ottawa, where nobody seemed troubled in 2005 when the Senators signed forward Marian Hossa to a three-year, $18 million contract and traded him the same day to the Atlanta Thrashers for, coincidentally, Dany Heatley.
“That’s all fine, because that’s business as usual,” Murray Heatley said. “But when a player is not happy in a situation and he asks to get out, it’s ‘Oh, how could he do that, that ungrateful guy. Doesn’t he stick to his word?’ “

from David Pollak of Working the Corners,
Heatley’s first roommate in Atlanta back in 2002, and now a TSN analyst. Turns out Ferraro had a lot more to say than what ended up in the story and Emmons passes the rest along for fodder here. Without further ado, here’s more of what Ray Ferraro had to say about Heatley:
On Dany Heatley’s image around Canada: “Much of the stuff written about him personally, is inaccurate. Now, you can disagree with his decisions — asking for a trade and then turning down the first one. You can say that’s the modern athlete and you probably wouldn’t be wrong. But it doesn’t change that Dany’s a good person and has a good heart.”
Describe Heatley’s mentality: “He’s far more competitive than you might think from his outward appearance. Off the ice, he’s the kind of guy who takes five minutes to walk five feet. He goes at his own pace. On the ice, he loves to score and he will do whatever is required to get himself in that position.

Will GMs Avoid NTC In The Future?
by Paul on 09/17/09 at 12:33 PM ET

from Jim Kelley at Sports Illustrated,
In the end, Heatley may have gotten what he wanted, but he paid a price that will forever tarnish his reputation and diminish his stock among GMs and especially coaches who will think long and hard about taking him, and players like him, into their ranks. He also created a sense among GMs and owners that they no longer have to play the role of victim and that the process must change. It’s a fairly safe bet that it will.
Don’t for a moment think that the next player who wants a big salary and a no-trade, no-movement clause will easily get it. Not without the name Dany Heatley being thrown back in his face.

Heatley May Have Had Issues With Former Teammates

from James Gordon of the Ottawa Citizen,
Dany Heatley hasn’t revealed all of his reasons for wanting out of Ottawa yet, but a rift with certain teammates may have been one of them.
Senators general manager Bryan Murray suggested there was more than personal issues with coach Cory Clouston behind Heatley’s trade request.
“It wasn’t only Cory,” Murray told Toronto radio station The Fan 590 earlier in the day. “I think it was the role on the team a little bit, I think it was ice time a little bit, I think there was, you know, maybe it was the relationship with a couple of the individual players.”
Murray downplayed that assertion somewhat when he spoke to the Citizen later in the day, but confirmed it was among Heatley’s complaints.

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
So you wonder if, at some point, the San Jose Sharks will take the same desperate steps as the Edmonton Oilers did back in the middle of the summer and in a very public way say thanks but no thanks to a possible trade for Dany Heatley.
Until that happens, the rumour mill will probably continue to churn – as it did Thursday night, when ESPN reported the completion of a three-way trade involving the Sharks, Ottawa Senators and the Los Angeles Kings, a deal that was roundly denied all around.
Still, one can imagine that Senators general manager Bryan Murray will be feverishly working the phones for the next 24 hours to make something happen – on the grounds that trading Heatley in advance of training camp is the surest way to limit the disruptive effects of the drama on the team’s 2009-10 season.

Who Would You Want On Your Team- Heatley Or Kessel?
by Paul on 09/09/09 at 10:52 AM ET

from Ryan Kennedy of The Hockey News,
Two snipers, one question: Dany Heatley or Phil Kessel?
Who would you take?
With NHL training camps inching closer by the day, there are, by my math, roughly 90-plus goals worth of uncertainty still floating around out there in the unhappy Senator and unsigned RFA Bruin.
Will one or both be wearing new uniforms when the season starts? Probably not. It seems more certain with each day that Heatley will begin the year in Ottawa and, despite some draft pick shuffling in Toronto, Kessel remains a valued commodity in Boston.

Are The Rangers A Destination For Heatley?
by Paul on 09/09/09 at 06:53 AM ET

from Wayne Scanlan of the Ottawa Citizen,
There may only be days to spare, but it remains to be seen whether the reluctant Senator will actually have to show his face in Ottawa. It would certainly appear that no trade is imminent, but the rumours continue to come at us from all angles.
One that made a lot of sense, and still does, involved the New York Rangers and two of their good, young players, defenceman Marc Staal and forward Brandon Dubinsky.
Senators general manager Bryan Murray has always liked Staal, a big, smart defenceman with ideal family bloodlines. The younger brother of Eric and Jordan Staal (with one more bro to come) makes just $765,000 this season before becoming a restricted free agent.

Heatley Prepared To Attend Sens Camp
by Paul on 09/08/09 at 05:37 AM ET
Comments (1)
from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,
The Senators winger confirmed he’ll be in Ottawa later this week in time to participate in the club’s annual golf tournament Friday at Kanata Lakes and take part in medicals Saturday at Scotiabank Place, but his agent, J.P. Barry, told Sun Media he believes there’s still time for a trade.
While Barry isn’t sure if the deal Heatley requested in June from the Senators is going to happen by the weekend, the agent said the disgruntled winger is willing to meet with GM Bryan Murray and coach Cory Clouston before camp opens.
Heatley will also likely have to address the situation with his teammates.
“He’ll do whatever they want him to do and if they want to sit down, that’s fine,” said Barry, who represents Heatley along with Stacey McAlpine. “The situation isn’t any different. He’ll be there when camp opens and he’ll be ready to go. But I want to make clear that there is still time for a deal. This situation isn’t totally in our control.”

The Latest Heatley Talk
by Paul on 09/06/09 at 07:05 AM ET

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,
“Basically, what I’ve said (to other teams) is just tell me what you’re willing to do, I’ll talk to you and we’ll go from there and we’ll make a decision one way or another. But, I can’t say I’m overly optimistic now.”
League sources say the San Jose Sharks and New York Rangers both remain interested, but neither side is close to deal. It’s believed if the Senators are going to make a deal with San Jose, they want Joe Thornton in return.
The Sharks don’t want to move Thornton and have never offered centre Patrick Marleau, either. Another league executive told Sun Media yesterday that “discussions are quiet on the San Jose front and they might resume during training camp.”
via Tim Sassone of Between The Circles at the Chicago Daily-Herald,
As for the Hawks, rumors started Friday and into Saturday that they might be interested in trading for disgruntled Ottawa Senators winger Dany Heatley.
So far this is only a rumor, and it hasn’t been reported anywhere. Funny, I sat near GM Stan Bowman at Friday’s White Sox game and he was working his Blackberry most of the night. Maybe it was just typical GM stuff.

Alfredsson Says Best To Trade Heatley
by Paul on 09/04/09 at 12:53 PM ET
Comments (1)
from Allen Panzeri of the Ottawa Citizen,
The best resolution to the Dany Heatley saga would be to see the disgruntled left wing traded before the start of training camp on Sept. 12, captain Daniel Alfredsson said on Friday.
That would allow the team to prepare for the 2009-10 without the distraction of having to take back a player who doesn’t want to be here.
But whether that happens is a different question.
“Obviously, it would be the best scenario for everyone,” said Alfredsson. “But if it was that easy, I think something would have already been done.
“We’re ready for whatever happens and we’ll make something good out of it.”

Sens GM Thinking Of The Fans

from Allen Panzeri of the Ottawa Citizen,
Bryan Murray said Monday he’s thinking about establishing a drop-dead date for dealing Dany Heatley.
If the disgruntled winger is not dealt by then, said the Ottawa Senators general manager, he’ll be back to play for the team.
“At some point we have to let the fans know,” Murray said during a conference call with fans.

Heatley Too Big A Risk For Kings
by Paul on 08/30/09 at 05:07 PM ET
Comments (2)
from Helene Elliott of the Fabulous Forum at the LA Times,
Acquiring Heatley, who asked to be traded from his first team, Atlanta, and more recently asked the Senators to deal him, would be “too risky,” Lombardi said, an emphatic response that drew applause from the audience assembled at the Nokia Theatre for the final day of the Kings’ first Fan Fest.
Lombardi’s unequivocal answer also should silence the Heatley-to-L.A. rumors that have refused to die, probably fueled by the ample cap space the Kings will have and their need for a pure scorer.
“I would like to focus more on this group reaching its potential,” Lombardi said. “A big part of this process is culture, making an identity. What does it mean to really be a King?”
Apparently, it doesn’t mean whining when things don’t go well and being a bad influence on a group of young players who are only now beginning to become leaders and forge an identity as a team.

Did Heatley Get A Wake-Up Call?
by Paul on 08/28/09 at 08:47 PM ET
Comments (1)
from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail at CTV Olympics,
For now, the consensus around the NHL is that the only reason Heatley hasn’t been traded yet is because no one is prepared to give the Senators full value in return. When the dollar commitment to a player is so staggering, any GM making that sort of deal puts himself squarely on the firing line.
He needs to be absolutely convinced he can make it work. Otherwise, if it blows up in his face, it is the sort of gaffe that can send a GM to the unemployment lines in a hurry. And so, these managers protect themselves by offering a discounted value - and if the deal doesn’t go through, there is no harm in trying.
On Thursday night, during Canada’s intra-squad game at the Pengrowth Saddledome, Heatley made his first public appearance since his trade demand and was roundly booed whenever he touched the puck - or until he scored a goal in the shootout. That had to be a sobering moment for him - to get that sort of reaction in his hometown, where you’d think the fans would be happy that he didn’t end up in Edmonton.
And if that experience has an effect on Heatley, then who knows? Maybe it will act as an awakening for a 28-year-old young man who, up to now, skated away clean through all the trials and tribulations of his life thus far - presumably leaving him with the feeling of being bulletproof, invulnerable.

Clouston On Heatley
by Paul on 08/26/09 at 12:29 PM ET
Comments (0)
from James Gordon of the Ottawa Citizen,
Ottawa Senators coach Cory Clouston denied Wednesday that winger Dany Heatley’s role diminished on his watch.
In a media availability at Scotiabank Place, Clouston suggested any moves he made were meant to help the team, not punish the player.
“As far as a diminished role, it was very slightly diminished and, in my opinion, it wasn’t diminished,” Clouston said. “It was to try and spread out the scoring, as it’s been printed on several occasions.
“Everybody knows (Heatley’s) production actually went up over the last while as well,” he added.

“Any time you haven’t met that person or know the whole story it’s tough to jump to conclusions, but that’s the way it goes,” Heatley said. “That’s what we, as hockey players, have to deal with sometimes, but the summer has been fine. I haven’t really been listening too much. I’m just getting ready for the season.”

Can Heatley & Clouston Work Together?
by Paul on 08/25/09 at 06:37 AM ET

from Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen,
It sure would be fun to be a fly on the wall when Ottawa Senators coach Cory Clouston greets Dany Heatley at training camp.
“How’s it goin’?” Clouston might ask.
“Good. You?” Heatley could reply.
“Not bad. How was your summer?”
Well, maybe not.
Regardless of where you stand on the Heatley mess, it’s hard not to feel at least a touch of sympathy for Clouston.
Judging by the comments of many Senators fans, they might be inclined to drive a Zamboni over Heatley if they were in the coach’s shoes.
added 9:11am, from Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun,
The ‘A’ worn by Dany Heatley stands for Asinine.
The reluctant Senator proved he also worthy of an ‘A’ for Arrogant and ‘P’ for Pompous with all the whining he did on a conference call late last week.
Right now, without further delay, his ‘A’ should officially be removed. If not dramatically ripped off with threads flying everywhere during a ceremony at Parliament Hill, at least quietly by the Senators’ Chris Cook in his equipment office at Scotiabank Place.

Heatley Playing For His Country
by Paul on 08/24/09 at 06:31 AM ET
Comments (2)
from Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun,
Heatley, who wanted a trade out of Ottawa but rejected a deal that would have sent him to Edmonton this summer, admitted he wanted out of the nation’s capital because of his diminished role with the Senators. But the Calgarian was met by a throng of fans wanting him to put pen to picture, card, sweater, shirt or any other article on hand.
“We’re all Canadian hockey players right now,” Heatley said. “We’re all going for one goal. We’re trying for one team, and the Canadian fans know that.”
The uproar surrounding him has created a perception Heatley doesn’t want to play in Canada. But the sniper, who arrived early to spend time with his family, adamantly said that’s not the case.

Let’s Talk Dany
by Paul on 08/18/09 at 06:46 AM ET

from Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen,
The Canadian Olympic men’s hockey team wants no part of any Dany Heatley distraction.
That’s why Hockey Canada’s officials hope to talk to Heatley’s agents, J.P. Barry and Stacey McAlpine, during the next day or two, asking the disgruntled Ottawa Senators star to clear the air before the Olympic team’s summer orientation camp opens Monday in his hometown of Calgary.
“We would obviously prefer to get this out of the way as quickly as possible,” André Brin, Hockey Canada’s manager of communications, said Monday. “We’ll see what happens over the next couple of days, but once the camp starts, we want to worry about the camp. At some point, (Heatley) has to be available.”

Sharks GM “Dragging His Feet” With Heatley Deal
by Paul on 08/04/09 at 06:14 AM ET
Comments (7)
from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,
San Jose Sharks GM Doug Wilson has to decide if he’s serious about acquiring Dany Heatley.
League sources say the Sharks are the only remaining suitor for the disgruntled Senators winger after the Edmonton Oilers dropped out of the running last week.
But a deal won’t happen unless Wilson pays Senators GM Bryan Murray’s asking price — and pays it soon.
As first reported by Sun Media on the weekend, Murray confirmed he still has an “option” to fulfill Heatley’s trade request. However, indications are Wilson is dragging his feet and has to step up his efforts if a trade is going to happen this week.
