Could Heatley End Up In San Jose?

from Mark Purdy of the Mercury News,
You’re probably wondering what the Sharks have to give up for Heatley. The Oilers’ aborted attempt might provide a clue. It was widely reported that the Edmontons offered Ottawa a package of three players — Dustin Penner, Andrew Cogliano and Ladislav Smid. This would be the rough equivalent to the Sharks offering up Milan Michalek, Jonathan Cheechoo and Marc-Edouard Vlasic. One report in the Canadian media had Wilson dangling Cheechoo and Christian Ehrhoff for Heatley. Must not have been enough.
What would be? That brings us to Patrick Marleau, the Sharks’ captain. He also has a no-trade clause, with just one season left on his contract. He took a ton of heat, from me and others, for the playoff loss. Marleau said last month that he could accept the loss of the “C” on his sweater if it helped the team. But he has not mentioned whether he would drop his no-trade rights.
The precise reality is hard to pin down. But surveying the landscape, this is what the situation appears to be:

Let’s Get This Out Of The Way

from Chris Johnston of the CP via the Globe and Mail,
The Dany Heatley situation took another strange twist Friday with Edmonton Oilers GM Steve Tambellini publicly announcing he’s no longer interested in the disgruntled Ottawa Senators sniper.
This may be a first, a GM gathering the media to say he is NOT interested in a player. Yes, we all know the story, but why bring it back into the limelight? I would have just moved on and let the story die.

GettingTo The Bottom Of The Heatley Situation

from the Universal Cynic,
As the Dany Heatley deadlock rolls on, tiny cracks are beginning to appear in the vault of silence that surrounds the truth. The presentation to the public has always been that this is a beef between head coach Cory Clouston and No. 15. But few have found that so-called reason to be totally plausible….
In short, based on what I’ve been told by my sources, I’m starting to lean towards the where-there’s-smoke-there’s-fire side of this situation. History has unfortunately proved that to be the case when it comes to the Sens.

Stop The Madness Edmonton

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,
Don’t the Oilers get it? Their city is the last place in North America (other than presumably Ottawa and perhaps Atlanta) that Heatley wants to live, and their team is the last one in the NHL (insert a disclaimer or two) for which he wants to play.
Enough already with the bribery and the convincing. The team and the city look more than desperate. They are beginning to appear pathetic with their continued pursuit of the player who for good reason has become hockey’s most disdained individual.
We know. The Oilers have to overpay in order to entice players of Heatley’s on-ice pedigree to come to their city, and that’s the reason why Nik Khabibulin was able to get an over-35 contract worth $15 million over four years on July 1.
Still, after repeated attempts to appeal to Heatley (and his sense of . . . sense of what, exactly, reality?), Kevin Lowe, now the club president, should stop debasing himself; Steve Tambellini, the GM, should count himself better off for the repeated rejections; Pat Quinn and Tom Renney, the coaches, should consider themselves fortunate not to have someone in their locker room who first thing will search for the emergency exit.

As reported by Brent Wallace and Chris Stevenson, Dany Heatley will not be showing up to Jason Spezza’s wedding in Ottawa this weekend….
That being said, I just thought I’d throw out this conspiracy theory for you, courtesy of The Driver: What if this was a red herring to throw the media off, and Heatley does manage to pull off a stealth appearance? It may piss off the media something fierce, but who cares?

Paul Kelly Talks About The Heatley Situation
by Paul on 07/23/09 at 08:39 AM ET

from Dave Campbell of 630 CHED,
Speaking exclusively on 630 CHED’s “Inside Sports with Dan Tencer”, NHLPA Executive Director Paul Kelly broke his silence on the Dany Heatley saga on Wednesday night.
“I think that this been kind of twisted in a negative way, which is unfortunate for Dany. I think he’s just a victim of a bad set of circumstances,” said Kelly about Heatley, who requested a trade earlier in the off-season.
“While it is true that he requested a trade, it was not Dany Heatley or his agent that made that fact public. I think Dany’s been unfairly treated by the media and by the (Senators) organization.”
Update 3:05pm ET: More on Heatley from Chris Yzerman at the CP—
While Cory Clouston introduced the newest member of his staff Thursday, talk turned to what’s becoming an old story for the Ottawa Senators coach: what to do about Dany Heatley.
Clouston, speaking on a conference call after the Senators announced the hiring of former NHLer Brad Lauer as an assistant coach, said he’s yet to speak with his disgruntled star. It’s Heatley’s unhappiness over his diminished role and ice time since Clouston took over as head coach that’s been cited as the reason for the left-winger requesting a trade out of Ottawa this spring.
“I’m more than willing to listen and talk to anybody, but nothing’s changed at all,” said Clouston, who was “surprised” at Heatley’s request.

Anything For A Story?

from Ian Mendes of Sportsnet,
There have been some hints from the Ottawa media that suggest several members plan on crashing Jason Spezza’s upcoming wedding in an attempt to force Dany Heatley to speak.
Personally, I think as a media group we need to act with some class and show a little respect for someone’s special day. Unfortunately, those two words (class & respect) aren’t in many reporters’ vocabularies and it’s a big reason why we are wedged comfortably between telemarketers and personal injury lawyers on the scale of likable professionals….
Jason has asked all of us to respect his privacy on his special day and not show up. He’s hired security to make sure no unauthorized guests (hint, hint, media) try to sneak in. He couldn’t make it any more clear: “I’m nice to you guys 364 days a year. Please give me one day off.”
But I can’t shake the nagging feeling that pack journalism is going to rule the day. Everyone is going to be scared that the competition is going to get the scoop, so we better head to the wedding ourselves.

Alfie Wants To Know

from Wayne Scanlan of the Ottawa Citizen,
Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson wants to reach out to Dany Heatley and find out why the disgrunteled winger wants to be traded.
“I want to, because I want to know — it’s all speculation from you guys (media), from myself and from everybody. Dany hasn’t spoken publicly about it. Nobody really knows how everything came to be.
“Was it a process throughout the end of the season that he thought, ‘I would like to do something else,’ or one day I woke up and needed a change. I’m not sure. So, I would definitely like to talk to him. I’ll keep trying to reach him, no question.”
Alfredsson spoke to Ottawa reporters Tuesday on a conference call from Paris, where he is attending NHL Players Association meetings.

Edmonton Still In The Mix For Heatley

from Dan Barnes of the Edmonton Journal,
Heatley has not changed his mind about the issues that provoked the trade demand, which was sent to Murray in the guise of a formal request. He isn’t going to tuck his tail between his legs and slink back into Ottawa, where he tops even the Bloc Quebecois, Canada Revenue Agency and Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s myopic PR man on a list of pariahs.
The only resolution is an acceptable trade proposal and the waiving of Heatley’s no-movement clause, in that order. That sequence of events won’t occur unless and until Murray presents the Heatley camp with at least two more potential destinations in addition to Edmonton.
As luck would have it, a source close to the situation said Friday that Murray is in fact dealing with two other teams who have a genuine interest in acquiring Heatley, but neither team had formalized an offer.

Could Kovalev Convince Heatley To Stay In Ottawa?
by Paul on 07/08/09 at 07:28 AM ET

from Chris Stevenson of the Ottawa Sun,
A Senators team with both Alex Kovalev and Dany Heatley in the lineup could be a reality.
Kovalev said he would be willing to talk to Heatley about his request to be traded and try and get the two-time 50-goal scorer to change his mind.
“He’s a hell of a player. It would definitely be nice for him to stay on the team,” said Kovalev, whose two-year, $10 million contract (all terms US) signed Monday pushed the Senators over the salary cap by about $1.5 million. Keeping both Kovalev and Heatley would necessitate Senators GM Bryan Murray moving some contracts.

from Bruce Deachman of the Ottawa Citizen,
I decided to buy one of these semi-precious Heatley jerseys—now a mere $99.99 plus tax—and wear it on Ottawa’s streets and in its sports bars to see what hockey fans had to say.
No sooner had I taken one off the rack when a customer in his early 50s commented: “You might get beaten up wearing that.”
A young woman looking at non-Heatley sweaters for youngsters, meanwhile, added, “You’re gonna get pelted.”
And as I left the store in the jersey, I heard a third customer, a teenager, call out: “You’re a brave man.”

Has Heatley’s Conduct Damaged The Senators?
by Paul on 07/03/09 at 08:29 AM ET
Comments (0)
from Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star,
The Ottawa Senators have paid a $4 million (all figures U.S.) bonus to the disgruntled winger, as per the July 1 deadline, but find themselves flummoxed by Heatley’s request to be traded and his reluctance to waive his no-trade clause.
The possibility exists, however, that the Senators could file some kind of grievance against their star player.
“They believe that his conduct has damaged the club,” NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told the Star in an email last night. “What, if anything, they decide to do is ultimately up to the Senators.”
If the threat is a pressure tactic to get Heatley to waive his no-trade, it is a flawed one, said NHLPA executive director Paul Kelly. “The league is grasping at straws and would be on shaky legal ground if it pursued a grievance against Dany,” Kelly said.

from Terry Jones of the Edmonton Sun,
Boy, oh, boy oh Dany boy, is this a double whammy of Pronger proportions to the well-bruised Edmonton ego.
Edmonton product Jay Bouwmeester signing with Calgary was the first skate to drop. But that was nothing until Calgary product Dany Heatley played coy when it came to to waiving his no trade clause on a done deal.
The price was a little stiff. But it would have allowed the Edmonton Oilers to unload a stiff and add a 50-goal scorer to play with Ales Hemsky.
But now young gun Andrew Cogliano, Ladislav Smid and Dustin Penner know the Oilers had traded them, which is only minor damage.
But now the world knows that a Calgarian would apparently rather take the spit and abuse of coming off as a bigger jerk than he already appeared to be to play in the city a three hour drive to the north.

How The Rangers Can Get Heatley
by Paul on 06/30/09 at 02:55 PM ET

from Michael Obernauer of The Blueshirts Blog at the NY Daily News,
What’s it going to take for the Rangers to get a deal done for the two-time 50-goal scorer? For one thing, they need to move some money the other way, but they can still afford to come out a little behind because acquiring Heatley would go a long way toward addressing one of their most dire needs. If Michal Rozsival ($5 million cap hit) is included in an offer with either Brandon Dubinsky or Ryan Callahan plus a draft pick, the Sens can bellyache all they want about not wanting Rozsival, but we’ll see then how desperate they are to be rid of Heatley ($7.5 million cap hit). If the Sens prefer to substitute Scott Gomez (7.35 cap hit) for Rozsival in that offer, with five more years on his deal to Rozsival’s three? That might get it done too.

from Wayne Scanlan of the Ottawa Citizen,
Tom Molloy, an international hockey coach and former neighbour of the Heatleys, says the one-sided Heatley bashing from fans and media has been difficult for the family.
Dany’s parents (Murray and Karin) dropped over to our place the other day,” Molloy said by telephone from Calgary. “They said, ‘Everyone is crucifying Dany.’ His mother is very upset. And the attacks are all personal stuff, about his character. Nobody mentions that this is a guy who gives up a month of his summer every year to play for Team Canada.”
Molloy wrote a letter to The Citizen sports department because the Heatleys told him they didn’t have “a forum” to express the other side of the story….
Molloy’s letter to the newspaper began this way:
“I can’t express how disappointed I am in the press and hockey fans concerning Dany Heatley’s request to be traded. I was talking with his parents ... and they can’t believe the awful things that people are saying about Dany. He simply wants to play on a team that believes in his abilities.
“The new coach (Cory Clouston) has decided that Dany is a second- or third-line player, uses him on the second power play and plays him 14 minutes a game.

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,
Saturday morning is approaching and Dany Heatley remains a member of the Ottawa Senators.
“A couple of teams I’ve talked to, we’re just beating around the bushes right now,” Sens GM Bryan Murray told a group of media Friday night. “So we’ll just certainly get through tonight without anything happening, I would assume.”
I asked Murray if he was frustrated with the quality of offers, or lack thereof.
“I just watched one of the other trades take place [the Pronger deal] and, yes, I think there’s a better offer needed, certainly,” said Murray. “I’ve made a couple of requests and I think I’ve been quite fair really. I know I can’t get a match for Dany Heatley, I know that for a fact, but I want to get some fair value.”

from Kevin Allen’s Twitter thsi morning,
Heard this morning that unless offers significanly improve the Senators may keep Dany Heatley. His $7.5 million cap too much for most teams.
added 8:17am, via Larry Brooks of the NY Post,
A well-placed source reports Ottawa GM Bryan Murray, under pressure to move Heatley before a $4 million up-front payment on his $8M salary for 2009-10 comes due on Wednesday, acknowledged yesterday he hasn’t received an offer of close to equal value for Heatley, who has five years and $35M remaining on a contract that comes with a $7.5M annual cap hit.
Though GM Glen Sather has backed himself into a corner with the cap that will remain within a couple of hundred thousand dollars of last year’s $56.7M following the NHLPA’s vote to trigger a five-percent bump to counteract a decline in revenue, the Blueshirts could absorb Heatley’s contract by moving Michal Rozsival ($5M cap hit) and not qualifying Nik Zherdev ($3.25M). Qualifying offers are due by 5 p.m. Monday.

Talking Heatley
by Paul on 06/23/09 at 07:34 AM ET

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,
Dany Heatley has told the Senators where he wants to go. But if the Senators can’t trade him before a $4-million (all terms US) bonus kicks in on July 1, they may tell him where to go.
Senators GM Bryan Murray expects talks will heat up this week at the NHL draft in Montreal as several league sources confirmed Heatley’s agents have given the club a wishlist of up to 10 teams. But there could be some flexibility — he may agree to go somwehere not listed.
Sources told Sun Media the Los Angeles Kings, New York Rangers, San Jose Sharks, Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Blackhawks, Vancouver Canucks and Boston Bruins were among the teams submitted to Murray by Heatley’s agents J.P. Barry and Stacey McAlpine.
While the Wings and Bruins would likely have a difficult time making a move under the $56.7-million salary cap, it’s believed discussions have been held with the Kings, Rangers, Sharks and Canucks. Sources say Minnesota, Colorado, Edmonton and St. Louis are taking a serious look, too.

How About Heatley To The Wild?
by Paul on 06/20/09 at 09:59 PM ET

from Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune,
(Bryan) Murray, who is extremely close with Fletcher after mentoring him with Florida and Anaheim, said Heatley has given him a list of teams. But if he works out a better deal with another team, Heatley will be pressured to make it work or he will remain in Ottawa.
Asked if he could add an expensive player such as Heatley or Vincent Lecavalier, Fletcher said: “I won’t talk specific names, but I think we could. But we’d have a lot of $500,000 players in key spots unless you could move another salary and create room that way. So there’s ways to do anything. But the higher the number gets, the less flexibility you have to fill other holes.”
And Fletcher said he believes the Wild must add a center, winger and as many as three defensemen via trade or free agency.
You can bet if Fletcher had the choice between re-signing Gaborik and trading for Heatley, he would choose Gaborik simply because it means not giving up assets.

Rich Hammond of Inside the Kings was at a breakfast today which I believe fans attended and some asked the Kings management team questons…
Next question was from a young man asking about Dany Heatley. (Ron) Hextall addressed it and spoke in general terms about Heatley, not particularly about whether the Kings wanted him.
Hextall pointed about that Heatley asked to be traded from Atlanta (under circumstances that Hextall acknowledged were not ideal) then signed a big contract in Ottawa and asked to be traded shortly thereafter, with a list of teams that he would accept a deal to. Hextall said that such behavior ``raises red flags.’‘

Burke Not Interested In Heatley

from TSN,
Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke let it be known that the Leafs will not be in on the Dany Heatley sweepstakes, and he pulled no punches along the way.
In a phone interview with Deb Placey and Billy Jaffe on NHL Live! broadcast on the NHL network, Burke stated that the Leafs had no interest in the two-time 50 goal scorer, largely because of the way he has chosen to handle his trade request.
“We’re not going to be in on that,” Burke stated. “He’s a good player but I have certain guidelines on how players ask for trades.”
I was listening to the interview and one thing not mentioned in the above story is Burke was asked about the Phoenix/Hamilton issue. Burke said he cannot discuss right now, the league is handling the issue, but once he gets the OK to talk about it, NHL Live should book him for an hour, because he has a lot to say on that topic.

Murray Wants Equal Value For Heatley

from TSN,
(Bryan) Murray stated that he would like to get a deal done before next week’s draft in Montreal but despite the “off-year,” Murray realizes it will be difficult to get equal value for a sniper of Heatley’s caliber.
“I’m just not going to let him just walk away for nothing as you know. Whether we get the ideal trade or not that is one thing but I have to get something good for this organization coming back.”
The agent for Heatley has also submitted a list of teams that the two-time 50 goal scorer was willing to go to, however Murray stated that list will not necessarily be stuck with if he is unable to find the right deal.
“If he doesn’t want to be in Ottawa and there is team that offers me a deal that I think is a better deal obviously I have to put some pressure on them to accept that or he may end up playing back here.”

No To Heatley In Edmonton

from Robert Tychkowski of the Edmonton Sun,
Which brings us to Dany Heatley. He shoots Edmonton a sideways glance and fans are reaching for their wallets -or, Katz’s wallet - faster than a drunken sailor on the first day of shore leave.
Let’s hope Oilers management shows a little more restraint.
Edmonton, of all places, should be wary of mercenaries like Heatley. Have we learned nothing from Mike Comrie and Chris Pronger?
With a salary cap that’s dropping fast, do the Oilers really want to invest a big chunk of their allowance for the next five years on a guy who only seems to care about one thing: Himself?
We’re not talking about Henrik Zetterberg here. We’re talking about one of the lead dogs on one of the biggest, softest underachievers of the last 20 years. The Ottawa Senators were supposed to be Stanley Cup champions two times over by now, but they gagged and folded and got outworked year after year until their window of opportunity had finally closed for good.

Bonus Hangs Over Heatley’s Head
by Paul on 06/12/09 at 09:57 AM ET

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,
Two league executives confirmed to Sun Media yesterday that if the high-scoring winger isn’t dealt by July 1, Senators owner Eugene Melnyk will be on the hook to pay Heatley a whopping $4-million bonus (all terms US), even if he doesn’t play for Ottawa next season.
Coupled with the $10 million Heatley received as part of the terms of the six-year, $45-million contract extension he signed in October 2007, Melnyk will have shelled out a total of $14 million over the past year to Heatley, who had only 39 goals and 33 assists for 72 points last season.
Not only is the bonus costly for the Senators, both executives indicated it could “seriously hamper” GM Bryan Murray’s ability to move Heatley before the NHL draft June 26-27 at the Bell Centre in Montreal.

Bad Timing Dany

from Damien Cox of The Spin,
Talk to Dany Heatley once and you understand you’re not talking to a MENSA candidate.
That’s okay. As probably more a few coaches have told Heatley along the way: don’t think, it just hurts the team.
But where Heatley really kept his synapses in reserve this time was his timing concerning a request to have his hockey contract traded to another NHL club.
I get the part where he doesn’t want to live in Ottawa. Neither would I. I get the part where after being allowed to freelance continuously during his years as a heroic Senator he might chafe at the notion of being asked to play a larger team game.
Geez, if he’d known he’d have to play in three zones he’d have asked for more money.
No, the part where I don’t get Heatley’s timing is when it comes to the fact that just about every Canadian hockey player is trying to be on their best behaviour these days in hopes that Steve Yzerman might find them worthy of being part of the Olympic effort next winter.

from Don Brennan of Off The Posts at the Ottawa Sun,
Don’t shed too many tears over what is now the inevitable departure of Dany Heatley.
The Senators will be better off without him.
Sure, his goals will be missed. But the millions the team saves on his salary will buy back some goals, and maybe even some character.
That last quality, Heatley lacks….
Some team will give up some talent and devote a large chunk of its cap budget to you.
If not, I fully expect you to hold out of camp next September, until a deal is worked out. You remind me a lot of Alexei Yashin, Dany.
added 2:04pm, from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
Speculating about the possible destination of Dany Heatley, in the aftermath of his trade demand from the Ottawa Senators, will eat up much time between now and the NHL’s entry draft in 16 days’ time. Two factors will make it difficult for Senators’ GM Bryan Murray to make a good trade for the disgruntled forward:

The Ottawa Senators should get some much needed help up front on Thursday, as winger Dany Heatley is expected to return to the lineup against the Florida Panthers after spending four weeks on the injured list with a separated shoulder.
“I feel pretty good,” Heatley said after skating Wednesday. “We’ll see how it is when I wake up tomorrow. It’s been feeling really good all along, so we’ll see tomorrow.”
Coach John Paddock was optimistic that Heatley would be ready for Thursday.
“I’d say he’s probable,” Paddock said. “I don’t think he’s going to be at 100 percent until tomorrow, but he’s feeling comfortable, so probable to likely is the impression he gave me.”

from TSN,
Sources tell TSN Ottawa Senators forward Dany Heatley suffered a separated shoulder in Saturday’s 3-2 victory over Detroit and will be out of action for 4-6 weeks.
Heatley missed most of the third period when he crashed hard into the end boards with Red Wings winger Dallas Drake. Heatley was slouched over when he left the ice and was favouring his shoulder. He didn’t return to the game.
added 12:37pm, from the Ottawa Citizen,
The Ottawa Senators will be without the services of Dany Heatley for six weeks after the all-star sniper dislocated his shoulder Saturday night against the Detroit Red Wings.
Speaking with reporters following an optional team skate Sunday morning, Heatley said he was disappointed to miss the time but glad to have plenty of healing and rest time before the playoffs begin.
“It’s frustrating, kind of an unlucky play, but that’s hockey, so (you) just rehab as best you can and try to get back as fast as you can,” he said.

Kovalchuk Driven To Succeed
by Paul on 11/10/07 at 12:13 PM ET

from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution,
Kovalchuk credits his father for handing down an intense, competitive drive, a drive Thrashers opponents have seen up close over the past two weeks.
It’s a competitive hunger that former teammate Dany Heatley got to know well in Atlanta, and saw again recently in Ottawa.
“It all goes back to hockey,” said Heatley, who still keeps in close touch with Kovalchuk. “How hungry he is to score. ... You can see that in games, his competitiveness. What I find is he’s like that in practice, scrimmages, a two-on-one drill — he wants to score. He’s hungry to score. He wants to win.”

from Darren Dreger at TSN,
Dany Heatley has agreed to a 6-year contract extension with the Ottawa Senators. Sources tell TSN that the salary averages $7.5 million per year.
Although details of the structure remain confidential, sources say it’s similar to the contract Daniel Briere signed in Philadelphia in terms of a heavily weighted salary at the front of the contract that ratchets downward, making the cap hit the team will absorb more attractive.

From Darren Dreger at TSN,
Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk along with general manager Bryan Murray spent the better part of five hours on Thursday in discussion with Dany Heatley’s representatives, J.P. Barry and Stacey McAlpline in Ottawa.
The two groups decided it would be best to walk away from the negotiating table, challenged with the task of re-establishing their positions.
“We had lengthy and detailed discussions regarding Dany’s free agency and we will take some time over the next week to consider each other’s position,” Barry said.
