Welcome Dave Tippett

GLENDALE, ARIZONA --- Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have hired Dave Tippett as the 17th head coach in franchise history.

“It is a great pleasure to welcome Dave Tippett as the new head coach of the Phoenix Coyotes,” said Maloney.  “I have always been impressed with the playing style of the teams Dave has coached.  He coaches his teams to play the game with intelligence, discipline, structure, a sense of urgency and a team-first approach.  We feel we have assembled a first-class coaching staff that is comparable to any in the NHL and are looking forward to Dave leading us to success for many years to come.”

Bad Move Dallas

from Scott Burnside of ESPN,

Maybe his former boss in Toronto, GM Brian Burke, and longtime Burke associate Dave Nonis, now the assistant GM in Toronto, whispered in Nieuwendyk’s ear about the virtues of their old Vancouver pal and former coach Marc Crawford.

Who knows.

But the one thing that is patently clear is this is a mistake that is going to rest solely on Nieuwendyk’s shoulders. And this is certainly a mistake.

The old adage about judging a hockey trade by which team obtains the best player applies here. With Crawford becoming the new coach in Dallas, it is a step down on almost every level from what Tippett brought to the table.

One NHL coach told ESPN.com on Wednesday he thinks Tippett is one of the best coaches in the league, bar none.

added 3:43pm, from Damien Cox of The Spin,

Tabbing Marc Crawford to be the club’s new head coach just one day after officially firing Dave Tippett - hmmm, any possibility Crawford was talking to the Stars while Tippett still had the job? - doesn’t exactly put a progressive new face on the Dallas franchise.

While young still at 48, Crawford has that odour of “yesterday’s man” about him.

Tippett Fired In Dallas

via TSN,

The Dallas Stars have fired head coach Dave Tippett.

added 5:12pm, from TSN with the same link,

While no successor has been named, sources say the Stars have asked for permission to talk to former Los Angeles Kings, Colorado Avalanche and Vancouver Canucks coach Marc Crawford. All signs point towards Crawford taking over for Tippet, however that remains unconfirmed at this point.

added 5:35pm, Dallas fans start to respond to firing and possible hire.

added 9:06pm,via Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News,

I’ve talked to new Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk and he has issued an official ``no comment.’’

He said he is not ready to talk about anything at this time.

Because I have to confirm these things through direct sources, and because Dave Tippett is not returning phone calls, that’s all I can say at this time. I do not have official confirmation yet.

Dallas Promises a New Deal for Tippett

From Tracey Myers at the Star-Telegram,

There are a few little details to work out, but Dallas Stars coach Dave Tippett will have a new three-year deal, co-general manager Les Jackson said today. An official announcement will be made Tuesday or Wednesday.

Tippett’s deal will take him through the 2010-11 season, as will the co-general managers’ deal that Jackson and Brett Hull each signed on Thursday.

“Dave is very deserving of a good contract. He’s done a good job for us,” Jackson said. “He represents our team and our philosophy well.”

Game Day with Dave Tippett

Some questions for Dallas Stars coach Dave Tippett this morning.

Q. Where did you get the idea or what did you see in Toby Petersen that made you think this would be a good matchup for him?

COACH DAVE TIPPETT: Probably the speed element. I mean, there’s a couple things. He’s got very good hockey sense and the speed element was something we felt we were lacking. He’s a player that plays fast. He makes solid plays. He’s not spectacular from any stretch of the imagination, but is a very conscious player on both sides of the puck.

We were down 3-0. We had to find something to give us a little spark, and he’s been one of those guys.

Questions for the Dallas Stars

Today’s Q&A session with the Dallas Stars features some thoughts from Steve Ott and coach Dave Tippett.

Q. Steve, one step down. Now you got to go back to Detroit where things haven’t been great. How are you going to focus for that?

STEVE OTT: Obviously, things haven’t been great in Detroit. Starting with your goalie, when he hasn’t really won in that building, it kind of sets up for a great night, I think.  What better time than now to, you know, put a little bit of pressure on them, Marty have a big night, get out there with a win.

Babcock & Tippett After Game 4 WCF

Q.  Mike, do you have any thoughts on the disallowed goal?

MIKE BABCOCK:  What do you want me to say?  The guy’s not in the paint?  The guy’s out of the paint.  That’s a repetition call totally.  It’s disappointing.  I mean, Homer got a penalty the other night and he bumped Turco earlier in the game.  But I guess the way I look at it is this:  in the League there’s lots that goes on on the ice.  Sometimes a guy gets tripped and you miss it.  Some things go wrong and you miss it.  Just don’t make stuff up, that’s all.

These men are doing their very best, just like us.  They want to get to the Stanley Cup Finals.  Kelly is a good referee.  He just blew the call.  That’s life.

Q&A with Dave Tippett and Brenden Morrow

Today’s media time with the Dallas Stars’ Brenden Morrow and coach Dave Tippett.

Q.  What is the update on Brenden?
COACH DAVE TIPPETT:  Brenden is fine, ready to go.

Q.  Do you think you’ll be looking at different changes for lines?
COACH DAVE TIPPETT:  We’ll tinker around a little bit.  We’re certainly looking for answers, looking for ways to win games.  So that’s where we’re at.  We’ll continue to find the answers and see if we can get the win we need.

Interview with Dave Tippett

An interview today with Dallas Stars coach Dave Tippett.

Q.  Talk about tonight, going into play and how do you guide your team not to play too desperate because your backs are against the wall?

COACH DAVE TIPPETT:  We have to come in, and our focus now is to come play the best game of the series.  We thought our team struggled with energy the first game.  The second game we thought we did stuff that’s more indicative of how we did in the playoffs so far.

Stars Game Plan

From Eric Duhatschek at the Globe & Mail,

“The bottom line is, we need to skate and handle the puck more. Our best defence against them is when we have the puck. Last game, we didn’t do enough of that.”

Stars’ coach Dave Tippett hinted there could be line-up changes. Stu Barnes, out since the middle of the last round with concussion-like symptoms, could be closer to playing. Also, the Stars could make a switch on the blue line, and replace Fistric with fellow rookie Matt Niskanen.

Of greater concern to Tippett was the Stars’ work in the face-off circle, where the Red Wings dominated the opener. All teams want to start with the puck, but it’s even more critical against a puck-possession team such as Detroit. Once they have, they rarely give it back.

Coach Tippett Answers Questions

Transcript from a press conference with Dallas Stars coach Dave Tippett:

Q. What’s your off-day skate looking like? A lot of coaching going on there?

COACH DAVE TIPPETT: That’s what happens when we didn’t get a lot of time between the last series and this one. We felt we had a few things we wanted to address out there. Not a strenuous day, but certainly some things we want to look at that we have to be better at.

Team Matters To Tippett

from Tracey Myers of the Star-Telegram,

It’s really no surprise that Tippett’s last concern is himself. In his coaching career, it’s never been about the individual. He’s adamant about the team concept, and is reluctant to call out particular players unless the moment calls for it.

“He’s not the [Calgary Flames coach] Mike Keenan who likes to bury anybody or crush you or tear you down,” center Steve Ott said. “He’s always come up to me or other players to find out what’s wrong or [ask] ‘how you doing?’”

The regular season has been a boon for Tippett, whose 235-127-48 record is a plus. So are the two Pacific Division titles. The playoffs have been tougher, and the Stars have fallen for various reasons.

The picture was looking different more than a month ago. A very successful February, coupled with the trade for Brad Richards, had some people picking the Stars to win the Stanley Cup.
