Grigorenko Says Good-Bye To Grand Rapids

from Red Wings Corner,

Igor Grigorenko didn’t want to be in Grand Rapids any more.

So Grigorenko, who has an out clause in his contract that allows him to return to Russia if he’s in the minors for more than three weeks, refused to remain in Grand Rapids any longer and has thus been recalled by the Red Wings. He’s in Detroit now, on the team’s active roster and will practice with the club Tuesday.

Red Wings management asked Grigorenko to remain in Grand Rapids beyond the three weeks, but he refused and would have returned to Russia instead.

In his three-week, five-game stay in Grand Rapids, Grigorenko tallied zero points and two penalty minutes.

When asked where Grigorenko fits in the lineup plans, coach Mike Babcock answered: “That’s a good question. Everything here’s on an at-earn basis. We’ll see if he has enough pace to fit in.”

Dallas Drake Out With Fractured Cheekbone

via Red Wings Corner,

Dallas Drake has a fractured cheekbone—caused by the Kyle McLaren hit early in Thursday’s game in San Jose—and has flown home to Detroit. Drake will be examined by doctors Monday to determine his status. He won’t be with the team for Saturday’s game in Phoenix.

Line Of The Day

How true Mike…

from John McGourty at NHL.com,

“Under the salary cap, you don’t have extra guys anymore,” Babcock said. “The ‘depth’ of the organization is health. Scotty Bowman always had an extra line sitting in the press box. Those days are gone. As soon as you’re not healthy, you’re depth is gone. That’s why minor-league development of prospects is more important than ever. When they get brought up, they have to be ready to play your system.”

Chelios Responds

from the Detroit Free Press,

Never one to soften his words, Red Wings defenseman Chris Chelios delivered a simple message to NHL commissioner Gary Bettman on Monday.

“I can’t believe my good friend Gary would want to leave me in Russia,” Chelios said, and it must be noted the “good friend” was deeply sarcastic. “I’d like to have a private talk with Gary one of these days, see what he means.”

Chelios was referring to the latest turn of events in the soap opera that debuted in the aftermath of the 2004-05 NHL lockout, starring Bettman, deputy commissioner Bill Daly and former NHL Players’ Association boss Ted Saskin.

Dominator on Wheels

With thanks to Roman at eNHL.cz, we’ve discovered Dominik Hasek’s new off season hobby.

(*Important to note that when Hasek spoke to eNHL.cz’s camera man, he was insistent that he does not ride during the NHL season.)

Wings Players Would Enjoy Playing Europe

From Dave Waddell at Can West,

Many of the Detroit Red Wings wouldn’t mind a little European holiday to start the season, but not all are convinced the NHL is a viable long-term product on the continent.

Certainly, with their heavy Euro content, the Wings would be a very popular draw to open the 2008-09 regular season in Europe, as Los Angeles and Anaheim did this season.

“I think it would be exciting for any team to go and play overseas, whether it’s London, Prague or Stockholm or wherever,” Wings captain Nick Lidstrom said.

Line Of The Day

from the Montreal Gazette,

“I played with Stevie Yzerman my rookie season and I scored five goals in my first 12 games,” Dandenault said. “I was a scratch a lot of the time that year, but when I started the season I was with him. It was amazing. But I ended up the season with five goals because I went to the fourth line. I started the season with Yzerman and finished with Stu Grimson.”

Nick The Machine

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,

The great ones make a hard game look ridiculously easy.

Gretzky. Orr. Mario. Howe. Beliveau. Lafleur.

You can add Nick Lidstrom to that pantheon.

Since Orr retired 31 years ago because his knees gave out, Lidstrom and Ray Bourque have been hockey’s pre-eminent defencemen. Paul Coffey, who had 1500 points, was close. So was Denis Potvin, a mean customer. Chris Chelios, Larry Robinson and Scott Niedermayer have a following as game-managers. But, Lidstrom, who’s remarkably only missed 22 of 1,201 total games (some forced to rest him for the playoffs) is, in his 16th NHL season, a machine.

Franzen Out With Sprained MCL

from Mlive,

Wings Believe They’re Heading East in 4 Years

From Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun via the Winnipeg Sun,

Almost 10 years after the Maple Leafs moved back to the Eastern Conference to rejoin the Original Sixers in Montreal, the Detroit Red Wings remained trapped in a Western time-zone warp.

But that is bound to change, says Wings vice-president Jim Devellano.

“There’s little doubt that Las Vegas is coming in (during expansion), it’s about four years from now,” Devellano told the Detroit News. “And I truly believe Gary Bettman will move us East at that changing.”

How Much Longer For Lidstrom

from Evan Grossman of NHL.com,

Lidstrom won his fifth Norris Trophy last season as the NHL’s best defenseman, and he’s in the final season of his contract with the Red Wings. But if General Manager Ken Holland has his way, Lidstrom will be back for another decade in Hockeytown, perhaps long enough to equal Bobby Orr’s record of eight Norris Trophies.

“I hope about another 10 years,” Holland said when asked how long he hopes Lidstrom will play. “I think Nick, he’s 37, 38 years of age. Certainly the superstars, it appears to me, can play into their early 40s. Steve Yzerman was a real good player for us in his late 30s; unfortunately, injury caught up to him. Chris Chelios at the age of 45 is still going strong….”

Sharks are the Best, IF…

From Mark Purdy at the Mercury News,

This should be the best Sharks season ever. Starting tonight.

If they keep remembering Detroit.

The Sharks have the size to intimidate other teams. They have a top goaltender to frustrate opposing scorers. Their young players should only keep getting better as the relentless 82-game schedule progresses.

If they keep remembering Detroit.

The Young Wings

from the Windsor Star (Wed. edition),

The adjectives younger and quicker have been missing from the vocabularies of the Detroit Red Wings for more than a decade.
However, with 11 of 23 players on the roster for tonight’s season opener against the Anaheim Ducks being under 30, those adjectives were once again being dusted off Tuesday.
“The growth of our team isn’t about bringing new people here,” Wings coach Mike Babcock said. “It’s about the people within growing into their jobs.”

Toronto Media - You Missed Scotty

from the Detroit Free Press,

Will the rumors ever stop about you leaving the Wings to run the Maple Leafs?

(Bowman) They’ve been finished. I went to Toronto (last Friday), and nobody bothered me. I’ve been with the Wings for 14 years. I basically was not interested in leaving. I like the people I work with. No reason I’d want to change.

Wings Have All The Answers

Abel to Yzerman pointed out the Q & A interview the Wings braintrust did with the Detroit News.  Here is another expert…

Ilitch: Oh, I do. I’ll speak up. I think we’ve got a good team, we got a good shot at the Cup. Last year we should’ve won the Cup. We were 2-2—and I’m gonna talk like a typical fan now—it was 2-2, and a minute and a half to go, and they called the cheapest penalty I’ve ever seen.

Devellano: Yeah, (expletive).

Bowman: Two-man system.

Ilitch: Now, and here’s the big tears coming out, but prior to that, Kenny brought it to the league’s attention, there was a flagrant penalty on Anaheim, right in front of the referee, and they didn’t call it. Then they turned around and called that (interference) penalty (on Datsyuk). We had that game won, and we’d have been up 3-2 in the series.

That same referee in 1994, when we were down 3-2 going into Toronto, we score four power-play goals, we come back to Detroit 3-3, and the referee did not call one penalty—not one—during the game or overtime. So you figure that one out. We lost, and that’s the same guy that made that call in this arena with a minute and a half to go.

Filppula Gets A Shot At Center

from the Windsor Star,

Can the Finn finish?

“I don’t think too much (about the increased expectations),” said Filppula, who had 10 goals and seven assists in limited playing time last season. “I think the biggest expectations are coming from myself.

“For me, what I’m expecting, is to continue what was going on at the end of last season. Getting more ice time and getting better and better. I think I improved my game as the season went on.  “I haven’t really thought about the number of points I should be producing.”

A year ago, Filppula wasn’t even on the Red Wings’ opening night roster.

Line Of The Day

from Red Wings Corner- Babcock on Igor Grigorenko

Grigs not being able to speak English ... “That’s one of the biggest problems. When you’re trying to communicate to him that you’re trying to help him, he just thinks he’s getting demoted. It’s to our benefit when you’ve got a player who could be a real good NHL player, you’ve got to find him. … Now try to explain that to him. You’ve got his agent translating, but any time they’re translating, they’re translating, not you. I’m always a little leery of that.”
“He’s going to play hockey in Grand Rapids. Everyone knows what skate is. Everyone knows what work is. Everyone knows how to ride the bike. It doesn’t matter what language.”

What’s The Problem In Detroit

from the AP via Sports Illustrated,

Hockeytown needs to get its groove back.

The organization has aggressively tried to market its once-popular product, dropping some ticket prices as low as $9 and plastering images and messages on billboards.

A week before the opener against the Stanley Cup champion Anaheim Ducks at Joe Louis Arena, a block of 15 seats was available - at $44 apiece - in a corner of the upper bowl.

“The No. 1 thing that has hurt us from a fan’s standpoint is the Michigan economy,’’ general manager Ken Holland said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Rafalski Enjoying Offensive Freedom

from the Windsor Star,

Though he hasn’t been the point producer Schneider has been in his career, Rafalski has been a steady 50-point man on a New Jersey team that wasn’t noted as an offensive juggernaut.

“It’s a big difference,” Rafalski said. “You have more freedom to jump up, join the plays. I like it.

“It’s like going back to how I played in Europe. It’s going to take me a while to get back in that mode.”

Pick It Up Red Wings

Detroit Red Wings- Time to get your website up-to-date.

Searching for information on last night’s Wings/Bolts game, I was kind of shocked to see the lead story at the Wings website was, “Chelios bags overtime winner vs Pens”.  An AP story from 4 days ago.

Thanks to the Tampa Bay site, I was able to get a complete rundown of the game last night.

The Fab Five of the 2007-08 Season

From Pierre LeBrun at the CP via Yahoo!

The Ducks may be in flux but they are still mighty. The Sharks smell blood, the Red Wings will soar, the Senators sense destiny and the Rangers plan to rock Broadway again.

Those are the Fab Five as the NHL’s 90th season opens this weekend in London, England, with Anaheim opening defence of its title against rival Los Angeles.

The Ducks romped so impressively to California’s first Stanley Cup last June that giving the NHL its first repeat champion in a decade seemed like a sensible proposition.  That’s before superstar defenceman Scott Niedermayer and 48-goal scorer Teemu Selanne started talking about retirement.

Detroit Red Wings 2007-2008 Season Preview

by George James Malik

It’s that time of year again—time to prognosticate and make grandiose claims about a team’s potential successes or failures based upon a few exhibition games, last season’s performance, and a “gut feeling” or five.  Woo, yeah, party!

Seriously, Dave over at Gorillacrouch.com has kindly invited various bloggers from the Central Division to do team previews of the clubs they cover, and Bill (Mr. Abel to Yzerman), Christy Hammond (Behind the Jersey), John and Steve (Gloveside.net), Matt Saler, (On the Wings), and Dave himself have chosen this particular Monday to bombard you with all the Wings preview-y goodness that you can take.

A Shot Back

Empty Netters takes a shot at Chelios…

The Penguins lost 1-0 in overtime in Detroit last night. Granted, a number of talented players such as Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Henrik Zetterberg didn’t play in this game, but when a 92-year-old man like Chris Chelios is the only player to score a goal, things are wrong, preseason or not.

My question is… Shouldn’t you be pointing the finger to the Penguins for allowing Chelios to score?

Lasting Impressions

by George James Malik

It’s that time of year again, that time again for each and every one of us, regardless of the teams we root for. Training camp has ended, and the exhibition season has begun, and whether you’ve seen scrimmages and exhibition games in person, online, or whether all the information you can find is the “official” line from the mainstream media, you think you’ve got a pretty good idea as to which of your team’s prospects, try-outs, and new free agents are going to pan out—especially if you’ve seen them in action.

You Learn Something Every Day

via the Juneau Empire,

Kim Muir of “Can’t Skate, Can’t Play” will be holding a three-day power skating clinic for hockey players on Sept. 19-21 at Treadwell Arena for the Juneau Douglas Ice Association. Muir is the skating instructor for the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings.

Heck, I didn’t even know the Wings had a skating instructor.  More on Kim can be found here.

It’s Not Manna From Heaven, But It’s A Start

by George James Malik

The Red Wings’ decision to offer “filler seats” on a discounted basis is nothing but great news for a fan base that’s dealing with a less than spectacular Michigan economy, and, combined with the fact that the Red Wings aren’t actually charging full price for their exhibition game tickets, it’s downright progressive.

But before you go dancing in the streets, Wings fans, let’s put this in perspective.  The seats are at $9—presumably for the last-row upper-bowl seats that cost $22, because it’s $50 from the halfway point of the upper bowl down—$22, $44, and $54.  There is a “maximum of two per person” caveat, and there’s no indication as to whether this condition is applied on a game-by-game basis, or whether that’s all you can buy for the entire month.  These seats are going to be released to the public after the halfway point of the calendar month preceeding the games to which they apply, and there is no indication whether there’s a “facilities fee” added on for our convenience.
