SAN JOSE – San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has acquired defenseman Brent Burns and a second round selection in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for Devin Setoguchi, Charlie Coyle and a first round selection (28th overall) in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.
Burns, 26, was named to the Western Conference All-Star team in 2010-11, appearing in 80 games and posting 46 points (17-29=46), which tied for 14th most amongst all NHL defensemen. Also amongst League defensemen, his 17 goals ranked third and his 8 power play goals were tied for third. He set career highs in points, goals, assists, penalty minutes (98) and shots (170) in 2010-11. Playing in every situation, he averaged 2:42 seconds of penalty kill time per game to go along with his 3:03 seconds of power play time per game.
The seven-year NHL veteran, all of which have come with Minnesota, has posted 183 career points (55-128=183) in 453 games played. He has appeared in 11 Stanley Cup Playoff games, posting three points (0-3=3).
“Brent is an elite first-pairing defenseman that is just coming into his prime,” stated Wilson. “We feel that he gives our blueline tremendous depth and versatility and will augment our existing core. He combines a dangerous offensive prowess with an abrasive presence in the defensive zone.”

SAN JOSE – San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has re-signed Group II restricted free agent forward Devin Setoguchi to a three-year contract extension. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The 24-year-old Setoguchi tied for the team-lead in goals (7) in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, including scoring overtime game-winners in Game Three of the Western Conference Quarterfinals against the Los Angeles Kings (6-5) and Game Three of the Western Conference Semifinals against the Detroit Red Wings (4-3). He finished tied-for-sixth on the team with 10 points (7-3=10) in 18 playoff games.
Despite a slow start to the 2010-11 regular season which saw him just two goals in the team’s first 31 games (he missed nine of those due to injury), Setoguchi still potted 22 goals, along with 19 assists for 41 points in 72 games. He posted his first career hat trick on Feb. 19 vs. Colorado. Setoguchi set a career high in game-winning goals (5, T-2nd on the team) and was third on the team with 138 hits.
“We feel Devin is an important part of our team and we look forward to him continuing to elevate his game to the level he is capable of,” said Wilson.

Sharks Get A Double Dose Of Injuries
by Paul on 11/17/09 at 02:30 PM ET

from David Pollak of Working the Corners,
Actual news today: Both Brad Staubitz and Devin Setoguchi will be out of the lineup tonight.
For Staubitz, it’s because of an injury during a very lightly attended practice yesterday as a puck struck him hard on the right side of the face below the eye. It happened as he was trying to screen goalie Thomas Greiss when defenseman Jason Demers took a shot….
For Setoguchi, the problem is a recurrence of the same leg injury that caused him to miss seven games from Oct. 25 to Nov. 7.
Todd McLellan said Setoguchi would be day-to-day and it was too soon to know the extent of Staubitz’s injury; he remained here with the team and will be examined back in San Jose tomorrow.

Setoguchi Part Of The Sharks Success

from the CP,
The San Jose Sharks have been tearing their way through the NHL so far this season.
And while the success has been partly due to strong performances from usual suspects like Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau and Evgeni Nabokov, it’s hard to ignore the contributions of Devin Setoguchi.
He bounced between San Jose and the team’s AHL affiliate in Worcester last season, but has found some serious stability early in his second year as a pro. Setoguchi is currently playing on the Sharks top line with Thornton and Marleau.
“I got a chance of a lifetime to play with two of the best players in the NHL,” he said Wednesday. “I’m just trying to make the best of it right now.”

2 Goal NHL Debut

From David Pollak at the Mercury News,
The guy hasn’t been around the locker room long enough for the Sharks to agree on his nickname - Coach Ron Wilson calls him Seto, Joe Thornton refers to him as Gooch.
Either way, rookie Devin Setoguchi was the difference-maker Monday night, scoring two third-period goals in his first NHL game to lead the Sharks to a 4-2 comeback victory over the Dallas Stars.
My vote is definitely ‘Seto’. Anyway, just for the heck of it, here’s the video from ESPN showing his career highlights thus far. Nice way to start.
