Why Not Don
by Paul on 06/22/08 at 08:54 AMComments (3)
from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,
But what Cherry should be wondering—and what we should be wondering—is why he has not yet been recognized by the Hall. Like him or hate him, there is no disputing the impact Cherry has had on hockey.
In a country that is all about hockey, he owns the loudest voice and the most recognized face.

Cherry Not Happy With Over the Glass Rule
by Paul on 05/18/08 at 05:20 PMComments (18)
from the CP via the Ottawa Sun,
Speaking shortly after Rick Nash’s delay of game penalty led to Ilya Kovalchuk’s overtime winner in Canada’s 5-4 loss to Russia in the gold-medal game Sunday, Cherry ranted that the rule was ruining games....
“The National Hockey League, the reason they put this in, this goofy stupid rule, is because they said players were tired and they were shooting it in the stands,” an emotional Cherry said during his Coach’s Corner segment on the CBC. “If the guy knows he’s getting a penalty, would he shoot it in the stands? Some fool in the National Hockey League had nothing to do (but) come up with that stupid rule and it’s cost series.”

via the Detroit Free Press,
“Redneck to me, the word came about when the Scottish and Irish come over here and worked, and they were bent over in the fields all the time and their necks got red and the Indians called them rednecks,” Cherry said Saturday (and later on “Hockey Night in Canada"). “To be a redneck is to be proud.
“This is a redneck city, a blue-collar city, and Probert and Kocur and McCarty were the gods when they were here,” Cherry said. “I’m not knocking the team ... people would rather see a good, tough team.”

The Media Judge
by Paul on 04/29/08 at 11:14 AMComments (3)
from William Houston of the Globe and Mail,
There are several ways of looking at Hockey Night In Canada commentator Don Cherry’s putdown of Jermain Franklin, a TSN reporter who asked a question of San Jose Sharks coach Ron Wilson and was ridiculed on Cherry’s Coach’s Corner for doing so.
You could point out that Cherry is not a journalist, therefore, isn’t qualified to judge Franklin, although Cherry is certainly entitled to his opinion.
Or, given the number of weak questions asked on Hockey Night In Canada, Cherry’s sudden interest in the media should start at home. He could even compile a DVD—Hockey Night’s Greatest Hits: Stupidest Questions Vol. 1.

The Don Cherry Story
by Paul on 03/26/08 at 07:12 AMComments (1)
from Chris Zelkovich of the Toronto Star,
The movie is still in the development stages, with the younger Cherry’s script being massaged by award-winning writer Paul Quarrington. Once CBC gives it the green light, shooting is expected to start this summer with next spring’s Stanley Cup playoffs the target launch date.
Tim Cherry says the movie has been a long time in the works.
“I’ve been bugging Dad for years to do this,” he says. “I don’t know why he caved this time.”
It’s Not About No-Touch Icing
by Alanah McGinley on 03/24/08 at 03:02 PMComments (5)
From Ken Campbell at The Hockey News,
It was about as predictable as an episode of Three’s Company. The moment Kurtis Foster of the Minnesota Wild went hurtling into the boards and broke his leg last week trying to beat Torrey Mitchell of the San Jose Sharks to the puck, the usual hue and cry came from the hockey community calling for an immediate move to no-touch icing.
The loud dresser with the loud mouth who rules Canada during the first intermission on Saturday night was, of course, first in line, continuing to beat a nag that he has had for years.
How noble.

NHL Must Institute No-Touch Icing
by Paul on 03/22/08 at 09:14 PMComments (1)
from CBC Sports,
Cherry said the National Hockey League must institute no-touch icing precisely because Foster was forced to do what he did.
“Look, if you want to wear a visor, you can wear a visor, that’s your choice,” Cherry said to host Ron MacLean. “If you want to fight, you can fight, that’s your choice.
“[Foster] had no choice.... If he doesn’t go in, he’s chicken, and it’s too bad, what was he going to do? Hold up and let the guy go in? He has to go in, and that’s too bad.”
Update 10:07pm ET: Foster is currently healing, post-surgery. Below, we’ve added Youtube footage of Don Cherry’s complete comments on the matter:

Simon Broke The Code
by Paul on 12/23/07 at 07:42 AMComments (2)
from the CP via the Toronto Star,
Cherry said on CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada that he “understands” why Simon stomped on Pittsburgh Penguin Jarkko Ruutu’s leg during a game last weekend. The incident led to Simon’s 30-game suspension last Wednesday, the longest in NHL history for an on-ice incident.
“He broke the code, you never do anything like that, but you can understand it somehow,” said Cherry.

Preparing For Coaches Corner
by Paul on 12/08/07 at 06:01 AMComments (1)
from William Houston of the Globe and Mail,
Preparation begins on Sunday, the day after the Saturday night show.
“I start thinking about what I’m going to wear the next morning,” Cherry said. “I get the suit or jacket that I’m going to wear and I hang it up in my bedroom.
“Before I go to bed, I put different ties with it. So, I’m thinking about that suit all week. If I have a real good fitting suit, if I feel really good, I feel Coach’s Corner is better. I felt that way when I coached, too.”
Cherry watches NHL games almost every night of the week and he takes notes. But he doesn’t flip around the dial. He stays with one game from beginning to end.
Penalty Or Not
by Paul on 11/23/07 at 08:27 AMComments (0)
from the Ottawa Citizen,
No one wants to return to the pre-lockout days, when players water-skied off opponents, particularly grievous in the neutral zone. Still, must the NHL call the love taps on shin pads?
In some games, officials do.
On Hockey Night In Canada’s Coach’s Corner last Saturday, Don Cherry showed a set of highlights to illustrate the dubious nature of many slashing and hooking calls. On any given night in the NHL, a player brushing his stick against another player’s shin pads or pants can result in a penalty.

In the Coach’s Corner
by Alanah McGinley on 10/07/07 at 02:32 PMComments (1)
From the Edmonton Sun,
Don Cherry thinks Steve Downie got off easy.
The outspoken commentator said Downie should have been suspended 30 games for his preseason hit on Dean McAmmond during Saturday night’s segment of Coach’s Corner on CBC’s Hockey Night In Canada.
Cherry called the hit by the Philadelphia Flyers forward on the Senators defenceman a “cheap shot” and added that players shouldn’t hit like that in the preseason.
Video of Cherry’s comments can be viewed on the CBC video player. There is no direct link, but just click on the “Hockey Night in Canada” link on the left, then the sub-menu will provide a link to the October 6th edition of Coach’s Corner.
note: unfortunately, U.S. viewers may not be able to access the video, unless you have a way of accessing the page using a Canadian proxy IP.
