Top Not-So-Secret Agents

Sports Business Journal has pronounced the top 20 most influential sports agents working today and includes the ubiquitous Don Meehan in 13th spot—

Meehan, who started representing hockey players nearly 30 years ago, has dominated the NHL agent business for years. His Ontario-based firm represents more than 110 NHL players, including Nicklas Lidstrom, Jarome Iginla, Chris Pronger, Wade Redden, Henrik Lundqvist and Dion Phaneuf. This year, Meehan’s Newport Sports represented nine first-round draft selections, including five of the first six players taken. He also represented No. 1 overall pick Steven Stamkos. Meehan did, however, suffer a loss in the last two years, when superstar Alex Ovechkin fired him in late 2006.

Leafs Still Waiting on Frogren Deal

Earlier today were reports on AM 640 in Toronto, citing a Swedish newspaper which stated Jonas Frogren had been signed by the Maple Leafs.  But during the noon hour, Frogren himself gave an interview to FAN 590 and made no mention there was any contract in place yet.  (Which is why we didn’t post the news on KK before now.)

Now this from TSN:

The Toronto Maple Leafs had hoped to announce the signing of Swedish defenceman Jonas Frogren on Wednesday but the contract was rejected by the NHL’s head office.

“We are working with the NHL Players’ Association to resolve the matter,” said Don Meehan of Newport Sports, Frogren’s agent. “We remain hopeful it will get resolved.”

The league determined Frogren, 28, must be signed to an entry-level contract as a first-year NHL player despite his pro experience in Europe. The Leafs had signed Frogren to a standard contract.

CBA No Loss For Players

From Joe Starkey at the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review,

“If people are going to chastise professional athletes who are making a lot of money, they need to look at the deal we are probably going to end up signing,” [Jeremy] Roenick said.

As if the players would be forced to subsist on food stamps and ramen noodles.

Now look: Thomas Vanek makes $10 million, and the average salary has officially cracked $1.9 million, passing the pre-lockout figure of $1.83 million.

A crushing loss for the players?

“If there were those who viewed it in the words you use,” says player agent Don Meehan, “I don’t know how they could view it that way now.”

More NHLPA Email Talk

from Rick Westhead of the Toronto Star,

On the eve of a player agent meeting in Toronto tomorrow, the NHL Players’ Association has given to at least one veteran player copies of dozens of emails exchanged between disgraced former union executive director Ted Saskin and Don Meehan, hockey’s pre-eminent player agent.

Player agent Neil Sheehy and several other agents rebuffed in repeated attempts over the past months to obtain the emails from the union are scrambling to obtain the Meehan-Saskin emails hoping that they’ll reveal whether Meehan played an undisclosed role either in helping Saskin maintain his grip on his job, or in helping Saskin oust his predecessor, Bob Goodenow.

Columnist Was Wrong

from the Calgary Sun,

According to an eastern-based columnist, rising star defenceman Dion Phaneuf and his agent had rejected a contract proposal from the Flames.

Only one problem, said Phaneuf’s agent Don Meehan.

“We have never discussed a number,” he said yesterday.

Flames Hope To Avoid Offer Sheet For Phaneuf

from the Calgary Sun,

Hot on the heels of a six-year extension for goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff, there’s talk in Calgary the Flames might be a small step closer to signing Dion Phaneuf to a long-term contract.

The 22-year-old defenceman’s agent, Don Meehan, was in town last week, and it’s believed he spent time meeting with Flames general manager Darryl Sutter about a possible extension.

Sources say talks were informal and could help lead to a deal but no dollars were discussed.

Phaneuf’s entry-level contract expires at the end of this season, and as a restricted free agent, he’d be a prime candidate for an offer sheet from another team.

Meehan Issues “Notices of Libel”

from TSN,

Lawyers representing Toronto-based player agent Don Meehan have issued ‘’notices of libel’’ against Detroit Red Wing player Chris Chelios and an unspecified number of media outlets.

‘’We have sent out notices alleging libel to Mr. Chelios and various media,’’ said Meehan’s lawyer, Graham Smith of Goodman’s law firm in Toronto.

added 6:08pm, from the Hockey News,

Chelios said after learning the news Tuesday afternoon that he was misquoted and has “accused Don Meehan of nothing.

“It was always, ‘If he undermined the union’ and ‘If he acted inappropriately,’ “ Chelios said. “If there was any miscommunication in my quotes…I haven’t accused him of anything and I spoke to (the reporter) from the Free Press about it. He hasn’t been accused of anything by me.”
