Video- When Time Stopped On The Doughty Goal
by Paul on 02/02/12 at 09:46 AM ET
Comments (11)
from AaronPortzline of Puck-Rakers,
A twitchy finger in Los Angeles may have cost the Blue Jackets at least a point tonight in Staples Center. If the Jackets were battling for a playoff spot, this would be a heartbreaker. Instead, it’s a black mark on the NHL and just another lump in a season full of them.
Kings defenseman Drew Doughty scored at the end of an intense scramble with only 0.3 seconds remaining, giving Los Angeles a 3-2 victory over the Blue Jackets before a soldout crowd of 18,118. Except the goal shouldn’t have counted.
Replays shown by both Fox Sports Ohio and Fox Sports West, which covers the Kings, show the game clock mysteriously stopping for at least a full second with 1.8 seconds remaining. Had the clock kept running—the puck was still in play, so it should have—the buzzer would have sounded before Doughty dropped to a knee and buried the loose puck.

Doughty Needs To Find His Offensive Game
by Paul on 12/22/11 at 05:16 PM ET

from Nicholas J. Cotsonika of Yahoo,
After posting 59 points in 2009-10, Doughty entered last season as the trendy pick to win the Norris Trophy as the NHL’s best defenseman, even though he was only 20 years old. But he was limited to 40 points last season. And though the Kings paid him for his Norris potential – giving him an eight-year, $56 million deal after he sat out of training camp as a restricted free agent – he has only 10 points this season, on pace for only 27 in 77 games.
Teams aren’t stupid. They adjusted to Doughty, and now he has to adjust to them if he is to spark the Kings’ offense.
“Whether it’s on the power play or 5-on-5, it kind of seems like there’s a guy just glued to me at all times,” Doughty said. “It’s frustrating I’m not getting the points I used to, but at the same time, in order to be a good player in this league, I’ve got to find ways to get around that and find different ways to get pucks to the net and make offensive plays.”

Lars Eller Fined For Hit On Doughty

... here is the hit.
A little late in my opinion, not sure why it took so long to make this decision.
NEW YORK (December 10, 2011)—Montreal Canadiens forward Lars Eller has been fined $2,500, the maximum allowed under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for boarding Los Angeles Kings defenseman Drew Doughty in NHL Game No. 372 on Saturday, Dec. 3, in Los Angeles, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.
The incident occurred at 4:48 of the first period. A minor penalty for boarding was assessed on the play.

Everyone Wins In The Doughty Deal
by Paul on 09/30/11 at 11:01 AM ET
Comments (7)
from David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail,
On the face of it, Drew Doughty finally beat down the Los Angeles Kings, forcing them to accept his terms on a new contract.
But this is a win for the Kings just as it is for Doughty, 21, who agreed to an eight-year deal for an average of $7-million per year late Thursday night. The agreement ended a bitter standoff between Doughty and the Kings, which grew increasingly nasty in the last few weeks when the Kings refused to increase their offer beyond the $6.8-million per year centre Anze Kopitar, 24, is making. Doughty and his agent, Don Meehan, would not take less than $7-million a year.
By giving in to Doughty and Meehan, the Kings secured its most important player, who is already one of the league’s best defencemen, for the next eight years. It reassures a fragile fan base they are serious about winning.

Sounds As If The Kings Are Not Going To Budge On Doughty Offer
by Paul on 09/26/11 at 06:08 PM ET
Comments (0)
from Helene Elliott of the Fabulous Forum,
Tim Leiweke, president of the Kings’ parent company, AEG, said Monday he supports General Manager Dean Lombardi’s stance in negotiations with unsigned defenseman Drew Doughty and emphasized Lombardi’s offer of an average $6.8 million annually is based solely on allocating dollars to improve the team and maintaining a strong nucleus that will allow the Kings to compete for the Stanley Cup for years to come.
Doughty, a restricted free agent, remains at home in London, Canada, working out with a junior team while the Kings get deeper into training camp and prepare for their season-opening trip to Sweden and Germany.
Leiweke told The Times on Monday that the Kings are not trying to be cheap with Doughty and, in fact, plan to spend up to the salary cap of $64.3 million. But they want room to upgrade their talent before the trading deadline and maneuver in case of injuries, and paying Doughty the $7 million-plus that he’s seeking would change the allocation and budget and have long-term implications.

Doughty Causing “Crisis” in LA?

From Jamie Fitzpatrick at About.com Hockey:
If you want crisis, look to Los Angeles, where the Drew Doughty impasse threatens to cut down a promising Kings’ season before it even begins.
The Kings insist it’s business as usual without their franchise defenseman. They aren’t fooling anyone.

Do The Right Thing Drew
by Paul on 09/17/11 at 10:55 PM ET
Comments (5)
from Helene Elliott of the LA Times,
Drew Doughty and his agent, Don Meehan, are entitled to ask the Kings for as many millions of dollars as their calculators have digits.
They can cite Doughty’s fine rookie season and stellar follow-up, which included an Olympic gold medal and top-three Norris Trophy finish. They can downplay his uneven third season by emphasizing his remarkable mobility, vision and scoring potential.
But sometime soon they must recognize that it’s more important for Doughty to score points on the ice than make points at the bargaining table.
Doughty would have gained more by participating in the first training camp sessions Saturday than he will gain if he ultimately prevails in a senseless battle.

All Dean Lombardi On Drew Doughty Holdout
by Paul on 09/16/11 at 02:05 PM ET
Comments (2)
from Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider,
Question: You’re now in a holdout situation with Doughty. What kind of update can you give about his status and the negotiations?
LOMBARDI: “Obviously we’re very disappointed that he’s not here. I don’t think it’s any secret, what we think of this player and his abilities and what his potential is. So that’s certainly not an issue, as far as the quality of the player or the quality of the person. We hold both to high regard. That said, a couple things. I don’t want to get into the intricacies what we offered, in terms of the minute details. It’s safe to say that, as far as the big picture within the league, we certainly made him an offer that puts him amongst the top defensemen in the league. Then you look at your team. It’s no secret that he would be at the top of our team. Then, thirdly, even thought I think you know how I feel philosophically about paying for potential, it’s part of the system unfortunately. But the third thing that’s critical to us is the allocation. Where we’re at now, we certainly stretched the limit in terms of paying him amongst the top players in the league, paying him appropriately within the team’s salary structure and, most importantly, being able to keep this group together.
Update 3:48pm ET: ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun on Twitter offers this reminder—
Worth noting that technically speaking, Doughty is not a holdout , he’s an unsigned RFA. Not that Kings fan will feel any better.

Kings Making News For The Wrong Reason
by Paul on 09/15/11 at 09:03 PM ET
Comments (0)
from Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider,
Once again, the Kings have managed to put themselves in the middle of one of hockey’s messiest offseason stories. Last year, they dipped their toe into the Ilya Kovalchuk situation and ended up getting stuck in free-agent quicksand for a month. Now it’s Drew Doughty’s contract, a situation they hoped to have resolved more than two months ago. Remember, at one point, the Kings hoped to have Doughty signed prior to the start of the free-agency period, so they knew how much money they could offer Brad Richards in their low-profile attempt to sign Richards. Now, no Richards, no Doughty.
Perhaps that was part of the problem. From their perspective, the Kings went big early, deciding in July that they would be willing to give Doughty a contract equal to — or actually, in total, greater than — the one they gave Anze Kopitar in 2008. They thought that would be enough. By all accounts, it isn’t. Thus the problem. The Kings showed, in July, what they claimed (and still claim) was their best hand, and for two months they have remained adamant that they won’t budge. Other offers have been exchanged, at different levels, but nothing has significantly changed.

Drew Doughty and Kings Still Negotiating

From Pierre LeBrun at ESPN:
Drew Doughty and the Kings remained at an impasse Wednesday, but that can change with one phone call. Sources told ESPN.com that the Kings won’t pay Doughty more than the $6.8 million Anze Kopitar makes on average per season.
Further, Bob McKenzie of TSN reported late Tuesday night that the Kings won’t do a deal for less than seven years.
In a nutshell, both term and salary remain an issue. But like I said, it just takes one phone call.

If you think that determining who the top goalie will be for fantasy teams this season is tough, wait until you attempt to sift through the number of defensemen who have been at or near the top of the scoring race the past couple seasons. I attempted to narrow down this list to five defensemen, but I had waaaay too difficult a time with that. Plus I’d be subjecting myself to far too much criticism from the masses! The Latest On Drew Doughty
by Paul on 08/10/11 at 07:07 PM ET

from Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider,
The Kings have a long-term offer on the table, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the issue extend into late August, or perhaps even into September. It’s worth noting that Doughty’s agent, Don Meehan, also represented Evgeni Nabokov when, in 2002, Nabokov held out before signing a contract with the San Jose Sharks (and then-GM Lombardi) in late October.
As for the current Doughty negotiations, Lombardi said today, “I think it’s fair to say that in the last conversation, we set the parameters, as to where we feel his contract should be. We talked about a number of scenarios, and I guess now it’s their move. They never really responded.”

Still Working On The Doughty Deal
by Paul on 07/29/11 at 09:52 AM ET

from E.J. Hradek of NHL.com,
If you’re a Los Angeles Kings fan worried about the slow-moving contract negotiations between dynamic young defenseman Drew Doughty and the team, GM Dean Lombardi has a message for you.
“This isn’t a standoff like we’ve been seeing in Washington,” Lombardi said, joking about the current federal government gridlock as a way to find perspective for his efforts to re-sign Doughty. “I’m fairly confident that we’ll be able to get this done.”
The Kings boss and Doughty’s representatives (Don Meehan and Mark Guy of Newport Sports Management) have been in communication during the past few days in an effort to move the conversation toward a resolution.
“We’ve been talking,” Lombardi said. “We’re trying to hammer it out, but I don’t think I really have a handle on it yet.”

Ah, the summertime… bikinis, baseball, hot dogs, humidity, high temps, vacations and ABSURD trade rumors. I realize that the probability of an absurd trade rumor making the rounds is much higher during the months between the start of unrestricted free agency and the opening of training camps, but sometimes I have just got to shake my head and tell you that something isn’t going to happen.
The interesting thing about the rumors that have actually prompted me to sit down and write a blog contradicting them is that they seemingly always revolve around Evgeni Malkin.

Richards Happy In LA, Up Next Is Doughty
by Paul on 07/28/11 at 07:08 AM ET
Comments (0)
from Helene Elliott of the LA Times,
Center Mike Richards was still torn about being traded from Philadelphia to Los Angeles a month after the surprising deal was done. His perspective changed after he took a stroll along a South Bay beach.
“I started thinking it’s not a bad place to be and not a bad place to start a new career,” he said Wednesday.
Richards, projected to ease the scoring burden carried by top-line center Anze Kopitar, got his new uniform Wednesday in El Segundo and said he looked forward to joining a team that “made a lot of big steps in the last couple years.” The next step for the Kings will be to re-sign restricted free-agent defenseman Drew Doughty, but that doesn’t appear to be imminent.
General Manager Dean Lombardi said he and Doughty’s agent, Don Meehan, on Tuesday had their first extended conversation in a while.
“It’s safe to say we’re still having dialogue. Just keep trying to move forward,” Lombardi said. “We’ll be talking again here shortly. … We’re still on track.”

What Is Doughty’s Signing Number?
by Paul on 07/13/11 at 07:19 AM ET
Comments (0)
from Helene Elliott of the LA Times,
Don Meehan, who teams with Mark Guy in representing Doughty, said Tuesday he hadn’t spoken to the Kings about Doughty since June 23. Meehan said he assumed the Kings were focusing on their trade for Mike Richards and (ultimately futile) pursuit of free agent Brad Richards, but those deals are long done.
It’s believed the Kings are offering up to nine years at more than $6.5 million per year.
“I think he’d be happy to stay if we agree upon terms that are acceptable to him,” Meehan said. “And those are our instructions, to negotiate with L.A. on that basis to secure something that he’d be happy with.”
Kings General Manager Dean Lombardi said the sides haven’t agreed on term or money. “They both kind of work hand in hand,” he said.
There’s no salary comparison for Doughty, who struggled at times last season but has franchise-player talent. Doughty and Tampa Bay forward Steven Stamkos, chosen second and first, respectively, in the 2008 entry draft, could create a new tier behind the league-high cap hits of Washington’s Alexander Ovechkin ($9.538 million) and Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin ($8.7 million each).

Doughty Contract Process Moving Slowly

from Helene Elliott of The Fabulous Forum,
Asked Tuesday if there were anything new regarding his negotiations with Doughty, Lombardi said no, and added this via email:
“I am getting the feeling on Drew that unfortunately this could take a while. As we just saw this past week free agency produces a frenzy for players at all levels. We must be judicious about not getting into this market for our own players. Therefore it is critical with Drew that the dollars reflect a fair rate of return regarding the term of the contract. We must be prepared to do what it takes to get it right.”
Lombardi also said the Kings would match any offer sheet Doughty might sign with another team.

Kings Make Major Offer To Doughty
by Paul on 06/19/11 at 08:08 AM ET
Comments (7)
from Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider,
• Within the past few days, the Kings have made a “major” offer to Drew Doughty’s agent. Lombardi has made two trips to Toronto — location of the office of Don Meehan’s, Doughty’s agent — within the past four weeks, and the Kings would like to get a deal done before the draft, if possible. Lombardi said he is certainly aware of the risk of an offer sheet to Doughty but is not overly concerned.
• The Kings are still in the market for a top-level forward, either through free agency or trade. Lombardi said that even if it was guaranteed that Dustin Penner would have a big season, statistically, the Kings would still seek outside help to improve their scoring numbers, both 5-and-5 and on the power play.

Kings Thinking Short-Term With Doughty
by Paul on 11/21/10 at 09:39 AM ET

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,
I wrote a few weeks ago that the Kings were drawing up different contract proposals for Doughty’s camp. Talks, as far as I can tell, still haven’t begun, but one thing I was told Friday is that the Kings at this point are leaning toward a short-term deal instead of the multiyear deals you usually see for these young stars; the reason being that the Kings are weary of the uncertainty of the next CBA. I don’t think you can rule out a long-term deal, because, after all, it all depends on the money, but short term is where the Kings are leaning right now.

Looks As If Cole Will Not Be Disciplined For Doughty Hit
by Paul on 10/21/10 at 04:19 PM ET

from Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider,
Given the time of day — beyond 4:30 p.m. in the East — it’s highly unlikely that Carolina’s Erik Cole will receive any supplemental discipline for his hit on Drew Doughty last night. Looking at the video clip, it seems clear that the hit was late. The question would be whether it falls into any of the other categories that would qualify it for discipline. Apparently, the league has decided it does not. This morning, I asked Terry Murray whether he had gotten a further look at the hit and what he thought of it.

More Work For Colin Campbell
by Paul on 10/21/10 at 11:30 AM ET
Comments (0)
from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
More details should emerge later today about the extent of Drew Doughty’s upper-body injury, but in the meantime, it looks like it could be another busy day for Colin Campbell, the NHL’s chief disciplinarian, reviewing videotape and trying to administer the NHL’s new commitment to getting blindside head shots out of the game.
Doughty, the Los Angeles Kings’ defenceman and early-season Norris Trophy favorite, was injured in the opening period of Wednesday’s 4-3 win over the visiting Carolina Hurricanes on a play that looked enough like Shane Doan’s suspension-worthy hit on Dan Sexton to come under official NHL scrutiny. The league, at least, thought Doan’s blindside hit was suspension-worthy and fell afoul of the new blind-side head-shot rule. Doan’s view was that he was merely taking Sexton’s ice away, and that he’d skated himself into good enough position so that the Anaheim Ducks’ forward could see the contact coming. In Doan’s view, it was a legal check.
Replays of the hit that Hurricanes’ forward Erik Cole delivered on Doughty hit was at the very least late - really late, long after Doughty had given up possession of the puck.
continued and if you missed the hit, watch it here...

JJ’s Three Cheers: 10/21/10
by Jon Jordan on 10/21/10 at 08:33 AM ET
Comments (0)
Today’s three cheers for last night’s top performers in NHL action:
***Cheers to Chicago’s Marty Turco, who made 36 saves and held the fort for the ‘Hawks in the shootout for a 2-1 decision over the Vancouver Canucks. Turco only had to make one save in the breakaway tiebreaker, on Mikael Samuelsson, but Roberto Luongo stopped none at the other end and the Blackhawks earned the extra point in turn. Luongo was good during the actual game, making 31 saves of his own and earning third star honors, but what’s going on with his early season numbers? A 3.38 goals-against and an .888 save percentage isn’t exactly the Bobby Lu Canucks fans expect, nor is the 2-3-2 mark for their club. Surely, it’s only a matter of time before he (and the team) turns it around. (Right?)

Drew Doughty Out With Upper Body Injury
by Paul on 10/21/10 at 07:44 AM ET
Comments (3)
via Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider,
It’s still a little difficult to piece together exactly what happened with the hit by Erik Cole on Drew Doughty in the first period, the hit that forced Doughty from the game. Terry Murray was uncharacteristically tight-lipped about the play after the game, which leads me to believe that he was biting his tongue and didn’t want to comment on the play.
Of the injury, Murray said only, “It was the Cole hit, in the neutral zone. Doughty carried the puck out of our zone, and the puck had long gone. He didn’t have it for a long way when the hit happened.”

from Rich Hammond of LA Kings Insider, I
s it too early in his career to start the “Doughty for Norris” campaign? Drew Doughty is only 20, in his second NHL season, but he enters tonight’s games tied for third in the NHL among scoring defensemen, with 53 points in 71 games. Doughty’s plus-17 rating is 14th among defensemen and his average ice time (24:56) is 12th.

Can The Leafs Draft A Player Like Drew Doughty?

from Mark Zwolinski of the Toronto Star,
The Maple Leafs are on the verge of a fifth consecutive non-playoff season, and they have yet to draft a player over that span with the instant, high-level success that Drew Doughty will bring on Tuesday night when the Los Angeles Kings make a rare visit to Toronto.
Doughty, from London, Ont., the second overall pick in the 2008 draft, comes to Toronto with a stellar resumé, and as much promise as any teenage defenceman to stick in the NHL since Bobby Orr.
“Well, I’ve been around a long time,” Kings coach Terry Murray said Sunday. “I remember Ray Bourque coming into the league as an 18-year-old and he was a force for the Boston Bruins right from his first year. I watched Paul Coffey over his career and I coached him in Philadelphia, and he was great as a teenager. I had Scott Stevens as an 18-year-old in Washington, and going back to when I was a player, I can remember (Orr) as a teenager and no one was as good as him. ... That’s a special group of players and Drew belongs in that class.”

“I knew I had a shot at one of those last spots there. Getting that phone call this morning was surprising but definitely one of my greatest moments.”

Don’t Forget Doughty For The Calder

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,
At this point, with Steve Mason carrying the Columbus Blue Jackets to their first playoff berth, it would be a shock if the stellar netminder didn’t win the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year.
And we’re not here to dispel that. He’s the obvious choice. But we are here today to make a case with our fellow members of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association, who vote for the Calder Trophy, not to forget a defenseman with the Los Angeles Kings who may not have caught the attention of most fans, but definitely the rest of the league.
“Drew Doughty is a special, special player,” an NHL coach told ESPN.com. “To me, he’s a young Scott Niedermayer.”

from Marc Crawford of Blogs and Columns at CBC,
I have watched many a game this year involving the Los Angeles Kings and one of the players who has stood out for me is their emerging superstar defenceman in Drew Doughty.
While he is a gifted puck handler and an extremely quick skater, what I enjoy most about watching his games is the interaction he has with his partner on defence, veteran Sean O’Donnell.
With his 15-plus years of experience, O’Donnell is the perfect foil for Doughty.

The Nurturing Of Drew Doughty

from Chris Foster of the LA Times,
(Drew) Doughty, the second overall pick in June, walked out of the Ontario Hockey League in spring and into the Kings’ lineup in fall. He logs 25 minutes a game, showing sleight-of-hand skills handling the puck and a he-shoots-he-scores ability from the blue line.
Such a package needed to be handled with care. Where to store him away from the rink was easy. You can even set it to music.
The “I Love L.A.” life is handled by defenseman Matt Greene, who was asked to take in Doughty at his Hermosa Beach residence. The “On the Road Again” chore is handled by Dustin Brown, who rooms with Doughty on trips.
It’s a tag-team big brother setup that strays into parenting at times.
Said Brown: “He sleeps for hours. I have to make sure he gets out of bed and gets to the rink on time.”
Said Greene: “I have a five-second buffer that I employ with him. Just think before you talk.”

Drew Doughty Playing Like The Calder Winner
by Paul on 11/16/08 at 02:09 PM ET

from Brian Costello of the Hockey News,
I’ve only seen the Los Angeles Kings play a couple of games this season, but I’ve already penciled in the name Drew Doughty next to Calder Trophy on my virtual NHL awards ballot.
This 18-year-old man-child is the real deal. On a young Kings lineup, Doughty plays the seasoned vet. He logs the second most minutes on the team, quarterbacks the power play and is the steadiest defenseman on the Kings in 5-on-5 situations.

Some Gems in Los Angeles

From Allan Muir at Sports Illustrated:
I was looking forward to working Thursday night’s game between the Stars and the Kings for one reason—and no, it wasn’t to see how the stunningly out-of-sorts Marty Turco would shoot himself in the foot this time. Thursday was my first chance to catch the early leader for the Calder Trophy: Los Angeles defender Drew Doughty, in person. And brother, the 18-year-old did not disappoint.

One Happy Family

from Cathy Boyd at the Londoner,
The enduring myth of the overnight success is as old as sport itself. Although a fortunate few have managed to thwart the odds, for most athletes – and more specifically young players trying to make the National Hockey League – the road to stardom is long and unusually arduous.
No one knows this better than London’s own Drew Doughty, a defenceman who was second pick overall in the 2008 NHL draft and the newest member of the Los Angeles Kings organization….
Only coffee beans could be more grounded than Drew and he has his family to thank for that. Drew’s parents, Connie and Paul, two of the most self-effacing people you would ever want to meet, are at the forefront of this success story.
The NHL draft is often viewed as a celebration of sorts, not just the players but their families too – a reminder of all the sacrifices made along the way, the tournament travel, the hotel stays, the expenses.

Guest writer Erin Nicks is covering the NHL Entry Draft in Ottawa for Kukla’s Korner this weekend.
By Erin Nicks
Blue-chip defenceman Drew Doughty wants to jump immediately into the NHL with both feet—and many think he’s capable of doing so. After a conversation with him yesterday, you get a pretty clear idea of where he’s hoping to land.
