Oilers Talk

via Dan Tencer of 630 CHED,

With less than 48 hours to go before free agency, Oilers GM Steve Tambellini is focusing his efforts on two of his own key free agents. The club has tendered what they believe to be a “very strong” 1 year offer to goaltender Dwayne Roloson. But, Tambellini isn’t sure if Roloson is going to take the offer. “It’s Dwayne’s choice,” he says. “He’s earned the right to free agency and if he thinks he can do better elsewhere, maybe (he’ll leave). We’ve got a day and a half to go.”

Tambellini says they also hope to come to terms soon with defenseman Denis Grebeshkov. “Denis is in our plans and we’ll get moving on that soon,” Tambellini says. He admitted that the delay in negotiation so far was due to the Oilers wanting to see what was available on the trade market.

The Value Of Dwayne Roloson

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,

The NHL’s free-agent doors swing wide open in 28 days, but goalie Dwayne Roloson still hasn’t received a contract offer from the Edmonton Oilers.

Roloson’s age obviously is a factor—he turns 40 in October—so the Oilers may not be willing to pitch anything more than a one-year deal.

“We haven’t started talking at all,” Roloson said in a telephone interview on Tuesday. “But they’ve had other issues to get resolved ... lots to do with hiring coaches and firing coaches.”

Oilers general manager GM Steve Tambellini, who attended meetings in Pittsburgh on Tuesday, said the two sides would begin serious negotiations on a new contract very soon. But how many years the Oilers want to offer and how much money is available is anybody’s guess.

Morning Line

OK, I’ll say it. Oilers goaltender Dwayne Roloson is the whiniest player in the NHL. Every game, an issue. Yes, Jared Boll bumped him a few times and he could have been called for goaltender interference early in the game. But Roloson acts a little girl who had her pigtails yanked. Not very flattering, really.

Suspension For Roloson?

from David Staples of The Cult of Hockey,

The NHL is as soft on crime as the most liberal, feeling-sorry-for-criminals judge in the Dominion, so don’t expect Dwayne Roloson to be suspended for his uppercut, goalie stick chop at Daniel Cleary’s private parts.

But Roloson deserves to be out a few games for that one. Imagine the upset and anger in Edmonton if an opposition goalie did that to Ales Hemsky.

Roloson Knows He Is In A Backup Role

from Mark Spector of Sportsnet,

So Roloson knows what he is these days. He’ll even admit it: “Insurance.”

He’s not complaining, or trying to make waves. He’s just a guy who has been around hockey long enough that he doesn’t need a gypsy to read the cards being dealt at Oilers camp this fall.

His mandate?

“Don’t let them put you in a spot to be the backup,” Roloson said on Wednesday. “Do whatever you can do to prove that you can play, that you want to play. That’s all I can do: take advantage of the playing time that they’re giving me, and do the best that I can.”

On Flyers’ Coach John Stevens

From Elliotte Friedman at CBC,

“His brother owned the one gym in town,” Roloson said. “And we would meet him there to work out. John took it very seriously, and eventually we did, too.”

“I believe his nickname was Rambo, because of how hard he worked out,” Blake said.

Stevens is still in excellent shape and expects nothing less from his players. During the off-day between Games 3 and 4 of this series, the Flyers didn’t skate but did have a weight-training workout.

But his impact extended beyond the exercise room.

Anyone Want Roloson

from the Edmonton Sun,

Dwayne Roloson hasn’t come right out and asked for a trade, but he’s already moved his family out of town and says if a choice has to be made between sitting in Edmonton and playing somewhere else, there’s no choice to be made.

At some point, and he’s been at that point for some time, the need to play outweighs a guy’s fondness for a city and an organization.

“Definitely,” said Roloson, who hasn’t played a game in 21 days, and isn’t scheduled to start tonight in Dallas. “It’s outweighs it big time.”

Average Goaltending Won’t Get It Done In Edmonton

from the Edmonton Sun,

“It’s our job to do that, tonight I didn’t,” he said, adding he’s been fighting it a bit lately. “I’m trying to force myself to make a save, I have to relax and let the puck come to me. I’m not reading the play as well as I normally do.”

MacTavish has a team that has to rely on its goaltender, so expect him to go with the hot hand from here on in. And right now, it ain’t Roloson.

“We can’t win right now with average goaltending, I don’t think there’s many teams that can, and in my estimation tonight he was average,” said the coach.

“He’s not playing at the level that he has played. That’s obvious. But the one thing he’s got going for him is a bunch of mental toughness and a bunch of battle.”

Officer Roloson

from the Edmonton Journal,

Roli the Goalie, a member of the Minnesota Wild from 2001 to 2006, joined the ranks of St. Paul’s finest when he was named “an honorary policeman.” “Extremely honoured to be part of the ceremony ... very nice that they did it,” said Roloson, who got a framed plaque and a badge.

Roloson was saluted along with five other people. Only about 10 people have been honoured by the police, he said, and he is the only athlete.
