via Chip Alexander of the News & Observer,
Canes center Eric Staal will miss some games because of an upper-body injury suffered Sunday against the San Jose Sharks, general manager Jim Rutherford said today.
Staal has played in 349 consecutive regular-season games, but that streak will end, Rutherford said. He has missed just one game in his career, late in his rookie season.

Copmetition In The Staal Family

from Damian Cox of the Toronto Star,
Shame on Steve Yzerman. The country was in a recession and he could’ve saved Hockey Canada some money.
After all, he really didn’t need to make three separate calls to the 807 area code in early July. One would have sufficed. Or maybe a conference call.
The three Staal boys, you see, were all together at their Thunder Bay “camps” – cottages in southern Ontario parlance – when the time came for Yzerman and his staff to start contacting those NHL players who would be invited to Team Canada’s summer orientation camp.

Brother vs. Brother
by Paul on 05/15/09 at 02:28 PM ET

from TSN,
Eric and Jordan Staal are about to go where only the Espositos, the Plagers and the McCrearys have gone before.
When the puck drops Monday night on TSN for the opening game of the Carolina Hurricanes/Pittsburgh Penguins series, it will mark only the fifth time in NHL history that siblings have skated against each other in the Conference finals. The last time a brother act such as this occurred was in 1974 when Phil Esposito’s Bruins faced Tony’s Blackhawks. The rarity of the occurrence was not lost on the Staals.
“This is the best time of the year to play hockey,” said Eric in a conference call held by the NHL on Friday. “When brothers are playing against each other in the Conference finals it’s exciting not only four yourselves but for the rest of your family for sure.”

The Difference Maker

from Luke DeCock of the News & Observer,
When Eric Staal lifts his team and puts it on his shoulders, there’s no telling how far he can take it.
There were plenty of Game 3 heroes for the Carolina Hurricanes, from Jussi “The Finnisher” Jokinen scoring yet another winning goal, to Cam Ward making a save on Milan Lucic to open overtime, to Sergei Samsonov scoring his first goal of the playoffs against his former team.
But on a night the Hurricanes did just about everything but score yet still found themselves trailing the Boston Bruins, Staal again made himself the difference.

Staal Will Have A Giant Shadow

from Dave Droschak of CarolinaHurricanes.com,
Staal won’t be able to breathe in this series without the 6-foot-9, 270-pound Chara knowing if the Carolina star is chewing Dentyne or Trident. Bank on it.
“It doesn’t matter who we play. Eric Staal is going to see, not just one, but different guys shift-by-shift. He gets a lot of attention. That’s what All-Star players get,” said Carolina general manager Jim Rutherford.
“I don’t think I played my best against them this year,” added Staal, who including playoffs has logged a remarkable 368 consecutive games. “I’ve had success against Boston in the past and I like playing in their building. So, it’s about getting ready to play in this series now. The regular season doesn’t really matter this time of year.”

from David Amber of ESPN,
Q: With Jared also on the NHL horizon, there will soon be four Staal brothers in the league. How much do you notice when you’re on the ice against one of your brothers?
A: You notice every time. They’re pretty good players, so you need to keep an eye on them or they can do some damage against you. We’re all competitive guys, so every time they’re on the ice I recognize the situation. It makes it fun, but no one wants to lose to their brother.
Q: Would you ever drop the gloves with one of your brothers?
A: [Laughs] I don’t know. I think I would just start laughing if it ever came to that. I remember against Marc at [Madison Square Garden], we were up by a couple of goals with the time running out and we were in the corner, and I got him in a headlock and I was laughing. I couldn’t stop laughing. He got really mad at me, but we didn’t drop the gloves.

from Chip Alexander of Lord Stanley’s Blog,
Carolina Hurricanes general Jim Rutherford said today that the team hoped to sign star forward Eric Staal to a long-term contract in the next week to 10 days.
Rutherford would not disclose the financial figures being discussed, but it is believed Staal could receive a seven- or eight-year contract that will pay him between $7 million and $10 million a year.
“We’re continuing to talk and have talked more of late,” Rutherford said. “I would expect us to get a deal done soon. We’re getting to the point we’re just trying to fine-tune it.”

Canes Hope To Erase Last Season

from TBTV,
“It was a challenging year at times. We had some injuries, but we still felt we should have been there and to me, that’s all I’m focused on, trying to help my team get to the playoffs.”
(Eric) Staal readily admits the disappointment of an unsuccessful season isn’t an easy feeling to part with, faced with a summer to stew over what might have been had they managed to win the final game on their regular season slate.
“That’s kind of what everyone’s going to remember coming into camp,” he said. “There’s going to be a lot of guys raring to go and erase that as quickly as possible.”

“Obviously, I’m very close to Erik,” Staal said. “I’ve been good friends with him since the moment I came into the league. He was one of those guys who was there my first year and he did anything to help out as a friend and roommate. Along the way we became very close.
“When you develop a friendship with someone, to see them get traded is tough. It was hard for me to hear but it’s part of the game, part of the business and you have to kind of move forward I guess.”

Eric Staal has left Team Canada at the World Championships to join his family and will understandably be missing his game scheduled for Wednesday. Jordan Staal is said to be playing tonight for the Pittsburgh Penguins, then flying home briefly tomorrow to attend the funeral. He isn’t expected to miss any games.

Interview Transcript: The Staal Brothers
by Alanah McGinley on 03/26/08 at 03:10 PM ET

Today, the NHL arranged a teleconference call for the media, speaking with the Staal brothers: Eric of the Carolina Hurricanes, Marc of the New York Rangers and Jordan of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Pittsburgh has already clinched a spot in the playoffs, and Carolina leads their division and the Rangers are sixth in the East. If all three clubs make the playoffs, the brothers would become the first set of three brothers to compete in the post-season since 1992 when and the Brotens (Aaron, Neil and Paul) and the Sutters (Brent, Rich and Ron) all competed in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Q. Marc and Jordan, I think you guys faced in each in the OHL Playoffs a few years back. I was wondering for each of you what your most vivid memory of that season was competing against each other, if there were any memorable one-on-one battles?

The New Canes Leader

from Scott Burnside of ESPN,
But hockey teams are surprisingly consistent in what nourishes them, what pushes them forward. Yes, good coaching, a sense of direction from management and good luck are all important. But all good teams need someone to lead them, to show them that adversity isn’t a wall, but a challenge.
In the Carolina Hurricanes’ dressing room Eric Staal has become that man.
“It’s unfair to say he’s the reason why we’re where we are,” Carolina coach Peter Laviolette told ESPN.com this week. “But if you have a hard-working team, there has to be somebody that you look to. This has been a chance to look into Eric Staal and see what he’s all about. I think everybody likes what they’ve seen.”

Eric Staal Appears OK After Hit From Behind
by Paul on 03/06/08 at 10:16 PM ET

via Lord Stanley’s Blog at the News & Observer,
Eric Staal has apparently escaped a serious injury after he was hit head-first into the boards from behind by Aaron Voros.
With 14:01 to play in the game Voros ran Staal into the boards in front of the Minnesota bench from behind.
After lying on the ice in front of the Minnesota bench, Staal skated gingerly to the Carolina bench as a five-on-five brawl broke out on the ice. As the referees sorted out the mess, Staal could clearly be seen saying “I’m fine” to his teammates.
Voros, though, may be in trouble. He received a major penalty for boarding and likely faces a suspension from the NHL.
