Erik Cole Out With Fractured Leg

Tests today revealed that Erik Cole suffered a fracture in his lower left leg from last night’s collision with Boston’s Dennis Wideman and will miss 4-6 weeks of game action.
Not exactly what the Canes wanted to hear after an 0-2 start to the season, and certainly some added injury to the insult of the lopsided loss in Boston. A little more adversity than the team had hoped for by the third game of the season, but they’ve had to overcome similar circumstances in the past. Cole had missed Sunday’s practice with the injury, with Tuomo Ruutu moving to Eric Staal’s wing.

Cooke Hit On Cole

The Hurricanes lost Erik Cole midway through the third period after Pittsburgh’s Matt Cooke caught him knee-on-knee in front of the Pittsburgh net. Cole played only one shift after that, and an angry Paul Maurice wasn’t happy about the hit afterward.
Asked if he thought it was a knee-on-knee hit, with the implication that it was an illegal one, a curt Maurice said, “Yes, I did. I felt that was, yeah.”
Cole officially has a “lower body” injury, but he clearly hurt his left knee in the collision. Cooke said the contact was accidental.
“He was cutting across the middle,” Cooke said. “I turned sideways to hit him, and he turned the other way. I almost fell over, too.”

Question: Before you were traded last summer, you spent the first six seasons of your career in Carolina. What was it like to spend time in a market that takes its hockey a little more seriously than Raleigh, N.C.?
Cole: It’s obviously different on a day-to-day basis. There’s a lot more media coverage. They tend to overanalyze things a little bit more than other markets. At the same, it was exciting. It keeps you focused on the details and you make sure you’re working hard up there because they’re pretty savvy and recognize when a player isn’t working hard every night.

The unknown intangible with Cole, or any other player, is how a trade will affect the team’s chemistry.
“It’s a big factor,” said vice president Cam Neely. “You really take that into account, for sure. We’ve got a good group of guys, character guys."…
“It’s a really open group,” said Andrew Ference. “Guys get along. Everybody feels comfortable, from the young guys all the way up. I think everybody feels really comfortable in this room.”
The concern is whether a deadline deal could alter the mood, especially if a roster player gets shipped out.

Would Cole Be A Fit In Boston?

The Oilers, still in the hunt for one of the final playoff seeds in the Western Conference, are in need of a winger to play on the Shawn Horcoff-Ales Hemsky line. They also could use help at the faceoff circle, where Horcoff takes most of the draws.
The Bruins would have great interest in ex-Hurricanes winger Erik Cole, the big, smooth-skating winger. He has 12 goals and 22 points in 50 games this season. Cole, 30, who is making $4 million this season, becomes an unrestricted free agent July 1. The Bruins could fit him into the salary cap because they have Marco Sturm’s $3.5 million at their disposal, following the German winger’s season-ending knee surgery.
The Oilers likely would target the likes of winger Vladimir Sobotka (now in Providence) and/or defenseman Matt Hunwick (sidelined with flu-like symptoms) in a swap for Cole.

So I’ll predict that this year (Erik) Cole get both kinds of luck, good and bad, and put him at 63 games and 55 points.
He will also hit, bleed, screen, bull, scrape, muck and grind enough to conjure up valid visions of Ryan Smyth.
And, as the season progresses, all of that will put Kevin Lowe in the same extremely difficult position as he was with Smyth: figuring just out how much to pay over how many years for a skilled, tough and admirable player, but one with a history of injury.
It will be a difficult, controversial decision and it’s one of the main story lines of the year

Cole Will Play His Game

But if you think the seriousness of the injury has made the power forward shy away from the heavy going, think again.
“You learn to play the game a certain way, and if that style’s been successful and you’ve come all this way, it’s hard to change,” Cole said earlier this week as he skated with several other NHLers at Kinsmen Arena, preparing for the opening of the Oilers’ main training camp on Friday, Sept. 19.
“I’ve always played a hard-nosed style.” Cole was apprehensive in his first playoff game after breaking his neck. His Carolina teammates had unexpectedly lost Game 5 of the final in overtime on Fernando Pisani’s short-handed goal and had to fly clear across the continent after coming tantalizingly close to winning the series on home ice.
“It wasn’t an ideal situation to play my first game,” confessed Cole.

Cole Wants To Play A Big Role In Edmonton

Cole and his wife had just made a quick trip to Edmonton from their home in upstate New York.
They will return in August with their two children, aged seven and four.
“This is more about opportunity. There’s going to be a tremendous opportunity for me to play with two tremendous hockey players, and that’s not to say I wasn’t in Carolina, but I’m looking to play a bigger role, more of a leadership role,” said Cole.
“I’m going from a team where I was maybe in the middle of the road, maybe even one of the younger guys, to being the old goat in the room. I’m excited about everything.”

Cole Taken Off The Ice - Released From The Hospital

Skating low and fast down the right side chasing the puck moments earlier, (Erik) Cole appeared to fall forward as Panthers defenseman Jassen Cullimore got entangled with him as he leaned into Cole.
Cole was taken to the nearby Cleveland Clinic in Weston, Fla., for observation after laying motionless on the ice for several minutes.
Team officials reported that Cole had demonstrated some movement in his limbs and had some pain in his trapezius muscle covering the upper back and shoulder region.
A team release later said that Cole had been released from the hospital and cleared to fly to Tampa with the team this morning. A CT scan was negative.

Erik Cole Injured in Pick Up Soccer Game

A night after Scott Walker partially collapsed on the ice as he skated to the bench, the Carolina Hurricanes lost Erik Cole without him so much as lacing up a skate.
Cole was a late scratch for Saturday’s 3-2 overtime loss to the Philadelphia Flyers after injuring a foot while playing soccer before the game. Cole is definitely out for Monday’s game against the Vancouver Canucks and doubtful for Carolina’s other three games this week.
With Walker and Andrew Ladd already out, the Hurricanes were down to 10 forwards and dressed only 17 skaters against the Flyers.
