Wilson Hit On Moreau - Clean Or Dirty?

The latest highlight reel illegal hit was handed out by Colorado defenceman Ryan Wilson, 22, a tough rookie defenceman trying to make his mark in the NHL. In Wednesday night’s game in Edmonton, Oiler forward Ethan Moreau charged for the puck, which sat near centre ice. Moreau kept his eyes on the puck, his head down, as he stretched to tip it forward into Colorado’s end.
He wasn’t watching as Wilson came in for a hit.
Now such a hit would have been borderline legal if Wilson hadn’t put up his elbow. It would have been nasty, no doubt, but Moreau also had a responsibility to keep his head up. This is the NHL, after all, a tough league, a violent world.
But if Wilson hadn’t put up his elbow, he also would have missed Moreau. His timing was a bit off, Moreau was a bit past him, so Wilson stuck up that elbow and caught the unsuspecting, fast-moving Moreau right in the jaw with a hard elbow. Moreau, an extremely tough player, left the game and did not return.

It’s not so pretty when an NHL player loses a step, starts looking awkward on the ice, and talks a better game than he plays.
If you talk to the vast majority of Oilers fans, though, this is the stage of his career that Oilers captain Ethan Moreau is at.
In discussions about the team, Moreau is rarely mentioned as someone who is going to have a good season, even at his so-called specialty, the penalty kill. In fact, there’s outright scorn for Moreau from many fans, and especially scorn for the way Oilers broadcaster Kevin Quinn kept referring to Moreau in excited and reverential terms last season, calling him, as if it was one word, “And here’s thecaptainEthanMoreau.”

Moreau Home After Suffering Eye Injury

Edmonton Oilers forward Ethan Moreau is back at home the day after suffering a scary eye injury against the Minnesota Wild on Saturday night.
Moreau was hit in his right eye by the stick of the Wild’s Antti Miettinen late in the third period. After leaving the ice, Moreau was immediately taken to Royal Alexandria Hospital in Edmonton.
While the real extent of the injury is not yet known, surgery was not required on Saturday night. Doctors will continue to monitor the eye through the week to see if that changes.

Dustin Penner’s Prank

Dan Tencer of 630 CHED is in Jasper this week as the Oilers prepare for the start of the season. And it sounds like they’re having some fun out there, too…
The regular season hasn’t even started yet and already Dustin Penner has pulled off what will likely be the most successful prank of the season. Last night, as the Oilers players and staff settled into their rooms at Jasper Park Lodge, Penner was busy getting dressed up in the scary mask from the “Saw” horror movie series. He went from room to room knocking on doors and scaring his teammates when they opened up. Ethan Moreau ended up with a choke hold on him and Kyle Brodziak nearly destroyed his own computer while attempting what Penner called “the flying crane” ninja move. Penner told me “this is just the tip of the iceberg”.

Moreau Still Working On His Game

MacTavish is giving his captain lots of rope in exhibitions, unlike kids who tend to hang themselves as they try to compete against the bigger boys.
“We have to give some guys a little bit of slack, Ethan in particular, because he hasn’t played a lot of hockey over the last two years,” said MacTavish.
“I’m giving him the latitude to work through his game. It’s been a long time between games. The intensity and the physical play are the last thing I think about with Ethan ... your game gets out of sync a little bit and sometimes you look in the wrong places, but he’ll be fine. It’s fine-tuning the systems and positional play with him.”
MacTavish is still auditioning Moreau with Pisani and Penner, as a quasi-scoring, big-bodychecking line, although Pisani, for all his defensive acumen, is still trying to get the hang of taking faceoffs.

Moreau Likes The Look Of The Oilers

Moreau’s foot was broken and he says his heart ached too. “I missed the everyday competition, the camaraderie, being around the guys. Sometimes it’s good to sit back and re-evaluate things. It really teaches you a lesson how much you miss the game and how much you appreciate it,” he said.
Over the summer, he’s seen Jarret Stoll, Matt Greene, Raffi Torres and Joni Pitkanen leave and Erik Cole, Lubomir Visnovsky and Gilbert Brule come in. It’s up to the captain to steer the ship with new mates.
“We lost a lot of quality people,” he said. “A big piece of our dressing room is gone, but we added some high-end talent. Visnovksy is a world-class defenceman who puts up more points than almost anybody in the league. And Erik Cole is a Stanley Cup winner…

Media Speculation: Ethan Moreau Involved in Accident

Vancouver police are investigating a hit-and-run that may have involved the captain of the Edmonton Oilers hockey team.
Media is reporting Ethan Moreau was a passenger in a vehicle involved in a collision that occurred downtown very early on Thursday, Aug. 14.
Const. Jana McGuinness, a spokeswoman for the Vancouver police, wouldn’t confirm the hockey player was in a vehicle that backed into a motorcycle shortly after midnight on the 800-block of Burrard Street.
Update 4:33pm ET: From Sportsnet, confirmation --
Alan Watt, vice-president of communications for the Oilers, confirmed to Sun Media that Moreau was in the vehicle but that he was not the driver.

Moreau Ready For The Season

Moreau knows that fans will be skeptical. With the injury trouble that he and Souray have experienced the last 2 years, it’s human nature to wonder if they’ll be available for 82 games next season. “I’ll be more than 100% come training camp,” Moreau says emphatically. “It’s a pretty simple injury, unfortunately it happened twice. I just broke my leg; there’s no ligament damage. As far as me playing my game and playing tough and physical, there won’t be any ill effects.”
Moreau also knows that it isn’t all about toughness. If the team succeeds in playing a puck possession game, that will take care of a large part of the battle

Moreau Done For The Year

Moreau Plans To Make An Impact

...Moreau will slip into his jersey tonight, the one with the pristine C on the chest, and lead his team into a game against the Minnesota Wild.
He will no longer be captain in name only.
“It will be a special moment in my career. It will be the first time I’ve worn it, and I don’t take it lightly,” Moreau said before the team departed. “I just can’t wait. I’ll play the same way I always have, but I’ll be excited. ... I know I can make an immediate impact.”

Lost Time

It’s been a long, awful stretch for Moreau, who hasn’t played a regular-season game since Oct. 21 of last year. He’s missed 105 games and counting after sitting out the final 75 games of last season with a shoulder injury.
The tough part is that he should have been back from this about six weeks ago, but doctors misdiagnosed the injury, which cost him a couple of weeks, then put him in a walking brace, rather than a cast, until early November, which cost him a few more.
“It shouldn’t have taken that long,” he said yesterday at a Dallas practice rink. “It’s not a complicated injury. I got hit, fractured my tibia. Unfortunately we didn’t find the break, so we wasted a little bit of time.
“That’s probably the hardest thing to deal with, just the wasted time.”

Oilers Expect Key Players Back Soon

The cavalry’s coming.
One of the Edmonton Oilers’ horses, Fernando Pisani, could be back playing within the week, maybe tugging on a jersey when the team is in California to play the Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Kings.
And captain Ethan Moreau may be riding to the rescue around Christmas. He’s been told he still has to wear a cast on his broken left foot for two more weeks.
Finally, some light at the end of the tunnel for the Oilers, who’ve been going without their valuable third-line veterans, who usually eat up 15 to 18 minutes a night.

Captain Moreau In Edmonton

The Edmonton Oilers have named Ethan Moreau as their new captain, making him the 12th player to wear the “C” since the team joined the NHL in 1979.
Oilers coach Craig MacTavish says the decision to name Moreau the Oilers new captain was made after careful consideration. MacTavish says, “Ethan’s leadership at this stage of his career is highly developed. The intensity and physical play that he exhibits every shift is a great example for everyone. It’s his voice in our dressing room that has the most impact and at the end of the day, Ethan was an obvious choice.”
Moreau said, “I’m extremely honoured and consider it a priviledge to be named captain of the Edmonton Oilers. I have a tremendous amount of respect for the organization and will continue to strive towards bringing the Stanley Cup back to Edmonton.”
