Malkin Out

from PittsburghPenguins.com,
Head coach Dan Bylsma announced that forward Evgeni Malkin will miss 2-3 weeks with a shoulder injury. It is not the same injury that kept Malkin out of the lineup during the beginning of the 2006-07 season and the team is being cautious.
“Geno is going to be out of the lineup for a couple of weeks,” Bylsma said. “He strained his shoulder about 10 days or so ago. I don’t know the exact day. It is precautionary for the player. We are worried about the safety of the shoulder. A couple weeks of rest and rehab will get that thing healthy so he can get back onto the ice.

from Dmitry Chesnokov at PuckDaddy,
What do you think about Ovechkin’s comments about him leaving the NHL to play in Sochi (2014 Winter Olympics)? Will you join him?
There is nothing to add to what he said. I completely agree with Alex. I have exactly the same opinion. We even spoke to each other about it on one occasion. That’s why I agree. This is my dream [to play in Sochi]. Especially because this is going to take place in Russia. There is a buzz over there already. And if I am in good form, if I am a candidate for a roster spot, and if I am invited, there is no way I will refuse.
What if the NHL tells you that you can’t go? What if there will be some sanctions?
I would rather pay fines and still go. If there is something serious like a disqualification for a couple of years in the NHL, if there is something like this I will probably still go because I can even leave to Russia to play. It is very difficult to say right now. But I can give you 100% that I will go [to Sochi].

Malkin Wants More
by Paul on 09/16/09 at 08:00 AM ET

from Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette,
Evgeni Malkin wants more. A lot more.
The Penguins’ prolific center thinks about piling up the trophies every time he looks at his hands. It has nothing to do with how soft those big paws are on shots or passes.
He just sees possibilities that make the team’s successful Stanley Cup run last season one to grow on.
“That was last year,” Malkin said this week as training camp got under way. “I want to win one more time, two, three more times. I have 10 fingers on my hands, and I want to win 10 times. Why not?
“I want to win a couple more trophies, a Hart Trophy. We have a good chance to win. Why not? We’re young kids.”

Malkin Thinking One More Win
by Paul on 06/12/09 at 09:25 AM ET

from Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review,
A man of few comments throughout the Stanley Cup Final, Penguins center Evgeni Malkin acknowledged Thursday that one picture would be worth a thousand words.
“I think about it a lot, especially these last (two) weeks,” he said, smiling before finishing the sentence. “It’s my dream. Me and Sid, just like that."…
He has rarely spoken to North American media. Teammates insist he is more intense than they can recall from any point in his career, talking constantly of ways for the Penguins to improve.
“Yeah, I’m trying to concentrate on the games,” Malkin said yesterday. “The Cup is all I want. I will give 120 percent. I will give everything.
“One win. The Cup. After that I will talk. I will do anything. One win first.”

Datsyuk & Malkin Talk
by Paul on 06/10/09 at 11:03 AM ET

from Dmitry Chesnokov at Puck Daddy,
Pavel Datsyuk(notes) of the Wings and Evgeni Malkin(notes) of the Pittsburgh Penguins spoke after the Game 6 victory for the home team about a number of subjects, including what to look for in Game 7, being so close to winning the Stanley Cup and Malkin speaking about both Marian Hossa(notes) and his plans for octopi in Detroit.
First up is Datsyuk:
Q. Did you have a gut feeling before the final that this would be a seventh game series?
DATSYUK: To be honest with you, I didn’t think about it at all. I just want to win. It is clear that the Pittsburgh Penguins are an excellent team. So, I don’t think anyone thought it would be easy.
After your comeback from the foot injury it seems you have some special attention from some Penguins’ players: Like Max Talbot(notes) slashing you on your injured foot; and tonight Matt Cooke(notes) almost having a knee on knee collision with you.
To be honest with you, it is great! It just means they don’t like me for something. On a different hand, this is the playoffs and the game is very aggressive, especially in the finals. But it is all within the rules....
Can you almost feel the Stanley Cup in your hands?
MALKIN: No. But it is a lot closer this year. We have a more even team. And we are playing awesome as a team. And now we have a Game 7. I think Detroit will also be nervous. We have our strengths. We have to play our hockey and not adjust to Detroit’s style.

Malkin Dominating
by Paul on 06/05/09 at 08:58 AM ET

from David Staples of The Cult of Hockey,
Evgeni Malkin, the New M, is like Tom Brady and Randy Moss all at the same time.
One minutes he’s throwing the long bomb, the next minute he’s catching it.
In Thursday’s game, a dominating 4-2 win by the Pittsburgh Penguins over the Detroit Red Wings, Malkin was in the middle of as many excellent scoring chances in both the first and the second periods as the Detroit Red Wings had all game.
Malkin had a goal and an assist for the game, but the damage could have been much worse, as he and fellow dynamo Sidney Crosby started to dominate, just as the sly, talented and seemingly tireless Henrik Zetterberg appeared to start to wear down.
For the fourth game in a row, Pittsburgh had more scoring chances than Detroit, but this time the margin was overwhelming. The Penguins had 28 scoring chances to 15 for the Wings.
When it came to Grade “A” chances, hard shots from the slot, Pittsburgh had 17 while the Red Wings had just four, by my count.

Malkin Knows How To Play Against Detroit
by Paul on 06/04/09 at 08:05 AM ET
Comments (5)
from Damien Cox of the Toronto Star,
He has five points in the final, three on the power play, and is proving to be much more of a handful for the Red Wings in this final than last year’s.
“I feel great now,” Malkin said. “Last year I was a little bit sick. I’m trying to play a little bit hard and physical more.
“I know how to play Detroit and I try to play a little harder.”
With Detroit deploying most of its primary resources to stop Sidney Crosby, Malkin has been able to find some openings.
“I don’t think his body was physically ready for it last year,” teammate Brooks Orpik said. “I think he’s done a really good job of committing himself off the ice, which is paying big dividends for him now.”

From Dmitry Chesnokov at Yahoo!’s Puck Daddy:
Q. Sergei, can you compare tonight’s game with last night’s?
GONCHAR: In my opinion we did not play bad. Look at the statistics in the regular season and the playoffs. What other team managed to outshoot the Red Wings in a game? We did it yesterday and today. We constantly created scoring chances. It is a different matter that we did not convert. But this is Detroit. You also need luck in addition to playing well against them.
What in your opinion is the main reason for the loss? Just no luck? Or you couldn’t cope with the system Detroit was playing?
Not really, you can play against their system and win. The most important is to finish your chances with goals. It’s not enough just to create opportunities. But I will repeat myself, today they had a little bit more luck than us.

NHL Recinds Automatic 1-Game Suspension Against Malkin
by Alanah McGinley on 06/01/09 at 12:02 AM ET
Comments (33)
From Ansar Khan at MLive:
NHL vice president of operations Colin Campbell has rescinded the automatic one-game suspension Pittsburgh star Evgeni Malkin was facing for receiving an instigating penalty with 19 seconds to play in the third period, when he started a fight with Henrik Zetterberg.
From the original NHL press release:
Rule 47.22 states: “A player who is deemed to be the instigator of an altercation in the final five minutes or at any time in overtime shall be suspended for one game, pending a review of the incident. The director of hockey operations will review every such incident and may rescind the suspension based on a number of criteria. The criteria for the review shall include, but not be limited to, the score, previous incidents, etc...”
Following that review, Campbell said: “None of the criteria in this rule applied in this situation. Suspensions are applied under this rule when a team attempts to send a message in the last five minutes by having a player instigate a fight. A suspension could also be applied when a player seeks retribution for a prior incident. Neither was the case here and therefore the one game suspension is rescinded.”
NHL Hockey Operations also determined that Malkin should have been assessed a game misconduct for not having his jersey tied down.

Dealing With Crosby & Malkin
by Paul on 05/27/09 at 11:47 PM ET

from Jacques Demers at USA TODAY,
Former Pittsburgh Penguins coach Michel Therrien and I talk a lot. We have one important thing in common. I named a young Steve Yzerman captain of the Detroit Red Wings in the 1980s. He named a young Sidney Crosby captain of the Penguins.
There are a lot of comparisons between the players. Just look at the unselfish play that Crosby made at the end of Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals when he passed up an opportunity to score into an open net and gave the puck to Craig Adams instead. He’s showing a lot of leadership, as Yzerman did. Both players also have exceptional offensive talent.
Nobody could stop Yzerman and no one can seem to stop Crosby when he’s at his best, which he is at right now. But Yzerman at the time didn’t have an Evgeni Malkin to complement him.

Malkin Causing Problems For The Hurricanes

from Chip Alexander of the News & Observer,
They simply call him “Geno,” which doesn’t have much of a menacing—or marketing—ring to it. A native Russian, he still speaks halting English and shies away from media interviews.
But it was Malkin who was the NHL’s leading scorer this season, winning the Art Ross Trophy. It is Malkin who could be the league’s MVP. It is Malkin, at 22, who is making many wonder what’s next and how high the center’s professional ceiling can be.
More than that, it is Malkin, No. 71, who quickly is becoming the Carolina Hurricanes’ No. 1 headache in the Eastern Conference finals.

Malkin Walks, Doesn’t Talk

from Bruce Arthur of the National Post,
Evgeni Malkin did not exactly duck the media on Tuesday. Instead, the Pittsburgh Penguins star ran, skittering through the locker room of his team’s practice facility with a member of the Pittsburgh public relations team trying to chase him down, shouting his nickname. “Geno!” she yelled, getting a handful of his skin-tight shirt. But it hardly slowed him down, and Malkin gleefully absconded through a door.
“He’ll walk by you every time, guys,” the Penguins employee said cheerfully. “How many times do I have to tell you?”
It was fitting, since Malkin has made only cameo appearances in the first two games of Pittsburgh’s second-round playoff series with the Washington Capitals.

Pens Need A Better Game From Malkin

from Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette,
“I think [my performance] was OK,” Malkin said yesterday, “I felt good. The first game, maybe I was a little bit nervous.
“But next game, [I will] be better. Maybe play a little bit harder, maybe have more hits. Maybe [get] more shots and play aggressive.”
Penguins coach Dan Bylsma, asked pointedly to assess Malkin’s work in the opener, never mentioned Malkin in his response, speaking instead to the importance of getting improved play from throughout the lineup.
“We need to get better in the offensive zone, taking pucks to the net and maintaining possession,” he said. “[Washington] did a good job defensively, being aggressive.
“Pretty much every line needs to get better at that for us to do what we think we can do in this series.”

from Jame Duthie at the Ottawa Citizen via TSN,
“He is overshadowed and I can never understand why,” says Buffalo goalie Ryan Miller, who ranks Malkin among the most dangerous players he has ever faced. “People always seem to just gravitate towards one or two players in a sport. Malkin is like Dwayne Wade this year in the NBA, having an amazing season but everybody just talks about Kobe and LeBron.”
He’s right. Sidney and Ovie have become the NHL’s Kobe and LeBron, at least in terms of popularity and hype.
Ever since they came into the league, “Crosby or Ovechkin?” has been the hockey equivalent of “Ginger or Mary-Anne?” And Either-Or debates don’t usually have a 3rd option (Mrs. Howell?) But you’d better make room for one now.

Suspendable Malkin Hit?

via Empty Netters,
Malkin clearly went after the player’s head. Additionally, there was less than 10 seconds left in the game. If that’s a Flyer delivering a blow, the suspension is almost automatic. Malkin shouldn’t be exempt because he’s a star player. But the NHL has a game on NBC Sunday to worry about so don’t expect Colin Campbell and company to take any action on this.

Ovechkin Or Malkin

Every week, the NHL on TSN panel voices its opinions on the hot topics of the day in the Wednesday Night Hockey Quiz.
Question No. 3: Penguins fans are saying that Geno Malkin is the league MVP. Good evidence in the last game - he got five points, he hit the 100-point mark, he leads it by 10. Who’s your choice? It’s basically coming down to Alex Ovechkin or Malkin.
Pierre McGuire: Ovechkin. The big thing on Ovechkin is that he’s probably scored the best goal of this NHL season against the Montreal Canadiens. He does this virtually every single night. If he’s not part of the Washington Capitals, they’re probably not leading the Southeast division, they’re not pushing for home ice in the playoffs. He’s the most valuable player. Take him off the Capitals, they’re not anywhere near as good.
Keith Jones: For me, it’s Malkin. You think of Mike Green with the Capitals, you think of Sergei Gonchar with the Penguins. Gonchar playing now just 15 games, Malkin over the 100-point mark again. Without a great defenceman on the blueline for much of the season, Malkin has gotten the job done.

from Puck Daddy,
...We caught up with Malkin after Sunday’s game to discuss his growth as a player and a leader; the Pittsburgh Penguins’ playoff hopes; his $1,000 bounty for a victory; the brutality of Flyers fans; his reconciliation and all-star prop comedy with Alex Ovechkin; and, perhaps most interestingly, why he doesn’t understand why teammate Sidney Crosby is labeled as “some kind of ‘mama’s boy.’”
PD: We’re doing this interview in Russian, which must be a nice change from your English-language interviews after games that some fans find amusing. How is your English coming along, and do you feel any pressure to learn it quickly?
MALKIN: To be honest with you, I don’t feel any pressure. And the team is trying to help me out and try not to schedule too many [English language] interviews with me. I myself try to be on the sidelines and try to give interviews without being stressed and just trying to be comfortable. And once again, thanks to the team, they are helping me a lot. And it’s not like there are 100 TV cameras in the locker room after the game surrounding me. I am taking it slow, but there is still visible progress.

from E.J. Hradek of ESPN,
Ovechkin’s unexpected public interaction with Malkin had to catch most puck-watchers by surprise. The two Russian-born stars have been estranged over a personal matter that neither player was too interested in discussing. The feud caught the eye of fans and media when both players went out of their way to hit each other in recent games between the Caps and Pens.
According to one source, Thrashers captain (and fellow Russian star) Ilya Kovalchuk brokered the peace deal between Ovie and Geno. In playing the part of the peacemaker, Kovalchuk might have been looking toward the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. The three snipers figure to be a big part of Team Russia’s gold-medal hopes.

From Slava Malamud, contributing at Tarik El-Bashir’s blog in the Washington Post:
And here is what we could learn about the assorted feuds of the Alexes, the Kid and Malkin. You can believe me when I say that Russian journalists would much rather write about goals and wins, but since this story is apparently a gift that keeps on giving, we deemed appropriate to get further into it.
For one, Alex Ovechkin apparently speaks to Sidney Crosby. Loud and clear at that, to the point where all the teammates of both players and a couple of officials would like to gather around and partake in the exchange. And here is another thing: Alexander Semin also speaks to Crosby. At least, according to Evgeni Malkin, and that is a bit of a surprise, to say the least. And here is the third thing: Ovechkin and Malkin - nope, still not talking to each other, presumably, because both are so busy talking to Crosby.
Sheesh. This story is turning into some sort of odd Russian love triangle/feud, with a stray Canadian tossed into the mix. Read on for quotes after last night’s Pens-Caps game.

From Craig Simpson at CBC’s hockey blog:
There is some serious concern and all kinds of tough questions coming out of Pittsburgh.
This Penguin team is a shell of the one we watched in June, and despite the legitimate excuse of some key injuries to Ryan Whitney and Sergei Gonchar and the departure of Marian Hossa, Ryan Malone and Gary Roberts, they have underachieved in a big way.
Pittsburgh still boasts two of the three top scorers in the NHL, but even Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby have not been themselves. Malkin, the NHL leading scorer has zero goals in his last right games and has only two points in six. Crosby has done more damage with his fists than his stick lately with just two goals in his last 17 games played, and has been held pointless in eight of those 17.
If the players have tuned out their head coach Michel Therrien and are trying to get him fired, they are doing a good job.

Malkin At The Top When Down

from Paul Hunter of the Toronto Star,
But, when it comes to stellar performances in the face of a daunting deficit, the real comeback kid is Pittsburgh’s Evgeni Malkin.
In this, the year of the comeback in the NHL, no one has been better at chipping away at a lead when the chips are down.
Three times the Penguins have bounced back to win games in which they trailed by at least two goals and Malkin had seven points in those three games. While such prowess might seem run-of-the mill for the league’s leading scorer, Malkin’s production is higher in those games when all seems lost (2.33 points per game) than in the rest of his outings (1.58 points per game).
“He’s one of those guys who, when you’re down by a goal, two goals or even four goals, they’re not cashing it in. He has a great will to win,” said Pittsburgh general manager Ray Shero.

from Empty Netters,
We know complaining about Don Cherry being a bigoted rube is like complaining about water being wet. It’s just one of those things that’s never going to change. That’s why we don’t take Cherry seriously and you shouldn’t either.
We actually like Cherry. He’s an entertainer. He’s an act. A very good one at that. But nothing more. How can you take a guy who wears daisy-printed suits seriously?
But this jab against Malkin is pretty pathetic. Labeling him as a puck hog is clearly incorrect.
Update 5:00pm ET: More on Malkin from Darren Eliot at SI,
Malkin seems at ease wherever he plays, either at his natural center ice position, shifting to the wing, or manning the point as he has done this season with injuries to point men Ryan Whitney and, particularly, Sergei Gonchar. Malkin is growing as the powerplay quarterback in Gonchar’s absence. It is yet another sign of his development that was accelerated last year when Crosby went out of the lineup with an ankle injury.
When I asked Crosby if he was surprised by Malkin’s calm demeanor while handling the puck at the blueline, he chuckled, noting that, “Gino is calm in everything he does. There could be ten guys out there and he wouldn’t rush.”

All Star Canadiens Getting a Challenge From Pens Fans

New York (December 2, 2008) – Responding to the daunting challenge issued by the devoted fans of the Montreal Canadiens, the citizens of Pittsburgh and Penguins fans around the world are proving just how passionate they are about their heroes.
Pens forwards Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, the top two scorers in the NHL, have closed the gap considerably on the front-running Montreal threesome of Alexei Kovalev, Saku Koivu and Alex Tanguay in fan balloting to select the starting lineups for the 2009 NHL All-Star Game in Montreal Jan. 25.
As of 7 a.m. ET today, Crosby had received 320,373 votes in XM NHL® All-Star Fan Balloting presented by 2K Sports. With polls still open for another month, that moved Crosby within 65,000 votes of claiming one of the three starting spots up front for the Eastern Conference.

from Seth Rorabaugh of Empty Netters,
A popular question for hockey fans in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s was who was a better player: Wayne Gretzky or Mario Lemieux?
There were viable arguments to either side of that debate. Gretzky had all the records. Lemieux had lesser teammates to work with. Etc.
Either way, it was a simple argument that only had two choices.
Things are a little bit more complex in this day and age. There are three potential choices to that argument.
Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin or Alex Ovechkin.

from Chris Bradford of the Beaver County Times,
Though the two are cordial and respectful of what the other has accomplished, it’s also clear that the two won’t be going out for vodkas soon. When the Washington Capitals took Ovechkin first overall and the Penguins selected Malkin second, the two were inseparable.
Though they are reluctant to say otherwise, it’s apparent that neither is on each other’s Christmas card list. Only Ovechkin and Malkin really know what happened to their friendship but it’s clearly non-existent now. Either that or Russians have a very funny way of showing it.

from Dave Staples at The Cult of Hockey,
Yes, Metallurg Magnitogorsk WAS offering Evgeni Malkin $11 million U.S., but he told them to forget it ... In a wide-ranging interview with the Russian Sovetskii Sport publication, Malkin said he told Metallurg he had a new, valid contract with the penguins, and “I’m not Radulov.”..
Asked about the assistant captain logo he now sports, he smiled: “Coach Therrien came up and said I should be wearing it ... I said I wasn’t sure about my English, and he told me you have to start one day, might as well do it now.”

From Dave Molinari at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette,
The Penguins made their first free-agent signing this morning, agreeing to a three-year deal with forward Pascal Dupuis.
They also have agreed to the structure of a contract extension for center Evgeni Malkin, although the deal has not been finalized. Malkin’s contract will be patterned after that of Sidney Crosby, which means it will run five years and include an annual salary-cap hit of $8.7 million.

Malkin Wants To Stay In Pittsburgh
by Paul on 06/20/08 at 03:12 PM ET

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
However, Malkin’s agent, J.P. Barry of CAA Sports, said he’d had no direct offers from any team in Russia and it wouldn’t matter anyway because Malkin is not interested in going home to play.
“He’s been focused, since Day 1, on doing an extension with the Penguins,” said Barry. “We’ve had discussions with them, since the end of the playoffs, on a framework and expect to have something done with the team early in July.”
They also suggested that Malkin doesn’t want to play anywhere other than Pittsburgh for the foreseeable future — and has no plans to return to Russia,…

Russian League Interested In Malkin
by Paul on 06/20/08 at 07:04 AM ET

from Rick Westhead of the Toronto Star,
Several teams in Russia’s revamped pro hockey league want to repatriate NHL all-star Evgeni Malkin by offering him a contract that would make him hockey’s highest-paid player – by a wide margin.
In a move that would surely send a shock through NHL, whose executives are gathered today in Ottawa for the amateur player draft, the Russian teams are poised to offer the Russian-born Pittsburgh Penguins forward a multi-year contract worth at least $12.5 million (all figures U.S.) tax free per season, said a source familiar with the matter.

Bizarre Dealings
by Paul on 06/19/08 at 08:59 AM ET

from Tony Gallagher of the Vancouver Province,
The farther one goes along with this Collective Bargaining Agreement now in place in the NHL, the more bizarre are the experiences that keep arising....
The first is the case of Evgeni Malkin, who gave the Pens and their fans a lift of hope when he announced—much to his agent J. P. Barry’s chagrin—that he doesn’t need to be paid any more than Sidney Crosby on a five-year deal.
After Barry got through rending his garments at his client’s honesty, he thought about the opportunities staying in Pittsburgh might afford the young Russian in terms of competing for championships and came to the conclusion that as long as they limit the term to five years or the loss of just one year of unrestricted free agency, a deal near Crosby’s $8.7 million per season might be acceptable.

Malkin Could Be Moved

from Joe Starkey of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review,
A month ago, Evgeni Malkin was the toast of the town.
Now, you wonder if he’s just plain toast.
Should star winger Marian Hossa accept the long-term, lucrative contract offer the Penguins have put before him, Malkin’s days in Pittsburgh could be numbered.

Malkin Has Long-Term Plans in Pittsburgh
by Alanah McGinley on 06/13/08 at 12:22 AM ET

From Rob Rossi at the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review,
[Evgeni Malkin] said the prize he really covets—a long-term contract extension with the Penguins—is on its way.
“I’m thinking maybe five or six years,” said Malkin, set to enter the final season of his three-year entry-level deal. “I’m an easy guy to deal with. I’d love to stay in Pittsburgh.”
The NHL’s collective bargaining agreement forbids the Penguins from signing Malkin to an extension until July 1. Malkin said he expects the extension will be signed “soon” after that date.

If the Penguins are planning to rescue themselves from the State of Oblivion, Crosby might find it necessary to get Malkin and Petr Sykora alone in a room and bang their heads together a few times; followed by a simple, declarative sentence: “I WANT YOU GUYS TO PLAY AS HARD AS I AM, AND BROOKS ORPIK IS.”
and more thoughts from Stan Fischler at Game On
Update 8:16pm ET: At ESPN, Scott Burnside takes a more tempered look at Malkin’s performance woes.

Malkin Plans to Throw it Around
by Alanah McGinley on 05/28/08 at 10:22 AM ET

From CBC,
To call Pittsburgh’s top regular-season scorer a non-factor so far in the Stanley Cup final may be generous. Malkin’s penalty minutes (four) easily exceed his number of shots on goal (one), and his minus-3 rating reflects the defensive contribution he made as the Penguins were manhandled by a combined 7-0 in the opening two games in Detroit.
Malkin often found himself bothered by Niklas Kronwall and the other bone rattlers on the Red Wings’ defence corps, something the Russian acknowledged in his halting English before a 3-0 loss in Game 2.
“Detroit have a good defenceman. Kronwall,” Malkin said. “I need to be more physical play. Have to pressure defenceman. Hit. Yeah, hit.”

Answers From Therrien Today

Q&A with Pittsburgh Penguins coach Michel Therrien.
Q. What does Malkin have to do to re-establish himself as a dominant player in this series?
COACH MICHEL THERRIEN: First of all, we still have a lot of confidence in him. He’s a world-class player. He needs to stay focused. He needs to stay on top of his game. He needs to skate. He needs to battle. And if he’s doing those things, good things can happen to him.

If Malkin Is Great

from the Good, The Bad And The Duthie,
If Malkin is sensational, I think Pittsburgh wins the cup. If he is just average, or disappears, as he was sometimes prone to do before he blew up in the second half of this season, Detroit wins.
Sure, it’s a lot more complicated than that. But I’m a simpleton. And simply put, Malkin’s play, more than any other single factor, will decide the Stanley Cup Champion.

From Steve Simmons via the Winnipeg Sun,
Should it happen that the Pittsburgh Penguins win the Stanley Cup, and that’s at least a 50-50 bet, then Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin will be accomplishing something that has never happened in an expanded hockey world.
For Crosby, this is only season No. 3 in the National Hockey League, all of it post-lockout, all of it intended to save the Pittsburgh franchise. For Malkin, this is only his sophomore year: Whatever and whenever this team was supposed to find itself in contention, all this has happened faster than ever before.
Wayne Gretzky was in his sixth NHL season and seventh pro season when the Edmonton Oilers won their first Cup in 1984. Mario Lemieux was in Year 7 in Pittsburgh when the Penguins won their first of two Cups.

Time For Malkin To Step-Up
by Paul on 05/17/08 at 07:23 AM ET
Comments (1)
from Bob Smizik of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette,
Seems hard to believe that about a week ago Malkin was being talked about as possibly the best player in the game. He was mentioned frequently as a leading candidate for the Conn Smythe Trophy, which goes to the MVP of the playoffs. While Sidney Crosby struggled to score, Malkin was a goal-scoring machine.
But look what he has done lately. His only point in the past three games was the second assist on Malone’s score that gave the Penguins a two-goal lead midway through the third period of Game 3. He has managed only seven shots on goal in those three games, compared to 10 in the final game against the New York Rangers. He has been charged with eight giveaways.
There’s no Conn Smythe candidacy in those numbers.

Amazing Malkin

from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,
Every night Gary Roberts watches, and every night he finds something else to be amazed by.
It isn’t just that Evgeni Malkin scores goals. It’s how he scores. And when he scores. And just about everything else in between.
“He is taking it to a whole new level,” the veteran Roberts said. “Both goals tonight came late in shifts. By then, most of us are dead tired. He’s on the ice a minute, a minute and a half into his shift and he finds the strength. I don’t think he’s human like the rest of us.
“And then he makes these plays ... I’ve never seen anything like him before.”

Malkin Doesn’t Like Those Flyers
by Alanah McGinley on 05/08/08 at 09:36 AM ET

From Shelly Anderson at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette,
After he had a goal and three assists in a 4-3 win Feb. 10 that broke a four-game losing streak to the Penguins’ cross-state rivals, Malkin said he didn’t like the Flyers, playing against them or playing in Wachovia Center, where, he said, fans pelt the Penguins’ bench with popcorn.
Despite gaining that insight on the rivalry, he wasn’t quite willing to repeat that with the playoff matchup looming.
“I don’t like anybody,” Malkin, 21, said in what would have been a snappier retort if it hadn’t had to be cycled through interpreter George Birman. “If I like them or not, we have to play them.”
