Malkin Like Fedorov
by Paul on 01/22/12 at 09:06 AM ET

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,
Evgeni Malkin’s dominance absent Sidney Crosby’s presence in Pittsburgh is reminiscent of the way Sergei Fedorov would take command in Detroit whenever Steve Yzerman was sidelined.
Malkin, meanwhile, continues to be the league’s sneakiest dirtiest player, enabled by officials who continue to allow him to go scot-free for plays such as the one midway through the first period of the match at the Garden on Thursday where he low-bridged Brian Boyle to avoid a check and in doing so sent the Ranger up and over.
It was an act distinct from the one that got Brad Marchand suspended for going low on Vancouver’s Sami Salo only by speed, distance and the absence of league discipline.

Malkin Dominant In Win Over Detroit

from Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review,
It was only a preseason game, but Evgeni Malkin’s performance Wednesday night may indicate a huge season awaits the Penguins’ star center.
In his first game since tearing his right ACL in February, Malkin paved the way to a 3-2 win over Detroit in the exhibition opener at Consol Energy Center. Showing bursts of speed that have been evident during training camp, Malkin scored a beautiful goal and set up another in 20 minutes, 51 seconds of ice time.
“He was at a dominant level,” coach Dan Bylsma said.
Malkin forced four turnovers during an inspired first period.
“Even though it was just an exhibition game,” he said, “it was good.”

Led By Crosby, 14 Penguins Players Deliver Season Tickets

Those of you who have read my blogs over the years know that I have always been very complimentary of how the Pittsburgh Penguins treat their fans… at least most of the time anyway.
They have always done a number of things to make the fans feel involved such as having town hall meetings to keep them posted on the rebuild that went on a few years back, generous giveaways such as the popular “Shirts off their Backs” promotion that sees every Penguins’ player give away his game used jersey to a fan during a post-game ceremony following the final home game of the regular season and much more.

Many in the hockey world are still reeling from the events of Wednesday morning that saw a plane crash take the lives of all but one member of the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl KHL team that was en route to the first game of its season in Minsk. Watching the pain and suffering of all involved as been tough for all of us, but no one has felt it worse that the many Russian born NHL players that have intimate ties to many of the teams in the KHL and specifically Lokomotiv Yaroslavl.

Malkin’s Time To Lead The Penguins
by Paul on 09/08/11 at 06:50 AM ET

from Joe Starkey of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review,
Even if Crosby comes back this season, danger lurks. He would rejoin a league that still has such a thing as a “legal head shot,” to quote NHL commissioner Gary Bettman — and there is no predicting how Crosby’s brain will react to the next big hit, no matter what the medical experts say.
The cruel nature of his injury makes Crosby day-to-day for good.
The false hope of Crosby’s return permeated the Penguins’ dressing room during last year’s playoffs and made for a daily distraction until he shut it down for good. That can’t happen again. This team starts training camp in 10 days and opens the regular season Oct. 6 at Vancouver. Bylsma and his staff should be strategizing short- and long-term without penciling Crosby’s name onto the depth chart.
This is Evgeni Malkin’s team for now — and despite injuries and bouts of inconsistency, Malkin has shown he can carry the club. When he’s right, he is a top-five player in the world. A two-time 100-point scorer. He should run the power play from the right half-boards, as he did so expertly during Crosby’s prolonged absence in 2007-08.
The Penguins’ defense and goaltending is second to none. They lack firepower up front, but if Malkin returns to form, they would be a viable Stanley Cup contender without Crosby.

In my last article on left wings, a few of you mentioned the positional dilemmas that we seem to face when drafting forwards. This is a great point, since not only do position eligibilities change from league to league (eg. Yahoo/ESPN/CBS), but also from year to year. As well, we also need to keep our eye on forwards with dual position eligibility.

Shero/Bylsma Videos from this afternoon…

Though I try to avoid posting a lot of the same things that you might have already seen on the Penguins official site, I did receive the embed codes to the videos from today’s pressers from my predecessor, Tony Ferrante, so I figured that I would post them for you all. He was good enough to send them… I will post them!
I already wrote about Shero’s presser and shared pertinent quotes, but there is no harm in seeing the entire interviews… at this point, the most interesting commentary contained there in is likely to be Bylsma’s thoughts on some other injured players like Dustin Jeffrey and recent signee Jason Williams. However, it is worth hearing the optimism that I mentioned in Shero’s voice for yourselves…

I spent the last week enjoying all that the summer has to offer, taking in several different concerts in and around the Pittsburgh area such as Exodus, Slayer, Rob Zombie, Motley Crue, Poison, U2, Kingdom of Sorrow, Megadeth, Godsmack, Disturbed and even managed to give Dave Mustaine a Penguins jersey in the process (but that will be a story for another day).

Ah, the summertime… bikinis, baseball, hot dogs, humidity, high temps, vacations and ABSURD trade rumors. I realize that the probability of an absurd trade rumor making the rounds is much higher during the months between the start of unrestricted free agency and the opening of training camps, but sometimes I have just got to shake my head and tell you that something isn’t going to happen.
The interesting thing about the rumors that have actually prompted me to sit down and write a blog contradicting them is that they seemingly always revolve around Evgeni Malkin.

Malkin Not Ready To Play Just Yet
by Paul on 02/01/11 at 08:07 AM ET

from Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette,
Evgeni Malkin is an NHL scoring champion and playoff MVP.
And for an hour or so during the practice at Consol Energy Center Monday afternoon, he was one of the most gifted fourth-line centers in hockey history.
But Malkin won’t be filling that role—or any other—when the Penguins face the New York Rangers at 7:38 p.m. today at Madison Square Garden, because coach Dan Bylsma has ruled him out of the game.
The reason, Bylsma said, is the lingering effects of a sinus infection Malkin has been battling of late.
“He’s not ready to go,” Bylsma said.

I believe it is entirely possible that Washington’s John Erskine may have had the greatest hockey game in the history of the planet last night.
No, his stat line won’t wow you but this game-winner against Atlanta was just icing on top of a cake that already included layers of an epic scrap with Eric Boulton and the all kinds of awesomeness that is the Erskine ‘stache.
Take in the fight, please:

Former NHLer’s in Europe Part II
by Phil Davies on 10/31/10 at 11:35 AM ET
Comments (4)
This week we will continue to look at former NHL players who are now playing in Europe.
Jaromir Jagr
Avangard Omsk
Jagr is clearly not the offensive force that he was in his heyday with the Pittsburgh Penguins, but he has become quite a mentor to younger KHL players, while recording 14 points in 19 games for sixth place Avangard Omsk. However, Jagr’s most impressive feat this year was leading an undermanned Czech squad to World Championship gold against a heavily favoured Russian squad that featured Ovechkin, Malkin, Datsyuk and Gonchar.
Miroslav Satan
HC Slovan Bratislava
Satan is hoping to land another midseason NHL contract as he did with the Boston Bruins last year. In the meantime, Satan registered eight points during a three game contract with Slovan Bratislava of the Slovak league. Satan can still find the back of the net and may yet have another crack at the NHL.

Radulov Sets New Record
by Phil Davies on 10/17/10 at 12:39 PM ET
Comments (2)
Alexander Radulov of Salavat Yulaev entered the record books recently by scoring the fastest goal in Russian hockey history. Radulov scored six seconds into a match against Yugra, after intercepting a pass and doing a nice spin-o-rama move on goaltender Mikhail Biryukov. Radulov beat the twelve year record of seven seconds, set by Andrei Pychelyakov of Severstal in 1998 and later tied by former NHLer Dmitry Yushkevich of Magnitogorsk in 2003. However, Radulov’s goal is not the fastest goal ever recorded in a professional hockey game as that distinction is held by four players who were able to find the back of the net one second faster than Radulov. They are NHLer’s Doug Smail (1981), Bryan Trottier (1984) and fellow Russian Alexander Mogilny (1991), as well as Slovak 2nd division player; Frantisek Zubek of Presov.

Crosby Not 100%
by Paul on 10/16/10 at 07:28 AM ET

from Rob Rossi of Chipped Ice at the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review,
More clear with each day is that we’re not seeing anywhere near the 100-percent Crosby, who has been bothered by a hip injury since the early days of camp. I’ve never known him to use an injury as an excuse for not playing up to his expectations, and I don’t give him enough credit for that. Also, perhaps my expectations of him and Malkin are too high. He and Malkin will be judged against former scoring champions/MVPs Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr for as long as they play with the Penguins—and neither Crosby nor Malkin may prove the consistent game-takeover players those players were in their primes. (Few were, to be fair.) Still, neither Crosby nor Malkin are in their primes, so I’ll continue to believe each player will one day get near the rarefied levels Penguins fans came to expect from Lemieux and Jagr in the “get on my back, boys” department.

The State of Hockey in Russia
by Phil Davies on 10/05/10 at 12:10 PM ET
Comments (1)
The Russian National Team has taken great strides towards regaining past international hockey glory in the last few years. Spurred on by back-to-back World Championship victories with two straight wins over Team Canada in 2008 and 2009 (including a win on Canada’s home ice in 2008), Russia had seemed to finally regain their duo-superpower status with their longtime Canadian rivals. That is until the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, where the Russians were soundly thumped 7-3 by the home side in their quarterfinal matchup. Perhaps, Team Russia goalie; Ilya Bryzgalov, summed up the debacle best by stating that Team Canada played like “gorillas coming out of a cage.”
On the heels of their defeat in Vancouver, many of Russia’s Olympic core squad vowed to gain a measure of revenge at the 2010 World Championships in Germany three months later. Although Russia defeated a relatively undermanned Canadian squad, their efforts, once again, ended in failure with an upset loss to the Czech Republic in the championship final.

Malkin Thinking Stanley Cup

from Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review,
Two words never got lost in translation for Penguins center Evgeni Malkin: Stanley Cup.
He spoke those words a lot to coach Dan Bylsma in July during their two days together in Moscow. He offered them again Friday when assessing what would qualify as a good season personally.
“Win Stanley Cup,” he said, eyebrows arching, voice rising and teeth flashing through an open-mouthed grin — signs that Malkin is comfortable with the English words he has chosen.

Move Malkin?
by Paul on 05/16/10 at 08:13 AM ET
Comments (59)
from Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review,
There are three steps Shero can take this offseason to get the Penguins back to where they once belonged.
Crosby and Malkin will be more dominant with a young, skilled wing to grow with.
However, given the cap constraints, the only way to land that wing is to move one of them for a package that would upgrade the roster and replenish a system that lacks impact forwards beyond top prospect Eric Tangradi.
Staal’s development as a Selke Trophy candidate for his defensive work and offensive upside—at 21, he has produced three 20-goal seasons as a third-liner—gives the Penguins the option of trading Crosby or Malkin. Staal is a prototype No. 2 center and an emerging dressing-room leader.
The Penguins won’t trade Crosby, who aside from being team captain is the franchise’s face. Malkin, already a scoring champion and playoff MVP at 23, is the guy to shop.
Shero should start making calls to his contemporaries, and his first words should be: “Make me an offer for Malkin.” It must include a top-line wing, a top-pairing defenseman, two roster players and either two top prospects or two first-round picks.
added 9:33am, from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,
Malkin, who has four years left on his contract, is hardly excess baggage, but if Shero were to pick up the phone and start canvassing his lodge-brothers he might get what he sorely needs—two top-six forwards. If he could get two wingers who make about $8 million total that would be less than Malkin’s $8.7-million cap hit, and maybe a team would throw in a stocking stuffer, too. A good draft pick or a top-nine, young-20s forward.

Malkin Plus/Minus Talk
by Paul on 03/13/10 at 08:15 AM ET
Comments (3)
from Kevin Gorman of the Pittsburg Tribune-Review,
With Evgeni Malkin a minus-10 over the past 18 games and a minus-5 for the season — which ranks 629th in the NHL — Bylsma was asked if Malkin’s two-way play has been addressed.
“Sometimes, the statistics can be deceiving as to how a player is playing,” Bylsma said. “I think since the break, he’s come out with a rejuvenated effort in terms of playing on both sides of the puck and playing away from the puck. He’s outstanding with the puck — he’s dynamic with the puck — but sometimes he wants to go get it and have it at all times and keep it at all times.”
Bylsma credited Malkin with improving his play on defense, playing away from the puck and his management of it in the offensive zone. Bylsma said Malkin’s past six games — in which he is minus-4 — “have been probably his best away from the puck and managing the puck all year long.”

Malkin Is No Crosby
by Paul on 01/17/10 at 08:16 AM ET
Comments (7)
from Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review,
Right now, he is to the best player debate what Conan O’Brien is to “The Tonight Show.” Actually, O’Brien’s future with NBC might be more promising than the Penguins’ Stanley Cup hopes if Malkin doesn’t rediscover is galloping greatness.
They’ll be lucky to win a playoff round with this version of Malkin.
How fortunate for Malkin, the Penguins’ most talented player, that he is not their most scrutinized, even though he and captain Sidney Crosby each count $8.7 million against the salary cap.
Crosby was a marvel this past week in Western Canada, expertly handling off-ice responsibilities that Malkin usually begs to ignore (even in the comforts of Pittsburgh) — often using the excuse of a limited understanding of English to avoid PR situations that Crosby has handled since he was, oh, 13.
I know that Malkin understands English well enough to routinely give Crosby a break from granting interviews and shooting commercials to promote his team and sport. He chooses not to do much more than just play hockey, but he can just play hockey because of Crosby’s willingness to do all the off-ice heavy lifting befitting a true superstar.

A Look At Evgeni Malkin
by Paul on 01/15/10 at 10:39 AM ET
Comments (2)
from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
I’ve always felt a propriety interest in the Pittsburgh Penguins’ Evgeni Malkin – and it all stems back to a book project I did during the 2006-07 season with Dave King, a Phoenix Coyotes’ assistant coach, who was behind the bench of three Canadian men’s Olympic hockey teams. That year, King took his vast international resume to Russia, where he became the first Canadian to coach in what was then known as the Super League.
Malkin’s peer, Alex Ovechkin, had left for the NHL already, but he stayed behind to play one more season, which permitted King’s Magnitogorsk team to fashion an extraordinary regular season, much of thanks to the play of his teenage star.
King and I spoke almost every week and almost every week he had another anecdote relating to Malkin’s rapid-fire development. In fact, about the only criticism that King ever levelled towards him was that when things went sour – in the way they inevitably do, even for the most talented and precocious players – Malkin would revert to individual play and go all lone wolf, trying to do everything by himself. Sometimes, it even worked. Mostly it did not.

from PittsburghPenguins.com,
Head coach Dan Bylsma announced that forward Evgeni Malkin will miss 2-3 weeks with a shoulder injury. It is not the same injury that kept Malkin out of the lineup during the beginning of the 2006-07 season and the team is being cautious.
“Geno is going to be out of the lineup for a couple of weeks,” Bylsma said. “He strained his shoulder about 10 days or so ago. I don’t know the exact day. It is precautionary for the player. We are worried about the safety of the shoulder. A couple weeks of rest and rehab will get that thing healthy so he can get back onto the ice.

from Dmitry Chesnokov at PuckDaddy,
What do you think about Ovechkin’s comments about him leaving the NHL to play in Sochi (2014 Winter Olympics)? Will you join him?
There is nothing to add to what he said. I completely agree with Alex. I have exactly the same opinion. We even spoke to each other about it on one occasion. That’s why I agree. This is my dream [to play in Sochi]. Especially because this is going to take place in Russia. There is a buzz over there already. And if I am in good form, if I am a candidate for a roster spot, and if I am invited, there is no way I will refuse.
What if the NHL tells you that you can’t go? What if there will be some sanctions?
I would rather pay fines and still go. If there is something serious like a disqualification for a couple of years in the NHL, if there is something like this I will probably still go because I can even leave to Russia to play. It is very difficult to say right now. But I can give you 100% that I will go [to Sochi].

Malkin Wants More

from Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette,
Evgeni Malkin wants more. A lot more.
The Penguins’ prolific center thinks about piling up the trophies every time he looks at his hands. It has nothing to do with how soft those big paws are on shots or passes.
He just sees possibilities that make the team’s successful Stanley Cup run last season one to grow on.
“That was last year,” Malkin said this week as training camp got under way. “I want to win one more time, two, three more times. I have 10 fingers on my hands, and I want to win 10 times. Why not?
“I want to win a couple more trophies, a Hart Trophy. We have a good chance to win. Why not? We’re young kids.”

Malkin Thinking One More Win

from Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review,
A man of few comments throughout the Stanley Cup Final, Penguins center Evgeni Malkin acknowledged Thursday that one picture would be worth a thousand words.
“I think about it a lot, especially these last (two) weeks,” he said, smiling before finishing the sentence. “It’s my dream. Me and Sid, just like that.”...
He has rarely spoken to North American media. Teammates insist he is more intense than they can recall from any point in his career, talking constantly of ways for the Penguins to improve.
“Yeah, I’m trying to concentrate on the games,” Malkin said yesterday. “The Cup is all I want. I will give 120 percent. I will give everything.
“One win. The Cup. After that I will talk. I will do anything. One win first.”

Datsyuk & Malkin Talk

from Dmitry Chesnokov at Puck Daddy,
Pavel Datsyuk(notes) of the Wings and Evgeni Malkin(notes) of the Pittsburgh Penguins spoke after the Game 6 victory for the home team about a number of subjects, including what to look for in Game 7, being so close to winning the Stanley Cup and Malkin speaking about both Marian Hossa(notes) and his plans for octopi in Detroit.
First up is Datsyuk:
Q. Did you have a gut feeling before the final that this would be a seventh game series?
DATSYUK: To be honest with you, I didn’t think about it at all. I just want to win. It is clear that the Pittsburgh Penguins are an excellent team. So, I don’t think anyone thought it would be easy.
After your comeback from the foot injury it seems you have some special attention from some Penguins’ players: Like Max Talbot(notes) slashing you on your injured foot; and tonight Matt Cooke(notes) almost having a knee on knee collision with you.
To be honest with you, it is great! It just means they don’t like me for something. On a different hand, this is the playoffs and the game is very aggressive, especially in the finals. But it is all within the rules….
Can you almost feel the Stanley Cup in your hands?
MALKIN: No. But it is a lot closer this year. We have a more even team. And we are playing awesome as a team. And now we have a Game 7. I think Detroit will also be nervous. We have our strengths. We have to play our hockey and not adjust to Detroit’s style.

Malkin Dominating
by Paul on 06/05/09 at 07:58 AM ET
Comments (0)
from David Staples of The Cult of Hockey,
Evgeni Malkin, the New M, is like Tom Brady and Randy Moss all at the same time.
One minutes he’s throwing the long bomb, the next minute he’s catching it.
In Thursday’s game, a dominating 4-2 win by the Pittsburgh Penguins over the Detroit Red Wings, Malkin was in the middle of as many excellent scoring chances in both the first and the second periods as the Detroit Red Wings had all game.
Malkin had a goal and an assist for the game, but the damage could have been much worse, as he and fellow dynamo Sidney Crosby started to dominate, just as the sly, talented and seemingly tireless Henrik Zetterberg appeared to start to wear down.
For the fourth game in a row, Pittsburgh had more scoring chances than Detroit, but this time the margin was overwhelming. The Penguins had 28 scoring chances to 15 for the Wings.
When it came to Grade “A” chances, hard shots from the slot, Pittsburgh had 17 while the Red Wings had just four, by my count.

Malkin Knows How To Play Against Detroit

from Damien Cox of the Toronto Star,
He has five points in the final, three on the power play, and is proving to be much more of a handful for the Red Wings in this final than last year’s.
“I feel great now,” Malkin said. “Last year I was a little bit sick. I’m trying to play a little bit hard and physical more.
“I know how to play Detroit and I try to play a little harder.”
With Detroit deploying most of its primary resources to stop Sidney Crosby, Malkin has been able to find some openings.
“I don’t think his body was physically ready for it last year,” teammate Brooks Orpik said. “I think he’s done a really good job of committing himself off the ice, which is paying big dividends for him now.”

Penguins Need More Luck

From Dmitry Chesnokov at Yahoo!‘s Puck Daddy:
Q. Sergei, can you compare tonight’s game with last night’s?
GONCHAR: In my opinion we did not play bad. Look at the statistics in the regular season and the playoffs. What other team managed to outshoot the Red Wings in a game? We did it yesterday and today. We constantly created scoring chances. It is a different matter that we did not convert. But this is Detroit. You also need luck in addition to playing well against them.
What in your opinion is the main reason for the loss? Just no luck? Or you couldn’t cope with the system Detroit was playing?
Not really, you can play against their system and win. The most important is to finish your chances with goals. It’s not enough just to create opportunities. But I will repeat myself, today they had a little bit more luck than us.

NHL Recinds Automatic 1-Game Suspension Against Malkin
by Alanah McGinley on 05/31/09 at 11:02 PM ET

From Ansar Khan at MLive:
NHL vice president of operations Colin Campbell has rescinded the automatic one-game suspension Pittsburgh star Evgeni Malkin was facing for receiving an instigating penalty with 19 seconds to play in the third period, when he started a fight with Henrik Zetterberg.
From the original NHL press release:
Rule 47.22 states: “A player who is deemed to be the instigator of an altercation in the final five minutes or at any time in overtime shall be suspended for one game, pending a review of the incident. The director of hockey operations will review every such incident and may rescind the suspension based on a number of criteria. The criteria for the review shall include, but not be limited to, the score, previous incidents, etc…”
Following that review, Campbell said: “None of the criteria in this rule applied in this situation. Suspensions are applied under this rule when a team attempts to send a message in the last five minutes by having a player instigate a fight. A suspension could also be applied when a player seeks retribution for a prior incident. Neither was the case here and therefore the one game suspension is rescinded.”
NHL Hockey Operations also determined that Malkin should have been assessed a game misconduct for not having his jersey tied down.

Dealing With Crosby & Malkin
by Paul on 05/27/09 at 10:47 PM ET

from Jacques Demers at USA TODAY,
Former Pittsburgh Penguins coach Michel Therrien and I talk a lot. We have one important thing in common. I named a young Steve Yzerman captain of the Detroit Red Wings in the 1980s. He named a young Sidney Crosby captain of the Penguins.
There are a lot of comparisons between the players. Just look at the unselfish play that Crosby made at the end of Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals when he passed up an opportunity to score into an open net and gave the puck to Craig Adams instead. He’s showing a lot of leadership, as Yzerman did. Both players also have exceptional offensive talent.
Nobody could stop Yzerman and no one can seem to stop Crosby when he’s at his best, which he is at right now. But Yzerman at the time didn’t have an Evgeni Malkin to complement him.

Malkin Causing Problems For The Hurricanes

from Chip Alexander of the News & Observer,
They simply call him “Geno,” which doesn’t have much of a menacing—or marketing—ring to it. A native Russian, he still speaks halting English and shies away from media interviews.
But it was Malkin who was the NHL’s leading scorer this season, winning the Art Ross Trophy. It is Malkin who could be the league’s MVP. It is Malkin, at 22, who is making many wonder what’s next and how high the center’s professional ceiling can be.
More than that, it is Malkin, No. 71, who quickly is becoming the Carolina Hurricanes’ No. 1 headache in the Eastern Conference finals.

Malkin Walks, Doesn’t Talk

from Bruce Arthur of the National Post,
Evgeni Malkin did not exactly duck the media on Tuesday. Instead, the Pittsburgh Penguins star ran, skittering through the locker room of his team’s practice facility with a member of the Pittsburgh public relations team trying to chase him down, shouting his nickname. “Geno!” she yelled, getting a handful of his skin-tight shirt. But it hardly slowed him down, and Malkin gleefully absconded through a door.
“He’ll walk by you every time, guys,” the Penguins employee said cheerfully. “How many times do I have to tell you?”
It was fitting, since Malkin has made only cameo appearances in the first two games of Pittsburgh’s second-round playoff series with the Washington Capitals.

Pens Need A Better Game From Malkin
by Paul on 05/04/09 at 08:12 AM ET

from Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette,
“I think [my performance] was OK,” Malkin said yesterday, “I felt good. The first game, maybe I was a little bit nervous.
“But next game, [I will] be better. Maybe play a little bit harder, maybe have more hits. Maybe [get] more shots and play aggressive.”
Penguins coach Dan Bylsma, asked pointedly to assess Malkin’s work in the opener, never mentioned Malkin in his response, speaking instead to the importance of getting improved play from throughout the lineup.
“We need to get better in the offensive zone, taking pucks to the net and maintaining possession,” he said. “[Washington] did a good job defensively, being aggressive.
“Pretty much every line needs to get better at that for us to do what we think we can do in this series.”

from Jame Duthie at the Ottawa Citizen via TSN,
“He is overshadowed and I can never understand why,” says Buffalo goalie Ryan Miller, who ranks Malkin among the most dangerous players he has ever faced. “People always seem to just gravitate towards one or two players in a sport. Malkin is like Dwayne Wade this year in the NBA, having an amazing season but everybody just talks about Kobe and LeBron.”
He’s right. Sidney and Ovie have become the NHL’s Kobe and LeBron, at least in terms of popularity and hype.
Ever since they came into the league, “Crosby or Ovechkin?” has been the hockey equivalent of “Ginger or Mary-Anne?” And Either-Or debates don’t usually have a 3rd option (Mrs. Howell?) But you’d better make room for one now.

Suspendable Malkin Hit?

via Empty Netters,
Malkin clearly went after the player’s head. Additionally, there was less than 10 seconds left in the game. If that’s a Flyer delivering a blow, the suspension is almost automatic. Malkin shouldn’t be exempt because he’s a star player. But the NHL has a game on NBC Sunday to worry about so don’t expect Colin Campbell and company to take any action on this.

Ovechkin Or Malkin
by Paul on 03/19/09 at 07:08 AM ET

Every week, the NHL on TSN panel voices its opinions on the hot topics of the day in the Wednesday Night Hockey Quiz.
Question No. 3: Penguins fans are saying that Geno Malkin is the league MVP. Good evidence in the last game - he got five points, he hit the 100-point mark, he leads it by 10. Who’s your choice? It’s basically coming down to Alex Ovechkin or Malkin.
Pierre McGuire: Ovechkin. The big thing on Ovechkin is that he’s probably scored the best goal of this NHL season against the Montreal Canadiens. He does this virtually every single night. If he’s not part of the Washington Capitals, they’re probably not leading the Southeast division, they’re not pushing for home ice in the playoffs. He’s the most valuable player. Take him off the Capitals, they’re not anywhere near as good.
Keith Jones: For me, it’s Malkin. You think of Mike Green with the Capitals, you think of Sergei Gonchar with the Penguins. Gonchar playing now just 15 games, Malkin over the 100-point mark again. Without a great defenceman on the blueline for much of the season, Malkin has gotten the job done.

Malkin Talking

from Puck Daddy,
...We caught up with Malkin after Sunday’s game to discuss his growth as a player and a leader; the Pittsburgh Penguins’ playoff hopes; his $1,000 bounty for a victory; the brutality of Flyers fans; his reconciliation and all-star prop comedy with Alex Ovechkin; and, perhaps most interestingly, why he doesn’t understand why teammate Sidney Crosby is labeled as “some kind of ‘mama’s boy.’”
PD: We’re doing this interview in Russian, which must be a nice change from your English-language interviews after games that some fans find amusing. How is your English coming along, and do you feel any pressure to learn it quickly?
MALKIN: To be honest with you, I don’t feel any pressure. And the team is trying to help me out and try not to schedule too many [English language] interviews with me. I myself try to be on the sidelines and try to give interviews without being stressed and just trying to be comfortable. And once again, thanks to the team, they are helping me a lot. And it’s not like there are 100 TV cameras in the locker room after the game surrounding me. I am taking it slow, but there is still visible progress.

Yesterday afternoon, Pittsburgh Penguins rookie forward Luca Caputi was a guest on former WCW announcer Mark Madden’s 105.9 FM “The X” radio show (listen to the podcast here). The conversation turned to Penguins star Evgeni Malkin, and Caputi let slip an interesting behind-the-scenes detail about Pittsburgh’s huge rally to beat the Tampa Bay Lightning the other night: That Malkin offered up $1,000 between periods if the Penguins came back to win.

AO & Malkin Together Again

from E.J. Hradek of ESPN,
Ovechkin’s unexpected public interaction with Malkin had to catch most puck-watchers by surprise. The two Russian-born stars have been estranged over a personal matter that neither player was too interested in discussing. The feud caught the eye of fans and media when both players went out of their way to hit each other in recent games between the Caps and Pens.
According to one source, Thrashers captain (and fellow Russian star) Ilya Kovalchuk brokered the peace deal between Ovie and Geno. In playing the part of the peacemaker, Kovalchuk might have been looking toward the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. The three snipers figure to be a big part of Team Russia’s gold-medal hopes.

Glasnost! Perestroika! You see, there’s no animosity between Pittsburgh Penguins star Evegni Malkin and Alexander Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals. They’re like two little Fonzies, those two. Look at those vice-like grips; it’s like they can’t let go.

Washington - Pittsburgh Chatter Continues

From Slava Malamud, contributing at Tarik El-Bashir’s blog in the Washington Post:
And here is what we could learn about the assorted feuds of the Alexes, the Kid and Malkin. You can believe me when I say that Russian journalists would much rather write about goals and wins, but since this story is apparently a gift that keeps on giving, we deemed appropriate to get further into it.
For one, Alex Ovechkin apparently speaks to Sidney Crosby. Loud and clear at that, to the point where all the teammates of both players and a couple of officials would like to gather around and partake in the exchange. And here is another thing: Alexander Semin also speaks to Crosby. At least, according to Evgeni Malkin, and that is a bit of a surprise, to say the least. And here is the third thing: Ovechkin and Malkin - nope, still not talking to each other, presumably, because both are so busy talking to Crosby.
Sheesh. This story is turning into some sort of odd Russian love triangle/feud, with a stray Canadian tossed into the mix. Read on for quotes after last night’s Pens-Caps game.

‘‘We’ll stick up (for Malkin), like you would for any teammate. They’re intense, physical games and as long as that’s the way they stay, that’s safe. But if there’s deliberate intent to hurt someone, you kind of step outside the line a bit, you have to make sure you stick up for your teammate.’‘

From Craig Simpson at CBC’s hockey blog:
There is some serious concern and all kinds of tough questions coming out of Pittsburgh.
This Penguin team is a shell of the one we watched in June, and despite the legitimate excuse of some key injuries to Ryan Whitney and Sergei Gonchar and the departure of Marian Hossa, Ryan Malone and Gary Roberts, they have underachieved in a big way.
Pittsburgh still boasts two of the three top scorers in the NHL, but even Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby have not been themselves. Malkin, the NHL leading scorer has zero goals in his last right games and has only two points in six. Crosby has done more damage with his fists than his stick lately with just two goals in his last 17 games played, and has been held pointless in eight of those 17.
If the players have tuned out their head coach Michel Therrien and are trying to get him fired, they are doing a good job.
