The Stars win their first of the season, but Tim MacMahon points to the bigger story for Dallas:
But the story of the night is obviously rookie Fabian Brunnstrom, who became the third guy in NHL history to get a hat trick in his debut.
Why didn’t the Swedish dude play in the first two games? That’s one of the questions we’ll ask when he head downstairs for postgame duties.

Brunnstrom Taking It A Step At A Time

What the Stars like is the fact that despite all of the attention surrounding him during the recruiting process, Brunnstrom appears humble and enthusiastic.
“You go in there, and he’s lifting weights and doing the work, and that’s very encouraging,” Tippett said. “He wants to be on our team, he really wants to succeed, and he wants to put the work in. You love to see that.”
Brunnstrom said he understands the pressure and simply wants to take this one step at a time. He called the process “an adventure.”

Patience With Fabian

Les Jackson is all about trust and patience, and that strategy will probably be tested to its utmost by Fabian Brunnstrom.
The 23-year-old free agent from Sweden has a ton of potential, but he is a late bloomer and nobody is sure whether or not he can turn that potential into NHL scoring....
Barring a disaster, Brunnstrom will make the Stars out of camp and will take a regular shift with Mike Ribeiro, Brad Richards or Mike Modano. He’s a natural left wing, but he can play right wing, and that should help Dave Tippett find the right place for him. But the bottom line is Jackson will push to keep Brunnstrom in the lineup and also push for him to get important minutes.

Sources tell TSN Fabian Brunnstrom will make his NHL debut next season with the Dallas Stars.

The 23 year old Swedish forward officially made his decision on Thursday with Dallas edging out Montreal, Detroit and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
“In the end there was no wrong decision. All of the organizations involved were extremely professional and respectful in their approach and the opportunity was carefully explained. The Dallas option was simply the best one overall for Fabian and he is very comfortable with his decision,” said Brunnstrom’s agent J.P. Barry.

Ladies and gentlemen, the votes are in and it’s a unanimous decision – this year’s salesman of the year is J.P. Barry. Yes, it’s only May but there is no way anyone can top our man.
That was settled on Thursday when Barry, the Calgary-based agent for Fabian Brunnstrom, announced the Dallas Stars won the bidding war for his client. Barry did such a masterful selling job that at one point, 15 NHL teams were slavering for his services.

The World Juniors make most top prospects household names years before they don an NHL sweater. So the potential of an instant, out-of-nowhere, American Idol-ish star, has fans in a frenzy. Brunnstrom is the most Googled Swede since Tiger’s wife, and he’s inspired endless chatter on NHL thread-sites.
“OMG did you see that move on the video! Nucks plz sign him!”—naslundfan.
“I’m praying for the Leafs to sign him. Sundin-Steen-Brunnstrom would be sick!”—snipecheeseallday.
“Give him 10 mill now and the Cup is ours, baby!”—hockeytown4ever.So their expectation level for the kid is somewhere between Zettterberg (sic) and Jesus. Yes folks, we have our first Internet created hockey legend.
More here. A fun thesis, but I’ll stick by my own previous assessment: the internet didn’t create Brunnstrom; more like some seriously-savvy marketing by player agent J.P. Barry. This North American ‘tour’ of his during the Stanley Cup Playoffs has just been PR gold.

The men skating for the Red Wings, Stars and Canadiens may be focused on the hunt for the Stanley Cup, but the front office staffs of these three clubs are locked in a fierce battle of their own this week.
All three are thought to be among the final contenders for the services of Fabian Brunnstrom, a 23-year-old Swedish free agent who has been described as a cross between Daniel Alfredsson and Tomas Holmstrom.
You know, I won’t question that this Brunnstrom kid is likely very impressive, but this North American Tour thing that his agent J.P. Barry is running has turned out to be one slick marketing plan for his client.
Is there any other way that an undrafted, 23-year old Swedish player with 9 goals last season would ever have gotten this much ink if it weren’t for this well-publicized little journey around the NHL in recent weeks? Impressive.

Detroit management spent much of Thursday meeting with another potentially star Swede, Fabian Brunnstrom. The forward, a free agent and considered one of the best players in the world not in the NHL, will spend the next couple of days hanging around the Wings to see if it might be a good fit for him. The question might seem: are you crazy? What better fit for a young Swede than this team?

Yesterday reports surfaced out of Sweden that Brunnstrom had decided to accept an offer from the Vancouver Canucks, but that decision may be altered in the aftermath of Vancouver firing its general manager, Dave Nonis, last night.
Brunnstrom had whittled his list of choices to Detroit and Vancouver from a list of five or six NHL teams that had made offers.
“We’ve heard he’s reconsidering,” general manager Ken Holland said this morning.

The candidate Babcock was backing was Nicklas Lidstrom.

Well, you can add another can’t-miss player for the mix, but the here’s the kicker - all 30 NHL teams missed out on him a while ago. His name is Fabian Brunnstrom, and he’s one of the most coveted young players not playing in the National Hockey League.

Wings general manager Ken Holland , who is in Binghamton, N.Y., for tonight’s American Hockey League All-Star Game, said Sunday the team has not reached any agreement with Swedish prospect Fabian Brunnstrom.
“We’ve made our pitch,” Holland said. “My understanding is he’s going through his options and trying to make a decision on where he wants to play. The teams have made their offers, so it’s now really in his hands.”
This Brunnstrom is reminding me more and more of Sidd Finch…

Brunnstrom A Lock For Detroit?

I do think the WIngs will be one Swede stronger at some point this spring, and his name is Fabian Brunnstrom. He’s an almost 23-year-old forward who’s become a star in the Swedish Elite League. He went undrafted, but now NHL teams are taking notice, and the Wings are among teams who have made an offer. From what I hear, the club believes it is the front-runner to acquire Brunnstrom.
All NHL clubs are on an even field as far as what entry-level contract they can offer Brunnstrom, so on his part, it’ll just come down to where he wants to go. I hear he’s already made up his mind about coming to Detroit.

The funny thing is, the Maple Leafs would have had Brunnstrom in their organization already if they’d simply listened to the advice of Thommie Bergman, their very capable director of European scouting....
The only proviso was that everyone involved, including Bergman, agreed Brunnstrom’s best development path would be through the Swedish Elite League and the Farjestad program rather than the NHL or the minors.
Leaf management, led by GM John Ferguson and assistant GM Mike Penny, thought otherwise. They were unwilling to sign Brunnstrom unless he was willing to play for the Toronto Marlies of the American League and the Leafs refused to budge.

As many as 20 NHL teams have shown serious interest in the 22-year-old Swedish forward this season. He’s an unrestricted free agent in terms of his NHL rights because he went undrafted. He’s a late bloomer and has really come on in the past 12 months. He has 30 points in 36 games with Farjestads of the Swedish Elite League this season.
“He’s oozing skill, a great playmaker with lots of upside,” one NHL executive told Sportsnet.ca. “He won’t take the NHL by storm right away, but he’ll grow into a quality first- or second-line forward.”
Brunnstrom recently gave his agent, J.P. Barry of CAA Sports, a short list of five teams to begin negotiating with.
