Pisani Battles Back From Ulcerative Colitis

From Fernando Pisani at The Hockey News:
Hockey players often take their health for granted. That all changed for me in 2005 when I started feeling sick.
I knew something was wrong with me, but I was kind of embarrassed to see somebody about it. As time went on and I began to feel worse, I knew I needed to get well and had to see a doctor. I finally did and that’s when I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis.
I was able to continue playing, but last July all the symptoms started coming back, only worse this time. I was going to the bathroom 20-30 times a day, losing a lot of blood and a lot of weight.

from the Edmonton Sun,
Understandably he looked like a kid delighted to be playing his first hockey game.
In a sense Fernando Pisani was.
Only a few months ago the Edmonton Oilers forward was struggling with ulcerative colitis.
He couldn’t keep any food down, struggled to walk up a flight of steps and needed to make constant trips to the bathroom....
“I feel like I’ve come a long way,” Pisani said. “I was really nervous and excited before the game and I was looking forward to getting back on the ice, just being on the bench and on the ice with all the guys. Those are the things that you miss when you’re not playing, being on the ice with the team.”

Oilers Expect Key Players Back Soon

from the Edmonton Journal,
The cavalry’s coming.
One of the Edmonton Oilers’ horses, Fernando Pisani, could be back playing within the week, maybe tugging on a jersey when the team is in California to play the Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Kings.
And captain Ethan Moreau may be riding to the rescue around Christmas. He’s been told he still has to wear a cast on his broken left foot for two more weeks.
Finally, some light at the end of the tunnel for the Oilers, who’ve been going without their valuable third-line veterans, who usually eat up 15 to 18 minutes a night.

from TSN,
Fernando Pisani is planning on playing for the Edmonton Oilers this season.
The 30-year-old skated on Monday with some injured teammates to try and get himself back into game shape. Pisani has been out all season while battling ulcerative colitis.
“Just being out there with the guys is a lot of fun and now it’s time to get back to work and hopefully get out there soon,” said Pisani

New Outlook On Life For Pisani

from Robert Tychkowski of the Edmonton Sun,
Fernando Pisani is a private person who doesn’t like talking about himself when things are going great, so you can imagine what it was like telling a bank of reporters and cameramen about something as personal and painful as his struggle with ulcerative colitis.
About losing 30 pounds and six pints of blood in a matter of weeks. About not being able to climb a flight of stairs without gasping for air. How 15 or 20 trips to the bathroom every day left him weak and dehydrated.
