Headshots Need To Stop

from Scott M. Reid at the OC Register,
As the Ducks and Kings prepare to open the 2007-08 National Hockey League season Saturday in London, coaches, current and former players and doctors who treat them maintain the NHL’s failure to deter headshots and escalation in dangerous play in recent years has placed the league and its players on a potentially catastrophic course.
“Is it going to take a death to make the NHL see the problem?” said Dr. Charles Tator, a professor of neurosurgery at the University of Toronto, who has treated NHL players with concussions.

Tightening The Screws
by Paul on 09/23/07 at 07:18 AM ET

from Damien Cox of the Toronto Star,
Now we head into the third post-lockout season, uncertain what the NHL will deliver other than a novelty outdoors game in Buffalo on Jan. 1 that it seems to believe will somehow sell the sport.
There’s a plethora of young, exciting sharpshooters around the league, but it’s unclear whether the game will be played and officiated in a manner that will allow them to flourish.
With fighting and defence on the rise, it appears more and more that the thrilling 2005-06 season was just a blip, a brief moment in the long history of the sport with the game played as one imagined it could be before they tightened the screws on it again.

They’ve Battled Before

from the News & Observer,
Training camp is all about introductions, as new players join an established bunch. Cam Ward didn’t need any introduction to Michael Leighton when the Carolina Hurricanes’ new goalie arrived in town. At least, not to Leighton’s fists.
The two squared off in one of the more memorable fights in recent memory, a brawl during a 2004 minor-league game that spilled onto the benches and beyond. Now, after a draft-weekend trade that brought Leighton to Carolina from the Montreal Canadiens, they are teammates..

Fighting In The Pre-Season

from Ken Campbell of the Hockey News,
Not only are fighters dropping at an alarming rate, the incidents of pugilism have gone up sharply this pre-season. In 29 games through Sept. 20, there had been 39 fights for an average of 1.34 per game. Compare that to last year’s pre-season, when there were just 92 in 105 games for an average 0.88. In 2005-06, there were 111 fights in 108 games for an average of 0.97 per game.
Of the 29 pre-season games so far, there have only been five where there have been no fights.
According to hockeyfights.com, the Philadelphia Flyers lead the league with nine pre-season fights, including three from Cote, who also leads the league.

Are The Canes Tough Enough
by Paul on 09/19/07 at 06:45 PM ET

from WRAL,
Are the Hurricanes tough enough ? Do they need to add an enforcer type to their roster?
There seems to be a movement back to this among many teams. The Boston Bruins, Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins come to mind as three teams that have addressed the issue and have gone in that direction over the the last few months. When the NHL opened for business after the lockout in 2005, it looked like some of these players would fall by the wayside. Would the warrior who had protected the skilled player for so many years become extinct?

Oilers Will Be A “Tough” Team To Play Against
by Paul on 09/19/07 at 07:01 AM ET

from the Edmonton Sun,
Head coach Craig MacTavish says they’ll go the team toughness route again this year.
“Intimidation is a big part of the game, you have to have some toughness,” he said. “But we feel we have enough. Sheldon Souray is plenty tough, Matt Greene’s tough. Steve Staios will battle and fight when he has to. Zack Stortini, Ethan Moreau, Raffi Torres ... we have enough toughness.
“Do I envision having a team that’s going to be fighting guys like Boogaard every time we play them? Absolutely not. That’s the strength of his game. Why give him the ability to do what he does best? You have to be punishing on the other factions of their team, and we have plenty of guys to do that.”

RBK Jersey Quality is Questioned
by Alanah McGinley on 09/18/07 at 01:37 AM ET

From Tom Gulitti at Fire & Ice,
Enforcer Cam Janssen might have injured his shoulder tonight because of the league’s new Reebok Edge sweaters. His sweater ripped during his two first period fights with Philadelphia’s Jesse Boulerice. That might have helped Boulerice pull Janssen’s jersey over his head in both altercations and win both decisively. Arron Asham also had his sweater tear during his fight with Riley Cote.
“These new jerseys are supposed to make you faster, but what good are they if they tear that easily,” Mike Rupp said.

Fighting Smyth
by Paul on 09/16/07 at 08:00 AM ET

from the Denver Post,
Choosing to fight Smyth, who is playing on the top line with Joe Sakic and Andrew Brunette, appeared inexcusable, like a Broncos defensive lineman trying to beat up quarterback Jay Cutler. It also appeared that Laperriere’s fight with Love was meant to send a message that you don’t mess with high-salary, skilled forwards like Smyth.
Afterward, the players presented a different picture. Turns out that Smyth, who signed a five-year, $31.25 million contract in July, picked the fight with Love, and Laperriere only fought Love to remind Smyth that he will be handling his dirty work.
