Burning Questions

From Eric Duhatschek at the Globe & Mail,
Thirteen burning questions, answers and observations following a wild first week on the NHL free-agent front:
1. The Sundin saga.
Mats Sundin, the erstwhile Leaf, received much criticism for his dithering, which in one way, mirrored Marian Hossa’s decision not to chase every last dollar that’s out there. The two-year, $20 million offered by the Vancouver Canucks will likely disappear by early August, when Sundin finally determines he really, truly does want to play again, but it won’t matter because there’ll be a mini-Mats sweepstakes at that point anyway.

From Habs Inside/Out:
To a suggestion that the NHL might need another lockout to restore salary sanity, Gazette Travel Editor and Canadiens super fan David Walker quips:
“Yes, and this time they should lock out the general managers.”

Finally getting some time to catch a breath, we checked out the KK traffic stats for the last two days:
- page views for July 1—1,472,578
- page views for July 2—1,077,107
A huge thanks to our readers for their visits and comments, to the mainstream media and others who regularly send us tips to ensure we don’t miss anything, and to the many blogs and websites for their referrals.
Some of those sites include: James Mirtle, The Pens Blog, Seth Rorabaugh at Empty Netters, WDFN in Detroit (and numerous other radio stations), Spector’s Hockey, Japers Rink, HF Boards, NHL.com, Lets Go Wings, NHL Live! on the NHL Network (loved that close-up of us on TV yesterday!), Gorilla Crouch… and so on. (This list isn’t comprehensive—there are many others—but our appreciation is.)
Anyway, back to work. Sooner or later someone’s gotta sign the rest of these guys, right?

Acquiring Restricted Free Agents

From Scott Cullen at TSN,
While the unrestricted free agent market garners most of the attention, this summer could finally present the time for NHL general managers to actually put the collective bargaining agreement to work, using offer sheets to acquire restricted free agent talent.
Yes, the Edmonton Oilers took a lot of heat for making such offers last year—falling prey to that all-too-common hockey mishap of not knowing “The Code”—it’s about time NHL general managers played with some competitive fire when assembling their teams; the kind of fire that fans expect from the team on the ice.
Includes a chart clarifying RFA compensation dollar amounts, and a look at potential targets for offer sheets around the league.

Hossa to Test Free Agency

From Rob Rossi at the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review,
Marian Hossa has declined an offer to sign a long-term deal with the Penguins and will test free agency.
General manager Ray Shero said today after the NHL Entry Draft at Scotiabank Place that Hossa, a star right wing acquired Feb. 26, will offer his services to other teams as an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

Cat & Mouse Games with Jagr
by Alanah McGinley on 06/17/08 at 10:21 AM ET

From John Dellapina at The Blueshirts Blog,
Jagr told me again today that he hasn’t heard anything from Rangers GM Glen Sather since they spoke on the day the team broke up for the season. While such a cat-and-mouse act is long-standing standard operating procedure for Sather, it makes little sense in this case.
Not only can Jagr sign with Omsk-Avangard at any time, there seems to be little to be gained by making him sit and wonder whether the Rangers want him back. His personal experience (see: Washington 2000-2004) is that things don’t go well when he’s playing for a team that doesn’t fully believe in him. And every day that goes by without the Rangers reaching out to him has to make him wonder even more.
