JJ’s Three Cheers: 10/27/10

Raise a glass to the top performers of last night’s NHL action. It’s the latest edition of JJ’s Three Cheers:

***Cheers to Calgary’s Brendan Morrison, who potted a pair of goals in a 5-4 shootout decision over Edmonton for the 6-3-0 Flames.  With their play of late, Calgary is doing all they can to make me look bad after my unflattering opinion as to how they’d fare this season. Morrison struck in the first on the power play and added a shorthanded marker in the second period before the Oilers rallied to tie the game at 4-4. Twisting the knife in my back, none other than Alex Tanguay’s shootout goal was the deciding factor, sending the home crowd to the exits happy.

The ‘Stache Gear Is A Success

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,

George Parros is far removed from the runways in Paris, but let’s give the Anaheim Ducks tough guy credit for having the gumption to throw himself into the fashion world.

OK, fashion might be a stretch, but last week the 29-year-old winger launched the ‘Stache Gear apparel line of T-shirts and hats with his personalized mustache as the trademark insignia. The ‘Stache Gear went on sale at the Ducks’ team store this past Friday after Anaheim’s 3-0 win over visiting Chicago, and much to his relief, the items were a hit.

Parros’ biggest fear was showing up at the launch and not selling anything. He put in a lot of hours—and some of his own dime—setting up the charitable clothing line. The time leading up to the launch was nerve-racking.

Now That Is What I Call A Wedding Reception

from George Parros at the Fabulous Forum,

My wife and I made sure to put our own stamp on the weekend event. I decided to have a barbershop quartet perform before the ceremony. I have always loved that stuff—maybe it’s from watching too much “Family Guy.” We decided on having a country band play at the reception, and for a surprise, Tiffany (my wife) hired cigar rollers for all our guests to enjoy. The following day, we went to a local water park because, wedding weekend or not, who doesn’t love water slides?

Oh The Linesman Goes Down

Colton Orr & George Parros battled last night and Orr basically ‘tells’ the linesman, don’t break us up yet.

I was watching the Ducks TV feed of the game and they pointed out the officials didn’t make a big deal of the push from Colton Orr.

Two Ducks Get A Taste Of A Real Battle

from Marcia C. Smith of the OC Register,

An intense explosion rocked the observation bridge where Ducks forwards George Parros and Bobby Ryan stood a week ago among Army soldiers. Startled, their bodies shook. Talking about hockey halted as soon as the battlefield simulation began.

Smoke billowed from between cinderblock buildings in this fictional Iraqi village of Medina Wasl, which was erected as the situational training ground for “The Worst Day” a soldier will see during combat.

No one was safe from this insurgents’ ambush scenario that was staged in the marketplace below. The local vendors, who were dressed in authentic Iraqi garb and who moments earlier had been selling everything from flowers and ladies’ purses to old stereos and appliances outside their stucco storefronts, ran screaming through the street in horror and fear, searching for cover.

They had to step over lifeless bodies soaking in pools of blood. They ducked to dodge live artillery fire. An Iraqi man pulled a woman from a taxi, her arm severed and leaving a trail of blood that stained the asphalt.

Preppy Fighting

from Billy Witz of the LA Times,

When Ducks forward George Parros extended an invitation to Sharks defenseman Douglas Murray to drop their gloves and begin to brawl in Game 3 of their Western Conference playoff series, it did not come on embossed stationary or in the form of poetry.

“I asked, ‘Do you want to do this?’ ” Parros said. “It wasn’t an intellectual conversation.”

Not what one would expect from a couple of Ivy League graduates….

They have been running into each other on rinks since their high school days in the New York City area.

“We’ve been taking runs at each other for so many years,” said Murray, who came to the U.S. from Sweden at age 17 to live with relatives on Long Island for a year. He liked it so much he stayed.

A Look At George Parros

from the NHLPA,

“We’ve kept things really basic,” said Parros, who was drafted 222nd overall in 1999 by the Kings. “Bobby is really creative with the puck and is very reliable. Ryan is the one who can dig and fight the puck.”

And as for Parros?

“I just want to crash the net and create some chances if they are there,” said the native of Randolph, New Jersey. “It’s all about being able to contribute in some way, shape or form.”

Parros admits confidence has played a huge part in his game this season.

“Confidence is such an unknown factor in what it can do for you,” said the winger, who graduated with an Ivy League education, after attending Princeton. “I’m just hoping to build on what we’ve done so far.”

All George Parros

from A.J. Perez of USA TODAY,

Q: We’re one month into the season and you’ve already reached your career high in goals. Did you find your scoring touch in the offseason?

Parros: I don’t know. I’ve been able to get some good shots on net. Some years they go in for you, some years they don’t. I usually don’t get too many shots, but I’ve gotten myself into some good position. I don’t think there’s any way to explain it. They’ve just gone in. Thank God for that and I hope they keep coming.
