Giving Back To The Community

It was an emotional homecoming for former Regent Park resident and current Philadelphia Flyer Glen Metropolit, as he and New Jersey Devil Kevin Weekes dropped by the Wellesley Community Centre to sign autographs and make a special announcement last Friday.
The duo’s visit was part of the National Hockey League Players’ Association’s Goals and Dreams program, in which the NHLPA donates hockey equipment to children and youth in at-risk communities. Last week’s donation saw 110 new sets of equipment donated to help programs in Regent Park, St. James Town and elsewhere in the city.
The gesture was extremely meaningful for Metropolit, who choked up while speaking to the crowd of youngsters assembled from local camps and organizations.

Hockey as an Escape

Glen Metropolit has scored over 100 points in six seasons in the National Hockey League but no amount of success will erase the memories of the gangs, pimps and crackheads of his youth.
Raised in poverty by a single mother and shuffled in and out of foster homes, hockey became an escape for Metropolit and a way out of one of Canada’s most violent and drug-ridden inner city slums.

Staying One Stride Ahead

Life in the Regent Park section of Cabbage Town was without certainty or luxury, especially for Metropolit, who grew up with only pennies in his pocket and little more than the hockey stick and ball he carried in his hands.
“He took that stick and ball with him everywhere,” his mother recalled. “He’d be on the couch, and there were times I’d be, ‘OK, Glen, enough . . . put that stuff down!’ “
Today a key component of the Bruins’ offense, the 33-year-old Metropolit has carved a pro hockey career out of less than ice shavings. He grew up poor, never knew his biological father, spent portions of his early childhood with relatives and in foster homes, and only began to inch up the hockey ladder in his late teens when a neighborhood pal suggested he try out for the Richmond Hill (Ontario) Junior B squad. He made it, on the last cut, and has spent the last 15 or so years skating one stride ahead of the next cut.

The Life Story of Glen Metropolit

But not even Hollywood would need to embellish the life story of Bruins center Glen Metropolit, and the immense disadvantages and obstacles he overcame on his way to being an NHL player. If you think his story would also make a good movie, you’re not alone: The 33-year-old Metropolit has already been approached by filmmakers.
“It’s a firm out here somewhere, and they’re very serious about doing it,” said Metropolit. “I think it may happen, but I told them, ‘You know what? The story’s not done yet. I’m not done yet. Let’s wait ’til the story’s over.’ ”
