New Goal For Aebischer
by Paul on 09/25/07 at 07:57 PM ET

from USA TODAY,
After the burden of playing in the shadow of retired goalie Patrick Roy on the Colorado Avalanche for almost two seasons and then enduring a rough year with the Montreal Canadiens, David Aebischer signed a free agent contract in July with the Coyotes, hoping to jump-start his career all over again.
The Coyotes’ goal: Make the playoffs, says Gretzky. Aebischer’s goal: Consistency in net.
The latter seems more likely than the former, but clean slates bring optimism before the first puck is dropped. “I know we have a lot of young guys,” says Aebischer. “But anything is possible.”

Would The Leafs Waive Raycroft
by Paul on 09/24/07 at 11:29 AM ET

from Adam Proteau of the Hockey News,
The Cloutier demotion makes me wonder why the Toronto Maple Leafs aren’t giving all-but-banished netminder Andrew Raycroft the same treatment.
With second-line center Kyle Wellwood out for a month (at least) thanks to his second sports hernia surgery in nine months, you’d think GM John Ferguson could use Raycroft’s $2 million in salary cap space to help plug the pivot hole.

Goalie Beginnings

frrom Rich Hammond at Inside the Kings,
I saw a comment about how few NHL goalies had thrived when starting at a young age, and it made me think…how did some of the best start out? So I looked at the top 20 NHL goalies, in terms of regular-season victories.
TONY ESPOSITO—After three years at Michigan Tech and one year in the WHL, called up during 1968-69 season and played 13 games for Montreal at age 25. Played 63 games the next season.

Emery Still Needs More Time
by Paul on 09/24/07 at 08:04 AM ET

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,
Ray Emery doesn’t have an answer.
After taking part in his first full practice with the Senators yesterday at Scotiabank Place, Emery told reporters he’s not sure when he’ll be able to play, but doesn’t believe he’s ready yet.
“I’m just working hard at getting back right now. I obviously want to get some games in, but I’ve got to make sure that I’m not going to get hurt when I get in there,” said Emery. “I’m close, but I’m not where I want to be as far as playing a game. It’s kind of frustrating for me right now, but I’ll get in there.”

Leafs Goaltending Still Unproven
by Paul on 09/22/07 at 06:54 AM ET

from Damien Cox of the Toronto Star,
The Leafs believe they are set in goal and that, by having Toskala and Raycroft combine forces, have strengthened themselves considerably.
It’s just that there’s no concrete evidence, really, upon which to base such a belief.
Indeed, when you looked at the goaltending depth chart of the lowly Phoenix Coyotes this week and saw David Aebischer, Alex Auld and Mikael Tellqvist, could you honestly say that group is significantly inferior to that of the Leafs?...
So if the weak Desert Dogs have questions in net to be answered, well, the Leafs are in exactly the same position.
It’s just that the Leaf goaltending questions will be asked much more loudly. Every day. Over and over. Under a white hot light of scrutiny powered by 40 years of Cup-less play.

Huet Settling In As #1 Goalie For Canadiens
by Paul on 09/21/07 at 06:16 PM ET
Comments (0)
from Allan Muir at Sports Illustrated,
Having four NHL-ready goaltenders is a nice problem for the Canadiens, but it doesn’t bode well for the immediate future of Carey Price. For the second year in a row, Price, the team’s top prospect, has been the best player—not the best goalie, the best player—in camp, but that won’t be enough to spare him a ticket to Hamilton.
Cristobal Huet has been anointed as Montreal’s starter, and reasonably so, given what he’s proven in this league over the past two seasons. He’s further reinforced his claim on the job with a spotless preseason mark and clearly is the best short-term option.

Cloutier On Waivers
by Paul on 09/21/07 at 12:43 PM ET

via TSN,
TSN has learned that the Los Angeles Kings have placed goaltender Dan Cloutier on waivers Friday.
added 3:41pm, from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
Don’t read too much into the Los Angeles Kings’ decision put goaltender Dan Cloutier on waivers today, other than he’ll almost certainly start the season in the minors this season. Considering the NHL’s goalie glut (and the two years left on Cloutier’s contract at $3.1 million per season), there is virtually no chance that anyone would put in a claim for his rights at that price, at this time of year.

Fernandez Hopes To Play 65-70 Games
by Paul on 09/21/07 at 08:44 AM ET
Comments (0)
from the Boston Herald,
“It’s easier to play a lot of games than a few,” Fernandez said. “It’s a little tougher to get prepared mentally for one (game) every five or one every three. Once you get on a roll, you want to keep going. It’s easier to feel out the team, too, and have the team knowing exactly what to do.”
Ultimately, it will depend on the two goaltenders whether their roles sort themselves out comfortably - or whether a good, old-fashioned goalie controversy develops.
Fernandez hopes it is not the latter.

They’ve Battled Before

from the News & Observer,
Training camp is all about introductions, as new players join an established bunch. Cam Ward didn’t need any introduction to Michael Leighton when the Carolina Hurricanes’ new goalie arrived in town. At least, not to Leighton’s fists.
The two squared off in one of the more memorable fights in recent memory, a brawl during a 2004 minor-league game that spilled onto the benches and beyond. Now, after a draft-weekend trade that brought Leighton to Carolina from the Montreal Canadiens, they are teammates..

Toskala’s Bad Night
by Alanah McGinley on 09/21/07 at 12:31 AM ET
Comments (0)
From David Shoalts at the Globe & Mail,
You have to go back to Ed Belfour in 2002 to find a Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender who had a worse debut than Vesa Toskala.
Eddie the Eagle coughed up a goal on the first shot of the Blue-and-White intrasquad game, which drew some boos from the fans at Copps Coliseum in Hamilton. A few nights later, in his first real game, Belfour — the replacement for the sainted Curtis Joseph — did it again. Belfour gave up a goal on the first shot by the hated Ottawa Senators in the Leafs’ first exhibition game, then gave up two more before leaving partway through what turned out to be a 7-1 drubbing by the Senators.
Toskala, who managed to survive his Blue-White debut without too much embarrassment last Sunday, was channelling Belfour last night against the Phoenix Coyotes in his preseason debut.

Cloutier Hopes To Put An End To Catcalls
by Paul on 09/20/07 at 02:34 PM ET
Comments (0)
from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
“There’s nothing I can do,” said Cloutier, of the catcalls that have punctuated most of his stay with the Kings. “I can’t control what they do. I can’t start to worry about what people are yelling or thinking of my play or what I’m doing. At the end of it, it’s going to make me better when I work my way out of it. I’ve been in that situation before, my first couple of years in Vancouver, and then I had a couple of successful seasons and it went away, so …
“In order to get it away, you need to put up some numbers and get some wins.”

Goalie Competition In Atlanta
by Paul on 09/19/07 at 07:44 PM ET
Comments (0)
from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution,
The goalie competition shouldn’t come as a huge surprise. In crucial games down the stretch last season against the Rangers, Hurricanes and Maple Leafs, Hartley turned to the veteran Hedberg, a departure from the first half of the season.
Who could forget the goalie rotation in the playoffs? Lehtonen started in goal for Games 1 and 3 against the Rangers, while Hedberg played in Games 2 and 4. It was 50-50, and despite a long summer, it doesn’t look like much has changed.
“I will not put numbers out there because there are no numbers,” Hartley said. “Their performances will dictate their playing time, and I think this is a very healthy situation.”

Martin Brodeur Talks to the Media
by Alanah McGinley on 09/19/07 at 06:55 PM ET
Comments (0)
From the CP via CBC,
There are few with better qualifications than Brodeur to evaluate a coaching performance and the future Hall of Famer says he likes what he’s seen from Brent Sutter during the first week of training camp.
“I think Brent definitely took charge right from Day 1 in the way he wants our team to play,” Brodeur saidWednesday on a conference call. “I think just how strong he is as far as the way he talks, how confident he is in himself reminds me a lot of Pat Burns or Jacques Lemaire.
“He’s not a guy who’s going to let the players dictate too much what’s going on.”

Backup Fight In San Jose
by Paul on 09/18/07 at 05:47 AM ET

from the Mercury News,
Dimitri Patzold and Thomas Greiss were standing side by side outside the Sharks locker room, talking about their friendly competition for the backup goalie position. Both put the emphasis on the “friendly” part of their battle.
“We’re not fighting,” Patzold said, smiling. “It’s not like boxing.”
Greiss agreed. “We’re buddies.”
They even often go out to dinner together. “But,” Greiss added, “we split the bill.”...
Deciding which one will open the year as Evgeni Nabokov’s No. 2 is the biggest question facing the Sharks.

Brian Rolston is No Dinosaur
by Alanah McGinley on 09/18/07 at 01:27 AM ET

From Michael Russo at the Star Tribune,
In the real world, Brian Rolston is a young man at age 34. In the hockey world, he’s a dinosaur.
“But I feel young, which is all that matters. If I was on the Red Wings, I’d be really young,” a laughing Rolston joked.Plus, if you’ve paid attention to his first two years in Minnesota (or Sunday’s scrimmage in White Bear Lake), you realize Rolston, despite a few gray hairs, isn’t some breaking-down, old veteran.
(Gotta love a Red Wings joke at the end of the day…)

Who Should Backup Lundqvist
by Paul on 09/17/07 at 09:34 PM ET
Comments (0)
fro Stan Fischler of MSG Network,
My equation goes like this.
Pencil Lundqvist in for 66 games and allow the remaining 16 for Stevie.
Should, Valiquette fail, Glen Sather has an option or three: 1) Curtis Joseph; 2. Robert Esche; 3. Make a deal for Scott Clemmensen.
* CONCLUSION: Valiquette will do the job, and not because he’s my friend. I like Montoya, too, but more than anything, Al needs experience more than my friendship.

No Matter What, Khabibulin Must Play Better
by Paul on 09/17/07 at 06:01 PM ET

from the Chicago Daily Herald,
Maybe the Blackhawks will score more goals on the power play.
Maybe the pieces will fall into place on defense.
But for the Hawks to make the playoffs for the first time since 2002, it’s likely going to come down to whether they get consistently good goaltending from Nikolai Khabibulin.
Now halfway through his four-year, $27 million contract, the richest in team history, Khabibulin hasn’t lived up to expectations - though in his defense there hasn’t been a good team in front of him for those two seasons.

Hockey Thoughts
by Paul on 09/16/07 at 07:16 AM ET
Comments (0)
from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,
• The Ottawa Senators have quietly expressed some interest in Curtis Joseph as a backup goaltender should they be able to find a home for Martin Gerber and his $3.7-million US contract.
• Word around is that the new tough NHL was ready to give Mark Bell a 30-game suspension had he not shown such remorse and personal growth to the league. Doubt Ferguson, who said he did his due diligence on Bell, was aware of that when he tied up $2 million in summer cap money trading for him.
• A waste of money: Whichever NHL team ends up signing Peter Forsberg. He has little left to offer.
