Bryzgalov At The Top Of His Game

from John Kreiser of NHL.com,
Bryzgalov has won five of his six starts this season; he allowed just one goal in the loss. Overall, he’s surrendered seven goals in six games—only three on 73 shots while going 3-0-0 last week—and already owns shutouts at Pittsburgh and San Jose, where he won 1-0 in a shootout last Monday.
Through the season’s first 2 1/2 weeks, Bryzgalov is off to the best start of his career, with a 1.14 goals-against average and a .953 save percentage—both tops among regular goaltenders. He’s also the only netminder with more than one shutout.

Bryzgalov Trying To Get His Game Back
by Paul on 12/02/08 at 07:26 AM ET

from Jim Gintonio of Ice Chips at the Arizona Republic,
Ilya Bryzgalov says he is frustrated because he has been letting down his teammates.
The Coyotes goaltender, who helped inspire a playoff bid a season ago, has lost his last six starts, and Saturday night allowed two goals on the first two shots he faced. He was pulled from the game by coach Wayne Gretzky about five minutes into the contest against the San Jose Sharks and replaced by Mikael Tellqvist.
“You just work harder, and it’s gonna get better,” Bryzgalov said. “’I’m not mad, but I’m frustrated because I was brutal. I was terrible, and I have to pick up my game, and I’ve got to be better for the guys because they deserve much better goaltending from me than I did in the last game … Two shots, two goals is just horrific.”

Bryzgalov Makes Coyotes “Impressively Good”
by Alanah McGinley on 01/31/08 at 06:28 PM ET

From Kevin Allen at USA Today,
At the start of this season, the general impression of the Coyotes was that they were still a patchwork team, a mixture of seemingly mismatched veterans and raw youngsters held together with crack filler and coach Wayne Gretzky’s good name.
Since Bryzgalov was plucked from the Anaheim Ducks on waivers, the Coyotes look like a cohesive group of skilled players. The Coyotes haven’t just been good since Bryzgalov arrived, they have been impressively good. The arrival of Bryzgalov has simply allowed us to see the real Coyotes.

“I think I found a home,” Bryzgalov said after stopping 30 shots in the Coyotes’ 3-1 victory over the Calgary Flames on Tuesday. “I feel here it’s my best year in the NHL.
“I feel trust. I believe in the guys. The guys believe in me. I think we have a great future if we continue working hard and believe in ourselves."…
Bryzgalov has started 22 of 24 games for his new team, posting a 13-8-1 record with a 2.15 goals-against average and .930 save percentage.

Right Head, Wrong Body

via Ice Chips at the Arizona Republic,
When goalie Ilya Bryzgalov opened up the Christmas card the Coyotes are sending out this season, he saw his smiling face.
He immediately realized that the leg pads were not his—and then he noticed that it wasn’t his body either.
Since he was not on the team at the time the photo was taken, his face was superimposed over the face of David Aebischer, who is now a goaltender in Europe.
Bryzgalov, taken aback a little at first, joked that he’d have to take somebody to court.

Bryzgalov Has Moved On
by Alanah McGinley on 11/27/07 at 04:46 PM ET

From Don McGowan at CanWest News,
The 27-year-old Russian, who had played his entire NHL_career with the Ducks, was touched when the Anaheim crowd applauded him as his career highlights were displayed on the Honda Center video screen.
“The crowd stood up and gave me cheering,” said Bryzgalov, who was named Tuesday as the NHL’s No. 2 star of the week ending Nov. 25. “This was a great moment. I started a bit of crying because I don’t expect 17,000 people to stand up and start cheering. It was a great moment.”
That’s where the sentimentality ended. Bryzgalov stopped 23 shots and two more in overtime as the Coyotes beat the defending Stanley Cup champions 4-3.
“We are all professionals,” Bryzgalov said. “We came to (Anaheim) to win this game. Right now, I play for the Coyotes, so no friends on the ice. We have to beat this team. We need the points. No sharing.”

Report- Bryzgalov On Waivers
by Paul on 11/16/07 at 11:01 AM ET

from TSN,
Sources say when the National Hockey League’s waiver transactions are sent out at Noon et on Friday, the Anaheim Ducks will make netminder Ilya Bryzgalov available.
added 11:18am, from the OC Register,
“We’re making this move, first and foremost, to give Ilya Bryzgalov a chance to play,” Ducks general manager Brian Burke said. “He’s a good guy who’s played well for us, but we’ve committed to the other goaltender."…
“I’ve been unable to move Ilya in a trade,” Burke said. “I’ve laid it out for his agent (Don Meehan), and told him we would take this next step. We’ll see where it goes.”
added 11:59am, via the CP,
“What I promised Bryz is that I would find him a place to play,” Burke told The Canadian Press on Friday. “Bryz is a great kid and a loyal soldier. He’s won three playoff rounds for us and he deserves to play somewhere. But I was unable to move him.
“The single, biggest obstacle was that he’s unrestricted at the end of the year. I wasn’t offered anything of value for him. But I promised him, `If I can’t get something of value for you, we’ll put you on waivers."’
added 12:16pm, from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
Evgeni Nabokov and Miikka Kiprsuoff for every game this year, an indication that - salary-cap permitting - they might be in the market for an established back-up, rather than trust the youngsters that they’re carrying on their rosters at the moment.
added 12:43pm, more from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
One more possible destination for Ilya Bryzgalov, the goaltender put on waivers by the Anaheim Ducks this morning: The Pittsburgh Penguins, who’ve gotten decent work from back-up Dany Sabourin so far this year, plus some up-and-down play from starter Marc-Andre Fleury.
