Franzen Out With Sprained MCL

Wings forward Johan Franzen is expected to miss three-to-four weeks with a Grade 2 sprain to his right medial collateral ligament, general manager Ken Holland said Sunday. Holland said either Matt Ellis or Aaron Downey will replace Franzen in the lineup. No one will be re-called from Grand Rapids.

Chicago coach Denis Savard said that Martin Havlat, who is out of tonight’s game against the Red Wings with an injured shoulder, isn’t skating, isn’t lifting weights. His only workout right now is the bicycle. Havlat’s status won’t be determined for another week.
I have also heard he is getting a 2nd opinion on his shoulder injury, and yes, it is the same shoulder he injured last season.

Havlat Hurt

Then Martin Havlat’s name came up and things soured.
Because when the Hawks’ go-to guy skated off the ice, bent over from the waist in obvious agony late in the third period after being sandwiched by a pair of Minnesota players in front of the Wild net, it suddenly didn’t matter that they had played so well in dropping a 1-0 decision in the season opener.
What mattered was that after the game Havlat’s right arm was in a sling and his right shoulder had already been X-rayed with results to be announced today.

The Blue Jackets could start the season without as many as three of their top veteran players.
The club announced Tuesday that defenceman Adam Foote, left winger Fredrik Modin and centre Michael Peca would be put on injured reserve. The Blue Jackets open their season on Friday night at home against the Stanley Cup champion Anaheim Ducks.

The training room inside the Lightning locker room resembled a corner coffee house during the preseason - it’s where everyone seemed to assemble.
And it wasn’t all just for social hour.
Tampa Bay’s media relations staff found itself dealing with daily injury reports as much as any other request since training camp opened Sept. 13. It got to be so epidemic-like that by the end of the second exhibition game - and on more than one occasion since - Lightning coach John Tortorella informed his players not to discuss anything related to injuries with members of the media.

Canucks/Oilers: Coaches Disagree About Hit

It wasn’t the Vancouver Canucks 5-4 pre-season victory over the Edmonton Oilers that will be remembered, but rather a scary third period hit.
And perhaps the coaches reaction to it.
The game itself was overshadowed by a wince-inducing incident five minutes into the third as Canuck Rick Rypien slammed Oiler defenceman Mathieu Roy into the boards behind the Edmonton net. Roy was briefly knocked unconscious and taken away on a stretcher, but does have movement in his extremities. Rypien was assessed a five minute major for charging.

Colaiacovo’s MRI Results Not Good

Don’t expect healing defenceman Carlo Colaiacovo to be in the lineup for the Maple Leafs’ final two exhibition games against the Detroit Red Wings. Barring a last minute change of heart, the Leafs will keep Colaiacovo on the shelf in order to allow his surgically repaired knee to strengthen.
The decision casts even more doubt concerning Colaiacovo’s availability for the season opener against the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday.
And from Sportsnet.ca news alerts: “Carlo Colaiacovo had an MRI on his knee. The results were negative.”

As long as there are large, angry and well-paid men flying around at crushing speeds, there will be stupid acts, scary collisions and scrambled cerebellum. You could throw a lifetime ban at Downie and someone, soon, would be there to wear the villain’s mask. Marty McSorley begat Donald Brashear. Donald Brashear begat Chris Simon. Curly begat Moe.
And at that point, there will be another body lying motionless on the ice, Cuckoo over Cocoa Puffs, and the rafters will ring once again with the experts’ call to arms.

Chicago Dealing With Injuries

Martin Havlat, their leading scorer last season, felt pain in his groin in the first period of Tuesday’s exhibition game against the Florida Panthers and skated off the ice. He didn’t return in that game and didn’t take the ice when the Hawks resumed training camp Wednesday in Bensenville.
‘‘He’s day-to-day,’’ Savard said. ‘‘I’d like to have him play Sunday in the last exhibition game [at Minnesota]. I’d like the whole team to be available then.’‘
That won’t likely happen. Rookie center Jonathan Toews, who broke an index finger in the second preseason game Sept. 19, remains doubtful for the Oct. 4 opener at Minnesota, and Tuomo Ruutu, also listed as day-to-day, is nursing a sore knee.

Iginla pointed out Downie’s hit went too far seeing as he could have made a highlight-reel check without jumping into McAmmond.
“If you don’t leave your feet there, he still gets a big hit. But a lot of us felt it was charging,” Iginla said. “As players, we’re responsible to not put ourselves in that (vulnerable) position, but it happens. You hope there won’t be the full impact, but you can understand and respect when it’s within the rules.”

Hits To The Head Will Continue

Moreover, as long as such hits stay in the game, there will be inevitable retaliation and brawls that followed, and you’ll have more of the bizarre scenes like Tuesday when a group of Ottawa players inadvertently trampled the unconscious McAmmond in their rush to exact some form of frontier justice.
The NHL could have taken a hard line on such hits in the summer months, but chose not to. The players’ union sure didn’t demand it, and too many hockey people decreed that the risk of taking body contact out of the game by outlawing hits to the head area was too significant.
Instead, the league has asked its officials to more carefully assess each incident with an emphasis on several key areas:

Flyers Feel The Pain

Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren announced on Wednesday that four of his players were hurt in the contest.
Forwards Joffrey Lupul and Scottie Upshall both suffered left wrist injuries.
“Lupul sustained a left wrist injury and we will know more once he is examined by a specialist tomorrow,” said Holmgren.
“Upshall sustained a fractured left wrist, which will require surgery. He will have the surgery tomorrow (Thursday) and will be out of action for four to six weeks.”

Downie Suspended

The NHL has suspended Flyers rookie Steve Downie following a vicious hit on Senators forward Dean McAmmond last night.
Downie was handed a match penalty for attempt to injure. He is now indefinitely suspended by the NHL, pending a review of the hit by the league. Downie was the victim of a clean hit from Christoph Schubert before he immediately got up and sought revenge on McAmmond in the Flyers zone.

“There’s no place in the game for that stuff,” a seething McGrattan said after the game. “That was a dirty hit and he’s a dirty player. He’s known for that and he’ll get what’s coming to him next time we play him, for sure.

McAmmond Suffers Concussion

Ottawa Senators forward Dean McAmmond left the pre-season game against the Philadelphia Flyers on a stretcher in the second period after a vicious hit to the head by Flyers forward Steve Downie.
McAmmond had just passed the puck and was skating behind the Flyers net when Downie leveled him with a shoulder to the head. Downie, who was hit into the boards earlier in the shift by Christoph Schubert was given a match penalty - which means he is suspended indefinitely pending a review.
McAmmond has been diagnosed with a concussion, but he is moving his extremities and has been sent to a hospital for further examination.

Dan Boyle Out 4-6 Weeks

Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Dan Boyle’s severed tendons in his wrist area were surgically repaired Sunday and he’s projected to be out of the lineup four to six weeks. Boyle was injured in a freak accident after Saturday’s loss to Washington when his skate fell off its hook and sliced his wrist.
“The doctors who did the surgery today said it was a cut with surgical precision,” said Tampa Bay general manager Jay Feaster.
According to Feaster, Boyle told him that he put his skates on the hook, as he always does, and was talking to teammate Doug Janik when it came crashing down. Feaster said members of the media heard the lid of Boyle’s cubicle slam shut, and they theorize that the vibration knocked the skate off the hook.

As the Ducks and Kings prepare to open the 2007-08 National Hockey League season Saturday in London, coaches, current and former players and doctors who treat them maintain the NHL’s failure to deter headshots and escalation in dangerous play in recent years has placed the league and its players on a potentially catastrophic course.
“Is it going to take a death to make the NHL see the problem?” said Dr. Charles Tator, a professor of neurosurgery at the University of Toronto, who has treated NHL players with concussions.

Tampa’s Dan Boyle Injured in Freak Accident

Tampa Bay Lightning defenceman Dan Boyle will undergo surgery on Sunday following a freak accident at the end of Saturday’s 2-1 pre-season loss to the Washington Capitals.
Boyle was injured in the Lightning locker room when distracted while hanging up his skates. A skate slipped off of the hook and hit him in his left wrist, cutting a tendon.
He was to have surgery on Sunday and will be out of action for several weeks.

Injuries Piling Up For Devils

Kevin Weekes was supposed to make it easier for the Devils to rest Martin Brodeur this season.
But the Devils backup goaltender’s status is uncertain now after sustaining a probable concussion in a collision caused by Rangers agitator Sean Avery in the first period of Friday night’s 4-3 preseason loss to the Blueshirts at Madison Square Garden.
Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello insisted that Weekes would be OK.
“He just hit his head,” Lamoriello said. “He’s fine.

More Groin Problems For Kyle Wellwood

Surgery might be a realistic option for the young forward, who already underwent a sports hernia operation earlier this year.
Because tests revealed yesterday that Wellwood might have a potentially significant problem in the same area again, expect the Leafs to take every precaution in their quest to discover whether another operation is in the cards for Wellwood, who has experienced similar symptoms to those that caused him to miss almost half of the 2006-07 season.

Boogaard Knocked Out by Practice Puck

Derek Boogaard is listed as day to day after taking a puck to the head during Friday morning’s practice at United Center. It opened a gash that required about 20 stitches and left a wound not disimilar to the one Boris Karloff wore in “Frankenstein.”
Asked what hurts worse, a fist or a puck, Boogaard didn’t have to think.
“They both hurt,” he said.
Ask a stupid question, get an honest answer.

Who Is Liable

In a case that could send shock waves through the sporting world, the Illinois Supreme Court will decide if two suburban hockey players, their coaches and league should be held liable for a hit from behind that seriously injured a player in 2003.
Matthew Jacobson, representing the hockey league, said the case could have a “chilling effect” on organized sports, as people would withdraw from coaching and officiating for fear of lawsuits.

Bouchard Making His Own Breaks

Joel Bouchard lay in a Dallas hospital seven years ago with his mother at his side and doctors working to stave off an infection that nearly killed him.
Some details remain sketchy, Bouchard said, but while fighting off a 105.1-degree temperature he distinctly recalled feeling angry.
Not at fate. Not at God. Not even at the physician who misdiagnosed the spinal meningitis days earlier.
“I was mad at myself,” said Bouchard, a 33-year-old hockey journeyman. “I didn’t feel like I was where I wanted to be in life—personally or professionally. I felt like I had become complacent and underachieving and I told myself, ‘If I get out of here, I’m going to do something about it.”

Keep Numminen In Your Thoughts

Twelve hours before he was to check in at the Cleveland Clinic for open-heart surgery, Teppo Numminen was quite afraid.
“There’s fear, that’s for sure,” the Buffalo Sabres defenseman said Wednesday from his Cleveland hotel room. He was to report to the internationally renowned cardiac hospital at 5 this morning to have a valve repaired….
The operation isn’t being done so that he can keep playing hockey. The 39-year-old Finn admitted his condition could be fatal if not addressed quickly.
“Whether I played again or not, the odds turn against you at one point, and I guess they would have turned soon,” Numminen said. “They can’t say if it’s going to be two months or two years, but something happens and then you’re in trouble. Then it’s too late.”
Don Baizley, Numminen’s agent and friend of 20 years, said, “This has been pretty traumatic. It is open-heart surgery. It’s serious business.”
update 6:28pm, from the AP via TSN,
“Teppo Numminen’s surgery was a success and there were no complications,” Sabres doctor William Hartrich said after speaking to the doctor who performed the surgery at The Cleveland Clinic. “Teppo is resting comfortably and will remain in the hospital for the next several days.”

Afinogenov Suffered Head Injury In Round 1

Maxim Afinogenov is a terrible liar. The Buffalo Sabres winger was asked about the secret injury he suffered last spring in the playoffs.
“What do you mean in the playoffs?” Afinogenov replied with the awkward indignation of a nervous child standing next to a broken vase. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Unbeknownst to the devious Russian, his coach already had told the tale….
“Max, while warming up playing soccer in the playoffs, flipped over backwards and hit his head on the concrete before Game Three in Long Island,” Ruff said, “and I don’t think he was right for a little while after that.”
Afinogenov bonked his head early in the first round, and, in Ruff’s opinion, the injury hampered the speedster’s play well into the second round.

The Dreaded Groin Injury Pops Up

The Canucks’ plans have taken a shot to the groin.
Five players have now been sidelined with sore groins. It’s an epidemic of injuries among the veterans that coach Alain Vigneault implied Tuesday could have been avoided under the old rules governing camp.
“There is no one who is sore who was at the prospects camp,“he said. “The prospects had seven full days of practice before we got into games. They had more time to prepare for game-like situations.
“Because of the CBA [collective barganing agreement] our hands are tied. Before [the current CBA] it was five to seven practices before you played an intrasquad game. Now, it’s three [for the veterans] and you’re right into it.”

Surgery A Possibility For Jannsen

Add Cam Janssen’s name to the list of Devils who might need surgery.
The 23-year-old enforcer dislocated his right shoulder for the second time in less than a year during Monday’s 3-2 preseason loss to Philadelphia in Trenton. Janssen said Tuesday that his shoulder popped out of the socket while he was throwing punches during both of his first-period fights with Philadelphia’s Jesse Boulerice….
Janssen underwent an MRI on Tuesday and said he will find out “in the next couple of days” whether he will require surgery to fix the shoulder, which never healed fully after he dislocated it in a fight with Anaheim’s George Parros on Nov. 24. He missed 12 games last season because of it. Surgery would likely keep him out for at least two months this time.

Bertuzzi Feels Great

I feel great, young and healthy,” said Bertuzzi, having had five days of consecutive organized workouts under his belt before getting started against the Kings Saturday.
“It was tough during my time with Detroit, I was really only at about 50 per cent, all beat up and sore during those games. It wasn’t so much my back but everything else was all smashed up—my tail bone was sore, I was a mess.
“Looking back on it, maybe I would have been better off not playing at all last year, but the summer was good and really, the opportunity was too good to pass up, playing with those guys. And we were really close to winning. That series (with the Ducks in the conference final) could have gone either way, at least we felt that way.
“But now to come to the team that just won the Cup, it’s pretty exciting.”

Ducks’ Schneider Out with Broken Ankle Bone

New Ducks defenseman Mathieu Schneider will be out at least four weeks after breaking a bone in the left ankle during his first preseason game with the Stanley Cup champions.
An MRI taken Sunday revealed that Schneider sustained a non-displaced fracture of the ankle Saturday night in Anaheim’s 3-2 victory over Los Angeles.
The 38-year-old Schneider, beginning his 20th NHL season, signed a two-year, $11.25-million deal with Anaheim. The Ducks brought him aboard this summer as insurance in case captain Scott Niedermayer decides to retire.

Schneider Hurts Ankle - MRI Scheduled

Veteran defenseman Mathieu Schneider, signed as a free agent July 1 as insurance against the possible retirement of captain Scott Niedermayer, left the game midway through the second period because of an ankle injury. Schneider is scheduled to undergo an MRI today.
“I really don’t know what to tell you,” Schneider said. “It didn’t feel like much on the ice, but it stiffened up on me. My skate just kind of stuck on the ice.”

Kasparaitis On The Comeback Trail

Last March, Kasparaitis hit what he called rock bottom. At midseason, he had been banished to the Rangers’ top farm team, the Hartford WolfPack. He had arrived for training camp out of shape after off-season operations and was replaced on the Rangers’ roster by younger players. A 14-year N.H.L. defenseman, Kasparaitis was also going through a painful divorce and said he felt as if he were losing everything.
After a practice in Hartford, he had what he now describes as a panic attack. It alarmed team doctors enough that he was rushed by ambulance to a hospital, where doctors found nothing physically wrong.
“It was emotional, the divorce and injuries and I don’t know, I was just tired from all the pressure in life,” he said. “Then I had the panic attack in Hartford after the practice.”
