from A.J. Perez of USA TODAY,
Q: Florida is currently at the bottom of the Southeast Division. Is there any reason for concern?
Martin: “I don’t think so. When you look at our team, there was a lot of enthusiasm and passion early in the season. We have to get back to playing that way.”
Q: The league has tweaked some of the rules this season, including preventing TV timeouts following an icing and placing every face-off after a penalty in the offending team’s zone. What’s your favorite?
Martin: “The one I like the most is the face-off in the offensive zone on a power play. We’re always looking to add more offense to the game. I think that’s a really good rule change.”

Bouwmeester Options

From George Richards at On Frozen Pond,
Only a few people—Jay Bouwmeester, his agent and perhaps JM the GM—know whether Florida’s No. 4 wants to continue his relationship with the Panthers much longer.
Jay has already decided to take the Panthers to arbitration, which means the thoughts he would sign an offer sheet with another team is over. For now, it’s the Panthers or no one for Jay. But there are a few options.

“I don’t know at this point,’’ JM said when asked about bringing in some help come July 1. “Look at the people that we have. In order to get people we want, we would have to trade. It always depends. It’s not like last year where I felt we needed speed and character. That’s why we went free agency route and signed three players. Part of last year’s strategy was, we didn’t think we had too many people ready to step up. This year we do.’’

Jokinen Wants Out
by Alanah McGinley on 06/18/08 at 11:17 AM ET

From George Richards at On Frozen Pond in the Miami Herald,
Big news in Pantherland is that TSN is reporting that Olli Jokinen has “indicated” that he would like to be traded. If this is true, it’s a complete reversal from things I have heard from Camp Jokinen. If it’s true (and I don’t really doubt the validity of the report), I think Olli figured he was gone anyway, might as well make it look like he had some control over things.
It’s the old “you’re fired,” “you can’t fire me, I quit” scenario.

Panthers Talk Jokinen

from On Frozen Pond,
For those who asked, both JM and DeBoer were asked if anything changed with Olli Jokinen’s situation. These are paraphrases…
JM: “I don’t think anything has changed. We don’t have many untouchables on our roster. If we see a chance to improve our team, we will.’’
DeB: “Those are decisions that are best left up to Jacques. My plan is to come here in September and go to training camp with whatever team I’m given.’’

No Rush to Trade Jokinen
by Alanah McGinley on 06/10/08 at 12:50 AM ET

From George Richards of On Frozen Pond at the Miami Herald,
That said, I do think the Panthers and Jokinen will probably part ways in the coming weeks. I don’t think Olli and [Jacques Martin] like each other very much, and if JM was still the coach, Olli would probably have found himself somewhere else.
But know this: JM is not going to trade Olli away out of spite, is not going to settle on a deal just to make the deal. Certain other GMs of this franchise may have made up their mind to trade a fella, then made sure that was done.
JM is not that kind of a GM. Jacques Martin is patient to a fault, and is not going to be rushed into making a major deal like this without doing due diligence.

From Brian Biggane at the Palm Beach Post,
Chicago Assistant General Manager Rick Dudley, who served as Panthers GM from 2002-04, said the rules changes adopted after the lockout have made it easier for young players to succeed in the NHL.
“They don’t have to learn how to deal with the clutching and grabbing, the things wily older players developed over the course of time,” Dudley said. “Today’s game is more about speed and skill as opposed to that.”
Dudley is familiar with the group of youngsters in the Florida system and feels they might also put up significant numbers if given the chance.
“Would I be surprised if Matthias and Frolik played significant roles this year in Florida?” he asked. “I would not. We almost made the playoffs with an incredibly young group. Look at what Pittsburgh did with young guys like (Sidney) Crosby, (Evgeni) Malkin and (Marc-Andre) Fleury. Had Pittsburgh run into a clutch-and-grab team they may have had more problems.”

From Brian Biggane at the Palm Beach Post,
Panthers General Manager Jacques Martin said today that he has received permission to speak with former Toronto coach Paul Maurice about the vacant Florida coaching job.
Martin, speaking by phone just before the NHL general managers meetings in Detroit, said the permission came from interim Toronto GM Cliff Fletcher about two weeks ago, when Fletcher called to inquire about the services of Joe Nieuwendyk.

Coaching Candidates for the Panthers
by Alanah McGinley on 05/21/08 at 07:50 PM ET

From Brian Biggane at the Palm Beach Post,
There could be a good reason the Panthers have been so patient in selecting a new head coach: One of their leading candidates is still working.
Pittsburgh Penguins assistant coach Andre Savard, who has been an NHL head coach and general manager and is a close friend of Panthers GM Jacques Martin, has emerged as a top candidate for the Florida vacancy, according to several league sources.
Savard was also rumored earlier this month in a report from Bruce Garrioch (previously cited here on KK). Other names in the mix include former Panthers coach Doug MacLean, current NYR assistant Perry Pearn, Pat Quinn, Pat Burns, Joel Quenneville and AHL Rochester coach Randy Cunneyworth.

Martin Returning

from the Miami Herald,
Jacques Martin told the South Florida media Tuesday afternoon he would return to the Florida Panthers as its general manager.
Martin spoke publicly for the first time since owner Alan Cohen revealed that Martin would not be serving as Panthers coach in 2008-09. Martin had been the Panthers’ coach the past three seasons and had served as both general manager and coach for the past two.
‘’My intentions are to remain as general manager of the Panthers,’’ he said. ``It’s important to let you know that today. I’m excited to continue my work with the organization.’’

No Word On Martin

from the Palm Beach Post,
As another day ticked by Monday without a decision from Jacques Martin about his future, some NHL sources believe Martin is buying time while investigating the possibility of finding a coaching job somewhere outside Florida.
Majority Owner Alan Cohen gave Martin the nebulous deadline of sometime this week to accept his offer to stay with the Panthers as general manager, but Justin Copertino, the team’s communications manager, said there was no firm deadline.
“It’s not even 10 days since the last game of the season,” Copertino said. “I think Alan is willing to give Jacques however much time he needs.”

Is Jacques Martin The Right Man To Pick A Coach
by Paul on 04/12/08 at 06:42 AM ET
Comments (0)
from Ethan Skolnick of the Sun-Sentinel,
Yet it is reasonable to wonder whether Martin, who didn’t work out as the last coach, is the ideal guy to pick the next one.
Will he recognize that a still-young team could benefit from a young, energetic voice? A communicator? Someone with a style and philosophy quite unlike his own? And if he does hire such a person, who works so differently, how will they work together? Will they co-exist? Clash? Will Cohen regret the creation of another unconventional and potentially uncomfortable structure?
We’ve seen this show before, after all.
So Panthers fans have just cause for concern whenever Cohen makes a move, even if he seems to have just cause to make it.
If Martin stays on as GM, I wonder if Pat Quinn would be considered for the coaching job.

Report- Martin Returning To Florida (Updated)
by Paul on 04/10/08 at 09:45 PM ET

via Bob McKenzie of TSN,
Amid rampant speculation in the media and around the NHL that Panthers General Manager and head coach Jacques Martin could be fired, sources say Florida owner Alan Cohen has already confirmed to Martin during a postseason meeting that Martin will back with the club next season. What remains to be seen is whether Martin will remain in the dual capacity of General Manager-head coach.
Update 2:13am April 11: From George Richards at the Miami Herald,
Jacques Martin will not return as coach of the Florida Panthers next season, although it appears he will continue in his role as general manager of the team, The Miami Herald has learned.
On Thursday night, team owner Alan Cohen told a group of season ticket-holders meeting at BankAtlantic Center that Florida would not have a dual coach/general manager setup, as it has for the past two seasons.
When reached outside the arena, Cohen confirmed those remarks and added that he and Martin have spoken and determined the roles needed to be separate.
‘’More than anything, we needed a change as coach,’’ Cohen said. ``Jacques has done a good job as GM. That’s the bottom line.’’

Who Goes

from the Florida Panthers Blog at the Sun-Sentinel,
It has become quite clear in recent days that Jacques Martin and Olli Jokinen can’t co-exist beyond this season. One of them will be gone this summer, so now owner Alan Cohen has a tough decision to make.
--- He can’t have Martin step down has coach and remain as GM because the GM picks his coach and he’d likely pick someone with a personality similar to his, one that players both in Ottawa and Florida contend doesn’t relate well to them.
--- He either has to keep Martin in both positions or in neither.

Still Going At It

via the Miami Herald,
Questions about Jokinen’s leadership have surfaced, with coach and general manager Jacques Martin deflecting comment about that Thursday, saying it was something best addressed after the season.
‘’I look back over the past 19 games and he hasn’t scored even strength,’’ Martin said.
“He’s a minus player right now. I think he has to be better and he knows that. If you want to win, your best players have to be your best players. We go a lot of nights with the Stephen Weiss line as the top line.”

The Panthers Room

from On Frozen Pond,
JM got testy today when asked about the reported division in the room, telling us to name our sources. That, of course, is not going to happen. And it can’t happen. But none of this is new. JM hasn’t been a good communicator and I don’t think he thinks he needs to be.
JM is an old-school guy in the thought he feels these guys should be able to motivate themselves from within, that they make enough money they should play with pride and be up for every game. Yet this is the real world. That always isn’t the case.
Has Jacques lost the room? I don’t think he has.

Panthers Must Make The Playoffs, Or Else…
by Paul on 11/20/07 at 08:53 PM ET

from the Palm Beach Post,
Majority owner Alan Cohen denies it, but a well-placed NHL source said Tuesday that general manager and coach Jacques Martin and captain Olli Jokinen must get the Panthers to the playoffs this season or one or both are likely to be gone.
“Jokinen has got to pick up his productivity and leadership and get this team to the playoffs,” said the source, who deals with the Panthers on a regular basis. “And with an excellent draft next year, Jacques needs a playoff berth after giving Nashville his first- and second-round picks in the (Tomas) Vokoun trade.” Cohen was quick to issue denials when Jokinen trade rumors surfaced last weekend, insisting he would never trade the ninth-year center, and Tuesday he was just as quick to underscore his faith in Martin.
