Of the 42 players to score 500 goals, only 15 managed the first 500 with the same team: Jean Béliveau, Mike Bossy, Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Hull, Gordie Howe, Guy Lafleur, Mario Lemieux, Stan Mikita, Mike Modano, Gilbert Perreault, Maurice Richard, Joe Sakic, Bryan Trottier and Steve Yzerman.
It’s funny how nobody ever asked Béliveau at the end of his career, or Lemieux or Richard or Sakic or Yzerman, why they didn’t want to move on to greener pastures when the fortunes of their current teams fell on hard times. It must be a sign of these mercenary times – that the motives of someone who demonstrates loyalty and commitment to an organization are questioned, not applauded. Strange how priorities can be misplaced.

Iginla Addresses The Trade Talk
by Paul on 11/29/11 at 08:13 PM ET

from Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun,
“Its all part of it. It’s not new,” Iginla shrugged. “You’re asked the same questions at different times, but the focus is on the fact we have 60 games left. It’s a lot of hockey.
“There’s going to be a lot of changes over the next 60 games in the standings, and we believe we’re going to be moving up.
“Nobody in here has given up. We still believe we can be a good club and make the playoffs. That’s where the focus is.
“It’s just the way it works, the way media is, as far as Internet and how easy it is to just run with a story,” he continued. “It’s not always accurate, that’s for sure, but that’s fine. I’m not blaming anybody, but there are things you read that aren’t accurate and you just move on.
“The best way to stop a story is to win games and climb in the standings.”

What Will Iginla Do?
by Paul on 11/28/11 at 11:51 AM ET

from Lyle Richardson at The Hockey News,
Team president Ken King and GM Jay Feaster deny they’ll shop Iginla, so if he’s to be dealt, he’ll have to make the trade request himself. But if Iginla doesn’t want a blemish on his good name, it’ll take King and Feaster to ask him to accept a trade.
When trade rumors linking Iginla to the L.A. Kings and Pittsburgh Penguins popped up last season, he claimed he didn’t want to be traded, adding he would only consider waiving his clause if management asked him – and then only if the return would provide immediate help for the Flames.
Neither side wants to be seen as the bad guy and as long as each waits for the other to make the first move, nothing will happen until his contract expires.
That could change later in the season, but even if Iginla agrees to be dealt, finding a Cup contender won’t be easy because of his $7-million cap hit for this season and next.
As talented and respected as Iginla is, none of the current contenders – the Philadelphia Flyers, Washington Capitals, L.A. Kings, Pittsburgh Penguins, San Jose Sharks, Vancouver Canucks and the defending champion Boston Bruins – has the cap space to comfortably absorb his salary.
more and I know of one Cup contender that does have cap room…

The Latest Iginla Talk
by Paul on 11/27/11 at 04:50 AM ET

from Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun,
Jarome Iginla would never admit it, but he’s thinking about the possibility of life without the Calgary Flames.
So say several sources close to the longtime Flames captain who believe the 34-year-old winger is quietly struggling with the realization his dreams of winning a Stanley Cup will not play out in Calgary.
from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,
Tom Gaglardi, 43, a Vancouver-based businessman who finally realized his dream of owning an NHL team when he officially took over the Dallas Stars last week, could get aggressive in trying to get the club back on the hockey map.
While Calgary Flames captain Jarome Iginla would have to agree to waive his no-movement clause, don’t be surprised if the Stars show interest in trying to pry the 34-year-old winger back to Dallas, the team that drafted him in 1995.

Concerns Over Iginla’s Minus-10
by Paul on 11/16/11 at 08:46 PM ET
Comments (0)
from Steve MacFarlane of the Calgary Sun,
His next closest competition is another handful back, with current linemates Mikael Backlund and Alex Tanguay and defenceman Jay Bouwmeester all at minus-5 for the year.
While Iginla’s five goals have him in a tie for the team lead, he’s nowhere near the top of the NHL charts in that statistical category, one in which he can usually be found.
But in a five-way tie for 685th prior to Wednesday night’s action, Iginla’s double-digit minus rating had him in a deadlock for the league’s eighth worst in that area of five-on-five action.
And while the merits of plus/minus can be debated at length in terms of what the number represents, there’s reason to be concerned when it’s your top offensive players being outscored on a regular basis.

Hopefully Iginla’s Back Issue Is Not A Sign Of Things To Come
by Paul on 09/19/11 at 09:39 PM ET
Comments (0)
from Steve MacFarlane of the Calgary Sun,
It’s unlikely his minor bout with back spasms that has kept him off the ice for two straight days — and possibly a couple more to come — is a signal the 34-year-old is breaking down physically.
Rumour has it he claimed the title of Fittest Flame once again this year.
But there’s a reason the group waiting for word from Iginla on his current status multiplied.
One day, his time in the NHL will come to a close. And it could be something that starts as a simple as back spasm that triggers it.
“I’m not that concerned. But I mean, I can understand — backs are a sensitive thing,” Iginla said when reminded these types of injuries have, in the past, turned from day-to-day to week-to-week issues. “When you get a stiff back — everyone’s had one — putting socks on are hard on certain days.
“Personally, I think it’s gonna be fine. I feel way better (Monday) than I did (Sunday), which I take as a positive.
“I don’t think it will be a lingering issue. I hope not.”

Upcoming Milestones
by Alanah McGinley on 08/30/11 at 12:12 PM ET
Comments (1)
From John Kreiser at NHL.com:
Here’s a look at some players who have a good chance to reach individual milestones during the 2011-12 season:
500 goals: Jarome Iginla, Calgary Flames
Calgary’s captain and all-time scoring leader passed the 1,000-point mark late last season. He starts the new season with 484 goals after finishing third in the NHL with 43 in 2010-11—his best season since getting 50 in 2007-08. He was the top scorer among active players until Jaromir Jagr (646) signed with Philadelphia after three seasons in Russia.
With 10 consecutive seasons of 30 or more goals, there would appear to be little doubt that Iginla will get the 16 he needs to become the 42nd player in NHL history to reach the 500-goal mark. [...]
1,000 assists: Jaromir Jagr, Philadelphia Flyers
Reaching 1,000 assists is a lot harder than scoring 500 goals…

Iginla a Hit in Kandahar
by Alanah McGinley on 05/31/11 at 02:40 PM ET

We posted about this last night, but today CalgaryFlames.com provides more details of Jarome Iginla’s trip (along with Jayna Hefford and Marie-Philip Poulin, both members of Canada’s gold medal winning women’s hockey team of 2010) to Afghanistan this week:
The entourage arrived at 10:00 a.m. Kandahar time and stepped off the plane into 38 C temperatures. At that point Iginla became the first active National Hockey League player to pay a visit to troops in the field. The first stop was the outdoor ball hockey rink. It was here that [TSN’s Gord] Miller realized what he had known for a long time—the Flames captain is a special human being.
“He stood on that concrete floor for two hours talking and signing autographs and having his picture taken. Then he played ball hockey for 15 minutes in that heat,” said Miller.
The group attended various functions including a tour of the Task Force Kandahar Headquarters, a commemorative wreath laying and a social barbecue with troops. At the later, many of the troops who had taken photos earlier in the day had printed them for Iginla to sign.
“I know people in Calgary know what kind of person Jarome is. But he was incredible. It underlies the character of the guy,” said Miller. “I can honestly say I have never seen anyone that patient, that kind, with everyone. He asked some great questions. He was unbelievable. He had time for everyone. He just made everyone feel good.”

Iginla in Afghanistan

From Calgary Flames.com:
Calgary Flames captain Jarome Iginla was returning home Monday from a surprise, whirlwind visit to Canadian troops in Afghanistan with Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
While on the visit, Iginla played some ball hockey, attended a barbecue with troops and signed autographs.
“It was an honor and a privilege to be asked by the Prime Minister to be part of this trip to come and meet and spend time with our troops,” Iginla told calgaryflames.com.
“I met lots of guys from Alberta as well. There are lots of hockey fans and it was enjoyable to talk with all of them. Everyone has been watching the playoffs and it was cool to see the hockey rivalries among them.
“It was also very interesting as I toured headquarters and much of the base. It was truly an honor to spend time with our service men and women far from home.”

Don’t Move Iginla Now
by Paul on 04/09/11 at 07:52 PM ET
Comments (1)
from Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun,
Four months ago the Trade Iggy Movement (TIM) based its eloquent argument on a belief the 33-year-old captain “sucked.”
Extensions of that rationale suggested he was “too old,” “past his prime” and was no longer a leader.
Such notions have since been quieted after the local icon carried the team on his back for an exciting turnaround that saw him finish amongst NHL scoring leaders as one of the game’s most dominant forces once again.
The leaders of TIM have now been forced to split into two groups, voicing radically different approaches as to why the future Hall of Famer needs to go.
The first revolves around the belief the Flames need a major overhaul and the best way to do it is by jettisoning its most prized asset with an eye on bringing in talented young prospects.
The second - and increasingly popular mantra - implies the trade needs to be made for Iginla.

Iginla A True Impact Player
by Paul on 03/07/11 at 10:46 PM ET

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
As for Iginla, he now finds himself in a select group that includes Jaromir Jagr, Mike Gartner, Phil Esposito, Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Hull, Marcel Dionne, Mike Bossy, Jari Kurri and Darryl Sittler – all current or future Hall Of Famers. Scoring 30 goals every year speaks to Iginla’s consistency and his ability to produce results, night in and night out, with various linemates, through a host of coaching and regime changes for a decade and counting.
There is no better way of measuring his resilience – or the impact he’s had on a franchise that, for the moment anyway, is exciting a bit of passion in a market that looked hopelessly forlorn not so long ago.

Dancing Iggy

from Steve MacFarlane of the Calgary Sun,
During Monday’s 3-1 victory over the visiting Nashville Predators, just after Flames winger Jarome Iginla scored the winning goal, the Saddledome’s Enmax Energy Board featured a few seconds of a cartoon-like captain dancing gleefully to some funky music.
The original groove on the Internet featured Olli Jokinen, but the Finn wasn’t real eager to have his dancing image plastered on the big screen when he scored.
Iginla’s peer-pressure lobbying tactic backfired.

Why Not Let Iginla Fight?
by Paul on 11/22/10 at 05:10 PM ET
Comments (17)
via Vicki Hall of Flames Insider,
Jarome Iginla still can’t figure out why the linesmen refused to let him fight it out last night with Justin Abdelkader.
In a sight familiar to Calgary Flames fans, the captain doffed his helmet and gloves late in the third period and readied himself to due battle with the six-foot-one, 215 pounder.
His goal? To exact revenge for an earlier shoulder check to the head of the recently-concussed Rene Bourque.
“I’m not sure,” Iginla said. “I really didn’t like the hit on Bourquey. That’s what I was thinking.”
With the linesmen escorting both players to the penalty box, Abdelkader could be seen shouting: “I’m not f-ing scared of you. I’m not f-ing scared of you.”

Iginla And His Game
by Paul on 11/17/10 at 10:41 AM ET
Comments (1)
from Mark Spector of Sportsnet,
There is a point in every career where the arrow begins to point down. Could this be that time for Jarome Iginla?
“There isn’t a great blueprint on what the aging body of a power forward does, because most guys don’t have the luxury of aging,” said Brendan Shanahan, a fine power forward himself who played 21 seasons and gathered 2,489 PIMs between 656 goals.
“Most are done after 14, 15 years. The (John) LeClairs, Cam Neely, Tim Kerr, Kevin Stevens… Their bodies broke down because of the way they played. Wendel Clark broke down even sooner because he played so much bigger than his body.”
So what of Iginla, who has somehow misplaced that ability to find the time and space he used to have?
He has plenty of years left, figures another prominent power winger of the day, Bill Guerin. But perhaps the time has come for Iginla to think his way around the rink, rather than instinctively run over opponents on his way to another 50-goal season.

Is Jarome Iginla The Dan Marino Of The NHL?
by Paul on 11/13/10 at 11:03 PM ET
Comments (1)
from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,
The careers of Jarome Iginla and Dan Marino have more than a little something in common.
Both have played their whole time in one uniform. Both were the centrepieces of their teams. Both were denied better days by the talent they were surrounded with.
In Marino’s case, the Miami Dolphins were forever lacking at running back.
In Iginla’s ongoing and rapidly declining case in Calgary, the Flames have been forever lacking at centre. Who’s the best centre Iginla has ever had? Probably some middle-of- the-road player such as Craig Conroy or Daymond Langkow?
While Marino was clearly higher up the career list than Iginla will ever be, it remains a shame to see players of this magnitude lead their teams season after season without the ultimate result.

Iginla The Talk Of Calgary Fans
by Paul on 11/10/10 at 04:57 PM ET

from Scott Cruickshank of Flames Insider,
Some are blaming coach Brent Sutter for not providing a working system for Iginla.
Some are blaming Iginla for refusing to buy into Sutter’s system.
Some are blaming Iginla for, essentially, not being 25 years old any more.
Some are blaming his linemates, the power play, etc.
And many are wondering what suitable trade return would be for Iginla. (An unimaginable concept a couple of years ago.)
The numbers are damning — in his past 30 (!) regular-season dates, the Flames captain has three goals. Can that be?
Seems impossible, doesn’t it?

A New Month For Iginla
by Paul on 11/02/10 at 05:13 PM ET

from Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun,
Jarome Iginla was the NHL’s top player last November.
If the Calgary Flames captain can’t come close to duplicating his performance this upcoming month, the criticisms and trade talk will grow louder. He knows it.
Traditionally, when the season’s opening month is in the book and the Halloween decorations put away, Iginla tends to heat up.
Last November, Iginla (who had four goals and nine points in October) lit it up with 13 goals and 20 points in 14 outings.
Will we see a similar script unfold?

Could You See Iginla Playing For Another Team?
by Paul on 11/01/10 at 05:32 PM ET
Comments (1)
from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
Publicly, Iginla says he doesn’t want a change of scenery, and is happy trying to win in Calgary. When he signed his last contract – for five years and $7-million (U.S.) a season – he received a no-trade clause as a sign of faith, that the Flames wanted him here for the duration of his deal and presumably the rest of his career.
Is that changing? Or if it isn’t yet, will it soon? Only Iginla knows for sure. But you can be sure that if the Flames ever put his rights in play, there would be a long line of suitors lining up to make a bid, even if he never contends for another Rocket Richard trophy for the rest of his career. That part of the Iginla equation hasn’t changed. Probably won’t for a good long time either.

Kings Would Have Interest In Iginla
by Paul on 10/30/10 at 08:14 PM ET

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPH,
...it’s well understood around NHL circles that since Los Angeles didn’t spend the money it had budgeted for Ilya Kovalchuk last summer, there is indeed room in the budget and under the salary cap for an important acquisition before the Feb. 28 trade deadline. I believe Jarome Iginla is among the list of players the Kings have in mind.
That would go along with the character-type guys the Kings have added over the last two years, players like Ryan Smyth and Willie Mitchell. At this point, I don’t see any indication at all that the Flames would even entertain the thought of moving him. But I bring all this up given the stories out of Calgary this week regarding a possible rift between the Flames captain and the head coach (which was denied by both in the papers).
Iginla is signed for two more seasons at $7 million per year and also has a no-movement clause, so he controls his fate.
Of course, Smyth also had a no-movement clause in his contract, but the Kings persisted for almost a year before getting him out of Colorado in the summer of 2009. Food for thought…

There Is A Problem In Calgary
by Paul on 10/30/10 at 12:15 PM ET
Comments (0)
from George Johnson of the Calgary Herald,
Whenever anyone wanders too close to a hot-button topic around a professional sports team, the instinctive reaction of all concerned is deny, deny! DENY!
Conveniently blame the media and try to solve the issue internally.
Airing dirty laundry in public being strictly taboo; deviating from the old ‘what’s said in the dressing room stays in the . . .’ mantra punishable by dismemberment, or worse.
Not that the captain should be singled out as the lone lamb to stubbornly stray from the flock, wander off from the safety-net system Sutter has painstakingly tried to install here since he became boss. But he is the showpiece, the star, the one they all look to. The example to follow.
This is an unspoken issue that simply has to be resolved. For the welfare of all concerned.
And if Iginla, as he steadfastly maintains, doesn’t actually believe there is a problem, well, that can only exacerbate said problem.

The City of St. Albert rolls out the red carpet today to honour hometown hero Jarome Iginla….
Iginla, 33, led all scorers at the Olympics with five goals in seven games. His seventh point of the tournament was the memorable assist on Sidney Crosby’s golden goal as Canada beat the United States in the final 3-2 in overtime. The gold medal was Iginla’s second in three Olympic appearances.
The Calgary Flames’ captain and all-star right-winger has enjoyed a hall of fame career as the franchise leader in games played (1,024), goals (441) and points (920) in 13 NHL seasons.
Some of his major accomplishments are:
• Rocket Richard Trophy as the NHL’s leading goal scorer in 2002 (52) and 2004 (shared with Rick Nash and Ilya Kovalchuk at 41 apiece).

Without His Grandfather, Iginla Would Not Be In Hockey Today

from Mark Spector of Sportsnet,
When you are one year old and your parents split, no one knows how it can effect the trajectory of life.
Jarome Iginla knows one thing, however: He wouldn’t be a hockey player today had he not landed back at his grandparents’ home at the age of one, his mother Susan working to pay the bills, and his grandfather — a fine fellow named Rick Schuchard — taking over as his father figure.
“The NHL?” asked Iginla on Thursday afternoon. “I wouldn’t have been able to play at all had I not had my grandparents there for me. My mom was busy working. My dad was going to school. I wouldn’t have even BEEN in hockey as a kid.”
They will lay Schuchard to rest on Friday afternoon at the St. Albert United Church, and Jarome will eulogize on behalf of the grandchildren.
Rick was Susan Schuchard’s father, Frances’ loving husband, Jarome Iginla’s grandpa, and an old friend of this sportswriter.

“Obviously, they have decisions to make. If they want me here, yeah, I do want to be here. Again, it’s not because it’s just easy or it’s comfortable. I want to win. I want to win and there’s only so many years, and the years go by fast. I believe with some adjustments we can be a lot better team this year.”

On the eve of their biggest game of the season, Calgary Flames captain Jarome Iginla delivered an extraordinary mea culpa Tuesday, putting the blame largely on himself for the position the team find themselves in, hanging onto their playoff lives by a thread.

Jarome Iginla has spent years carrying the Calgary Flames.
He can’t do it any more.
Not by himself.
Iginla still must remain a star player for the club while its flickering playoff hopes remain alive, but it’s become obvious he needs the supporting cast more than ever in order for the Flames to win on a regular basis.
As much as fans may want to believe the captain remains the same player who was so instrumental in the thrilling journey to the Stanley Cup final of 2004 and a trip to the playoffs every season after, Iginla can no longer be that player every night.

from David Staples of The Cult Of Hockey,
Souray and Iginla had a nasty, nasty fight, where Souray was throwing wild shots and was clearly out to hurt Iginla as much as he could.
I don’t blame Souray for his outrage. Iginla had hurt him bad. And, the fact is, the NHL should have suspended Iginla for ten games for such a reckless play. With the NHL refusing to properly police its own players, the law of the jungle applies, and it’s hard to blame Souray for wanting to pulverize Iginla.
I now read that Oilers coach Pat Quinn says Souray has fractured his wrist (is that the same wrist where he took off the wrist-protector before fighting Iginla).
Great! Just #$%@#$A!@# great!
Way to go Sheldon Souray! Way to go Kevin Lowe! Way to go Steve Tambellini!
If Tambellini actually had a chance to move Souray before Saturday’s game—and I certainly don’t know if he did or not—it’s even more frustrating to think about this whole mess.
more and watch the fight below…

Not The Same Iginla

from George Johnson of the Calgary Herald,
“The desire is still there,’’ Iginla replied, without a hint of rancour. “The leadership (questions) . . . I understand that it happens when you lose a game the way we did (Monday) night.”
As polite and accommodating as Iginla is, CNN is never going to interrupt Anderson Cooper 360 to bulletin something Iginla has said.
Still, even for someone so accustomed to politicking, there was an unusual weariness about his address Tuesday. As if, like an actor in an extended Broadway run, he’d grown tired of reciting the lines.
Maybe Iginla has simply grown tired of the oppressive atmosphere that permeates Pengrowth Saddledome. Fidel Castro held less sway over Cuba for 32 years than Darryl Sutter does at the ‘Dome since being given absolute power. And Sutter is not a big one for laughs.

Iginla Can Only Watch The Shootout

from Scott Cruickshank of Flames Insider,
Jarome Iginla isn’t Wayne Gretzky, Brent Sutter isn’t Marc Crawford, and this wasn’t the 1998 Olympics . . . but how in tarnation do you leave the team’s—heck, the league’s—hottest gunner on the bench for the shootout?
Iginla, thanks to his dramatic draining of a last-minute shot (which forced the extra period and ensuing shootout) has 12 goals in his last 10 games. Not 12 points. But 12 goals. No one has, as they say, been “feeling it” more than No. 12.
And the Flames captain doesn’t merit a spin in the shootout Monday night at the Honda Center?
Curious.

Iginla Back On The Offensive

from George Johnson of the Calgary Herald,
Sauntering down the press box with six and a half minutes remaining, the injured Mike Commodore glanced up from fiddling with his BlackBerry, spotting a familiar face tapping tentatively on a laptop.
“Hey, how’s it going?’’ asked the long-ago local folk hero, his trademark red fright wig/afro shorn fashionably short.
A noncommital shrug.
“Not bad. Same old.’’
“Yeah, I hear you,’’ replied the former Calgary Flame. “Same old . . . ’’
He shook his head, glanced heavenwards, in knowing resignation.
“Same old Jarome.’’
Yup, same old Jarome. At last.

Blame The Fantasy People
by Paul on 10/07/09 at 02:21 PM ET

from Todd Kimberley at NHL.com,
What’s behind all the “what’s-up-with-Jarome” chatter in Calgary?
Craig Conroy has his own pet theory.
“I think a lot of it has to do with fantasy pools now,” chuckled Conroy, a longtime teammate of Calgary Flames captain Jarome Iginla.
“Everybody’s got the fantasy guys ... they might have picked Jarome first overall, so they want him to get some points,” Conroy said prior to Tuesday’s win over Montreal. “But yeah, it’s always been that way. In a Canadian market, they want to see a star player play well early, so they know this is going to be a great year.”
As barometers go, this one has revealed much of the charged climate and high expectations in Flames Nation these days.

Iginla Talks Flames
by Paul on 07/08/09 at 07:49 PM ET

from Peter Zuubrier of CalgaryFlames.com,
“It’s very exciting to get Jay (Bouwmeester) to join us… that’s a great defence group that we have, it’s definitely the strength of our club,” said Iginla.
“They’re guys that can play all different ways, move the puck, skate, play defensively, chip in and help out offensively; they’re very well rounded… If you look at our team we have very good defensemen, but they’ll also contribute offensively. You look at some of the top offensive teams in the league and the defence is a big part of it
The bitter taste leftover from the ending of last season seemed to linger briefly for Iginla, who took responsibility as team captain for the coaching turnover.
“It’s always hard as players when there’s a coaching change. We didn’t achieve the results we were hoping for (last season) and the responsibility is definitely on us… We can improve, we need to improve, and we will improve,” said Iginla who is nonetheless anxious to play for his new coaches.
“It’s very exciting. As a player (Brent Sutter) was very successful and coaching at every level he’s been very successful… I’ve talked to Brent and he’s definitely talked about the defensive side of the puck. Starting there and working out… That can be a strength of our team, we want it to be, and we need to get back there, but we also know it can’t end there and we need to do better on both sides.”

Beware Of The Fired-Up Iginla
by Paul on 04/25/09 at 12:52 PM ET

from Vicki Hall of the Calgary Herald,
“Was I fired up? Yeah I was fired up,” the captain said. “I still think I’m fired up, and I think all of our guys are fired up as far as wanting to win this series.”
But the captain said he is fuelled by the chance to take a 3-2 lead in the series—not a chance to silence incessant trash talk.
“In our dressing room, we do whatever it takes within as close to the rules as we can to win,” he said.
“That’s what it’s about. You get out there, and you know that every team in the playoffs wants the same thing. We’re definitely very hungry for it.”
As for his flash of rage in Game 3?
“It’s part of competing,” he said. “Sometimes, sure, there are moments when you don’t act with the best control.
“But the identify of our team is to be very aggressive, to a man, each guy, to compete and find that balance with your emotions.”

Iginla On The Upcoming Playoffs
by Paul on 04/12/09 at 09:22 PM ET

from Allan of the Globe and Mail,
...But the optimistic captain of the Flames sees something else: His best shot yet to win a Stanley Cup.
Seriously. Iginla said that. Even after all the recent setbacks – the losses, injuries, a power play that hasn’t scored since Hakan Loob played here – Iginla has gone on record to say that facing the Chicago Blackhawks in the postseason is “a good matchup for us” and that the Flames will persevere in the end.
“Do I still believe this is my best chance to win the Cup? Absolutely,” he confirmed.
This is what captains say in the darkest hours, and make no mistake, there hasn’t been a lot of sunshine around the Flames lately. Soon after Calgary ended its regular season Saturday night with a 4-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers, several players offered a battle cry that sounded bleak yet hopeful at the same time. “We’ve been bad against Chicago,” the players said. “We can’t be any worse.”

Iginla Shooting For Records

from Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun,
Jacques Lemaire winced at the notion.
The Minnesota Wild head coach had just put his team through the paces at the Saddledome yesterday before being told how close Jarome Iginla is to two key milestones.
As the captain and the Flames head into tonight’s clash against Minny, Iginla needs two goals to reach 400 for his career and three points to become’s the franchise’s all-time points leader, surpassing Theo Fleury.
Lemaire mockingly flinched and then replied with a wry grin: “Tell him to take his time. He’s gonna get it. There’s no rush. He’ll get it. There’s lots of games left.”

Not A Thing Wrong With Iginla
by Paul on 02/14/09 at 08:30 AM ET

from Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun,
Scoreless in his last six outings and the author of just two goals his last 18 outings, Iginla will be asked 14 different ways to account for his pause in production. Never mind the fact he has 14 points during his “slump” to remain amongst league scoring leaders—everyone wants to know “what’s wrong with Iggy?”
Given the character of the game’s ultimate captain, No. 12 will undoubtedly answer by suggesting he’d like to be scoring more and is expecting more of himself as the team’s leader.
However, the answer he should give is simple: Nothing.

from Mike Board of CalgaryFlames.com,
Certainly he could have left the Flames for more money as a free agent. But he hasn’t. It’s like a job that is not quite complete. And a few of his mentors, Joe Sakic, Steve Yzerman and Mario Lemieux, have all played for the same team throughout their career.
“There are a lot of great hockey cities. For the fans and the passion, there isn’t a city that beats Calgary, ” said Iginla when he signed his five-year, $35 million deal in July 2007.
With Iginla looking to lead the Flames for years to come, we thought we should get to know him just a little better and bring you 10 things you should know about Jarome Iginla.
ONE: The name
The birth certificate reads Jarome Arthur-Leigh Adekunle Tig Junior Elvis Iginla. Born July 1, 1977 in Edmonton. We know him as Jarome or Iggy. Opponents know him as tough and relentless. Iginla, by the way, means ‘Big Tree’ in Yoruba, his father’s native language.

Comparing Iginla To Obama
by Paul on 01/20/09 at 07:01 AM ET
Comments (1)
from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
The parallels in their personal histories are startling, remarkable even.
They are both products of an interracial marriage. Their fathers, black, hailed from Africa, one from Kenya, the other from Nigeria. Their mothers, white, hailed from the hinterland, one from Kansas in the American Midwest, the other from Edmonton in Canada’s frozen north.
The respective marriages faltered early, when they were babies, and so both were raised in households where the grandparents played prominent roles. They were accomplished athletes - one played high-school basketball in the U.S. the other major junior hockey in Canada. They were known, even in the early, more anonymous stages of their lives, for their leadership abilities.
Neither ever backed away from a fight, and while Barack Obama didn’t drop the gloves with Willie Mitchell or Cody McCormick or David Hale - as Calgary Flames forward Jarome Iginla did earlier this NHL season - the campaign to be president of the United States eventually evolved into something of a street fight in its latter days, too.

Your Newest Lady Byng Candidate

from George Johnson of Flames Insider at the Calgary Herald,
While sorting through candidates for the inevitable halfway-home awards selections (Malkin or Ovechkin for the Hart? Nabokov or Niklas Backstrom or Tim Thomas/Manny Fernandez for the Vezina), one possibility simply leapt off the stats page, passed through the corneas and deadened the brain: Jarome Iginla for the ... Lady Byng?!...
Among the NHL’s Top 10 scorers, only NJ Devils’ sprite Zach Parise, Washington’s super-slick Nicklas Backstrom and the reigning Byng holder, Pavel Datsyuk of the Wings, have spent less time in the bin than the Flames’ inspirational captain.

Iginla’s Strange Start
by Alanah McGinley on 11/08/08 at 01:18 PM ET

From Jean Lefebvre at the Herald Hockey blog,
And it hasn’t been a poor start for Iginla so much as a strange one. In 14 games, for instance, he’s had six multiple-point efforts (two of which led to a NHL first star of the week award) and six contests in which he’s been completely held off the sheet.
There’s also been the matter of linemates. Just when you think Mike Keenan has given up on teaming Iginla with Todd Bertuzzi, the coach gives the wingers another whirl as a partnership. Just when it seems Conroy is destined for permanent bottom-six duty, he gets another chance to play with Iginla (and, as was the case Thursday against Nashville, delivers a three-point performance to go with Iginla’s four-pointer).
Update 1:51pm ET: In other Calgary news, after 14 straight starts Kiprusoff is finally getting a night off.

Pick One Player - Vinny Or Iggy
by Paul on 10/29/08 at 08:13 AM ET

from Adam Kimelman of NHL.com,
In the 2004 Stanley Cup Final, one of the most memorable exchanges occurred in Game 3, when the Lightning’s Vincent Lecavalier and the Flames’ Jarome Iginla, each team’s best player and biggest star, dropped the gloves.
The fight sparked both teams to a memorable seven-game series, eventually won by the Lightning.
Who won the fight that night in Calgary four years ago is pretty meaningless. What does matter, though, is who the better player is. That’s for the fans to decide.
