Bouwmeester Now The Ironman Defenseman

Calgary, AB – Jay Bouwmeester played in his 496th consecutive game tonight thus breaking the NHL ironman record for defensemen as the Flames host the Phoenix Coyotes at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Bouwmeester was originally drafted by the Florida Panthers in the 1st round (3rd overall) in the 2002 NHL Draft. He played his first 342 consecutive games with the Panthers starting in the 2003-04 season before he was traded to Calgary on June 27, 2009. Jay played an additional 153 consecutive games with the Flames giving him 495.

“It was a rebound and the guy’s going to the net, so I lift his stick and he f—-ing falls down and (the referee) calls a f—-ing penalty,.  It was terrible, in my opinion.

“I don’t want to say any more because I don’t want to get fined, but it’s mind-boggling to me.”

The Most Overpaid Defenseman

from Brian Costello of The Hockey News at MetroNews Calgary,

Instead of discreetly picking on captain Jarome Iginla as the poster boy for underachievers, maybe coach Brent Sutter ought to try to squeeze a little more out of the player once known as Jay Bouwmeester.

Boo-meester has pretty much blended into the woodwork since arriving from Florida in 2009 and signing a five-year contract worth $33 million. Not since Wade Redden has a player fallen from Canadian Olympic team pedigree to ordinary so quickly. Redden, 33, is now in the AHL, making Boo-meester the most overpaid defenceman in the NHL.

At $6.68-million cap hit, Boo-meester is the third highest-paid defenceman in the NHL behind Brian Campbell ($7.142 million) and Zdeno Chara ($6.916 million).

The list of defencemen making less than Boo-meestar’s cap hit include Duncan Keith, Chris Pronger, Dan Boyle, Mike Green, Nicklas Lidstrom, Andrei Markov, and on and on.

Bouwmeester Defends Himself, Jokinen Wishes Panthers Well

from George Richards of the Miami Herald,

While Bouwmeester gets the blame heaped upon him, he remains a pretty popular figure among the Panthers. Bouwmeester remains friends with a number of players and coach Pete DeBoer, who only had Bouwmeester for one season, continues to rave about his talents.

—Jokinen, the Panthers former captain and the franchise’s all-time leading scorer, says he is hopeful the franchise is going in the right direction.

“They’ve gone through a lot of changes and I hope for the best, I hope they have it figured out,’’ said Jokinen, who keeps his offseason home in Broward County. “It looks like they have a good guy now leading the charge in Dale Tallon. It’s been tough times for the fans in South Florida. They still have fans and support, but it’s tough for them year after year missing the playoffs.’‘

A Better Bouwmeester

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,

Will Bouwmeester ever do enough to justify a salary-cap charge of $6.68-million, third highest in the league behind Zdeno Chara ($7.5-million) and Brian Campbell ($7.14-million)? Probably not. But with one season under his belt in Calgary and his role clarified better than it was a year ago, expect to see Bouwmeester have far greater impact this time around than he did in his debut season with the Flames.

Did Peca Go Against The Code By Ripping Bouwmeester?

from Vicki Hall of Flames Insider,

This is a familiar script. Former coach Mike Keenan took similar umbrage with panelist Matthew Barnaby 18 months back when he called Olli Jokinen a cancer in the locker-room.

“We’re not going to let Jay Bouwmeester or any player on the league be talked about in that manner by a colleague or a peer without challenging it,” King said. “That’s just inappropriate….

“I think he ridiculed him. I think he laughed at him….You bet I’m sticking up for and defending our guy.”

King’s major beef, it seems, is that Peca is a former player, and he’s violating the code by ripping a a one-time opponent.

Peca Not Impressed By Bouwmeester’s Play

from Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun,

Jay Bouwmeester shrugged off the criticism sent his way by TSN analyst and former NHL player Michael Peca during the broadcast of Tuesday’s pre-season game.

However, the Calgary Flames defenceman fired a couple of shots back after hearing Peca say he “enjoyed” playing against Bouwmeester because, among other reasons, he turned pucks over.

“I don’t care. If he wants to say that, that’s fine. He’s not playing any more, so I don’t care,” Bouwmeester said Wednesday. “I’ll probably have a different opinion of the guy that said it. Those guys on TV are what they are.

“At the end of the day, if you’re listening to those guys, you’re in big trouble.”

Flames Need More From Bouwmeester

from Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun,

Jay Bouwmeester signed with Calgary to get his first taste of playoff hockey, yet he’s done little to help his chances of getting there.

On a Flames team full of players who’ve failed to live up to expectations this season, Bouwmeester may be the most disappointing of all given his salary and the reputation he brought as being one of the league’s most complete blueliners.

And while he’s too nice a guy, too smooth a skater and too dependable defensively to be deemed an outright flop, even he would admit things haven’t gone the way he’d hoped this year.

“It’s been alright,” said the soft-spoken defenceman whose two measly goals betray the talents of a man coming off back-to-back 15-goal campaigns.

“It probably hasn’t gone the way I wanted it to offensively.

Catching Up With Two Ex-Panthers

from George Richards of the Miami Herald,

Every offseason, it seemed, brought more drama from changes in management and coaching, to star players being shipped out. Bouwmeester had seen enough.

``The biggest part of it was all the changes and turnover,’’ Bouwmeester said. ``It’s hard to build something and be consistent when that is always going on. I know Pete [DeBoer] is a real good coach, and he did a good job last year and will continue to do so. . . . I was there for six, seven years and had four head coaches and just as many GMs. It’s hard to build something when someone new wants to come in and start over.’‘

Bouwmeester, who is from nearby Edmonton, is back in his element. The players’ parking lot in Calgary has its share of fancy sports cars, but a good number of players share Bouwmeester’s style and drive Chevy or Ford trucks.

Olli Jokinen isn’t one of those players. And unlike Bouwmeester, Jokinen didn’t want out of South Florida.

Bowmeester Happy With His Choice

from Derek Van Diest of the Edmonton Sun,

He spent six seasons with the Panthers, who were eventually forced to deal his negotiating rights to Calgary when it became apparent he wasn’t going to re-sign in Florida.

The Panthers were keen on keeping Bowmeester on their blue line, but his decision to leave was more than financially motivated. As was his desire to play in Calgary.

“It’s different, only because hockey is more of a focus here,” he said. “In Florida it’s sometimes a battle to get people out to the games and it’s something that’s not really natural down there.”

Bouwmeester Arrives With A Decent Price Tag

from George Johnson of the Calgary Herald,

Astonishing at it might seem, Sutter probably even underpaid.

In the hockey market, understand, Jay Bouwmeester’s a Picasso or a Rodin. These types of players don’t simply drop out of the sky and into your lap: A 25-year-old stud defenceman stuck in the bright and balmy, but still deadened hockey market of south Florida, who, you get the feeling, has yet to unearth the full might of his vast potential. A star who, in a nurturing environment, could be a super-duper-star.

Why, they’re rarer than photos of Darryl Sutter smiling.

The addition of Bouwmeester now provides the Flames with a Big Three—including Robyn Regehr and Dion Phaneuf—the envy of any organization around. This acquisition undoubtedly means adios to UFA Adrian Aucoin, and leaves the Flames’ blueline also manned by battle-scarred old warrior Cory Sarich and the handy Mark Giordano. If Sutter can get the young and improving Adam Pardy re-signed, it’s a very solid group.

Report- Bouwmeester Agrees To Terms In Calgary

via TSN,

Sources tell TSN Jay Bouwmeester has agreed to terms with the Calgary Flames.

Bouwmeester avoids unrestricted free agency, agreeing to a 5 year deal.

added 8:34pm,

Calgary, AB - Calgary Flames General Manager Darryl Sutter announced today the signing of defenseman Jay Bouwmeester to a multi-year agreement.

The Flames acquired Bouwmeester on June 27, 2009 from the Florida Panthers in exchange for Jordan Leopold and the 67th pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

“Jay is one of the most complete defenseman in the game, and we are very pleased to have reached an agreement that will make him an important component of the Calgary Flames success,” said Sutter. “We identified Jay as the priority player where we were going to focus our money. We wanted an opportunity a few days in advance of the deadline, and that’s why we made the move we did this past weekend.”

“I am happy to have this deal done as Calgary was a team I was very interested in playing for. I was encouraged by the commitment Calgary showed by acquiring me prior to July 1,” said Bouwmeester. “I am familiar with some of the players and believe we have a strong club that is poised to make the next step in becoming a championship club. I look forward to contributing to that success.”

added 8:42pm, TSN has added this to their story from above,

Bouwmeester avoids unrestricted free agency, agreeing to a 5 year deal worth $6.6 million per year against the salary cap.

Your Daily Bouwmeester Talk

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,

Local agent Byron Baltimore has talked to Calgary general manager Darryl Sutter twice in the last two days and he is expected to make Bouwmeester an offer before Wednesday’s 10 a.m. MDT opening of the free-agent marketplace. The Flames acquired Bouwmeester’s negotiating rights from the Florida Panthers on Saturday.

If they want to sign Bouwmeester, 25, the youngest and arguably biggest free agent prize out there, the Flames appear to be restricted in how much money they can pay the Edmonton-born defenceman.

That’s because Flames captain Jarome Iginla, one of the top-10 players in the league, took a hometown discount when he signed his latest deal with Calgary for five years at $7 million per year. The optics of paying Bouwmeester more than Iginla would not be good.

So does that put the Flames out of the running for the smooth skating defenceman?

Not necessarily.

More Talks With Bouwmeester Today

from Steve MacFarlane of the Calgary Sun,

Both Jarome Iginla and Robyn Regehr made calls to the Edmonton native before Sutter travelled north up the QEII yesterday for a face-to-face meeting with Bouwmeester and agent Bryon Baltimore.

Baltimore said another meeting will take place today in Edmonton.

“We had some discussions about the overall situation,” Baltimore said last night. “I think we have a reasonable understanding of each other.

“We’ll see what transpires.”...

The notion Bouwmeester has another level of excellence in him is what makes signing the 25-year-old a massive priority for Sutter and the Flames. If he hits free agency tomorrow, teams will throw ridiculous amounts of dollars his way.

Few may be able to offer the balance the Flames sport, with a winning team and a special environment in addition to a solid amount of money.

Another Rumor Shot Down

from Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun,

With his client’s first shot at unrestricted free agency only a couple of sleeps away, Bryon Baltimore won’t let it be known where Jay Bouwmeester stands.

At least not to the media in regards to negotiations with the Calgary Flames.

However, Baltimore was willing to shoot down any rumours of a deal already being in place between the Flames and the defenceman.

One infamous Internet site claimed yesterday a deal with a cap hit of US$6.3 million was in place, which had tongues wagging among Flames fans.

“I can dispel that rumour,” Baltimore said from Edmonton. “We have not agreed to anything because we haven’t even talked yet.”

Now Comes The Hard Part - Signing Bouwmeester

from Allan Muir of Sports Illustrated,

Sutter will have to knock the socks off Bouwmeester’s agent, Bryon Baltimore, to keep him from exploring free agency on July 1, the course of action the pair has planned all along. That means something like a decade-long deal with an average cap hit somewhere in the $6.5-$7 million range. That’s a hefty chunk of change in and of itself, but even more problematic considering what looks to be a tight cap situation in Calgary.

It appears as though the Flames will have at least $9.3 million coming off the cap on July 1 when the contracts of Adrian Aucoin ($4 million), Mike Cammalleri ($3.35 million) and Todd Bertuzzi ($1.95 million) expire. That creates enough room for Bouwmeester, but creates several other holes, especially up front where the Flames have just four legitimate top-six forwards…

It also means that the Flames must lose some salary somewhere.

How The Flyers Can Get Bouwmeester

from Chuck Gormley of the Courier-Post,

Despite months of preparation and countless mock drafts, the Flyers may very well steal the show tonight by landing the rights to Bouwmeester, a smooth-skating, hard-hitting defenseman who has identified the Flyers as one of six teams he would play for next season.

The only way for the Flyers to fit Bouwmeester’s projected $7 million salary under the cap is for Holmgren to include one of their defensemen—perhaps Matt Carle and his $3.4 million cap hit—in a deal with the Panthers or another NHL team. The Flyers are also top-heavy at the forward position, where the cap numbers for Daniel Briere ($6.5 million), Simon Gagne ($5.25 million) and Joffrey Lupul ($4.25 million) have become restrictive.

If Holmgren is confident Bouwmeester wants to play in Philadelphia, he might wait until July 1 to sign him and work out a subsequent trade to shed salary, much the way Bob Clarke did in 2005, when he signed Peter Forsberg, then traded Jeremy Roenick for future considerations.

Bouwmeester Not Talking

from Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer,

Before the start of the free-agent period, a player can tell his team - in Bouwmeester’s case, Florida - he is willing to talk with a team that is interested in acquiring his rights.

Bouwmeester has not given the Flyers permission to talk with him and see if he would sign for X amount of dollars before they made a deal for him.

He apparently hasn’t given any team permission, an NHL source said.

“My gut sense is that they can’t get him to agree to talk to anybody now,” said a Flyers official who asked to remain anonymous. “That’s the wrinkle.”

Possible Bouwmeester Destinations

from Brian Biggane of the Palm Beach Post,

If a deal is made for Bouwmeester, it probably will be at or before the NHL Entry Draft being held in Montreal on Friday and Saturday.

Speculation in Philadelphia is that the Flyers would be willing to send 25-year-old right winger Joffrey Lupul to Florida in exchange for Bouwmeester’s rights….

Vancouver also is expected be in the running, and goaltender Roberto Luongo, who knows Bouwmeester well from their time in Florida, could be a selling point.

While Calgary already has a high-end young defenseman in Dion Phaneuf, there has been speculation the Flames could deal Phaneuf to Ottawa for disgruntled sniper Dany Heatley, leaving a major void on the blueline.

Edmonton is probably not in the mix because of repeated failures of other hometown products, who typically face ridiculously high expectations from the hometown fans.

Can Bouwmeester Be The Man?

from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,

Brian Burke can’t admit to the possibility of being intrigued by Bouwmeester because that would constitute tampering eight days before the free agent season officially begins. But he is thinking about it. He is thinking seriously about this 25-year-old defenceman. And the Maple Leafs will be among the bidders on July 1, no matter how silent he remains for now.

Just how high they are willing to go, how much money, how many years—and whether Bouwmeester would have any interest in playing in Toronto for a team on the rebuild—are all questions in need of answers for a player who has yet to define his career.

The Leafs, being where they are, have no choice but to take a shot at Bouwmeester. Because of his age. Because of his size. Because of his skill set. Because of all the possibilities he presents. Look how Zdeno Chara helped turn around a Boston Bruins team in terrible shape. Could Bouwmeester have the same kind of impact where he eventually lands?

Bouwmeester Not Oilers #1 Target

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,

Will the Edmonton Oilers make a play to sign Florida Panthers defenceman Jay Bouwmeester or trade for his negotiating rights just before the free-agent market opens on July 1? Sources say the Oilers would rather, for now, spend the $6 million US or so a year it would take to sign the 25-year-old unrestricted free agent on somebody to play with winger Ales Hemsky on their No. 1 line.

The Oilers like the Edmonton product, who will likely be on Canada’s 2010 Olympic team, maybe as a shutdown-type defenceman. But they see other bigger holes on their club. They’re crying out for a goal-scorer.

Edmonton would also have to move a blue-liner to bring Bouwmeester in and they aren’t prepared to do that.

Bouwmeester Not Limited To Playing In W. Canada

from Steve Gorten of the Sun-Sentinel,

A report in the Ottawa Sun last week cited anonymous league sources saying Bouwmeester has already told the Panthers he won’t return. Asked if that was true, Sexton, noting he has had “frequent” conversations with Bouwmeester’s agent, said, “Until such time we know exactly what’s going to happen, I don’t think it’s appropriate to comment.”

Asked about the same report, Bouwmeester’s agent, Bryon Baltimore, said Wednesday: “We have always said we’d wait to see what unfolded July 1 [the start of free agency]. That in itself speaks as to what is going to happen.”

Baltimore said he hasn’t given the Panthers a list of teams Bouwmeester would like to play for, but “we’d certainly be open to discussing that with them.”

Baltimore said that while returning to western Canada is a factor for the Edmonton, Alberta, native, he’s not limiting himself to that.

Bouwmeester Likely To Be Moved Before UFA Period Starts

JayBo is a goner, and the move likely will happen at next week’s NHL draft in Montreal.

That was the candid opinion of Flyers’ general manager Paul Holmgren, Wednesday, as he met with reporters to talk about the upcoming draft in Montreal.

“I’d say there’s probably a good chance of that happening,” Holmgren said at Skate Zone, when asked whether Florida will deal defenseman Jay Bouwmeester’s rights next week.

Just as they were in the hunt during the March trade deadline, the Flyers are one of several clubs expected to make a strong pitch for the 25-year-old blue liner.

Panthers’ Gamble Not Paying Off

From Wes Goldstein at CBSSports:

Their gamble was keeping Jay Bouwmeester, their much-coveted young defenseman who could walk away for nothing this summer as a free agent and was arguably the most valuable potential asset at the deadline. Bouwmeester has rejected several contract extension offers from the Panthers over the last few years, leading to the widely held assumption around the league that he is just counting the days until he gets out of Florida.

He won’t deny that, but the Panthers still resisted the temptation to deal him because he is their best player in the midst of a strong season and they are real playoff contenders for the first time since the turn of the century. Getting there is critical to an organization struggling to attract fans, and keeping Bouwmeester, despite the risk of coming away empty-handed was supposed to send a vote of confidence to the players along with the message that the future is now.

But if the message was received, something apparently got lost in translation by a team that doesn’t seem to have any real leaders in the dressing room or even a captain.

The Offers For Bouwmeester

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,

The Canucks were willing to give up LW Mason Raymond and a No. 1 draft pick. The belief is Florida wanted either D Kevin Bieksa or D Alex Edler included and GM Mike Gillis wasn’t willing to make the move. That’s where the discussions ended for Vancouver.

The Flyers wanted to move either RW Joffrey Lupul or RW Scottie Upshall (who landed in Phoenix) along with prospect James vanRiemsdyk and a No. 1 pick to the Panthers. It’s believed Florida wanted LW Scott Hartnell as part of the trade.

There is risk involved for the Panthers. A first-round playoff fall doesn’t constitute playoff success.

Flyers After Bouwmeester

from Bob McKenzie of TSN,

The Philadelphia Flyers are stepping up their efforts to acquire defenceman Jay Bouwmeester from the Florida Panthers, but salary cap constraints are rearing their ugly head.

The Flyers are bumping up against the cap and they are working hard to try to free up some space.

Sources say one of the options is trading goaltender Marty Biron and turning the number one job over to Antero Niittymaki. One potential scenario has the Flyers trading Biron to the Phoenix Coyotes as part of a plan that would see the Coyotes flip Biron to another team.

But the Coyotes aren’t going to make that move unless they have the other deal already set up.

Bouwmeester’s Agent Talks A Bit

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,

We sought out Bryon Baltimore, the elusive agent of Jay Bouwmeester, who, like his client, keeps a low profile and stays out of the media spotlight. But he was kind enough to chat with ESPN.com before rushing off to the airport and heading back to Edmonton.

“I can’t say that it’s that interesting a week in the sense that Jay’s focus in on the playoff run and helping the Panthers get there,” said Baltimore. “That’s been his focus all year.”

The Panthers have been unable to get Bouwmeester, a pending unrestricted free agent July 1, to agree to a contract extension and that’s why they are contemplating moving him next week if the deal is right.

“We’ve had ongoing dialogue and whatnot,” Baltimore said of contract talks with the Panthers. “I’ve always treated the business end of it and the negotiating end of it as confidential, so I can’t say that we have not spoken, but I have to leave it at that.”

Bouwmeester & More Trade Talk

from Anthony J. SanFilippo of the Delco Times,

The Flyers would like to improve their blue line and Bouwmeester would be a significant upgrade.

There are a few problems getting in the way of a possible deal.

First and foremost, the Flyers have salary-cap issues. They would need to trade the equivalent or greater salary to Florida in order to fit Bouwmeester on the roster. Bouwmeester makes $4.875 million.

Secondly, Bouwmeester, 25, is an unrestricted free agent at the conclusion of the season. If the Flyers were to make a deal for the defenseman, they would want to make sure they could sign him to a long-term deal. Trading for him as a rental wouldn’t be prudent, especially considering what he’s going to cost.

Which leads to problem No. 3: The Panthers want an NHL-caliber defenseman to replace him and an NHL forward, yet they don’t want to take too much salary back in return.

Panthers Have To Trade Bouwmeester

from The Good, The Bad And The Duthie,

What do you do, Jacques?  What in the world do you do?

You trade him.  That’s what you do.  You cannot watch Bouwmeester walk away for nothing.  A couple of (possible) home playoff dates aren’t worth it.

And I believe that Martin will do just that, unless the trade offers are laughably bad, which they shouldn’t be.  As trade deadline approaches, they will get better and better.  Someone will put together an attractive package that works; perhaps a solid NHL player, a top prospect, and a first round pick.  And Jacques will take it.

Panthers Need To Hang Onto Bouwmeester

from Ethan J. Skolnick of the Sun-Sentinel,

Most are predicting, with good reason, that he will not re-sign. The fact that he hasn’t agreed to an extension, when the Panthers want to retain him, is evidence enough. Why would he go? Well, he’s 25, and he hasn’t played in the postseason since the Panthers drafted him third overall in 2002, one pick after Atlanta took Lehtonen. He is from hockey-crazed Alberta, and while playing in relative obscurity here seems the best fit for Bouwmeester’s introverted personality, his father, Dan, told New Times that South Florida “shouldn’t even be in the NHL” and “it’s not a hockey town.”

So all signs point to relocation to the North, to play for a fan base that better appreciates his attributes, even if it might also be more critical of the inconsistency of his physicality.

This has all inspired the assertion that the Panthers should get value for him now, while they can. After all, better to get 80 cents on the dollar than nothing.

That would be a reasonable argument, and the prudent approach, for any franchise other than this one. The Panthers will never get any traction, or respect, without a playoff appearance.

Talking About Bouwmeester

from George Richards of On Frozen Pond,

As expected, the local buzz surrounded Jay Bouwmeester and his contract. The general consensus around here is that Jay won’t be with the Panthers (big shock), and that Edmonton could offer some serious jingle to get their hometown boy back. I don’t think Jay will sign here to play under a microscope, and two people I talked to up here agree with that assessment. The Oilers are going to try to get him, though.

Pete (DeBoer) on Jay: ‘‘He’s been outstanding. I didn’t have a real appreciation for how good he is. He has that unique combination of speed and range where he can shut down the best players on every team. He’s also found his offensive game, something that started last year when he put up 15 goals.

“I don’t think it has changed with (Bouwmeester),” said Martin, the former Senators coach and Rockland native.

Sources say Martin is taking one more stab at locking up Bouwmeester before sending him packing.

The Panthers hoped the hiring of coveted junior coach Peter DeBoer would send the message that the franchise is serious about getting back on track and into the playoffs.

Keep An Eye On Bouwmeester

from Dave Hyde of the Sun-Sentinel,

Watch Jay Bouwmeester. He’ll tell the whole story of this Panthers season. Everyone wonders if keeping a failed coach as general manager makes sense, if trading the top scorer was smart, if there’s finally a blueprint to the playoffs and not another skate through the wilderness.

Watch Bouwmeester.

He’ll answer your questions.

We talk a lot these days about how pro athletes don’t care enough, how they put money before winning or get long-term contracts and quit working. Bouwmeester did exactly what fans want star athletes to do.

Bouwmeester Talk

from the Sun-Sentinal,

Bouwmeester said he’s frustrated with not making the playoffs in his five NHL seasons with the Panthers and wasn’t going to decide this summer whether to re-sign or leave as an unrestricted free agent after all the latest edition of offseason changes.

“If I wasn’t [unsure], I would have signed something,” Bouwmeester said, adding that he’s “not closing doors” on the possibility of signing long term.

He said the team’s lack of success “absolutely” is why he’s hesitant to commit long term.

Bouwmeester Wants Everything To Fit

from Derek Van Diest of the Edmonton Sun,

This off-season Bouwmeester and the Panthers nearly went to arbitration, instead settling on a last-minute, one-year deal worth $4.8-million.

Once the contract is up, Bouwmeester is free to go play where he chooses.

“I think both sides were happy with it,” he said. “I wasn’t prepared to sign anything long term at this point. It was good not having to go to arbitration. I’ve done that once before and it’s not fun. It can leave a pretty bitter taste in everyone’s mouth.”...

“I know (free agency) is out there, but it’s not really a big deal,” he said.

“I just want to be in a place where everything fits, you’re happy and hopefully you can have some success.”

What To Do With Bouwmeester

from Scott Burnside of ESPN,

Even if they get off to a great start, even if they look like a playoff team, will it be enough to keep Bouwmeester in sandals for the long haul? Rookie head coach Pete De Boer represents the fifth head coach to pilot the Panthers since Bouwmeester arrived in the fall of 2002, with Mike Keenan, Rick Dudley, John Torchetti and Martin having all had at least a brief twirl at the post.

And so the Panthers face the grisly prospect that after years of showing so little whatever, they might show in the coming months it might not be nearly enough to keep yet another core piece from sliding away in a market where all too few people care to begin with.

more

from Ken Campbell of the Hockey News,

So let’s get this straight, shall we? Bouwmeester is now going to sit back and wait to see if the Panthers have improved enough and are on the road to respectability before gracing them with a decision on whether or not he’ll return?

When exactly does Bouwmeester himself begin to accept some of the responsibility for the on-ice fortunes of the Panthers? If he’s supposed to be their undisputed No. 1 defenseman, shouldn’t he be expected to have a major part in leading the way to the Panthers becoming a playoff team?

Bouwmeester Signs One Year Deal

According to George Richards of On Frozen Pond, Jay Bouwmeester has signed a one year deal with the Panthers.

Updated 12:56pm ET (alanah): From from George Richards at On Frozen Blog

On the surface, this doesn’t look like the Panthers accomplish much since Jay would have received a one-year deal tomorrow anyway. Hearing the deal is for $4.8 million, and the Panthers felt he could have received as much as $5.5 tomorrow.

The one thing this does is create some good will between the two sides. The fact these two could come to some sort of agreement means Jay may be amenable for something else later one. Signing before going to arbitration eliminates some bad vibes that could come out of the hearing.

Bouwmeester Has Issues With Panthers

from George Richards of On Frozen Pond,

Have spoken to a number of folks within the organization (none of whom own the initials J.M.) and even a couple of players. Not one thinks Jay signs a long-term deal here before his hearing, and only one said he expects Jay to be here come the start of the 2009-10 season. It appears to me that there isn’t just one reason why Jay isn’t a big fan of the Panthers; there are quite a few issues here.

Jay’s agent told our Barry Jackson that he rejected the Panthers most recent offer (I have heard almost $6 million per for six years but cannot get that confirmed by the agent nor JM) and they are preparing for arbitration. Which is their right. And, I’ve been told, the Panthers will give Jay whatever the arbiter rules he’s worth for the coming season and roll the dice hoping to keep him.

Bouwmeester Talks Continue

from George Richards of the Miami Herald,

There is a thought the Panthers secretly hoped Bouwmeester would sign an offer sheet with another NHL team this summer, giving the Panthers a chance to match the deal and lock Bouwmeester in long-term.

Since Bouwmeester elected to go to arbitration, he cannot sign with another team; Martin said the Panthers aren’t going to trade him.

‘‘We’re confident we’ll get something done,’’ Martin said. ``That’s our approach right now. That’s the way we’re going. We still are having discussions. It’s been a process that’s been good on both parts. It hasn’t been ugly. It’s been healthy discussions from both sides. We’re just trying to find a meaningful pay scale he’ll be happy with.’‘

Bouwmeester Options

From George Richards at On Frozen Pond,

Only a few people—Jay Bouwmeester, his agent and perhaps JM the GM—know whether Florida’s No. 4 wants to continue his relationship with the Panthers much longer.

Jay has already decided to take the Panthers to arbitration, which means the thoughts he would sign an offer sheet with another team is over. For now, it’s the Panthers or no one for Jay. But there are a few options.
