Jeff Carter Out With Separated Shoulder

from Aaron Portzline of Puck-Rakers,

Blue Jackets center Jeff Carter suffered a separated shoulder in the third period of tonight’s 7-4 loss to Anaheim in Honda Center.

“We’ll see where he’s at and we’ll get more detail tomorrow,” Blue Jackets coach Scott Arniel said. The Jackets are scheduled to fly to Chicago on Monday and will finish this road trip on Tuesday in Chicago.

Carter was injured on his first shift of the third period when he was blindsided by Ducks defenseman Francois Beauchemin, a former Jacket. He did not return to the game.

Carter Rumor Put To Rest

via Aaron Portzline of Puck-Rakers,

Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson, reached this morning by phone in Boston, refuted a report by RDS on Thursday that center Jeff Carter has requested a trade.

“There has been no trade request,” Howson said.

Asked if Carter or his agent, Rick Curran, had even intimated that the player would welcome a move, Howson said: “No. Not at all.”

He then continued ...

“Look, nobody’s happy right now. Jeff’s not happy. Rick (Nash) isn’t happy. We’ve won three games. Nobody’s happy. We see Jeff as part of the solution here. We want to get him integrated into the lineup and into the team. He’s missed 10 games, and he’s only now getting back into the lineup and playing. We gave up two very big assets for him.”

Curran also has denied that Carter has requested a trade.

Carter & Nash Ready To Roll

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,

It got going Friday with the opening of camp at Nationwide Arena, where players underwent medicals before they take the ice for the first time Saturday. Coach Scott Arniel didn’t waste any time confirming that Carter would begin camp centering fellow star Rick Nash. Where it goes from there is up to the two big guys.

“That’s something I’ve been looking forward to all summer,” said Carter. “I got to play with some pretty good players in Philly, but to play with a guy like Rick is taking it to a whole new level. I’m definitely excited and hopefully we can build some chemistry quickly and get things rolling.”

Nash has only had to wait nearly a decade to get to line up with a center of Carter’s ilk. Not that he ever complained. But after being a one-man show for so many years here in Columbus, which simplified the other team’s defensive scheme, help has arrived.

“To get Carter is huge,” Nash told ESPN.com on Friday. “Ownership stepped up big time; they showed they want to win. It’s what they said they wanted to do, and for them to do it is big.”

Alcohol: The key to success

image

With unbearably hot days and lack of stimulation from the Blue Jackets side of the NHL this past week, my only option is to down tallboys of cream ale and watch the program Columbus airs entitled “Slap shots”. Such an original name for a hockey broadcast—except for the fact that it is just a re-run to anyone who has been watching “Jackets TV” on the website when it posts. I have watched the first three out of nine scheduled broadcasts and found nothing new. It’s disappointing to see Ryan Johansen making a salad instead of training or giving thoughts on next season, as well as having to deal with Jeff Rimer babbling on my television set. This encourages the rate at which I drink.

This article isn’t about my drinking, but about men who are drunk and successful. No, this isn’t about the forefathers of the US but instead Mike Richards and Jeff Carter.

Morning Line

If I am a Flyers fan, I suppose I am happy about getting rid of Bluto and D-Day. But I also have to wonder about Bryzgalov, who has won nothing, and Voracek, whose potential has been plied to a much lesser degree than his refrigerator. And what about Chris Pronger? He has a reputation for splitting locker rooms and probably had a hand in jettisoning Bluto and D-Day, if not leaking the “Dry Island” story, nudge-nudge, wink-wink, know what I mean

The Inevitable Carter and Richards Blog

I thought I might have been able to avoid it; but merely halfway through the offseason, a dry island iceberg has reared its ugly head ever-so-slightly above the surface, smoldering enough to catch the eyes of a Philadelphia Daily News gossip reporter. His accounts yesterday have simultaneously rejuvenated belief in the unsinkable team the Flyers apparently had over a month ago, while also fanning the foolish notions of alcoholism burning deeply below the surface and beyond sight.

I only intend to touch on it once, because quite frankly what’s done is done and a lot of opinions are bound to stay unchanged, but the team did what they felt they had to do to take that final step as an organization. It isn’t the end of the world, and it has more to do with a few drinks and numbers on a corkboard. Simply put – they were hockey moves.

Jeff Carter Speaks Out

From Aaron Portzline at Puck-Rakers at the Columbus Dispatch:

“It’s been a tough couple of days,” Carter said. “I spent six years in Philadelphia. I think so highly of the organization. It was a real shot to me.

“My decision to not talk had absolutely nothing to do with being traded to Columbus. I know it’s a team that has struggled in the past, but there’s a great future there, a lot of young players. I’m excited to be there.”

The Blue Jackets traded for Carter on Thursday, but he’d been incommunicado with the exception of a brief text message conversation with Jackets captain Rick Nash.

Blue Jackets management turned proactive this morning. General manager Scott Howson, coach Scott Arniel and Nash flew from Columbus to Sea Isle, N.J., to meet with Carter in his residence. Beginning at noon, they had a 90 minute meeting that must have calmed a lot of nerves.

Carter Shocked By Trade

from Frank Seravalli of Frequent Flyers,

Carter had long been discussed as an option for the Flyers to move once they acquired Ilya Bryzgalov’s rights on June 7. It was apparent that they would need to move a significant chunk of salary in order to sign the free agent goaltender. Carter’s cap number was the only fit.

“Jeff called me and asked about the rumors two weeks ago,” (player agent Rick) Curran said. “He figured teams were asking about him anyways. I called Paul and I asked him if this is something we should be concerned about.

“Paul assured me that there was nothing to worry about, that they weren’t interested in trading Jeff. He told me that Jeff could come in and meet with him to tell him the same things. And he did. He assured him that they weren’t trading him.”

Carter Trade Moves Columbus Closer To The Playoffs

from Rob Oiler of the Columbus Dispatch,

“This takes attention off Rick,” Howson said. “R.J. (Umberger) did that to an extent ... but now if we play (Nash and Carter) together, they won’t be able to key on just Rick.”

Two All-Stars. Granted, the Blue Jackets gave up a lot, and still need more pieces before they can be considered an automatic playoff team, but Carter gets them much closer now.

Credit Howson for making a splash, by diving into the deep end and still landing on his feet.

Burke Still Searching For #1 Center

from Damien Cox of The Spin,

Mike Richards would have been an awfully nice fit at centre for the Maple Leafs.

Jeff Carter less so - more of a shooter - but still pretty good.

Alas, the frustration for Brian Burke is on the day the Flyers moved both, he got shut out on both.

Richards, a more expensive, 2011 version of Doug Gilmour, you could argue, was the one Burke bid hardest on. But, from a Leaf perspective, at least Los Angeles likely won’t be in the bidding for Brad Richards now that they’ve got Mike Richards, the former Philly captain.

If Brad Richards now wants the big money and the long term, it looks like he’ll have to get it from the Rangers or the Leafs. Anywhere else, he’ll have to go for a discount. This we know; he won’t wave his no-trade, so he’ll be free and open to offers on July 1st.

And the Leafs will be making him an offer.

Carter To Columbus Talk

from Aaron Portzline of Puck-Rakers,

Talks have simmered between Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson and Philadelphia GM Paul Holmgren for more than six months now—they last chatted at the NHL scouting combine two weeks ago—and a Bryzgalov signing could be the trigger.

Sources have indicated to The Dispatch that the Blue Jackets would trade a roster player, quite possibly winger Jake Voracek, and their first-round pick (No. 8 overall), to the Flyers for veteran center Jeff Carter.

Carter is signed through the 2020-21 season at $5.27 million per season according to capgeek.com. Of those two numbers, it’s the term—11 more seasons—that would scare off some clubs, but the Blue Jackets have reached a point where they need to start taking measured risks.

He’s a proven top-six center, which remains a roster need. He’s a proven scorer, with 115 goals the last three seasons. At 6-foot-3, 205 pounds Carter could give the Blue Jackets a formidable 1-2 punch with captain Rick Nash, which they’re currently missing. He is a player who has gone where few in the Blue Jackets dressing room have ventured—deep in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Loss of Lecavalier Not Crippling but Lightning Now Face a Lofty Challenge

A tough stretch just got tougher for the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Already missing forwards Steve Downie and Simon Gagne from their top-six forward ranks, the Bolts will now be without the services of Vincent Lecavalier, who suffered a non-displaced fracture of his right hand in Thursday’s 6-3 loss in Washington and will miss three to four weeks as a result.

Forwards Johan Harju and Marc-Antoine Pouliot are set to be summoned from AHL Norfolk today to help stabilize a now-hobbled Lightning offense.

For Lecavalier, who will miss at least ten games barring any expedited recovery, the setback marks another disappointing chapter in recent history. The Lightning captain followed up career bests of 108 and 92 points from 2006-2008 with 67 and 70-point campaigns the last two years and was off to an unremarkable start to this season with three goals and nine points in 13 games. All this, of course, after signing an 11-year, $85-million dollar contract extension in July of ’08 by former ownership…

JJ’s Three Cheers: 10/12/10

Today’s three cheers, saluting those who deserve as much for their performances yesterday:

***Cheers to Vancouver’s Roberto Luongo, whose 41 saves thwarted the efforts of his former club, the Florida Panthers en route to the first win of the season for the Canucks. Luongo’s .973 save percentage through his club’s first two games is hardly anything to scoff at and his quick start is a great sign for a Canucks team with extremely high hopes for the season. As for Florida, 42 shots on goal are great but three goals through two games won’t get the job done and that sort of paltry offensive production could be exactly what keeps the Panthers from succeeding this season. Tomas Vokoun can only keep opponents at bay to a certain extent.

Jeff Carter Will Practice, May Be Available To Play

via Kevin Kurz of PhiladelphiaFlyers.com,

The Philadelphia Flyers could be getting their leading goal scorer back for the final two games of the regular season.

Jeff Carter, who suffered a fracture in his left foot on March 21 against Atlanta, has been cleared to return to practice following an MRI in Philadelphia on Wednesday morning. Carter, who leads the team in goals (33) and is tied with Mike Richards for the most points (60), could be available to play in the Flyers’ home-and-home with the New York Rangers. Philadelphia is at Madison Square Garden on Friday night and hosts its division rival on Sunday afternoon at the Wachovia Center..

“Jeff had his MRI this morning and he is healing up nicely,” said general manager Paul Holmgren. “He completed his off-ice rehab and conditioning today and will practice with the team [Thursday].”

Carter & Hartnell Going In Opposite Directions

from Anthony J. SanFilippo of the Daily Times,

Jeff Carter and Scott Hartnell have been linked together in many conversations this season, both on and off the ice.

Some of that chatter has been fair. The rest of it could sometimes borderline slanderous.

But whatever had people talking about them is irrelevant now, since the two couldn’t be any more the polar opposites than they are.

Carter is in one of his noted scoring outbursts. He has goals in seven of the past eight Flyers games and has reached 30 goals in back-to-back seasons….

The same can’t be said for Hartnell, who is stuck in the worst drought of his professional career since he was a 20-year-old neophyte grinder with the Nashville Predators in 2002-03.

Now a handsomely paid winger on the top line of a playoff team, Hartnell has fallen well below expectations.

All Jeff Carter

Jeff Carter of the Philadelphia Flyers took part in an NHL tele-conference today.

Q.    Have you always shot the puck as much as you’re doing this year? And at this time of the season, did you think you would have more goals than Ovechkin?

JEFF CARTER: Yeah, I mean, when I grew up, my dad always taught me you can’t score if you don’t shoot. So I try to put it in the net every chance I get. The second part about Ovechkin, I don’t know how long I can hold him off for. He seems to be scoring well these days. He’s a great player. We’ll see.

Q.    The number of fights this year is up. Have you noticed the play being more chippy this year, a little bit more closer quarters than they have been?

JEFF CARTER
: I don’t really see a difference at all. I think it’s just the way the game is. I think it’s intense, tight games this year. I think a lot of teams are real close to each other in the standings and stuff like that. They mean a lot more, and guys are just battling.

Carter Carrying A Big Stick

from Chuck Gormley of the Courier-Post via USA TODAY,

It has been 33 years since Reggie “The Rifle” Leach victimized goalies with a lethal slap shot that produced a league-high 61 goals.

No Philadelphia Flyer has led the NHL in scoring since then, but Jeff Carter could become the next. Thanks to a wrist shot that many consider the best in the league, the center has 20 goals, second in the league and two behind the league-leading total of Thomas Vanek of the Buffalo Sabres….

“His shot is the hardest shot I’ve ever seen in my life,” Flyers goalie Antero Niittymaki said. “The reality is that he can score goals from the blue line. He has a long stick, and it’s always tougher when you face a big guy with a long stick.”

Carter Impressing Everyone

from Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer,

...In short, the player whom his teammates call “Carts” is blossoming into one of the NHL’s best two-way players.

“You see guys that have the ingredients that Jeff has, but never in the same person,” winger Mike Knuble said. “It’s always somebody who has the big shot, somebody who can fly up and down the ice, somebody who’s a great defender. He combines all of that. He gets matched up against the top players; he can do it all. Whatever you need at a certain point in the game, he seems to be able to deliver.”

“The sky is the limit for Jeff,” coach John Stevens said. “He has the skill set that’s conducive to scoring a lot of goals. He’s near the top of the league in shots. He skates well enough to get separation to get offensive opportunities, and he’s got a shot that can beat goalies from distance.”

Carter, from London, Ontario, is part of a deep 2003 draft that Holmgren said “may go down as the greatest ever.”

Bizarre Dealings

from Tony Gallagher of the Vancouver Province,

The farther one goes along with this Collective Bargaining Agreement now in place in the NHL, the more bizarre are the experiences that keep arising….

The first is the case of Evgeni Malkin, who gave the Pens and their fans a lift of hope when he announced—much to his agent J. P. Barry’s chagrin—that he doesn’t need to be paid any more than Sidney Crosby on a five-year deal.

After Barry got through rending his garments at his client’s honesty, he thought about the opportunities staying in Pittsburgh might afford the young Russian in terms of competing for championships and came to the conclusion that as long as they limit the term to five years or the loss of just one year of unrestricted free agency, a deal near Crosby’s $8.7 million per season might be acceptable.

Take That Rangers Fan

from the Courier Post,

With about 5 minutes remaining in Sunday’s game against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden, Carter got tripped up by Brandon Dubinsky along the offensive right wing corner.

A Rangers fan in that section called for a dive and Carter turned back at him and smiled.

On the ensuing power play, Carter scored on a pass from Scottie Upshall and pointed to the fan behind the glass as if to say, “That one’s for you.”

“I had a buddy there in the corner heckling me,” Carter said. “So when I scored that goal I happened to turn that corner. I gave him a look and we had a good laugh. All in good fun.”

Jeff Carter Only Worried About On-Ice Play

from Philly Burbs,

Don’t show me the money. At least not yet. That’s the vibe Jeff Carter gives off when questioned about the possibility of beginning contract talks now, rather than wait for his three-year deal to expire in June….

He’s a restricted free agent, so there’s really no urgency to begin negotiations. Like Mike Richards and R.J. Umberger, whose contracts also run out in June, there’s no need for Carter to think about money now.

“There’s nothing I can do about it, just go out and play,” Carter said at Friday morning’s skate. “It doesn’t really matter to me.”

“Go on MySpace and type in anybody in this (locker) room and there will be someone posing,” said [Flyers’ center Jeff] Carter, who is single. “I have a friend who said she sent pictures to my MySpace and I don’t even have a MySpace. She said, ‘Oh, I’ve been talking to you for the past month and a half.’”

Umberger, who is married, went online and discovered there were four people posing as him on their own web pages. When he found that some were soliciting women, he had all four accounts canceled.

“They talk to girls on there like they’re me,” he said. “People out there think they’re talking to me and they’re asking, ‘Aren’t you married?’ It’s ridiculous. Everybody on this team has a fake one and people believe it.”

Young Flyers Doing Their Part

from Mike Brophy of the Hockey News,

But in the midst of a 6-1-0 start, the contributions of third-year pros Mike Richards and Jeff Carter should not be overlooked.

In fact, you could make the case their re-emergence as bona fide front line NHL talent has every bit as much to do with the Flyers becoming a force as anything else. Through seven games, Richards had five goals and nine points and was plus-4 while Carter had four goals, five points and was plus-6.

After disastrous sophomore seasons, it is safe to conclude they are back.
