Hudler May Have An Out Clause

Red Wings GM Ken Holland suggested to the Free Press’s Helene St. James that it’s entirely possible that Jiri Hudler may have an out-clause in his contract with Dynamo Moscow, and could choose to utilize it to return to Detroit after this season. As far as I know, Wings coach Mike Babcock has indeed kept in contact with Hudler, and his teammates have at least called from time to time to check in on him.
Dynamo’s still recovering from a stunning first-round ouster at the hands of Spartak, a fellow Moscow club, but Sport-Express’s Andrei Kuznetsov reports that, at this point, it’s former Red Wings defenseman Danny Markov and Swedish imports Linus Omark and Johan Harju are taking the vast majority of the flak for the team’s disappointing performance.

Hudler’s Transfer Approved

An IIHF investigation revealed that although Hudler’s agent had filed for salary arbitration with Detroit on his client’s behalf, Hudler never actually signed the filing notice himself.
This made the filing invalid, the IIHF ruled, allowing Hudler to sign with Dynamo Moscow.
The governing body also ruled that USA Hockey did not submit its appeal “within the formal deadlines provided by the IIHF.” USA Hockey now has seven days to appeal Wednesday’s decision.

IIHF Bans Hudler Fron Sanctioned Games

Peter Adler, the Edmonton-based Euro-hockey expert, passes on these items . . .
The International Ice Hockey Federation is refusing to grant Jiri Hudler his transfer card, which means he is not allowed to practice or play for his new team, Moscow Dynamo, reports Sovietski Sport.
Without this card, Hudler can’t play in any IIHF-sanctioned game. The Russian league is under the domain of the IIHF, hence Hudler’s current problem.
The IIHF’s stance is baffling to Alexander Medvedev, chief of the KHL, because both the Detroit Red Wings, Hudler’s NHL team, and the Czech federation have given permission to Hudler to play for Dynamo, according to Medvedev.

Red Wings general manager Ken Holland confirmed today that Jiri Hudler will earn $2.75 million in the first year of a two-year arbitration award and $3 million in the second year. Holland said he learned of the arbitration ruling on Saturday afternoon.
AdvertisementThe two sides had been working toward an agreement in the days leading up to the arbitration hearing and Holland was satisfied with the outcome.
“We thought we had a good chance to win a salary in the high 2s in year one, but based on the comparables, the second year was going to be a number in the 3s,” Holland said.
“He’s obviously going to Russia because it’s an opportunity for a financial windfall,” Holland said. “But right now his plans are to come back to the NHL and to come back to the Wings.”

Jiri Hudler is staying in Detroit rather than heading to Russia.
The Czech forward was awarded a two-year deal worth over US$5 million on Friday, a source told Sportsnet.

Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said this morning that he hasn’t yet received the arbiter’s decision, but made it clear that this ship has sailed. Hudler is playing in Russia next season.
“The story’s over. He’s going to play in Russia,’’ Holland said. “We’re waiting on the terms (of the salary arbitration case) he has to (honor) if and when he returns to the NHL.’’

Bill Daly On The Hudler/KHL Deal

In an e-mail to Sporting News Today, NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly wrote that Hudler lost his free agency rights when he elected salary arbitration on July 5.
“It continues to be our position that Hudler is contractually obligated to the Detroit Red Wings,” Daly wrote in an e-mail to SNT. “It’s just another example of the KHL having no regard for NHL contracts.”

Don’t Be Mad At Hudler

(Dan) Cleary said he spoke with Jiri Hudler, who is in the Czech Republic. As much as Cleary would like to see Hudler back with the Wings next season, he doesn’t blame him for signing a two-year deal worth about $10 million tax free with the Moscow Dynamo.
Hudler’s NHL arbitration hearing is scheduled for Thursday in Toronto and the Wings are seeking a two-year award.
“He doesn’t want people to be angry with him,” Cleary said. “I hope people aren’t.”
Cleary said Hudler was given an offer that was too great to pass up: “It would take him seven or eight years to make the kind of money he’ll make in two.”

Putting The Hudler Story To Bed

Wings general manager Ken Holland said today that the club will head to salary arbitration with forward Jiri Hudler on July 30 in Toronto. Hudler’s agent, Petr Svoboda, told Holland the 25-year-old left wing intends on playing in Russia next season.
“They have no intention of negotiating a settlement, they want the case heard before an arbitrator,’’ Holland said.
The NHL apparently will not be able to prevent Hudler from playing for Moscow Dynamo.
Hudler has made it clear he wants to play in the KHL, the Wings are not really fighting his decision so we can expect the end result, Hudler in the KHL and the Wings will add another forward by signing someone or making a trade.

In his first public statement on the international dispute over Detroit forward Jiří Hudler, K.H.L. president Alexander Medvedev sounded a conciliatory note, saying on Thursday that the Russian league would wait for an N.H.L. arbitrator’s decision on Hudler’s status with the Red Wings before registering the contract the player signed with Dinamo Moscow.

Holland said he spoke to Hudler’s agent today and the two sides plan to continue to talk over the next two weeks.
While Hudler’s actions suggest he no longer wants to play for the Wings, Holland said he would welcome him back into the fold and there would not be any animosity from management nor players toward Hudler.
“Jiri has tremendous respect for his teammates and the organization,” Holland said. “He was made an offer that, at this stage in his financial career, he couldn’t pass up. I don’t think it had anything to do with the hockey aspect. He was made a financial offer he couldn’t pass up.”

Wings Hands Are Tied

Take away the name and the number, and the Red Wings have an asset, worth 25 goals and about 55 points. They learned that they would not be able to employ that asset last week, and thus needed to immediately go about finding a way to replace those 25 goals and 55 points by signing either one or two players.
The NHL chose to make an issue of the asset’s availability, and as such, the NHL has tied Detroit’s hands regarding whether it can spend its money retaining the asset or replacing the asset, either via free agent replacements or trading said asset. The sooner that this issue can reach a conclusion, regardless of its result/resolution, the better for the Red Wings. That’s the bottom line.

K.H.L. president Alexander Medvedev struck a conciliatory tone toward the N.H.L. in an article in the Russian daily Sport-Express on Saturday, but he seemed to be speaking before Friday afternoon’s revelation that the N.H.L. is disputing the signing of Detroit free agent Jiri Hudler by Dinamo Moscow.
In the same Saturday issue of Sport-Express, Hudler explained the main reason why he left Detroit for Moscow. “At Dinamo,” the 25-year-old Czech forward said, “I’ll get something that I was not getting with the Red Wings: a lot of playing time and the opportunity to become a leader.”

Jiri Hudler remains property of the Detroit Red Wings and therefore the recent contract he signed in the KHL is being contested.
The National Hockey League has approached both the IIHF and KHL, seeking their intervention.
According to the NHL, Hudler is contractually obligated to the Red Wings for next season.

Thanks to a KK friend Roman for the translation of Hudler’s press conference…
In Detroit there is wasn’t place for me and I didn’t want to go to another club. So i didn’t ask for a trade. Then came Dynamo with their offer.
I started thinking about it and decided to go to Russia. It was tough but this is not a question of life or death. It is only hockey.
The KHL is good league. I should be one of the key players so it could help me in my career. I don’t think I will close the door to NHL. I am young and there are still 13 years until the end of my career. I want my career to be more colorful.
Hudler did say it is the most lucrative contract of his career and in two years he could return to the NHL.
He also said many people will question the move and he thought about it too before deciding to sign with Dynamo Moscow.
On a side note, Dynamo contacted him two years ago about joining them and he said he could not leave Detroit without winning the Stanley Cup.

The shot that should be remembered is Nicklas Lidstrom’s pouncing on his own rebound, miraculously alone in a shifting sea of bodies, and rifling the puck past Ducks goaltender Jonas Hiller with 49.1 seconds left in the third period to give the Detroit Red Wings a 3-2 victory Friday in the opener of the teams’ second-round playoff series.
The shot that will resonate for the remainder of this matchup between the last two Stanley Cup champions is Mike Brown’s first-period hit on Detroit’s Jiri Hudler, which left Hudler bleeding profusely from his forehead and the Red Wings furious over an infraction they believe merited more than the five-minute penalty and game misconduct Brown got.

Anaheim Ducks forward Mike Brown was ejected from Game 1 against the Detroit Red Wings for a hit that bloodied Jiri Hudler.
Hudler passed the puck and was defenceless when Brown hit him, appearing to land an elbow to his head during the first period on Friday night.
The game was delayed briefly while Hudler was helped off the ice and blood was scraped off it. A towel was pressed against a big cut above Hudler’s left eye.

It’s really up to the National Hockey League to decide what is it that they want to do. I think the NHL is going to look at it and say it’s a five-minute major, it happened midway through the first period, Mike Brown is out of this game, there was no severe injury to Hudler other than the blood, he came back and he’s playing, and the Ducks had to play with 11 forwards the rest of the game. There may not be a suspension in this case.

Mike Brown’s vicious blindside hit on Jiri Hudler left Hudler in a pool of blood and should, if there’s any consistency in Colin Campbell’s world, land Brown a five-game suspension just as it did Washington’s Donald Brashear for his hit on Blair Betts of the Rangers last week.

‘Rock Happy’ Hudler

Jiri Hudler is happy, almost always. Well, except when he’s rushing to get ready for practice and pops on his helmet without noticing someone loaded it with shaving cream. Or when he sticks his hands in his gloves and is greeted by a poof of baby powder. Or when his dress pants go missing and he has to leave the arena in his hockey Under Armours.
“There’s a couple guys, I won’t mention their names, but they got me really good the last few months,” Hudler said, smiling. “But this is the playoffs now. No more pranks.”
He said it like he meant it, sort of, with a tell-tale grin, not a tattle-tale grin. And then he laughed, which is something Hudler does often, which is why some call him “Happy Hudler,” which doesn’t make him particularly happy.
“Why not something tougher?” he said. “You should call me the Rock or something.”

Phaneuf put a big hit on Hudler last night in the 3rd period. Hudler had been agitating Dion most of the night and you just had a feeling Phaneuf was looking for the right opportunity to pay him back.
