from Paul Branecky at CarolinaHurricanes.com,
Defenseman Joni Pitkanen is set to undergo a minor knee procedure today to repair torn cartilage in his knee. The injury will sideline him for approximately 2-4 weeks.
According to Hurricanes’ Head Trainer and Strength and Conditoining Coach Pete Friesen, Pitkanen suffered the injury while doing leg presses in Finland over the summer. He attempted to skate through the discomfort at the RecZone earlier this week, but a later MRI showed a small tear.

The Canes are getting in their last practice at the RBC Center before heading West for two games in L.A.
How about this: Joni Pitkanen on a wing? The defenseman is on a line with Eric Staal and Ray Whitney and is in a forward’s white jersey today.

Pitkanen Has To Be The Man
by Paul on 09/15/08 at 12:20 PM ET

from John Forslund at WRAL,
On July 1 the Hurricanes pulled the trigger on a significant and emotional trade by shipping off Erik Cole to the Edmonton Oilers for Joni Pitkanen. The time for analyzing that one is long gone - it’s time to move forward.
For the Hurricanes to get where they want to be this season, this Finnish blue-liner will be a the focal point of it all. There was no question watching last year’s crew go through their set of 82, that the Canes were aching for that defensemen who could put it all together - handle an abundance of minutes, anchor the power play, kill penalties and defend in his own end by managing the puck out of trouble.
They believe they have their man in this 24 year-old Finn.

The Trouble with Pitkanen
by Alanah McGinley on 06/01/08 at 11:15 AM ET

From the Edmonton Journal,
“I think he can be a star ... you can see the potential he has, the icetime he gets. He never wants to come off, and the way he can skate,” said Oilers assistant coach Charlie Huddy, who looks after the blue-liners. “I think he’s only scratched the surface. His offence will come ... the creativity will come out. You’d like to see him take the puck to the net more, the way he can skate.”
That’s the rub with Pitkanen. He doesn’t get nearly enough points for his ability, although he did have 43 twice in Philadelphia. He had a meagre 26 last season here, albeit in only 63 games because he had a bad knee and sundry other smaller ailments. That put him in a tie for 50th amongst defencemen with David Johnny Oduya in New Jersey and James Wisniewski in Chicago. Hal Gill, who would lose a race with the Zamboni, had 24 points, if you’re counting. Pitkanen should be a 55-60-point defenceman, but he’s not. He might also be a shutdown defenceman because he can close people off with his skating but those sort of guys often have a physical edge to their game. Pitkanen doesn’t.

Pitkanen Injury Questioned
by Paul on 05/02/08 at 09:45 AM ET

from the Calgary Herald,
Finnish defenceman Joni Pitkanen pulled out of the IIHF world hockey championship with a knee injury, but he wasn’t getting a lot of sympathy from head coach Doug Sheddon.
“I wouldn’t put a gun to anyone’s head to play for their country,” said Sheddon, who is convinced the injury wasn’t all that serious.
“The commitment has to be better and I didn’t see a whole lot of commitment from him,” Sheddon said.

Sign Or Trade Pitkanen
by Paul on 01/27/08 at 08:42 AM ET

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,
In today’s escalating salary wars, Pitkanen could be a $5-million defenceman. “We really haven’t started into negotiations,” said his agent Larry Kelly, who says he’s been a moving target, tough to track down with other things going on.
Does Lowe want to go to $5 million for another defenceman? He’s already paying Souray a cap hit of $5.4 million, but he was an unrestricted free-agent and price was of little concern to get him last summer. Lowe’s going to have to bump up Gilbert a good deal.
If he gives Pitkanen $5 million, then that’s considerably more than his best three best forwards Shawn Horcoff, Ales Hemsky and Dustin Penner.
If you were Lowe would you be talking to Rutherford about, say, winger Erik Cole and a prospect? Would you be calling Dean Lombardi in L.A. and inquiring about Alex Frolov or Mike Cammalleri, if he gets back from his bruised ribs?

Pitkanen Has Something to Prove
by Paul on 10/06/07 at 06:47 AM ET

from the Courier-Post,
Tonight in Edmonton when the Flyers try to start the season 2-0 after Thursday’s 3-2 opening victory over Calgary, Pitkanen will face the Flyers for the first time in his career amid harsh criticism from the unlikeliest of sources: his former captain.
In a weekly column he is now writing for Montreal La Presse, former Flyers’ defenseman Eric Desjardins described Pitkanen as an immature player who refused help from his Flyers’ teammates.
“He has all the talent in the world, he’s strong as a horse and he’s as powerful a skater as Al Iafrate was, but he is also very immature,” Desjardins wrote.
