Theodore On Leave

Goalie Jose Theodore has returned to Washington for personal reasons, and the Caps have recalled Michal Neuvirth and Jay Beagle ahead of tonight’s game against the Rangers.

Neuvirth is here to back up Semyon Varlamov, and Beagle is here just in case David Steckel can’t go. Steckel took a teammate’s slap shot off the foot in practice yesterday and was last seen limping off the ice at Prudential Center.

As far as Theodore’s situation, I don’t have any details at the moment.

“Like I said last year at the end of the playoffs, now there’s no doubt that Varly and [Michal] Neuvirth are the goalies of the future. They are great goalies.  But for myself, if you look at the season, out of 82 games I still played [57] and had a pretty good record and was pretty consistent toward the end.”

“I don’t see myself as a backup.  My frame of mind was to enter the summer, my off-ice training and the season as the No. 1 guy. [Whether] or not that was the case, that was going to be my approach. We all know in hockey, No. 1 is only a title. It’s still on the ice that you have to earn your points.”

All Eyes On Theodore

Of all the concerns surrounding the Capitals’ feasibility as a real contender—maturity, toughness, the psychological wound from being one-and-done against the Philadelphia Flyers a year ago—No. 1 is Theodore’s inconsistency. It’s why the Rangers have just one on-paper advantage heading into this series—Henrik Lundqvist in goal.

Again, Theodore doesn’t have to be what Arturs Irbe was to San Jose 15 years ago; that otherworldly goalie, making out-of-body experiences a reality on ice.

But more than even a hard-checking opponent or a stingy goalie across the ice, Theodore can stop Ovie and a hungry Capitals team from going as far as they want to this postseason. If they have real designs on Lord Stanley, it’s up to the guy in goal. This postseason is on him.

Theodore Is The Question Mark

The biggest question facing the Washington Capitals as they prepare to open the Eastern Conference first round against the New York Rangers is whether José Theodore can catch fire after an uneven regular season in which he temporarily lost his starting job.

Playing behind the league’s third-best offense but an inexperienced team that’s prone to exposing its goaltender to prime scoring chances, Theodore won 32 games this season, second only to his 33 victories with the Montreal Canadiens in 2003-04. In every other category by which goaltenders are judged, however, the 32-year-old’s statistics were unimpressive despite a second-half rebound.

Theodore Talks Avs

The Avalanche will take some shots tonight at its former goalie, Jose Theodore. A day before their game with the Washington Capitals, Theodore took a few preemptive verbal shots at the Avs.

After Thursday’s Capitals practice, Theodore was asked if he misses playing for the Avalanche.

“Look at the position I’m in now and where my game has been for the past two months. I think that pretty much speaks for itself,” Theodore said.

Study The Rule Book

Jose Theodore didn’t know the rule, and neither did Coach Bruce Boudreau. So here it is: No. 25.2, which states, “No goal can be scored on a rebound of any kind (an exception being the puck off the goal post or crossbar, then the goalkeeper and then directly into the goal).

So that’s why Ryan Callahan’s decisive in penalty shots on Wednesday was allowed to stand after it hit the crossbar, bounced off an unsuspecting Jose Theodore and back into the net.

Theodore said it’s a lesson learned.

“To be honest, I thought when it hit the crossbar, when it comes back out that it was a no play,” he said. “So I didn’t really ... I didn’t know where the puck was, but I knew it wasn’t going in. I didn’t really try to get out of the way because to me it was a no goal. Obviously, I was wrong. It’s a lesson I learned.”

A Look At Jose Theodore

“I saw the two sides of playing in Montreal,” he said. “For most of my career, I think it was great. I had some great years there, obviously. The fans were really supportive. But when things are not going well, it’s the other way around. It’s tougher to kind of focus. There’s a lot of distractions around the game, and the last year I was there I had a really tough time because it seemed like everything was falling on my head.”

There is less pressure here, the critics more a source of motivation than a hindrance.

Theodore Day-to-Day With Hip Flexor

Here’s the latest on the Caps’ goalie situation. You might want to take a seat.

Jose Theodore is, in fact, hurt. He is day-to-day with a hip flexor. I’m not sure when this injury happened.

The Caps have summoned Simeon Varlamov from Hershey and he hopes to arrive from Houston in time to be on the Caps’ bench by the second period. He’ll backup Brent Johnson. Eventually.

Theodore Will Only Get Better

Theodore’s recent track record is nowhere near as consistent as Ovechkin’s, but he is through the hard part of the acclimation process now and the Caps are still leading the Southeast Division. From here on out, he’ll continue to build a rapport with the Caps defensemen when he plays pucks in his own zone. He’ll start to put the nerves behind him and start to eliminate those soft goals. And he’ll benefit from an improved defensive corps.

Theodore Is The Key

As the only new member of the organization, (Jose) Theodore will have to endure scrutiny this season. But toss in the position he plays and the great expectations for the franchise, and Theodore could be the linchpin for success or the scapegoat for failure.

Being a goaltender in places like Montreal and Colorado, Theodore knows all about that type of pressure. He also knows what the intense media scrutiny was like with the Canadiens - both on and off the ice - and is looking forward to settling in and being comfortable in the District.

Washington Was Theodore’s First Choice

“Alex Ovechkin just called me to say we have a great group of guys,” Théodore said during his introductory news conference yesterday at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. “We like to have fun, win and work hard. When he said that, I knew I made the right choice.”

Théodore also revealed that he delayed re-signing with the Colorado Avalanche because he suspected that Cristobal Huet might not return to Washington. When Huet bolted to the Chicago Blackhawks, Theodore quickly agreed to a two-year, $9 million contract on July 1.

Don Meehan, the agent for former Avs goalie Jose Theodore and current left winger Ryan Smyth, is one of the good guys in the business....

Today, I spoke with him on the phone about the situation that went down with Theodore and the Avs....

As Meehan said, “Both sides were in a position to make the choices they made. And that’s what happened. I don’t think there’s anybody “at fault” here. It’s just what both parties decided was in their best interest.”

True enough. It’s nothing personal, just business. I know that, and am not trying to take sides. I just personally still find it weird at how the whole thing ended.

Is Theodore The Answer

GM George McPhee deserves credit for acting swiftly in securing Plan B, but, if I’m a Caps fan, it’s going to be a while before I find a comfort level with the team’s new No. 1 man.

We all know Theodore, still young at 31, has the physical composition to be one of the league’s best stoppers. His Hart and Vezina trophies in 2002 are testaments to his skill.

It’s the ensuing years that would have me nervous. His plunge in Colorado, and accompanying off-ice distractions, had some thinking he was playing himself out of the league.

Keep in mind a couple things: 1, I don’t know what the Avs’ exact offer was/is to Theodore before talks broke off and 2, it’s pro sports, where everybody wants the most money they can get while they can get it - and I’m sure I’d be the same way if I was a pro athlete.

But, let’s face it: If the Avs made anywhere near a fair, market-value offer to retain his services, but Theodore turned it down thinking he could get a little more from someone else, then my attitude if I was Francois Giguere would be: don’t let the door hit your padded backside on the way out, Jose.

Contract talks between the Avalanche and Jose Theodore haven’t necessarily broken down, but the parties have hit a snag in their discussions.

Theodore’s agent, Don Meehan, said Thursday that the 31-year-old goalie probably would enter the NHL’s open market on July 1 as an unrestricted free agent.

Is a deal between the Avalanche and goalie Jose Theodore imminent? Judging by the words of Theodore’s agent, Don Meehan, that seems possible.

“I think things could accelerate quickly,” Meehan said Monday.

Theodore will meet with Meehan today at the agent’s Mississauga, Ontario, office to discuss what Meehan said was a contract offer by the Avalanche.

Theodore Steals One

In the realm of Jose Theodore, time, speed and distance have no relevance. He is on his own, in the moment, in his area of interest. There are no sounds, no distractions, no blurs, no vague impressions.

It’s myspace.net, Theodore believes. It belongs to him and nobody else.

“If you are focused properly,” Jose Theodore says, “you don’t see time go by.”

And pucks don’t go past him.

The Avalanche goalie has played brilliantly in this playoff series with Minnesota. But, on Thursday night, Theodore was a virtuoso performer of the highest order.

Theodore Showing Signs Of #1 Goalie

Tattoos cover roughly half of Jose Theodore’s upper body. They are elaborately stenciled works, some in dedication to his wife and daughter. Some seem to just signify rock ‘n’ roll cool associated with his hobby of strumming a guitar away from the hockey rink.

Winning has a funny way of making players seem cool again. Theodore’s locker stall has been bereft of reporters much of the past couple of seasons with the Avalanche, but has become a crowded place again. There is much more notice, therefore, of the intricacies of those tattoos — along with anything else on his body, or mind.

Avs Have Been Up & Down

Some days, they’re in a playoff spot. Some days, they’re out of it, period.

“I think we’re a ways away from finding out how good we are,” Avalanche coach Joel Quenneville said this week. “I don’t think we’ve had any consistency at the top of our game to clarify that identity and find out how good we can be. We’ve had some stretches where we’ve been good and sporadic games where we’ve been at our best. It’s still a motivation to be able to capture that at a consistent level.”

Some of the Avalanche’s problems, but not all of them, can be laid at the crease of goalies Jose Theodore and Peter Budaj, who have been so-so at best and often worse.

Rotating Goalies Working For Avs

Colorado takes a 10-5 record into tonight’s game at Vancouver, with Budaj having six of the wins to the four for Theodore, tonight’s starter. The two have alternated starts the past six games and, while Quenne- ville said the rotation might not stay equal for various reasons, he sees no reason to change things now.

“I just think both guys are playing pretty well, and keep ‘em both playing,” Quenneville said. “I think it’s competitive among the two of them. I think it’s healthy, but I think there’s a genuine sincerity that the other guy does well. Both guys had an opportunity to get the net at the start of the year, and they’re both doing what we were hoping they’d do.”

Theodore Has Been Solid

Another solid performance tonight, and Jose Theodore could suddenly find himself as the Avalanche’s new No. 1 goalie.

Avs coach Joel Quenneville did not say as much Sunday, but he probably didn’t need to. What is fact, however, is that Quenneville will start Theodore against the Calgary Flames tonight at the Pepsi Center.

“Jose’s been solid,” Quenne- ville said. “He’s confident, he’s composed, he’s challenging (shooters) and controlling rebounds and fighting through to find pucks. You can just see the confidence in his overall game.”

Theodore Starts Tonight

Six weeks after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery, Avalanche goalie Jose Theodore will make his regular- season debut tonight.

He will start against the St. Louis Blues at the Scottrade Center in a game that could set the tone for the kind of season it will be for him and for the Avalanche.

“It’s good to be back in,” he said Thursday. “It was a long rehab, but it’s fun to get the start. I’m anxious to get out there and help the team.”

Jose Theodore’s Knee Ready for NHL Duty

“The rest is up to the coach. I’m just waiting for my start, my chance. There’s no pain - everything is feeling really good. I feel as strong as ever. It was hot in the building, too, so I could test my conditioning. I wanted to make sure that, when I play here, I was ready.”

Theodore skated for about a week before training camp when he felt pain in his knee. A magnetic resonance imaging exam revealed a tear under the kneecap, and he underwent arthroscopic surgery Aug. 29.

It was an unexpected setback for Theodore, coming off a 13-15-1 season and begins 2007-08 as Peter Budaj’s backup with plenty to prove in the final year of a contract that pays him $6 million.

Theodore Wants His Status Back

But the Avalanche’s 31-year- old goalie first needs to recover from the arthroscopic knee surgery he underwent Aug. 29 after a magnetic resonance imaging test revealed a problem.

Theodore called the surgery “a minor thing” and said there’s no specific timetable for when he can play in a preseason game. He’s concentrating on rehabilitation while maintaining his conditioning.

“I’m making good progress,” he said. “I’m anxious to put the equipment on.”

After watching Peter Budaj start 39 of the final 46 games last season, Theodore also is eager to prove he’s capable of being an elite goalie again.

“I’m looking forward to regaining the status I had,” he said.
