It Appears Weekes Days In New Jersey Are Over

from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,
Kevin Weekes said he’s not closing the door a return to the Devils, but the 34-year-old goaltender admits that he probably won’t be re-signing with the team.
“That’s the way it’s looking,” he said today via telephone from Toronto. “You never know in pro sports, but right now that’s the way it looks.”
So, it appears as if Yann Danis or rookie Jeff Frazee will be the Devils’ backup goaltender in 2009-10. Although Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello left the door open for Weekes to return when he signed Danis on July 10, the sides have not been able to reach an agreement and Weekes is exploring other opportunities.
“There’s other opportunities, but it’s also just looking at a lot of different factors,” he said. “Like Lou always says, free agency is always an interesting thing. It’s an inexact science. You can’t always retain all of your free agents and in my case I fulfilled my obligation. I think I brought a lot of value to the role and I played my role with pride, even though I didn’t get to play as much hockey as I would have liked to have played even when Marty (Brodeur) was injured.

Attracting A New Audience

from Steve Politi of the Star-Ledger,
The Devils have a new starting goaltender for the first time in 15 years, which is major news in the NHL that no doubt barely created a ripple on the streets surrounding the team’s new arena. Even in their second season in downtown Newark, the Devils sometimes feel like they were dropped in from another planet. Would it be any different if residents found out that new goalie was black?
Would that matter?
Kevin Weekes considered that question Tuesday and decided that, well, it couldn’t hurt. He is an outspoken advocate for diversity in his sport who will take a major role on a team struggling to make inroads in a mostly black city. He is living proof that hockey, despite its reputation, excludes no one.

from insideToronto,
It was an emotional homecoming for former Regent Park resident and current Philadelphia Flyer Glen Metropolit, as he and New Jersey Devil Kevin Weekes dropped by the Wellesley Community Centre to sign autographs and make a special announcement last Friday.
The duo’s visit was part of the National Hockey League Players’ Association’s Goals and Dreams program, in which the NHLPA donates hockey equipment to children and youth in at-risk communities. Last week’s donation saw 110 new sets of equipment donated to help programs in Regent Park, St. James Town and elsewhere in the city.
The gesture was extremely meaningful for Metropolit, who choked up while speaking to the crowd of youngsters assembled from local camps and organizations.
continued and the NHLPA has a nice feature on Metropolit too…

From Thomas LaRocca at NHL.com:
“I was nervous,” O’Ree said of his taping. “I was more nervous than in my NHL debut. I had my lines all down pat and then they changed the script and then changed it again.
“This was my first acting appearance and it was fun; but I would much rather be on the ice playing hockey.”
Spoken like a true hockey player.
Also appearing in the episode was New Jersey Devils goaltender Kevin Weekes. He was also in the scene with O’Ree, helping the two main characters, Drew and Chris, with directions to see the New York Islanders play Wayne Gretzky’s Edmonton Oilers in the early 1980s.
Thanks to Steve for giving me the heads up. This episode of Everybody Hates Chris airs on the CW network, March 30th. A preview is available below:

Weekes Hopes To Be A Link To Newark Community

from the NY Post,
A black Toronto native whose parents immigrated to Canada from Barbados, Weekes envisions the marvelous new arena invigorating the strife-stricken city and its residents. With Newark’s largely black population, not hockey’s usual fan demographic, Weekes hopes he can provide a link to the community.
“I’d like to think I can make a positive contribution, and when you have people who contribute positively, they are ambassadors,” Weekes said. “It’s extremely important for the sport, too, at the end of the day. We want to have as many different people, ages and demographics as possible among our fans.”
