Maltby Knows The End Is Getting Closer

from Chris McCosky of the Detroit News,
“I know I am a lot closer to the end than I am the beginning,” he said after a conditioning skate Thursday. “But this isn’t something I am going to address this year. I love playing. I love coming to the rink. Listen, if my career would have ended two or three years ago I wouldn’t have had any regrets.
“But I am going to just see how things hold up from a physical standpoint; see how I feel injury-wise. There’s always going to be a time (to leave); everyone has to move on. Whether it’s after this year for me, we’ll see.”
To measure Maltby’s on-ice effectiveness by his statistics is to completely miss the point of his value. He’s a grinder, a dependable defensive-minded winger who’s has long been on of the game’s effective pests

From Chris Johnston at the CP:
“When you lose a series, the last thing you want to do is congratulate the other team or wish them good luck,” said veteran Detroit forward Kirk Maltby. “But it’s kind of the nature of the beast. It’s just part of our sport and something that’s carried over.
“I think it’s one of the few things that we do that maybe other sports don’t.”
Cooke can think of at least one where it does.
“You can go to one of the roughest games that’s out there in rugby and they do it after every game,” he said. “And most times they’re going for beers after with each other.
“They put their egos aside and know that they’re out there trying to win. That’s what it’s about.”

“I think they are letting a few things go that maybe were called during the regular season, but I like it this way. This allows a lot more battles. You can see it out there. Guys are able to fight for the puck.
“As a player, a fan or a coach, all you ask is that it’s called equally both ways, and I think they’ve done a great job of that. It’s fun. It’s not back to what it was in the eighties or seventies, but it’s nice that you can go in and guys are fighting for the puck, or you’re in front of the net, and there are some battles. That’s the way it should be at this time of year.”
-Kirk Maltby of the Detroit Red Wings on the officiating during the SCF. More on this topic from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail.

Paul is at the NHL’s media event in Detroit (for which we’re hosting the live video feed on the previous post).
This post will be an open forum from the event, to add photos he sends in and links to audio he’ll be posting on NHL.com later today.
Updates will be added below throughout the day, with Wings stuff coming in first since the Penguins aren’t yet available. To start, I’ve put up a couple screenshots from video he’s shot today so far…

from Bob Duff of the Windsor Star,
For more than a decade, they’ve filled a valuable role as defensively-dominant forwards who not only shut down the opposition, but drive them to distraction with their agitating antics.
After Draper and Maltby, the National Hockey League’s longest-running forward tandem is the New Jersey checking pair of John Madden and Jay Pandolfo.
They’ve been an item since 1999.
Draper and Maltby were first united three years earlier, embarking upon a relationship that is as symbiotic as it is long-standing.
“A brother from another mother,” is how Draper describes Maltby, his teammate for a dozen years and linemate for the vast majority of that time.

From Bruce MacLeod of The Macomb Daily,
Kris Draper’s knee sprain will keep him out of the lineup for 10 days to two weeks. Today, he could just ice the knee and sit in the sauna.
Kirk Maltby (shoulder) didn’t practice. His status is unknown for Thursday.
