Afternoon Line

“Three, four or five times a game he will do things with the puck better than anybody.  Offensively, when given time, he’s the smartest player we have. But the game is played without the puck, and you need the strength to defend, to go into the corner.”

-Coyotes GM Don Maloney on Kyle Turris.  More on Turris from Kevin Allen of Mucking and Grinding.

In other Coyotes news, Ryan Hollweg signed a 1yr contract with them today.

Bobby Ryan Talks Kyle Turris

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,

“I’ve played against Kyle numerous times and I’ve seen him play, he’s going to have a heck of a career,” Anaheim Ducks rookie Bobby Ryan told ESPN.com. “Depending on how long he’s down there, he’s going to be able to learn to be a pro in a less stressful environment and that’s certainly going to do nothing but good things for him.”

Ryan, who has exploded with a huge rookie season since his mid-November call-up from the AHL, understands how Turris may be feeling right now, given the high expectations. Turris went third overall in the 2007 NHL draft, while Ryan went second overall in 2005. Be patient, Ryan’s advice was to Turris.

“I think it’s a very important step to take, to spend some time in the minor leagues,” continued Ryan, who turns 22 next month. “You learn a little bit about yourself and you learn a little bit about yourself as a player. There’s ups and downs with that. It’s emotional. You want to play at the highest level, but there is a time frame that you spend down there [in the AHL] and you get to breathe a little easier and certainly progress.”

Versteeg Awaits Suspension News

From TSN:

The Chicago Blackhawks are awaiting word from the NHL on whether rookie forward Kris Versteeg will be suspended for one game and head coach Joel Quenneville fined $10,000 for Versteeg being assessed an instigator penalty in the final seconds of last night’s 7-1 win over Phoenix.

NHL rules call for an automatic one-game suspension for the player and a $10,000 fine to his coach for any player who instigates a fight in the final five minutes of a game, but the league reviews each one case-by-case and, in some instances, rescinds the suspension and fine.

Update 3:52pm ET: From TSN, Versteeg suspended one game and Quenneville fined $10,000.

Another ‘KK’ Blog

from Kyle Turris of Kyle’s Korner at PhoenixCoyotes.com,

After that game, we flew back home for a two-game homestand and now we’re back on the road. We flew into Carolina last night and it was a pretty long flight, just under four hours. Teeks (Viktor Tikhonov) and I played Tiger Woods ‘09 on our PSPs against each other. It’s a fun game and we have some great battles.

Later on this trip we go into New York. I’ve never been, so I’m really looking forward to that. I’ve heard it’s a great place. One of my friends from Wiconsin is a die-hard Rangers fan, and she’s flying back for the game, so it’ll be nice to see her and make her root for us instead.

Welcome To The NHL

from Lew Serviss of Slap Shot at the NY Times,

Kyle Turris stepped onto the ice at the Phoenix Coyotes’ practice Tuesday and took his first strides as an NHL player....

Centering the Coyotes’ most skilled forwards, Turris flew up and down the ice, dispensing passes, finding lanes and roofing the puck by goalie Ilya Bryzgalov. Mueller looked skyward. (“That’s why he was drafted third over all,” he said later.)

Off the ice, a beaming veteran of one NHL practice, Turris faced his first NHL media scrum.  “It’s a mix of emotion,” he said, “from losing in the final 8 to the next morning, I’m talking here, and the next night I’m in here. It’s been crazy. I’m so excited I can’t even talk right now.”

Phoenix Signs Turris

from the Phoenix Coyotes,

Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have signed center Kyle Turris to an entry level contract. As per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Turris was selected by the Coyotes with the third overall choice in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.  Earlier this month, he was ranked as the second-best NHL prospect in The Hockey News’ annual “Future Watch” edition.

“We are very excited to sign Kyle and have him join the Coyotes organization,” said Maloney.  “He is a very talented player and is a big part of our future.  By adding him to the roster, we hope to give him valuable experience that will help him heading into next season and beyond.”

Turris On Schedule

from Terry Frei at ESPN,

Turris has enlisted Denver-based player agent Kurt Overhardt as a “family advisor” and said he hears “from a couple of guys in the organization quite a bit—text messages and that sort of thing. We’ve kept in contact and they’re letting me have a good time.”

But for how long?

Coyotes GM Don Maloney said last week that Turris “is right on schedule. He’s played well for Wisconsin, and it’s been a great experience for him playing against more mature players. He was one of the go-to players with Team Canada, the top center on the top line, so we’re really pleased with what he’s done to date.”
