Wellwood Out With Broken Toe

via Jason Botchford of the White Towel,
The Canucks will have to start trying to avoid black cats and ladders because they can’t seem to catch a break.
Just as one player, Mathieu Schneider, is ready to come off the injury list today, Kyle Wellwood has to be put on. Wellwood suffered a broken toe after he blocked a Mike Komisarek slap shot with the big toe on his right foot.
Wellwood is expected to miss three weeks. To replace him, the Canucks have recalled Sergei Shirokov, who led the Moose in score with 10 points in 10 games, including four goals.

Wellwood Heads To Arbitration
by Paul on 07/28/09 at 07:10 AM ET

from Brad Ziemer of the Vancouver Sun,
Six years ago, then Vancouver Canuck centre Brendan Morrison went to salary arbitration and had to listen while the team’s lawyer compared him to a mouse that was riding the back of an elephant (actually, two, named Markus Naslund and Todd Bertuzzi).
Yes, things can get nasty in arbitration, so current Canuck centre Kyle Wellwood can expect to hear all about his conditioning struggles and the lengthy 21-game goal drought he endured last season when he sits down at his own arbitration hearing with the Canucks Tuesday in Toronto.
It’s the nature of the process. Wellwood’s camp, led by agent Mike Liut, will accentuate the positives of his inaugural season in Vancouver, while the Canucks, with assistant general manager Laurence Gilman in charge, will point out some of the flaws in Wellwood’s game.
Gilman acknowledged the process is not one that either side particularly relishes.

Wellwood Shaping-Up Just Fine

from Terry Jones of the Edmonton Sun,
When the season started he was known locally as “Kyle Well-fed.”
Nobody was projecting the former Toronto Maple Leaf to be a Stanley Cup hero in Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinal, much less acknowledged by coach Alain Vigneault as “our best player.”

Pushing Wellwood
by Paul on 02/19/09 at 05:37 PM ET

from Canucks Nation at the Vancouver Province,
Alain Vigneault told the rest of the world how he felt about Kyle Wellwood after Tuesday’s game.
So, it shouldn’t be a surprise that he let Wellwood in on this Thursday morning at practice — he’s not happy.
“I’m not here to be liked. I’m here to get the most out of him,and that’s what I’m trying to do.” Vigneault said. “As a coach you have to push the right buttons. Some guys need to be pushed a little harder, some guys need to be handled differently. Kyle needs to be pushed and that’s what I’m doing.”

You Have To Bury Those Kyle
by Paul on 02/18/09 at 08:24 AM ET

from Scott Cruickshank at Flames Insider,
After stunning saves on RW Steve Bernier (left pad) and C Mats Sundin (glove), Kiprusoff had needed to lunge to his right when puck squirted over to Wellwood. The shot, seemingly into an empty net, was batted away by the back of the Flames netminder’s paddle.
Great save, right?
“Kyle got what he deserves,” said Vigneault. “I mean, he is not bearing down and had an open net. He’s shooting the puck two miles an hour. You have to bear down, you have to put your full weight into it, you have to shoot it. He might have been standing there a little bit. Obviously, it looked like the goalie made a big save, but the player didn’t have a great attempt there.”

Get In Shape Wellwood

from the Canucks Nation Blog at the Vancouver Province,
Canucks coach Alain Vigneault didn’t say Kyle Wellwood is a lost cause but he did leave some tread marks on the waiver-wire pickup after he drove the bus over him.
AV took direct aim at Wellwood’s fitness level after the two-day training camp in Whislter.
“His commitment to conditioning and being a professional athlete probably wasn’t where it needed to be for him to have success,” said Vigneault. “His test results showed from early July [to training camp] significant improvements. That being said, it’s still not NHL calibre.”
Ouch. And that wasn’t the only shot that Wellwood absorbed.

Report- No Contract Offer For Wellwood
by Paul on 06/24/08 at 06:32 AM ET

from David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail,
Wellwood, 25, will be a restricted free agent on July 1. He will then quickly become an unrestricted free agent, although Fletcher, the Leafs’ interim general manager, declined to confirm that yesterday. However, a source close to the team said there are no plans to offer Wellwood a contract.
It could be that Wellwood’s NHL career will end after just three seasons, which would be ironic.

Wellwood Relaxed This Summer - Maybe Too Much
by Paul on 09/23/07 at 11:13 PM ET

from the National Post via the Ottawa Citizen,
After Wellwood missed 33 games with a sports hernia last season, head coach Paul Maurice instructed the third-year forward to hit the weights and get stronger this summer.
According to Wellwood’s father, the 24-year-old took a different approach.
“He likes to take the time off to rest himself mentally,” Rick Wellwood said in a telephone interview yesterday. “In the past, that has worked for him. But maybe he’s now going to have to do more in the summer; he’ll decide to take care of himself better when he decides to do that.”
