The Outlook For Pens & B’s Without Gonchar & Savard

And just like that, the picture changed for a pair of Eastern Conference contenders Wednesday with the news the Pittsburgh Penguins had lost their top minute man and the Boston Bruins their top offensive weapon.
But just how badly will the injuries to Pens defenseman Sergei Gonchar (broken wrist) and Bruins center Marc Savard (broken foot), both out four to six weeks, affect each club?
Let’s start with the Penguins. After all, they are the Stanley Cup champions.
Yes, we all know how badly they missed Gonchar last season when the All-Star blueliner missed the first 56 games of the season. They were basically a .500 team and on the playoff bubble. He later returned and the Penguins went on a tear all the way to the Promised Land.
I’m not discounting what the 35-year-old defenseman brings to this team. He’s their best defenseman, their top puck-mover, the key to their transition game, their best defensive shut-down guy, and, of course, their power-play quarterback. But I believe Kris Letang and Alex Goligoski are better equipped to handle some of that load than they were when Gonchar went down in September 2008.

Savard On LTIR With Broken Foot

BOSTON, MA - Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced today that the club has placed forward Marc Savard on long term injured reserve (broken left foot) and has recalled forward Trent Whitfield from Providence on an emergency basis.
Savard is expected to miss four to six weeks with the injury. He has led the Bruins in scoring each of the last three years and currently leads the team in scoring this year, with 4-3=7 totals in seven games. In 2008-09, Savard played in all 82 games with a 25-63=88 line

Savard Wants To Remain A Bruin, Not Happy With Team Canada Snub

Savard was the B’s leading scorer with 25 goals and 63 assists last season, and has blossomed into an All-Star player under coach Claude Julien. Entering the final year of his $5 million per year deal with a great deal of financial uncertainty in the NHL’s future, Savard isn’t bothered by the unknown and is simply focused on driving the B’s toward a Stanley Cup….
“It’s a great city and I’ve enjoyed my time here so far,” said Savard, from the Bruins Foundation’s annual golf tournament at The International in Bolton, MA. “It’s a place that I’d like to finish if the chance comes and I’m excited to get the season going. Things keep getting better and our team keeps getting better, so that only helps everybody when that happens. I want to stay here. This is a place I love. I love the people. I love the fans. This is where I want to be.
“I’m not worried about the contract at all. (Peter and I) have a good relationship. Ever since I came to Boston I’ve given everything I had and if things work out well — and I think they will — then I’m going to be here for a long, long time.”
Savard was also visibly peeved when asked about getting snubbed by Hockey Canada when team officials announced the lineup for their Olympic Team Orientation Camp this summer.

Don’t Move Savard

He’s averaged just under 90 points a year over the past four seasons. He’s led the Bruins in scoring in each of his three seasons in Boston and earned All-Star nods in each of the last two years.
Oh, and he owns a no-trade clause as well.
So, why does Marc Savard’s name keep coming up in trade rumors this offseason?
Such is life in the salary cap era.

Marc Savard- Hart Worthy

...Julien recently reacted as if a reporter had tossed him a hot brick when he asked if center Marc Savard was a leading candidate for this year’s Hart Trophy that goes to the regular season’s most valuable player.
Julien hates bragging more than he hates turnovers, but he still gave Savard his due, albeit a little reluctantly.
“Oh, you’re not going to get me to talk about those things,” Julien said, laughing. “I think he deserves a lot of credit for what he’s done so far this year, there’s no doubt about that.
“But really, we’ve pushed all those things aside as a group and we’ve focused on team accomplishments. If that happens, so be it, but we’re just trying to stay away from all that kind of stuff.”
Yet, the credentials for a Hart candidacy are there.
Savard, Boston’s first-line center, leads the NHL with a plus-29 rating and is tied for third with 38 assists. His 52 points place him fourth in NHL scoring. Savard has 17 multiple-point games, including a high of four points on Dec. 18, an 8-5 home victory against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Savard Can Play

In the pressbox at the Calgary Saddledome a week ago, longtime Flames followers were astonished by the play of Bruins [team stats] center Marc Savard, reacting with true incredulity.
“Did you see that?” one asked. “Marc Savard just hit someone.”
“He’s on the penalty-kill,” another said in amazement.
“He’s actually back-checking,” added a third.
The times they are a changin’ for Savard, who in his early 30s has evolved into a far more honest and complete player than he was in his first several seasons in the NHL.

Bruins Working On The Cap

“We need to put the best team on the ice that’s available,” said Julien, whose team must cut eight more players from the current group. “Somehow we’ve got to make it work.”
It’s hard to see how that’s possible, unless a fairly significant trade happens to shake up the roster, something Chiarelli has not ruled out. League sources have been saying for some time that the Bruins are active in the trade market, with some talk of a possible blockbuster deal involving top scorer Marc Savard - although the center has a no-trade contract and would have to agree to any swap.
“That wouldn’t surprise me,” the same agent said of the Savard talk. “It’s been floating around for a while.”

Savard Feels Ready For Game 1

“Felt great,” said Savard. “It’s getting better every day. It’s going along good.”
Savard missed the last seven games of the regular season because of the injury, which came courtesy of a Steve Begin cross-check. Savard said he hopes to practice today with teammates.
“I’m going to hopefully see action right away,” Savard said of a possible Game 1 return. “I’ve been doing everything I can. I’ve been resting on the couch. I’ve been resting every day.”

Savard Hopes To Be Ready For The Playoffs

Savard said he might have been willing to take pain-killing shots so he could play in last night’s regular-season finale against Buffalo if the B’s had needed a win to make the playoffs. It’s likely he’ll need an injection if he wants to play in Game 1 on Wednesday or Thursday, just 17 or 18 days after the injury.
“Well, it’s just a tough area where I have the injury, it’s kind of dangerous taking a shot,” he said. “But I’ll do whatever it takes to get in the lineup. There’s lungs around there and other things that come into play, but we’ve talked about it. I’m for it if it’s going to help me be better.”
If and when Savard plays in the postseason, it will be a first in his 10-year career. He has played 659 regular-season games but zero in the playoffs.

Report- Not A Bad Broken Back

According to a well-placed team source, Bruins [team stats] leading scorer Marc Savard suffered a broken bone in his back when he was cross-checked Saturday in Montreal by the Canadiens’ Steve Begin.
The cracked bone is called a transverse process, one that protrudes from a vertabra and serves as an attachment point for muscles and ligaments. An Internet search for information regarding the problem suggested the injury might not be all that severe.

Savard Has CT Scan

Veteran Bruins center Marc Savard, cracked across the back Saturday night by a Steve Begin crosscheck in Montreal, underwent a CT scan today at Mass. General Hospital and will not be in the lineup tomorrow night when the Bruins face the Maple Leafs in Toronto.
Head coach Claude Julien confirmed the CT scan after today’s workout here at Ristuccia Center, but he was unsure of the results. Julien did not reveal why Savard needed the exam, but CT skans typically are given when there is a suspicion of a broken bone.

Bruins center Marc Savard, tied for 12th in the NHL in scoring, will miss the club’s next two games, following a CT scan today at Massachusetts General Hospital that confirmed an unspecified injury to his lower back and mid-torso.

My place is just outside the city in Charlestown – or ‘Chucktown’ as it is called here. I live close to three of my teammates; Marc Savard, Jeremy Reich and Mark Stuart. Because of our close proximity, we always carpool to practice in the morning (our practice rink is about 25 minutes north of Boston).
Every morning we’ll discuss what’s going on around the league, who won games the night before and what our schedule looks like coming up.

Marc Savard Conference Call Transcript

Earlier today, Marc Savard of the Boston Bruins participated in a teleconference for the NHL. Since the start of the ‘05, ‘06 season Marc has recorded 179 assists placing him in third in the NHL over that timeframe behind San Jose Joe Thornton with 228 and Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby with 190.
Here is the transcript of today’s Q&A session.
Q. Two questions actually. The first one is about the game on NBC Sunday. Just curious. Do you guys—I think it’s hard to say that you could get up more for one game than the other, but do you notice that the game’s on national TV and does it strike your awareness before the game, you know, the hype surrounding a national televised game or anything like that?

Boston Bruins centre Marc Savard has been chosen to the NHL’s Eastern Conference All-Star team in place of injured Ottawa forward Dany Heatley.
Heatley suffered a separated shoulder in Saturday’s 3-2 victory over Detroit and will be out of action for 4-6 weeks.

When Marc Savard was left off the Eastern Conference All-Star team again last week, there weren’t shouts of outrage from many corners. Even Savard, who took last year’s snub fairly hard, simply shrugged and moved on this time around.
But in his second season with the Bruins [team stats] after signing a four-year, $20 million deal, Savard is rounding into the complete player that coach Claude Julien always felt he could be since he watched Savard develop as a youngster in the Ottawa area.
