Hossa Felt It Was Time To Get Rotator Cuff Surgery

from Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune,

“It was getting really bad,” said Hossa, who played with the injury last season and scored 40 goals with the Red Wings. “The smartest idea was to do it at the time.

“When I lifted something light, I couldn’t ... raise my arms. It was that bad. Right now the rehab is going well, [and] I can’t wait to start working out with the heavier weights on the upper body. When I’m 100 percent, I’ll jump on the ice and not worry about anything.”

Hossa said the injury worsened during the Wings’ run to the Stanley Cup finals last season as he was limited to three assists in the seven-game series the Penguins won. That performance drew the ire of many Wings fans who didn’t realize Hossa was injured.

“That’s part of our business,” Hossa said. “We can’t talk about injuries during the playoffs. People can say whatever they want. They don’t see what’s happening inside.”

Kelly Believes Hossa Contract Valid

from Tim Sassone of the Chicago Daily-Herald,

Paul Kelly, executive director of the NHL Players Association, said he would be surprised if the investigation of Marian Hossa’s contract with the Blackhawks resulted in a ruling against the team.

“Based upon everything that we know, those contracts are perfectly valid and proper under the terms of the (collective bargaining agreement),” Kelly said, speaking Tuesday at the USA Hockey Olympic camp in Woodridge.

There Could Be A Problem With Hossa’s Contract

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun via the London Free Press,

The NHL is investigating whether Marian Hossa’s new 12-year, $62.8-million (all terms US) contract with the Blackhawks circumvents the collective bargaining agreement and the salary cap, Sun Media has learned.

The ’Hawks could be facing a maximum fine of $5 million and the loss of draft picks if the league’s investigation uncovers proof of allegations that Chicago discussed the possibility of Hossa retiring before the end of the deal, which would end Hossa’s cap hit.

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly confirmed the investigation in an e-mail yesterday, stating that league officials are concerned with the structure of the contract.

Surgery For Hossa

Press Release-

The Chicago Blackhawks announced today that right wing Marian Hossa will undergo surgery tomorrow, Friday, July 24, on his right shoulder to repair a small tear in his rotator cuff.

“Marian’s injury did not respond sufficiently to our non-operative treatment over the last three weeks so we have collectively decided today to go ahead with the surgery,” Blackhawks General Manager Stan Bowman said. “Marian is a franchise player and we want what is best for him and the Blackhawks long-term. This was a mutual decision and one we feel very confident is the right one.”

“Marian has a small right rotator cuff tear that he has been battling for a while and because he is not at 100 percent with non-operative treatment he is undergoing operative treatment tomorrow,” Blackhawks Head Team Physician Dr. Michael Terry said. “With this type of tear we anticipate a four month post-operative recovery period, after which we expect his shoulder to be 100 percent. This is the best thing for Marian and his career long-term.”

“After consulting with my family and the Blackhawks, I have no doubt that this is the correct decision,” Hossa said. “I plan on being a member of the Blackhawks for a very long time, which is why I want to get this done and begin my career in Chicago at 100 percent.”

Hossa Has Been Playing With The Shoulder Injury

via Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Wings general manager Ken Holland said Marian Hossa did not injure his shoulder during the playoffs as indicated in a story in the Chicago Daily Herald. Holland said Hossa had a slightly torn rotator cuff when the Wings signed him on July 2, 2008, but it wasn’t anything significant.

“He was hurt before he got to us,’’ Holland said. “Our doctors looked at him and we had conversations about whether to have surgery. Our doctors recommended he should have something done at some point but it’s something he can play with.’’

Hossa Rehabbing Torn Rotator Cuff Injury

from Tim Sassone of Between The Circles at the Chicago Daily-Herald,

A source close to the situation confirmed new Hawks winger Marian Hossa has a shoulder or rotator cuff injury.

The severity of the injury is not known, although it is possible Hossa might need surgery, which could put him out of the Hawks lineup until December.

The Hawks are monitoring Hossa while he rehabs the injury, believed to have been suffered during the playoffs.

Hossa Now The Other Guy

from Michael Rosenberg of the Detroit Free Press,

In sports, people want lightning rods. Winning is more fun if you really want the other guy to lose. To Wings fans, Marian Hossa just became the Other Guy.

Professional sports rivalries ebb and flow more than college or high school rivalries. A Michigan State-Michigan football game always will feel special, no matter how good the teams are, but Lions-Packers is only truly huge if one of the teams is trying to go 0-16.

Red Wings-Blackhawks is now the biggest pro sports rivalry for any Detroit team. You have two Original Six teams who just faced each other in the conference finals and should battle for division and conference supremacy for the next five years. They are ancient and modern rivals.

Holland Hopeful He Can Sign Hossa

via George Sipple of the Detroit Free Press,

Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said he sat and talked with Ritch Winter, the agent for Marian Hossa, in the lower bowl of the Bell Centre stands in Montreal on Saturday and remains hopeful the two sides can work out a long-term contract.

“We’ve got a limited amount of cap space to play with or determine how we’re going to spend it,” Holland said. “Obviously for us to bring Marian back, we’re going to have to let people go.

“I’ve sat with Ritch here and told him to what cap level we’re prepared to go. The only way we can make it work is to offer a long-term deal. I would say to you they were hoping to do better. At the same time, they understand the challenges we’ve got and understand that probably in order to be where they want to be we can’t get there.”

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

“We won’t be as dangerous offensively, we know that,” Holland said. “It’s impossible for us to keep all our forwards from last year. If we re-sign Hossa, if he buys what we’re selling, we’ll be losing three or four or five players. And even if he’s not here, we can’t keep the entire team together. Under the cap system, we cannot be on paper next season what we were last year.

“We’re excited and optimistic because we’re moving in three or four young kids that we think are ready to play regularly in the NHL.”

added 8:55am, from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

“If there’s a (salary) cap number we think can fit in, we’ll sign him. We’re prepared to do a long-term deal,” Holland said. “(Hossa’s agent) Ritch Winter is hoping for a bigger cap number, more than what we’re offering.

“He’s talking to Marian. We’ll talk in the next couple of days. I’m not optimistic, but we’ll see.”

Teams Interested In Hossa

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN,

The Detroit Red Wings got a query or two this weekend from other teams looking to acquire the rights to pending unrestricted free-agent forward Marian Hossa.

“Yeah, I have been approached about acquiring his rights,” Wings GM Ken Holland told ESPN.com on Saturday as the NHL draft wrapped up.

But for now, the answer is no as Holland keeps trying to re-sign the star winger.

“But obviously if it appears that we can’t get anything done in the next 48 hours, then ... you’d rather get something than nothing,” said Holland. “So right now, I’m just in a holding pattern.”

Talking Hossa

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

Holland met with Ritch Winter, agent for Hossa, the last two days in Montreal.

The two discussed possible deals, but probably not as high as Winter would hope.

“I think he (Winter) was hoping for something higher,” Holland said. “I told him this was as high as I could go before I had to start dismantling (the roster).”

Holland and Winter are expected to continue discussions throughout the weekend in Montreal, where the draft concludes today.

The Wings are offering Hossa a lengthy contract, maybe as much as eight to 10 years, at an average of $4 million to $5 million.

Now It Is Decision Time For Holland

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

General manager Ken Holland doesn’t anticipate making any moves for a couple of weeks, when he has a better idea of next season’s cap figure. Much will depend on whether Hossa is re-signed.

Whatever happens, the Red Wings still have a strong nucleus of players in their prime and some good, young talent in their system, ensuring they will remain among the NHL’s elite.

One day after losing to Pittsburgh in Game 7 of the finals, Holland lamented his team’s inability to close out the series after leading 3-2. But he commended his players, some of whom played through significant injuries, for their effort, feeling they just ran out of energy at the end.

And he praised the Penguins, whom he said were focused and hungry and gained tremendous experience—particularly young players Evgeni Malkin, Sidney Crosby, Jordan Staal and Marc-Andre Fleury—from losing in last year’s finals.

Don’t Blame Osgood

From Drew Sharp at the Free Press:

The coming days will find Detroit in a constant state of complaint. Those who fervently believed in the inevitability of a downtown championship celebration will seek blame for the Stanley Cup inexplicably leaving town.

The more-stubborn conspiracy theorists will take to their graves the certainty in their minds that Pittsburgh’s remarkable recovery from a 3-2 series deficit was a league-orchestrated operation to fulfill Sidney Crosby’s championship destiny.

But there’s one flaw in that theory. You mean there was only one flaw?

Crosby didn’t play the final 30 minutes Friday after an apparent knee injury.

There’s plenty of fault to go around following this collapse.

Point a finger at the lack of secondary scoring, Marian Hossa’s vanishing act against his former team, as well as the missing in action Tomas Holmstrom and Jiri Hudler.

But you can’t blame Chris Osgood.

What’s The Deal With Hossa?

from Seth Rorabaugh of Empty Netters at the Pittsburg Post-Gazette

Believe It Marian

from Brian Compton of NHL.com,

Now, incredibly, Hossa and the Wings must beat the Pens in a Game 7 to determine the Stanley Cup champion. It’s a scenario not many envisioned prior to the start of the regular season—and certainly not when the Penguins were two games above the .500 mark in mid-February and fired coach Michel Therrien.

“Who would?” Hossa said when asked if he ever thought it would come down to this. “Would you? I don’t think many people, but the situation is right now how it is. I have to deal with it and we have to make sure we give it 100 percent and be good at home.”

Hossa’s certainly hoping to make more of a contribution on Friday, and more than he has in this series. He has just three assists through the first six games, and just three shots in the last two.

“It’s definitely frustrating,” said Hossa, who had just one shot on goal in 18:27 of ice time. “We didn’t play bad, but they scored two goals and we scored one. We didn’t create lots of clean chances.”

Hossa, Lidstrom & Zetterberg Today

Q.  What about offense for like some of the guys, maybe a little bit yourself. I know Game 4 has been good for you. Tomas is struggling. How do you try to get your offense going so you don’t have to worry as much about their offense?

MARIAN HOSSA: We have to step up, and you know, get it going offensively. Help this team score some goals and put them ?? instead of coming back, the last two games. So, you know, we have to be better offensively, and we have to step up.

Q. What did you think happened in that six-minute stretch when they got the three goals?

MARIAN HOSSA: That was momentum changing. You know, they scored the shorthand goal, and that kind of gave them momentum, especially in their building. And they also got the jump. And after they got another one from our mistakes.

But, you know, we are back to basically a 0-0 situation, and now, you know, it’s the best of three, and we have to make sure we play strong games at home.

Pens, Wings & Hossa

Both of the following stories were written before Game 5 started, but now I can post them since the Wings won…

from Mike Brophy of Sportsnet,

If a tree falls in the forest and there’s nobody around to hear it, does it make a sound?

I’ll go out on a limb and say yes.

If the Detroit Red Wings beat the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Stanley Cup final for the second consecutive year, did the 2008-09 season actually take place?

Hmm, that one is a little tougher.

I presume since I watched about 1,000 NHL games this year it actually did take place. So I guess the answer is yes. The thing is I don’t get the sense the Penguins are in a significant better position to beat the Red Wings this year than they were a year ago, assuming, of course, the Red Wings dispose of the Chicago Blackhawks in the Western Conference final as expected.

continued

from Hooks Orpik at PensBurgh,

Would the Penguins be where they are now if they still had Hossa and less depth?  We’ll never know for sure.  Sidney Crosby scored 6 goals last spring, he’s got 14 now.  Malkin had 22 points last post-season, this time around he’s got 28 in fewer games.  Crosby and Makin have carried the weight, showing that the decision for depth over top-flight skill has apparently been a good one so far.

Hossa Wants A Game 7 Win

from George Sipple of the Detroit Free Press,

Hossa is 0-for-3 in his NHL career playing in Game 7 (all three with Ottawa) and said he was “looking forward to turning it around” and advancing this time. He has no goals and two assists in previous seventh games.

“Other games you have a chance, but this—the series is tied and one game you go home or you go further,” Hossa said shortly after the team landed at Metro Airport on Wednesday afternoon. “It’s a huge game. We have to get prepared. You cannot get it in your head.

“It’s an important game, but it’s another game. Just try to win that game because it’s huge.”

Hossa isn’t surprised that the series is coming down to a seventh game. “Both teams are really good and strong and it comes down to the last game,” he said.

Hossa’s Time?

from Kostya Kennedy of Sports Illustrated,

So this is it. This is where we see just how Marian Hossa’s $72 million gamble turns out. The Red Wings winger famously spurned that many millions (and long-term security with the Edmonton Oilers) for a one-and-out shot at winning the Stanley Cup with Detroit. When have you seen a free agent do that?

Hossa Comfortable With His Role

from Bob Wojnowski of the Detroit News,

As the Wings head into the second round tonight against Anaheim, Hossa is in the spot he always envisioned. He’s needed and wanted but doesn’t have to do it all, or even the bulk of it. No one on the Wings ever does. And really, of all the unusual reasons Hossa took the Wings’ one-year, $7.45-million offer instead of long-term treasures elsewhere, this is the main one, for this time right now.

“Look around, you’ve got legends in here, and it’s a great group of guys,” Hossa said. “It’s just fun to be a part of it. And they play the way I like, the puck-control game. Playing with so many stars, the pressure is spread, there’s no focus on one guy.”

And there’s the dichotomy of the Hossa Experiment. He came to Detroit to win his first Stanley Cup, and by accepting a one-year deal, he put enormous pressure on himself. But the truth is, it’s actually less pressure than if he’d stayed in Pittsburgh for a reported $35 million, or gone to Edmonton for the rumored $80 million.

If Hossa is skating with a burden, he sure isn’t showing it. He led the team with 40 goals in the regular season, and often was brilliant. He was clutch in the first-round clincher against Columbus, scoring his first two goals of the playoffs.

The Hossa Situation

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,

“Let’s see now, we have an 11-year contract and a 12-year contract, so I guess Marian will take 10 or 13 years,” laughed Hossa’s agent Ritch Winter, who talked to Holland about numbers Saturday, although Holland won’t be able to sign Hossa until June because of their cap situation. Hossa is going nowhere. His cap hit will be in the $6-million range. “I will tell you this: despite what people are saying, the salary cap in Detroit will definitely be no impediment to Marian signing there,” said Winter.

Will Hossa Buy-In?

from Damien Cox of The Spin,

So Johan Franzen gets his $43.5 million and the Red Wings get the cap number they want, $3.95 million for the next 11 years.

Starts at $5 million per, ends at $2 million, $1 million and $1 million for the last three years. If The Mule can’t play by then, he’ll be making his money in Grand Rapids.

But the real question the Franzen deal produces is this; can the Wings now still sign Marian Hossa and keep their core of star forwards together?

The answer is its up to Hossa.

Basically, the Wings can now give him a contract that produces a cap number between $5 million and $5.5 million.

If he’s looking to average the $7.45 million he’s making over a long term deal - and his production probably warrants it - it won’t be in Detroit.

continued

added 5:21pm, from Set Rorabaugh of Empty Netters,

Just glancing at NHLNumbers.com, it looks like Detroit will have approximately $7-8 million of cap space next season. In addition to Hossa, forward Mikael Samuelsson and goaltender Ty Conklin are scheduled to become free agents this offseason. Neither player is irreplaceable, but they have been significant parts of Detroit’s success this season. And stalwarts Nicklas Lidstrom and Tomas Holmstrom will become a free agents after the 2009-10 season. When you consider the fact that the salary cap could come down due to the malaise of the economy, it doesn’t seem the Red Wings will have the type of money available that Hossa, even at a reduced rate, would command.

Hossa’s Groin Strain

The Wings received good news on the Marian Hossa injury front, as an MRI revealed no torn muscle in his groin, which he injured during the second period of Thursday’s game. Hossa wanted to play in Sunday’s regular season finale in Chicago, but he’ll miss the last two games, including Saturday’s home game vs. the Blackhawks. Hossa and the club are hopeful that he’ll be ready for Game 1 of the playoffs.

Oilers Should Stay Away From Hossa

from David Staples of The Cult of Hockey,

The most excellent sources of Journal columnist Dan Barnes have told him the Oilers will make a go at Hossa this July, but we can only hope this effort is met with failure, or that it’s reconsidered. Even if Hossa wants top dollar, and even if did choose to sign in Edmonton, the Oilers would be committing salary cap suicide if they offered him $8 or $9 or $10 million a year.

Last summer, this pursuit of Hossa apparently took the focus off of the signing of Curtis Glencross, who could have been had for tens of thousands more, not hundreds of thousands, and certainly not millions. But Glencross was precisely the kind of small move the Oilers needed to make last summer. It wouldn’t have been a home-run signing, but it would have been a sharp double to right field.

There’s no quick fix in this modern NHL, no way for a bottom team to sign up that star player to a massive deal and challenge for the Cup, because the top player won’t make a salary sacrifice to play on a bottom or mid-level team. He will only do that, maybe, to play on the right Stanley Cup contender.

Holland Talks Hossa & Franzen

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

Holland plans to meet with Hossa’s agent, Ritch Winter, during next week’s trip to western Canada. Holland is talking to the camps for Hossa and Johan Franzen, the Wings’ two biggest free agents headed into summer.

“Given the uncertainty of the economy, I’m moving slow,” Holland said Wednesday. “But it’s not only the economy. It’s about team building, it’s about our philosophy. We can keep Franzen and Hossa, but then we’ll have to let a whole lot of other players go. I don’t know if that’s the answer to being competitive. But if I can get a number that I think allows us to have one extra player, you start to think more and more about doing something. Right now, I’m not really close to where I’d like to get to with either side.”

Hossa Down Again

Marian Hossa was hit from behind in St. Louis, and ended up ramming the end boards head first.  The hit from Roman Polak was hard, but not necessarily dirty. Still on the ice but Blues announcers saying he has movement in limbs, etc.

Hossa Returns To Pittsburgh

from Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun,

Tomorrow, you will step on the ice at the Mellon Arena for the first time since you snubbed the Pens. And you will be wearing the red-and-white jersey of the Red Wings, who carried the Stanley Cup on this same surface eight months ago in front of the loyal Pittsburgh fans who supported you through thick and thin.

Let’s be honest. You will be perceived as a traitor and will be treated as such.

Are you ready to be showered with boos? You had better be.

“It will be loud,” Hossa acknowledged yesterday. “And when I touch the puck, it will be louder. That’s what I’m expecting. I try not to think about it—just focus on my game and do my stuff.

more plus more hockey talk including some trade scenarios…

added 7:42am, from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Hossa believes the 12-year, $73-million pact Zetterberg signed helped him get a better gauge of his own market value. He made it sound as if a deal with the Red Wings would eventually happen.

“I know what I kind of want, I want to stay for a long time,” Hossa said. “This is great to be part of. We’ll see how the negotiations will go, what Ken and Ritch (Winter, his agent) tell me. It could be a few days, a few months or after the end of the year.”

Hossa Or Mule?

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,

If you strapped Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland to a chair and jabbed him full of truth serum, he’d say he wants to keep his hoss, Marian Hossa, more than his Mule, Johan Franzen, if Holland only has so many dollars to spend.

Franzen developed a cult following in Detroit after those 28 goals in his final 32 games last season, including the playoffs, and he’s followed it with 22 in 43 games this year, six of those game-winners. That’s 50 goals in 75 games, but Hossa, 30, is the world-class talent, almost a point-a-game player (695 points in 749 games).

If Hossa says he’ll play the next six years in Detroit for an average cap hit of between Henrik Zetterberg’s $6.1 million a year and Datsyuk’s $6.7 million, Holland is dancing. If Hossa wants to play hardball, then Holland will go to his Plan B, Franzen. Yet, while Franzen often looks like John LeClair from his Legion of Doom glory days with Eric Lindros with his bullish ways around the net, there’s a gnawing feeling that the 225-pound Swede benefits greatly from the cast around him.

Hossa Looks Good In Detroit, But Probably Not For Long

from Bruce MacLeod of Red Wings Corner,

Marian Hossa fits perfectly in Detroit. He fits in a locker room full of Mr. Congeniality candidates. His style of play—a big goal-scoring winger who focuses on defense—is exactly what this team was lacking.

Marian Hossa’s next contract will be a long-term one. He wants to settle in one place. He wants exactly what Henrik Zetterberg got earlier this week. And he’d love to settle in Detroit.
But there’s a good chance that won’t happen. Not here, at least.

Hossa is at the wrong time—in the salary-cap era—and the wrong place—a team loaded with high-end signings that leave little cap space.

Marian Hossa Has No Regrets

From TSN:

He turned down a multi-year offer from the Penguins and is reported to have rejected an $81 million, nine-year offer from the Edmonton Oilers for what he felt was his best chance to win a championship.

But then came the credit crunch, falling stock prices, rising unemployment and the very real chance that NHL clubs will have fewer dollars to throw around for the next batch of unrestricted free agents in July.

“I know the economy is not great now, but no regrets,” Hossa said Thursday on a conference call. “I came here to Detroit for one reason and that was to go all the way.

“We’ll see at the end of the year if it was the right step, but for now, it’s been a great experience - winning and playing for a great team. That’s what I was looking for.”

Pick One: Franzen Or Hossa

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Getting Franzen locked up will not be easy. The Red Wings went through a difficult negotiation process with him and his agent in the summer of 2006, when he was a third-line, checking forward with seemingly modest offensive potential. Franzen could cost the club between $4- and $5 million a year, and he surely would get more on the open market.

Re-signing Hossa would require a series of events. The Red Wings would have to deem Franzen’s asking price more than they want to pay. Hossa would have to give them a discount in the neighborhood of his current $7.45 million salary. And even then they would need to shed some salary to make room for Hossa, whom the club cannot begin contract talks with until after Jan. 1, since he’s on a one-year deal.

Whom do they choose? The decision probably will be made for them, once they learn each player’s asking price and determine who is a better value for the money.

Everyone Is Talking Hockey

from Mike Knobler of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution,

We came to practice in Traverse City, and it’s a sellout [every day] for practice,” Hossa said. “It’s a small arena, but that shows me something. Obviously, in Atlanta there were good fans, but it’s not a traditional hockey market. You can tell the difference.”

It’s a difference, he said, that helps the Red Wings.

“You’re still playing the same game, [but] there’s definitely more atmosphere,” he said. “You get more fired up before the game. Everybody’s talking about it. You’re more under the microscope. Everybody’s talking about hockey.”

Evening Line

Instead of being disappointed he couldn’t be the agent behind a monumental deal,(Ritch) Winter left the Hossa negotiations with a different reaction.

“Admiration,” Winter said. “I just think Marian is a quality guy and a quality player. He’s a great player but might be a better man. The overwhelming response was positive; then there was a few scattered negative comments. That, I couldn’t understand.”

added 9:17pm, from Dave Waddell of the Windsor Star,

Nearly two weeks into free agency, if anything, the Wings have separated themselves further from the pack in the NHL. Even at the minor-league level, Nill admits times have never been this good for Detroit.

“Yeah, depth-wise (best we’ve ever been),” Nill said. “We have a lot of kids turning pro, the Emmertons, Mursaks, Pyett, Abdelkader, so we’re adding some good young kids. “Darren Helm showed he can play. “Up here (Detroit) we’re positioned well for next year, but we still have to go do it. It’s not going to be easy.”

Expect Hossa to Stay in Detroit

From Ken Campbell at The Hockey News,

In a hockey world rife with uncertainty, you can take this one to the bank: if Hossa turns out to be a good fit with the Red Wings, he will be in Detroit beyond next season and for many more to come.

There is absolutely no way Holland makes this deal exclusively with the 2008-09 season in mind. When Holland makes a deal of any magnitude, it must serve two purposes –that is make the Red Wings a better team in the short-term and a better team in the long-term. And there is no way Holland would have made the deal if he hadn’t already figured out there’s a good chance he’ll be able to get Hossa in the fold on a multi-year deal after next season.

Oilers Owner Having Free Agency Fun

Edmonton billionaire Daryl Katz spoke to the media today.

From the CP via TSN:

Minutes before the news conference, the Oilers latest hopes of landing a marquee forward were dashed when word surfaced that Marian Hossa had signed a one-year deal with Detroit.

But Katz simply smiled as he talked about the excitement of working this week with Oilers general manager Kevin Lowe as they bid for Hossa to give Edmonton some much-needed scoring punch.

“We’ve had a lot of fun,” he said. “The experience of pursuing Marian was great for us and it won’t be the last time.”

Hossa Wants The Cup

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,

A day after three dozen or so of his peers went chasing after the most dollars they could possibly grab, Marian Hossa left tens of millions on the table Tuesday to sign a modest one-year, $7.4 million deal with the Detroit Red Wings.

Hossa was being greedy all right — but not in the conventional sense of the term. At the age of 29 and 10 years into his NHL career, Hossa was greedy for a Stanley Cup — and figured his best chance to win one was to go to the defending champions.

Hossa To Wings

via the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette,

The Penguins have lost free-agent right winger Marian Hossa to Detroit.

Team officials are believed to have been informed this morning that he will not re-sign.

Terms of Hossa’s contract were not immediately known, but the Red Wings are believed to have been offering a shorter-term contract than most other clubs.

The Hossa Talk In Edmonton

from Terry Jones of the Edmonton Sun,

While general manager Kevin Lowe said “the numbers are a little bit inflated” when it comes to the reported $9 million a year deal over a rumoured nine-year term for 29-year-old Slovakian Marian Hossa, in the same breath he added: “Daryl said from the outset he’ll do whatever it takes and spend to the cap.”

The excitement comes from a community unaccustomed to being in the bidding for the most sought-after player in the Canada Day craziness. The fear comes from paying that kind of money to a player who is recognized as more of a follower than a leader, especially if the deal takes him to age 38. That’s the kind of insanity which history suggests more teams live to regret than not.

Hossa Update

According to TSN there is “zero percent chance” of Marian Hossa signing anywhere today.  He’ll be taking some more time to think about his options.

Consider this the Hossa rumor thread until then—there’s certainly enough of them floating around.

Devils May Pursue Hossa

from Tom Gulitti of the Bergen Record,

There are some indications, however, that Lamoriello will try to make a big splash after the free agent market opens at noon on Tuesday in an attempt to propel his team back into the Eastern Conference’s elite.

The big fish would be right wing Marian Hossa....

Although pursuing such big-name players would seem to be out of character for Lamoriello, he suggests otherwise.

“All of that goes on behind the scenes and we don’t talk about it,” he said. “If we can do something that makes our team better, we’ll do that. You try to do that during the regular season, but you can’t always do it.”
