Atlanta Won’t Sign Hossa

from Craig Custance at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution,

On Saturday morning, Waddell officially closed the book on the possibility of signing Hossa before Tuesday’s trade deadline.

“No, I don’t believe so at this point,” said Waddell, when asked if signing Hossa before the trade deadline was a possibility. “We’re going to look at all our options at this point, look at what the market will pay.”

Both Hossa and Waddell described the meeting as a positive one.

a little more...

Even though most of us expected Hossa would not come to terms with Atlanta, at least we know it is now official.

thanks to a KK reader for the heads-up!

A Joke Of A Rumor

PJ Stock on Team 990 radio in Montreal mentioned Marian Hossa to Boston is a hot rumor right now, but it was all a joke.

Looks like some of the rumor fools picked it up and even confirmed it had legs to it!!!

Hossa Still A Thrasher

from Bob McKenzie of TSN,

Amid published reports out of Montreal, that the Canadiens have ordered equipment for Hossa in the event they secure his rights, and out of Ottawa, where the Senators are apparently in a holding pattern on Hossa, the focus in Atlanta today is strictly on the Thrashers’ game tonight against Carolina.

Sources say Atlanta GM-head coach Don Waddell is in full coach mode today and won’t be working the phones or advancing any trade talk for the talented winger who is likely to be dealt before Tuesday’s NHL trade deadline.

But sources also told TSN that before Waddell resumes trade talk on Hossa, he wants to take one final stab at seeing if he can sign the winger to a contract extension.

Edmonton May Have Interest In Hossa

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,

Edmonton Oilers general manager Kevin Lowe may be in pursuit of free-agent sniper Marian Hossa of the Atlanta Thrashers, according to sources….

It seems inconceivable that Hossa would want to play in Edmonton because the Oilers aren’t an elite team. He’s 29, in his prime and wants to win a Stanley Cup.

But maybe Lowe still wants to give it a shot, even if he may be baying at the moon. He presumably has got the money for Hossa with the immiment takeover of the team by billionaire drugstore magnate Daryl Katz—the big winger is expected to command $7.5 million a year come July 1.

Hossa’s agent, Ritch Winter, is a Katz fan, too. Whether Winter sees a future for his client in Edmonton is debatable because it also gets to be 30-below zero in the winters and Hossa might want a more established cast of players.

Waddell Wants Help Now

from Thrashers Blog,

...But the most interesting thing from my conversation with Waddell is in regards to Hossa. He continues to say that keeping Hossa is a viable option, especially considering the offers he’s getting in Naples. He’s standing firm on his stance that he wants a player back who can help the Thrashers win games this year. He hasn’t mentioned specific players, but some of the names we discussed yesterday seem like a good place to start: Jonathan Cheechoo, Valtteri Filppula and you can add Chris Higgins to that list.

Hossa Doesn’t See A Signing By Deadline

from Thrashers Blog,

...Hossa said the chances of him signing an extension before the trade deadline are “very slim.” I imagine that’s the closest he’ll come to saying, there’s no way he signs before the deadline.

He still hasn’t ruled out signing with the Thrashers down the road, but he understands the ramifications of not doing it before the deadline. It puts the ball in Don Waddell’s court, because Waddell has been maintaining he’d like to sign Hossa to an extension before the deadline. It doesn’t look like that is going to happen.

added 6:45pm, from Blueland Blog,

If the Thrashers don’t trade Marian Hossa between now and Feb. 26 he’s still under contract for the remainder of this season and the team retains exclusive negotiating rights with Hossa up until July 1. A lot could happen between now and then. For example, Don Waddell could work his magic and pick up some key pieces at the deadline like he did last year.

Decision Time Nearing

from Bob McKenzie of TSN,

Atlanta GM Don Waddell has to deal with the Marian Hossa situation.

Buffalo GM Darcy Regier has to deal with the Bryan Campbell situation.

And the situations are close to identical.

Both GMs are holding out hope, albeit faint, of signing those players before the trade deadline on Feb. 26 or even the July 1 date when they both are scheduled to become unrestricted free agents.

But, while neither can or will say this publicly, the sense in Atlanta and Buffalo is both players are not going to sign before the trade deadline.

Atlanta Still Holding On To Hossa

from the AP via the Ledger-Enquirer,

Atlanta began the day third in the division, one point behind second-place Washington and two points behind Carolina.

Waddell said his options include re-signing Hossa, keeping the veteran on the team even if he remains unsigned, or trading Hossa for players who could help Atlanta this season and in the future. He said he hasn’t decided when he would end attempts to re-sign Hossa.

“We haven’t tied ourselves to a date,” Waddell said. “Our No. 1 goal is to try to sign this player. In the meantime, we’re in a big race here. He’s one of our most important players. We’re utilizing our players as much as we can to try to make sure we stay in contention. If you end up trading the player for a lesser player right now, it makes more sense to keep your player for as long as you can to try to establish yourself within your division.”

Hossa Situation Encouraging

from Blueland Blog,

Which brings us to Marian Hossa. Negotiations are ongoing and Don described the situation as “encouraging”. He also said that he’s getting calls about Hossa but that no trade offers have been made. He’s not letting the discussions get to that point yet. Most of the calls are coming from the West but some are from the East. Waddell re-affirmed that he won’t trade Hossa if he can’t find a deal that he thinks makes the team better this season.

Hossa Talk

from Thrashers Blog at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution,

From Don Waddell’s end, he spoke briefly about Hossa today and, while he restated his stance that the priority is to sign Hossa, it sounds like he’s realistic to the fact that he might not have that chance. “The next eight to ten games will help us decide if we look at moving him for assets or look at keeping him because winning the division is within our grasp and something that is very important to us.” The GM meetings start in nine games. So essentially, if Hossa isn’t signed, Waddell will have made his decision by the time he goes to Naples.

Move Emery To Atlanta

from the Ottawa Citizen,

If Senators general manager Bryan Murray has had his fill of Emery and is already making inquiries about a trade for another goalie, he should zero in on the Atlanta Thrashers and offer general manager and interim coach Don Waddell a package, which would include Emery, to primarily secure the guy who was sent to Atlanta 21/2 years ago for Dany Heatley: Marian Hossa.

Sure, this might be the biggest fantasy or pie-in-the-sky scenario of the year. Yet speculation is rife about a Hossa trade because talks to get the player, who becomes an unrestricted free agent come June, re-signed to a multi-year contract aren’t going smoothly. Hossa, one of the best two-way players in the game, was a favourite in Ottawa before former general manager John Muckler pulled the rug from under him.

Thrashers Still Targeting Hossa

from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution,

Thrashers general manager and head coach Don Waddell originally targeted the All-Star break as a point by which he wanted to get a contract extension done with Hossa. But Hossa’s agent, Ritch Winter, who said he won’t be in town for the game, is guiding the Thrashers through a process in which there hasn’t been negotiations of money or terms.

The Thrashers’ only offer, a four-year deal worth $28 million, came before Hossa hired Winter.

Waddell said another offer will come, just not yet. And he’s bumped back that goal of getting Hossa signed by the All-Star game, pointing instead to a stretch of home games after the break.

The Thrashers play six of their next seven games at home, and Waddell hopes a successful run might convince Hossa to stay.

Remember Hossa

from Erin Nicks at the Ottawa Sun,

But why would a playoff-obsessed team such as Ottawa wish to renew ties with Hossa when they’ve witnessed his lack of post-season prowess first-hand?

During his tenure in the capital, Hossa’s playoff record displays little evidence of his typical regular-season flash-and-dash. The Slovak achieved double-digit totals in only two playoff runs (the most notable was 2002-03, with 16 points in 18 games—five goals and 11 assists). All other post-seasons he finished with a paltry four points or less, including 2003-04—his last season in a Sens jersey.

Hossa’s Goal Is To Win The Cup

from Thrahsers Blog at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution,

As for Hossa? He says: “I’m 29. There are four or five years in your prime. My goal is to win the Stanley Cup. To do it [you have to be] on a good team. So I want to take my time. I want to make sure if I sign here, it’s a good decision. That’s why it’s taking so long. It’s a big step for me, and the organization. We’re trying to make the best of it.”

“We got some big pieces in this organization, key pieces,” Hossa said. “That’s a good sign. We’ve just got to prove it on an every day basis.”

2nd Line Of The Day

Marian Hossa via the Atlanta Journal-Constitution,

“The agent is still working on a deal with Don, hopefully we can work out the best of it. I hope I can stay. But obviously we know there are two choices, stay or going away. I’m preparing for both choices. The priority is I would like to stay here.”

added 5:53pm, Kevin Allen was just on WDFN radio in Detroit.  He doesn’t think the Wings will go after Hossa, but you never know with the Wings.  The Wings know in order to keep thei ball rolling, they need to hold onto draft picks and the younger players.  He feels they will go after a mid-level player(s) at the deadline.

Hossa Shows Wings His Stuff

from Kevin Allen of USA TODAY,

When Atlanta Thrashers Marian Hossa scored three goals in the first 22 minutes against the Detroit Red Wings, he might have been making a sales pitch to Detroit general manager Ken Holland as well as helping his team.

Although the Thrashers would still like to re-sign Hossa, the consensus around the NHL is that Hossa wants a change of venue. Maybe he wants to come to Detroit.

It sure looked that way to me as I watched Hossa play his best game of the season.

Update 1:24pm ET: From Bob McKenzie at TSN,

Marian Hossa is going to market.

That is the message the Atlanta Thrasher forward has delivered in no uncertain terms to general manager Don Waddell.

Hossa’s Future

From Pierre LeBrun at Sportsnet.ca,

This could be a critical week in the future of star winger Marian Hossa with the Atlanta Thrashers. Sources tell Sportsnet.ca that if progress isn’t made in contract talks with the potential unrestricted free agent, the Thrashers could begin shopping him in earnest.

GM Don Waddell is slated to resume contract talks this week with Hossa’s agent Ritch Winter. The two haven’t talked contract in nearly a month. The Thrashers would still much prefer to keep Hossa but if the dialogue isn’t positive over the next 10 days, the NHL club will need to go to Plan B and put him on the market ahead of the Feb. 26 NHL trade deadline.

So-So Hossa

from Jeff Schultz of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution,

But before general manager Don Waddell drops to his knees, opens the checkbook and implores Hossa to stay, he needs to realize something: The Thrashers are a .500 team partly because of Marian Hossa….

And how is it one of the NHL’s best two-way forwards is a minus-10 — worst among the team’s forwards?

What the Thrashers have right now is not Hossa-like. What the Thrashers have is Hossa Lite.

Hossa acknowledges his production is down. But he says he feels fine physically. He denies feeling any pressure from the contract status.

“I have a contract to play now, so there’s no reason to feel pressure,” he said Saturday.

He might want to start.

Hossa Has His Priorities

from Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun,

“I’ve heard some rumours, but I don’t pay too much attention to them,” Hossa, who scored 188 goals in 467 games as a Senator from 1997-2004, told an audience of one following a workout.

“I’m here right now, and my focus is to help this team. Whatever happens, it’s up to management and my agent.

“I feel comfortable here. It’s a great place,” he added. “The main thing is winning the hockey games and having a good team. That’s my priority. I’m not rushing right now to sign a deal ... I want to know how the team is.”

Thrashers Upbeat Regarding Hossa Contract

from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution,

Don Waddell confirmed that he had a meeting with Marian Hossa’s agent Ritch Winter this week and that talks of a contract extension for the All-Star forward are progressing. Hossa is scheduled to become the NHL’s premier free agent this summer, but Waddell is optimistic it won’t get that far.

“It’s progressing, and as long as we continue to have the kind of talks that we had, they’re very upbeat and on target with where we’re headed, then at some point here we’ll be able to announce a deal,” Waddell said.

Hossa Not Feeling It

from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution,

Marian Hossa wasn’t feeling it. The Thrashers had just played Montreal even through three periods and five minutes of overtime. It was time for the shootout.

Don Waddell turned to Hossa to see if the Thrashers star forward still wanted to be the second shooter, just like he was all of last season when he scored five shootout goals.

But surprisingly, one of the most prolific scorers in the NHL declined.

“Don asked me and I said, ‘I don’t think I should go in this time. I just don’t feel it,’” Hossa said.

Marian Hossa Out With Groin Strain

via the Ottawa Citizen,

Hossa caught his skate in a rut at the end of practice on Monday and pulled a groin muscle. This morning, coach Bob Hartley ruled him out of tonight’s game against the Senators.

“He really wanted to play but this is not the case where we’re going to bring him back if he’s 80 per cent or 90 per cent,” said Hartley.

“We are all in agreement that he won’t come back until he’s 100 per cent.”

Sign Hossa

from Spector at Fox Sports,

In Atlanta, talks are ongoing between Thrashers general manager Don Waddell and top forward Marian Hossa, who’s eligible for unrestricted free-agent status next July. Reports out of Atlanta suggest thus far both sides are agreeable on the term of a new contract (three or four years) but the dollars have yet to be hashed out.

It’s essential to the Thrashers to retain Hossa, arguably their best forward, to prove to their fans that the team still considers itself a serious playoff contender, but uncertainty over the club’s current ownership situation might be affecting negotiations.

Marian Hossa Looking For Thornton Type Money

from the Thrashers Blog,

The communication between the Thrashers and Marian Hossa’s camp continues in an attempt to get him signed to an extension before the season starts. There hasn’t been a formal offer from the team, but it sounds like they could whip one up real quickly if there are indications from Hossa that he’s ready to sign. All signs point to a possible deal in the four-year range. If he gets Joe Thornton-type money, that would put the total around $28-30 million.
