The Best Of The Best

It’s only a slight exaggeration that Martin Brodeur’s comeback has been his career in a nutshell.
Hockey is watching, and everyone else around here should be, too. It’s just not that often we have the “greatest ever” (even if only arguably) on display, night after night, right where we live.
Babe Ruth? Not quite that old. Julius Erving? Hmm, maybe not. Wayne Gretzky? Not his heyday. Niatross? OK, horses don’t count.
It’s 15 seasons now, which means it mostly is behind us, and it’s time to appreciate it while he’s still at the top of his powers.

Conference Call Transcript: Martin Brodeur

After missing 50 games due to injury, Marty returned to the Devils’ lineup this past week recording three wins, including two shutouts to garner First Star of the Week honors. The three wins give him 547 for his 16-year NHL career, four behind all-time leader Patrick Roy who retired with 551.
Here is a transcript of his Q&A session with the media today, courtesy of the NHL.
Q. Is it possible that this injury, the silver lining could be that you’ll be fresher down the stretch and in the playoffs as you’ve ever been in your career?
MARTIN BRODEUR: Well, I hope so. I think you have to take every positive you can from an injury. Sometimes it’s hard to have them. But definitely not playing as many games, you know, we’ll see what that translates into, what kind of success in the playoffs.

Brodeur’s Dream Comes True

Brodeur admitted this shutout was a little different, though.
“It’s special,” he said. “I had a couple of good shutouts in my career in different areas and different games, but this one was pretty special to come back after that long. I didn’t get tested much. I had 24 shots, but there were still a couple of shots (that were tough) and they hit a post. I got a little lucky. It was kind of nice.”
When asked when he first started thinking about a shutout, he replied, “Last night, when I was dreaming.”

Brodeur Activated, Clemmensen Sent Down

Martin Brodeur was activated by the Devils Wednesday morning and fellow goalie Scott Clemmensen was sent back to Lowell (AHL).
The move sets up the scenario for Brodeur to start Thursday night’s game against the Colorado Avalanche at the Prudential Center. Were the Devils not planning to start Brodeur, there would’ve been no reason to demote Clemmensen.
“It’s the best of all worlds, other than (for) Scotty,” GM Lou Lamoriello said as practice was beginning Wednesday morning. “You always have to make the best decision for the organization.”
Clemmensen, who was with the Devils the past four months under emergency recall, did not have to clear waivers. Kevin Weekes would’ve had to clear waivers.

Brodeur Talks After Practice

Here’s how Brodeur’s informal meeting with the media went today.
Were you nervous for your first practice with the full team?
“No, not really. I knew was not going to get as much work in practice time. They said we were going to practice only for 20 minutes, so I said, ‘All right. I’m going ot have to some work after.’ So, I wasn’t really nervous. I was anxious to get going and see the speed of the shots, speed of the guys. It’s totally different than just making drills when guys are coming at a high pace. That’s why I need to practice, just to get used to that. It was good.”
Through the process of your recovery have you had any setbacks?
This one time—I don’t think I was on the ice yet—doing some of my rehab, I tweaked it pretty hard. It was the first time that broke scar tissue, so that panic. I was like, ‘Oh my God!’ And that was catching a lacrosse ball. We stopped right away and put ice (on it). I talked to (the doctor) and (he) was like, ‘Don’t worry about it. It’s going to happen.

[Coach Brent Sutter:] “Like I said, this is not training camp and it’s not the first 10 games of the regular season. This is the real deal here now. Teams are playing at the elite level. Teams are competing to get into the playoffs. Teams are trying to get different seeds in the standings and everyone has to be at their best and that’s including the goaltender.
“Yet. we’ll monitor this the right way. There’s been a course in place and everything has gone along very well. We just have to stay the course and I have tremendous confidence when Marty comes back that he’ll be very solid. Yet, there might be some games we have to get through. There’s no need for anybody to think he’s going to be an every-day goalie when he comes back.”
Sutter’s comments seemed to be in direct response to what Brodeur said Monday about his expectations for playing, particularly with his mentioning of training camp and the first 10 games of the season.

Brodeur Looks Sharp In Practice

Although the Devils had announced that there would be no morning skate today, I suspected Brodeur might be at Prudential Center today and stopped by on the way home from the airport. Brodeur was among a handful players who skated and worked hard during the 40 minutes he was on the ice….
Brodeur looked sharp as he was peppered with shots from all angles byt head coach Brent Sutter, assistant coaches John MacLean and Tommy Albelin, and left wing Jay Pandolfo, who will be a healthy scratch again tonight. No one held anything back and Brodeur showed no signs of rust or problems with his left arm. Many of the shots were aimed at his glove side and he threw up his left arm without hesitation or limitation to snag pucks out of the air.

It’s the elephant in the room, the unspoken question that hangs over the Devils’ season.
What do they do when Martin Brodeur comes back? Will he, essentially, have to win his job back?
General manager Lou Lamoriello, who has instituted another cone of silence around Brodeur, brushed off the question. But he can’t laugh it off. Coach Brent Sutter said Brodeur will have to win games right away.

Brodeur Doing Light Rehab

Thursday will make it four weeks since Brodeur’s surgery. He has an appointment to see the doctor on Wednesday. His rehab right now is simply to get his arm to straighten out fully.
“Just baby stuff, trying to get my range of motion,” Brodeur said. “I’m almost there. I’m almost straight out now. It’s probably another 10 degrees to go without feeling any pulling in the tendon. It should take another week to two weeks before it heals and after that I should be able to work harder and do more stuff.”
Although the tendon was torn off near his elbow, Brodeur has to work on strengthening his wrist too.
“It’s like a sprained wrist almost,” he said. “When I’m in the brace it’s not bad. When I’m not in the brace, there’s no support.”

Brodeur Surgery Successful

New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur underwent surgery Thursday to repair the distal bicep in his left elbow.
“According to the doctors, his surgery was 100 percent successful,” Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello said in a statement. “The timetable for his return remains three to four months.”

Now We Find Out How Great Brodeur Is

It’s a Kafka-esque absurdity that 544 wins, 98 shutouts, four Vezina Trophies, three Stanley Cups and an Olympic gold medal don’t convince everyone that he’s a terrific goalie. You know the lame arguments: “The Devils play a defensive system, which makes him look better.” “He stopped pucks behind a great defence.”
The first complaint is just ridiculous. If it’s so easy to win the Stanley Cup playing defensive hockey, why doesn’t the trophy have a permanent home in Minnesota? It is important, yes. Since Pittsburgh in 1993, only one champion hasn’t been among the top 10 in goals against in the season of victory. (That was Carolina in 2006. The Hurricanes were tied for 17th.)
As for the second whine, how do you feel about Ken Dryden? Is he overrated because he played behind Larry Robinson, Serge Savard and Guy Lapointe? Like Brodeur, Jacques Plante had two Hall-of-Famers on the blue-line when the Canadiens won five consecutive Stanley Cups from 1956-60 - Doug Harvey and Tom Johnson.

Brodeur Out 3-4 Months

Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur will have surgery Thursday morning to repair a torn distal biceps in his left elbow and will miss three to four months, Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello said this morning.

Brodeur Undergoing Tests Today

Kevin Weekes, who will start in goal against the Sabres, said the torn tendon in his catching arm that required surgery in the offseason was originally diagnosed as a bruised elbow.
“We talked (Saturday) night a couple of times. We texted back and forth,” Weekes said. “He’s a little bit unsure as to what his status is. We kind of bounced some things off each other. He was nice enough to text me. I appreciated that. I texted him back and gave him what information I had.”
Brodeur described to Weekes what he was feeling. He apparently hurt the elbow reaching for a shot during the second period and felt more pain when he made another move.

Brodeur Has Some Kind Of Elbow Injury

Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello insisted that Martin Brodeur suffered only a bruised left elbow when he left tonight’s 6-1 win over the Atlanta Thrashers.
“It’s just a bruised elbow,” Lamoriello maintained. “It’s just a bruise.”
Lamoriello would not answer when I asked if Brodeur underwent an MRI or any other tests after he was injured.
Devils coach Brent Sutter also had no answer for how long Brodeur will be out or if he will be able to play Monday.
“I don’t know,” Sutter said. “You’re asking me something that I’m not sure of and I’m not trying to be disrespectful at all because I just don’t know what to tell you. I don’t know any more than you guys know that’s been mentioned here. So, I don’t know right now. I guess we’ll see where Marty is at tomorrow and see how it goes.”

What Could Have Happened

In the middle of the second period Oct. 22, with the Devils leading 1-0, Brodeur cleared the puck past an on-charging Dallas winger - Brodeur’s nemesis, Sean Avery.
“I saw somebody,” Brodeur told The Post. “It’s hard to know who it is when you’re playing the puck.
“I got the puck by him, saw it was him, and said, ‘[Rats], I should have hit him.’ “
A possible brawl was averted, but only by the slimmest of margins.

The new “MB30” logo combines Brodeur’s initials with the number he has worn since his first full season in New Jersey, and incorporates the horns and curled tail that are familiar to any Devils fan. The interior is subtly accented by the crisscrossing shape of a goal net.
Brodeur believes it’s a modest revision that some observers might not even pick up on right away.
“It’s going to be hard to notice, I think,” Brodeur said. “It’s the same color scheme. For people facing me, there really won’t be a difference. It’s really more for TV or even for people looking up from top. I don’t think it should be a big difference for people.”

Brodeur Looking At Vancouver 2010

Prior to the 2006 Winter Games in Torino, Italy, Brodeur expressed that it would probably be his last shot as the No. 1 goaltender for Canada because of his advancing age. But, now with the Vancouver Games only a year and a half away and Brodeur coming off back-to-back Vezinas, he’s thinking a little differently.
“I’d love to go,” Brodeur said. “I’d love to be part of it. It would be a great experience, but I don’t know what the role will be. Definitely, I’m going to gun to be No. 1 if they pick me. We’ll see where my career is. There’s a lot of young guys that have a chance to challenge the guys that were there last time. That’s good. That’s healthy. I’ve got the experience of going to three of them, so that’s one thing that’s on my side. We’ll see what their decision will be. For me, that’s not the ultimate goal, but it’s a goal I’m looking at seriously. I think it would be quite an accomplishment to play in four Olympics. My kids have already been talking to me about it. They want me to go. I told them, ‘We’re only going if I’m playing.’”

Not-So-Gentlemanly Behavior

One of the most revered traditions in sports is the handshake ceremony after each Stanley Cup playoff series, when the bloodied warriors on each team line up to offer congratulations to their foes for a job well done. Sportsmanship at its greatest.
It’s just seems incomprehensible, though, how guys who had just been knocking the pus out of each other can all of a sudden start hobnobbing. For me, it’s not uncommon to hold a grudge against someone who takes 3 minutes to heat a pile of rice in the office microwave.
So, is this on-ice glad-handing genuine?

Brodeur Turns Down Team Canada

Surprisingly, Brodeur yesterday said he’s turning down the chance to play for Team Canada in the World Championship in Quebec next month. He indicated that the five-game, first-round playoff loss to the Rangers New York Rangers sapped his desire to play right now.
Brodeur said it was “The circus with the Rangers,” and especially, “You Know Who,” who made him look “tired mentally,” as coach Brent Sutter put it.

Vezina Finalists Announced

In one corner is the mainstay, the ol’ reliable in New Jersey Devils’ dynamo Martin Brodeur. Last season, Brodeur captured his third Vezina Trophy in the last four seasons after setting an NHL record with 48 victories. This season he won 44 games.
In another corner, we have the element of surprise, the unlikely candidate in San Jose Sharks veteran Evgeni Nabokov. He has never been a Vezina finalist and had previously never played in more than 67 games in one season. Nabokov played in 77 this time around.
And finally, we have the rising star, the current and future “King” of New York in Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist. This is Lundqvist’s third-straight season as a Vezina finalist, meaning he’s been in the final three in each of his three NHL seasons.

Brodeur Did The Right Thing

Martin Brodeur was a focal point in this series from beginning to end. He was bumped and badgered verbally by Sean Avery throughout the season and series. Avery didn’t even stop after the series was over, calling Brodeur “fatso” on a postgame interview on MSG.
Normally, I would not defend Brodeur not shaking Sean Avery’s hand. It’s wrong 99.9 percent of the time.
It was wrong when Scott Stevens and Bobby Holik skipped the handshake line following the 1997 series between the Devils and Rangers and claimed afterward that they forgot about it.
But this is the .1 percent of the time when it wasn’t wrong.
If Sean Avery wants to say things about Brodeur’s family and his personal life and stare him down face-to-face he can’t reasonably expect the guy to shake his hand afterward.

How Weird

Imagine Henrik Lundqvist’s surprise upon discovering that Martin Brodeur had been quoted in the Jan. 14, 2008, edition of Sports Illustrated as saying of the Rangers’ goaltender, “The way he plays is not something I like too much.
“Lundqvist is weird.”
“I have to tell you, I respect Marty a lot, and it’s always a great challenge for me to play against him, but I don’t know what to say about what he said about me,” a rather bemused Lundqvist told The Post yesterday.

Underrated Devils

When the Devils started this season with their nine-game road trip and a roster that had some around the league holding back smirks, it seemed unthinkable that they would have the best record in the Eastern Conference with 10 games to play.
Few doubted that a Lou Lamoriello team would be competitive, even one that lost its No. 1 center via free agency, was missing a top defenseman with a serious eye injury and had a plan in place to use goalie Martin Brodeur less often. But first place in the conference?
“If you looked on paper at our roster and compared it to some other teams in the conference, possibly not,” captain Jamie Langenbrunner said. “But I think some guys on this team are underrated as far as putting up numbers.”

Voting for Hart

It’s almost time to vote for the Hart Trophy and I’ve got to be honest, I am not even close to picking my winner.
I will say, though, I have narrowed it down to four candidates – goalies Martin Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils and Roberto Luongo of the Vancouver Canucks, left winger Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals and right winger Jarome Iginla of the Calgary Flames.
I firmly believe, had Sidney Crosby not missed so much action with that high ankle sprain, he would have repeated as the Hart winner. Oh well.
Update 5:50pm ET: John Glennon at The Tennessean wonders this about Ovechkin,
“His energy and his passion — if you could bottle that and stick it inside your players — you would have an unbelievable team.’’
It sounds like the description of an MVP, but there’s a catch. The Capitals are in a position similar to that of the Predators, two points out of the playoff picture with nine games remaining in the season.
Hence the question: Should Washington fall short of the postseason, should Ovechkin win the MVP? The last player to accomplish such a feat was a guy named Mario Lemieux, who did it while playing for Pittsburgh in 1986-87.

Brodeur Dealing With Family Matter

Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur has pulled out of the Sunday’s NHL’s All-Star Game in Atlanta to deal with family matters. Brodeur said he informed Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello of his decision about a week ago, but it was not announced by the NHL until today. Brodeur will be replaced by Boston goaltender Tim Thomas.
“It’s a tough decision,” Brodeur said. “I’ve got some stuff going on with the family back home, so it’s something I just wanted to make sure I was here to take care of. It’s definitely a tough one. It’s such a great weekend to miss. That’s why I waited so long. I tried to avoid making that decision, but I think it’s for the best.”
Brodeur would not divulge the details of his “family” stuff other than to say, “health-wise everybody is OK.”

Martin Brodeur has a message for those who believe he plays too many games and should rest more often.

The philosophical underpinning for the Brodeur Plan, floating around since the early years of the NHL’s Dead Puck era, is unassailable: By being allowed to ice the puck without consequence, the penalized team is inherently rewarded….
“If you ice the puck now, you can’t change,” Brodeur said, “so you’d get tired penalty killers out against a fresh power play. That’s a better advantage [for the team with the extra skater]. It’ll force [penalty killers] to flip the puck like the in old days, land it soft, without icing it. They have to manage the game better, which is also a skill.”

Jagr. He’s so skilled, he can beat you with his reach, his moves, his shot. He’s really talented, he’s one of the guys I fear most in the league.
Other than yourself, who would you say are the three best goalies in the NHL today?
[Roberto] Luongo has to be one. DiPietro, for sure. [Henrik] Lundquist, he’d be another one.

Goaltenders Roberto Luongo of the Vancouver Canucks, Martin Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils and Niklas Backstrom of the Minnesota Wild have been named the NHL’s ‘Three Stars’ for the week ending December 2.
Atlanta Thrashers left wing Ilya Kovalchuk, Vancouver Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo and Tampa Bay Lightning center Vincent Lecavalier have been named the NHL’s ‘Three Stars’ for November.

Brodeur Reaches 500 Wins

Martin Brodeur gave Patrick Roy some company in the 500 victory club.
Brodeur reached one of hockey’s rarest milestones, stopping all but two shots in a modest effort thanks to some of New Jersey’s usual stout defense and earned his 500th NHL win.
Brodeur made 26 saves in the Devils’ 6-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday night and joined Roy as the only goalies in NHL history with that many victories.

“He’s such a great athlete,” Brodeur said. “What I look at is a guy’s ability to skate, and he’s a really good skater. The foundation is his mobility, how athletic he is, how competitive he is.
“Everything is there. It’s just that sometimes a couple of things are going the wrong way and the next thing you know, everything doesn’t fit.
“But when he finds a way to put everything together, relax and be patient, he has so much skill, so much speed, that he’s going to be all right. I love watching him play, because he’s a spectacular goalie.”

Avery Stirs It Up

Avery called Clarkson “a bonehead minor leaguer” after the game and called Brodeur, “Marty the diver”, a reference to the goaltender’s first period diving penalty. “I don’t even know who this guy is, why am I talking to him,” Avery said of Clarkson. “We’re not friends. It’s not an (expletive) secret. We’re getting ready for a game and we go to war.”
When asked if Brodeur said anything back to him, Avery said, “I can’t understand a word he says with his accent.”

There are few with better qualifications than Brodeur to evaluate a coaching performance and the future Hall of Famer says he likes what he’s seen from Brent Sutter during the first week of training camp.
“I think Brent definitely took charge right from Day 1 in the way he wants our team to play,” Brodeur saidWednesday on a conference call. “I think just how strong he is as far as the way he talks, how confident he is in himself reminds me a lot of Pat Burns or Jacques Lemaire.
“He’s not a guy who’s going to let the players dictate too much what’s going on.”
