Turco Under Pressure

“The pressure (comes from) missing the playoffs for the first time in my career, a new coach, a new general manager—for all of us in the organization after completing our worst season I’ve been around, there is pressure on everybody,” Turco told Sporting News.
Now Turco enters the final year of a contract that averages $5.7 million, and he could be playing for his future in Dallas....
Along with trying to get his team back in the postseason, Turco wants to keep his job, too.
“I have a family—three kids now. I turned 34 (Aug. 13) and have one year left on my contract. That’s personal. We’re human and this is my job,” Turco said. “That’s pressure different than the arena of sport. I feel fortunate that I don’t feel stressed about my personal situation. As competitive and driven as I am, these things seem to take care of themselves.”

Turco Wants To Prove Last Season Was A Fluke

For all the hype about Gustavsson and his NHL potential, the plan still is for Turco to have his hands firmly on the wheel of the Stars in 2009-10.
And Turco, who will turn 34 on Aug. 13, is aware of that.
“It’s a huge year for me in a lot of regards,” said Turco, whose contract ends after next season. “But, honestly, the thing that is most important for me – like I think it is for every player on the team – is that I want to prove last season was a fluke. I want to prove that we are a much better team than we showed.”

Any Interest In Marty Turco?

Marty Turco did not reach the triggers for his no-trade clause this season, so he can be traded.
Also, while his cap hit is $5.7 million, his actual contract cost is only $5.4 million, so that does make the deal a little better.
Bottom line, I think if the Stars wanted to move him, there would be probably be interest (Philadelphia, for example, has no goalie signed). However, the Flyers have $50 million committed to next season already, and that will be the problem with a lot of teams.
We’ll see. My guess is the team is committed to Turco for next season and is hoping that he will have a great year as he faces unrestricted free agency.

Legal Shootout Goal?

On the Ducks’ fourth shootout attempt, Teemu Selanne skated in, came to a stop and lifted the puck over Turco, who was on his side and did a two-pad stack to no avail.
It ended up as the game winner.
NHL rules regarding shootouts have dictated that if either the player or the puck is continually moving forward then the play is legal.
Turco gave Selanne credit for the move, but he wondered if the rule should get a closer look.
“It didn’t really surprise me,” Turco said of the move. “There was nothing I could do once you get off your skates. But they should freshen the rules on dead stops, which is not right. It’s not legal, I guess, if that’s the right word. It doesn’t have any effect on our season but certainly (it did) theirs. It’s a good play. It’s legal.”

Turco Goes For A Skate

Marty Turco skated behind his net to try to play the puck on a rim-around and missed it. The puck came out to Christopher Higgins on the side boards and he flipped in into a wide open net.
The goal put the Canadiens up 3-1 and that is how the game ended.

Turco Has Found His Game

The 33-year-old is 6-1-0 in his last seven games with a 1.70 goals-against average and a .934 save percentage.
“I feel good right now, that I’ve come a long way,” he said. “My ability to stay on my feet longer to react to second plays or even third plays from a balanced position has been a great feeling for me lately.
“I have been fighting my body and my movements this year, and I’ve worked hard to get that back. I just want to be the guy they deserve back there.”
Turco has been the biggest reason for the Stars’ turnaround, providing key stops at critical times and also helping the defense with his ability to handle the puck.
“No matter what you do, your goaltending has to be good,” Tippett said. “It can do so much for the team’s confidence. It can allow players to overcome mistakes, it can change a game with a big stop early or late. Marty has done that for us lately.”

Avery’s Departure Not the Only Reason for Surging Stars

The signing of Avery was a mistake - and at $15.5 million over four years it might be one of the most expensive mistakes in NHL history. Not a single player was happy with the addition of the controversial, self-centered winger and his presence had an adverse affect on numerous players the team depends on.
The Stars were 8-11-4 with Avery and are 16-7-4 without him.
Avery aside, the Stars desperately needed Turco to return to form if they were going to dig themselves out of a hole. It looks as though Turco is back on his game.

Lemaire vs. Turco

“Turco pushed the net,” Lemaire said. “It’s the third time that Turco does that, just against us. He goes like he’s going to stumble, and he just lays on the post, that’s what he does. It’s a trick, but now they’ll know. Next time, they’ll watch."…
When told that Lemaire said that historically speaking, Turco had a history of doing that, Turco replied:
“When he played, they had steel pegs in there, and the net wasn’t coming off, And I don’t know how many times he was in front of the net, anyway...historically speaking.”

Marty Turco was quite upset with himself. When asked what he was thinking at the time, he replied:
“I really didn’t know what I was thinking. Generally, I watch them (the opposition) and let them dictate, but I’m on my backhand at that particular time of the game, I don’t know what I was thinking.”

Turco Stands Out

There goes another monkey off the back of Marty Turco.
Despite being one of the world’s best players at his position, Turco is consistently one of the most underappreciated as well.
People always want more from the unpredictable tender. A year ago he posted three shutouts in the first round, but because Dallas lost, Turco, still, wasn’t a “playoff goalie.”

Yet another NHL teleconference today featured Dallas Stars goaltender Marty Turco, who has posted and 8-4 record with a sparkling .173 goals-against average, and Dallas captain Brenden Morrow, who has recorded seven goals and four assists for 11 points in 12 games, including two overtime game winners in the series win over San Jose last round.
Here is the transcript of their Q&A.
Q. Marty, you’re just fresh off winning two incredible series and beating two fellow great goalies. I see right off the bat that people are already asking you about your record at Joe Louis. There’s no time to breathe. What do you make of that? Does it mean anything?

Anyway, Turco wins and he immediately becomes the answer to our next trivia question: Can he lead the Stars past the Wings? Given his play through two rounds, the answer is a resounding yes! Until the games start, naturally.
Looking ahead, the Red Wings will be huge favorites in the Western Conference final. The Stars looked dead in the water through most of overtime Sunday, so how can anybody expect them to beat the best team in the league?
The answer is Turco. Muddle through poor play, long stretches of non-scoring chances and questionable defensive protection. Turco will save the day.

Turco Was The Difference

I find it hard to find a better story in the first round of the NHL playoffs than goalie Marty Turco helping his Dallas Stars knock off the defending Stanley Cup champion Anaheim Ducks.
You know, the same Ducks I predicted would beat Dallas in seven games. Wrong, Pierre!
In the lead-up to that series between Pacific Division rivals, it was widely reported how J.S. Giguere had the highest playoff winning percentage among active NHL goalies. That would be the difference. Especially, some people added, given “Turco’s spotty playoff record.”

The New Turco

The transformation occurred two summers ago in Marty Turco’s hometown of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
That’s when he shaved off his wavy black locks, opting for a low-maintenance buzz cut. It’s when he completely changed his diet and revamped his off-season workouts, opting more for core strength and flexibility.
You saw the results of his new approach last year in the Dallas Stars’ 4-3 series loss against Vancouver, and you continued to see them the other day in Game 1 against Anaheim.

Just got off the phone with Les Jackson to ask him about the Marty Turco for Martin St. Louis trade that hockeybuzz is touting, and he said his policy going forward is going to be to not comment on trades, because it just seems like a waste of time to him.
But he said he has not had talks with trading Marty Turco to anyone for anything.
“I am not interested in trading Marty Turco. That’s just the way I feel,’’ he said

Open Up The Five-Hole

Turco’s job is to keep pucks out. But he also cares deeply about the game, and believes the league needs more pucks going in. Unlike many keepers who shriek in terror at the thought of more equipment shrinkage, Turco is open to the idea…As long as it is in the right places. And for him, that means those darn kneepads and flaps.
“The problem is a lot of the guys wear a pad under their socks, and then another one over their socks. So when they go down, they are several inches higher. Then you have these flaps which are like putting a board in front of the five-hole.”
He told the NHL’s Competition Committee in the summer that all this extra knee “protection” was excessive. Nothing came of it.

What A Comeback

Normally I don’t do game recaps, but last night the Kings were down 4-0 going into the 3rd period and came back to win 6-5 in OT…

Marty Turco didn’t seem too rattled after Dustin Brown spoiled his shutout bid with 7:14 left in the third period. After all, the Dallas Stars still had a three-goal lead, so what could possibly spoil it?
How about five goals on six shots?…
“The whole third period was brutal,” Turco said. “Other than embarrassing, it’s a total lack of respect for each other. You can’t just sit back and wait for it to go your way. You’ve got to make things happen. And we haven’t been making enough happen. We were just lucky to get a point out of all that.”
