Raymond Returns To The Ice

from Ian MacIntyre of the Vancouver Sun,

Vancouver Canucks forward Mason Raymond rejoined teammates on the ice here Tuesday for the first time since suffering a compression fracture in his back on a hit by Boston Bruin Johnny Boychuk in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup final.

Raymond, who spent most of the summer in a back brace, emphasized there is no time frame for his return to National Hockey League action. But the winger felt good enough during Tuesday’s hour-long workout to participate in drills that involved contact.

“It’s good to be here,” Raymond said. “It’s been a long time. It’s the first time on the ice since the incident. To get out there with everybody else, see a few smiles … it felt good. It has been a lot of hard work. June 13: that date sticks in my head. Tonnes of rehab, doing things twice a day, doing everything I could to get myself better. You work for moments like this. Today is another stepping stone.”

No Suspension for Boychuk

From James Mirtle at the Globe & Mail:

The NHL’s acting disciplinarian, Mike Murphy, confirmed Tuesday that Boston Bruins defenceman Johnny Boychuk will not be suspended for his hit on Canucks winger Mason Raymond in the opening seconds of Monday’s Game 6.

According to Canucks GM Mike Gillis, Raymond “sustained a vertebrae compression fracture” on the play and is expected to miss three to four months.

Murphy said via email that the league’s hockey operations department reviewed the play but deemed it an “awkward collision” and not worthy of a suspension.

“[It was an] awkward collusion between two players battling for space/room,” Murphy wrote. “[You] rarely see a player bumped when in the position Raymond was in (bent over forward).”

Canucks Not Happy With No Call On Raymond Hit

Sportsnet (headline on their hockey page) is reporting sources are telling Sportsnet’s Dan Murphy that Vancouver Canucks forward Mason Raymond suffered a fractured vertebrae while Darren Dreger of TSN writes,

The Vancouver Canucks were very upset that there was no penalty call on the play where Mason Raymond was injured on the first shift of the game.

Canucks general manager Mike Gillis stormed out of the TD Garden after Game 6, questioning a lot of people as he headed toward the Canucks’ bus as to whether or not anyone saw the puck near Raymond when he was hit by Johnny Boychuk.

Questioning The Play Of The Canucks

from Tony Gallagher of the Vancouver Province,

The Canucks won 4-3 on a bizarre OT goal from Mason Raymond but for most of the night they almost all looked as though they could have used a long, hard slurp of the best energy drink on the market.

We all know the Colorado Avalanche young players skate well and can put some pressure on you but the Canucks are supposed to be Cup contenders.

And yet after four days off they spent more than half the night back on their heels examining just how good a goaltender Roberto Luongo can be after all this nonsense about Cory Schneider perhaps making something of a goaltending controversy in Vancouver.

While Schneider has been good in his two home starts against easy opposition, the listless Canucks made Lui produce an excellent performance to get only his second win of the year, and if the team plays like that in front of him very often every W in his column is going to be a tour de force.

JJ’s Three Cheers: 10/18/10

This morning’s three cheers for those that shined in yesterday’s action:

***Cheers to Anaheim’s Corey Perry, who broke a 2-2 tie late in the third with his third goal of the season to lead the Ducks to a win over Phoenix. Perry also managed an assist in the game and was a plus-3 for Anaheim, who got 36 saves from goaltender Jonas Hiller in victory. Speaking of…
