With Mathieu Schneider and Pavol Demitra going on long-term injury reserve, the Vancouver Canucks have found wiggle room under the salary cap ceiling.
Schneider confirmed Thursday morning that offseason shoulder surgery will keep the 40-year-old defenceman from opening the regular season on Oct. 1 at Calgary. Although he has been practising, Schneider has not been able to take contact. The news is worse for Demitra, who hasn’t even healed enough to practice. Offseason shoulder surgery could keep the winger sidelined until November.

Schneider A Canuck

Vancouver, B.C. - Vancouver Canucks President & General Manager Mike Gillis announced today that the Canucks have signed defenceman Mathieu Schneider. In keeping with club policy, terms were not disclosed.
Schneider, 40, spent the 2008-09 season spilt between the Atlanta Thrashers and Montreal Canadiens. In 67 games with Atlanta and Montreal, Schneider recorded 32 points (9-23-32) and 64 penalty minutes.

Canucks Providing An Opportunity For A Few Older Players

The Vancouver Canucks are committed to giving young players such as Cody Hodgson and Michael Grabner opportunities to make the team this season, but age and experience will also be served when the NHL team begins training camp next month.
The Canucks are speaking with free-agent defenceman Mathieu Schneider about a contract, and have signed veteran forward Dave Scatchard. Schneider, who turned 40 this summer, is recovering from off-season shoulder surgery, but Canucks general manager Mike Gillis said he has been assured the 20-year NHL veteran is healthy enough to participate at camp.
“Obviously, everything is always conditional on passing a physical,” said Gillis, who used to represent Schneider when he was an NHL player agent. “I believe he’ll be ready to go.”

The defence corps for the Montreal Canadiens took a major hit Monday, as TSN learned that the Habs will be without leading scorer Andrei Markov for three weeks and Mathieu Schneider’s season is over.

How The Schneider Deal Was Made

Don Waddell’s phone rang Sunday afternoon in Anaheim. It was Montreal Canadiens GM Bob Gainey, asking his Atlanta counterpart if he could meet with Habs executive Pierre Gauthier later that evening at the Thrashers-Ducks game.
The Canadiens were stepping up their efforts to acquire a defenseman and they wanted to further pursue Mathieu Schneider, a veteran slated for unrestricted free agency July 1.
Waddell didn’t waste his opportunity. For starters, there was always the chance the Canadiens, under tremendous pressure to act with the team in freefall, could opt for a different player if they couldn’t come to terms with Atlanta. The clock was ticking and Waddell feared the Canadiens had another deal in the works for another defenseman.

The Atlanta Thrashers have traded defenceman Mathieu Schneider to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for second and third round picks.
Schneider previously played for the Canadiens from the 1989-90 season to the 1994-95 campaign.

For the Thrashers, the deal clears salary and helps the team stockpile draft picks. Considering that just a few months ago, Atlanta traded spare parts Ken Klee and Brad Larsen to Anaheim for Schneider, getting multiple draft picks is a good return. It’s GM Don Waddell’s belief that there will be teams looking to clear salary this summer and by getting additional draft picks now, he puts the Thrashers in position to acquire some of that talent. One of just a few sellers at this point in the season, the Thrashers could still be active after this deal. Waddell is getting calls about Niclas Havelid and there would be a strong market for Colby Armstrong if the Thrashers decide to move him…

“We were looking for a defenseman who could contribute offensively. Mathieu, an experienced player with a lot of offensive upside, will bring depth to our core group of defensemen and will be an asset on our powerplay,” said Bob Gainey.

Burke Had To Make A Deal

For a while now, Brian Burke has been dancing with the devil, otherwise known as the NHL’s salary cap system.
Two years ago, Burke worked it beautifully and captured a Stanley Cup. Last year, his machinations went slightly askew and it cost his Anaheim Ducks the services of a very good veteran player, centre Andy McDonald.
This fall, the cap has pushed another quality veteran off the Anaheim roster in defenceman Mathieu Schneider, peddled to Atlanta yesterday in a deal that, as a pure hockey trade, was about as one-sided as you can get.

The Atlanta Thrashers have acquired defenseman Mathieu Schneider from the Anaheim Ducks for defenseman Ken Klee, forward Brad Larson and a minor-league prospect.

With the additions of Schneider and Hainsey during the off-season and the returns of Tobias Enstrom and Niclas Havelid the Thrashers now have a very respectable group of top-four defensemen that is arguably the strongest foursome in the Southeast Division. Schneider, whose brother lives in Atlanta, is in the final year of a contract that will pay him $5.75 million.

Atlanta Could Be Destination For Schneider

The Atlanta Thrashers are still pondering a move to land a defenseman, and Anaheim’s Mathieu Schneider would seem to be a logical choice if the Thrashers can fit him into their budget.
The Thrashers are only near the $41 million mark, and based on their off-season moves they don’t want to venture too far north of that figure....
Of course the Thrashers would have to convince Burke to probably take Ken Klee ($1.25 million) and another $500,000 player to make it work.

When Schneider is dealt, it’s possible it could be rolled out to a larger deal. Some teams have inquired about forward Bobby Ryan’s availability and the truth is Ryan, the second overall pick in the 04 draft behind Sidney Crosby, may be expendable on this Ducks’ roster.

Five Teams Active In Schneider Talks

“I have spent a good deal of time, as have (senior vice president of hockey operations) Bob Murray and (assistant general manager) David McNab, working on our cap situation,” Ducks general manager Brian Burke said. “Obviously, most of the activity is centered on Mathieu Schneider.
“Our goal would be to resolve this within 72 hours, maybe four days, max. We think to make Mathieu stay out longer than that wouldn’t be fair to him and his preparation as a hockey player.”
The Ducks are in “active” discussions with five teams regarding Schneider, and another club is on the “back burner.

The Anaheim Ducks, needing to trim payroll, have placed defenseman Mathieu Schneider on waivers with the expectation that a team will claim him and $5.75 million salary for this season.
Once they move Schneider off the books, the Ducks are expected to re-sign Teemu Selanne.

Among the clubs that might have interest in Schneider are the Kings, who are obviously even closer to his family’s current home than the Ducks, but don’t exactly figure to be Stanley Cup contenders during the remainder of Schneider’s career.
“It would certainly be convenient,” (Pat) Morris said. “Cups are hard to pick. You think you’re picking them when you sign with Anaheim, but it didn’t happen. (Marian) Hossa probably thinks he picked one with Detroit, but it’s hard to repeat, as the Ducks proved. When you get to his (Schneider’s) point, you want to keep playing. That could be done with LA. Winning is a bonus.”

Mathieu Schneider of the Ducks will carry an interesting streak into Wednesday night’s game against the Colorado Avalanche at Honda Center. The veteran defenseman has finished each of his past 26 games with a plus or even plus-minus mark.
Schneider’s streak is the longest active run in the NHL and only four games shy of the longest such streak in the league this season, established by defenseman Glen Wesley of the Carolina Hurricanes from Oct. 3-Dec. 8. While Wesley was plus-8 over that stretch, Schneider is plus-15 over his past 26 games.

Schneider On the Speculation

“It’s business as usual,” Schneider said. “It’s a unique situation. Everybody knows something is going to happen. There’s always speculation. Rumors are flying, and something’s going to happen. It’s in Brian’s hands right now, but as a player, all you can do is just show up every day and go out there and work, keep going. It’s nothing new to me. I think it probably affects young guys more than it affects veteran players.
I wasn’t naïve. I knew it was a possibility at any time. I signed my deal without any kind of trade clause in it, so it’s always a possibility. But at the same time, who knows what’s going to happen right now? We really don’t. No one has any kind of inkling. There are a lot of different scenarios that could unfold. Until it happens, there’s no sense really worrying about it.”

Schneider Starts His Season Tomorrow

“The only thing I can guarantee is I’m going to get shots on the net,” Schneider said. “I think the key is going to be to really play a simple game, play within the system. For the most part, especially on the power play, when I’m out there, I’m shooting. That’s not going to change, no matter where I am.”
The plan is for Schneider to team with Francois Beauchemin at even strength.
“There’s an adjustment there, without a doubt,” Schneider said. “I told him today, ‘Listen, just play your game.’ I’m probably going to be more conservative than I usually am. I’ll read off him.”

Schneider Loses the Ball & Chain

Mathieu Schneider felt so good about having the protective boot removed from his left foot that he found a way to celebrate the occasion.
“I feel like I’ve lost my ball-and-chain,” Schneider said, beaming. “I’m going to run over it with my car. Maybe I’ll have my kids do it.”
It has been a mostly solitary existence for Schneider thus far with the Ducks.
The 38-year-old defenseman broke a bone in his ankle in his first appearance with his new team—during in an exhibition game against the Kings on Sept. 15.

Ducks’ Schneider Out with Broken Ankle Bone

New Ducks defenseman Mathieu Schneider will be out at least four weeks after breaking a bone in the left ankle during his first preseason game with the Stanley Cup champions.
An MRI taken Sunday revealed that Schneider sustained a non-displaced fracture of the ankle Saturday night in Anaheim’s 3-2 victory over Los Angeles.
The 38-year-old Schneider, beginning his 20th NHL season, signed a two-year, $11.25-million deal with Anaheim. The Ducks brought him aboard this summer as insurance in case captain Scott Niedermayer decides to retire.

Schneider Hurts Ankle - MRI Scheduled

Veteran defenseman Mathieu Schneider, signed as a free agent July 1 as insurance against the possible retirement of captain Scott Niedermayer, left the game midway through the second period because of an ankle injury. Schneider is scheduled to undergo an MRI today.
“I really don’t know what to tell you,” Schneider said. “It didn’t feel like much on the ice, but it stiffened up on me. My skate just kind of stuck on the ice.”
