Ducks Talk—Sundin and More
by Alanah McGinley on 11/05/08 at 12:41 PM ET

Brian Kamenetzky at SportsHubLA has a new podcast out:
To gain more insight into the Ducks, I spoke with Hall of Fame hockey writer Helene Elliott of the LA Times. Among other topics, we talked about Anaheim’s lack of a reliable fourth defenseman behind Pronger, Niedermayer, and Francois Beauchamin, their future under GM Brian Burke, and the possibility of bringing in Mats Sundin.
Check it out here. Notable is Elliott’s contention that she doesn’t feel Sundin is the guy to put the Ducks over the top this season. Sundin talk starts at about the 9 minute mark.

Sundin “Intrigued” By Ducks

via Helene Elliott and Chris Foster of the LA Times,
The Ducks are $900,000 below the salary cap and would have to make major moves to sign the 37-year-old.“He’s intrigued. They’re a good hockey team, and one of his criteria is that he wants to play for a good team,” said Sundin’s agent, J.P. Barry. “He hasn’t made any decisions at all yet.”

From Pierre LeBrun and Scott Burnside at ESPN:
Pierre LeBrun: Scott, we get together again just in time to digest yet another update on Mats Sundin. As one GM told me the other day, “Tell the big Swede to make up his damn mind!” Well, Sundin is one step closer. He’ll start seriously skating and training in the Los Angeles area early next week, and then who knows after that. It might take three to four weeks before he’s ready to play.
Scott Burnside: Pierre, I never get tired of wondering about where the Ponderous One will end up. It’s like watching paint dry, only more pedestrian.

Sundin Preparing To Train

from Tim Wharnsby of the Globe and Mail,
Mats Sundin has taken the first step toward a return to the NHL.
The 37-year-old free-agent centre underwent a physical exam at a Toronto hospital yesterday — necessary to begin a rigorous period of training to continue his hockey career.
Sundin, who spent the past 13 NHL seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs, returned to the city last week and soon is expected to travel to Los Angeles to begin a two-week on-ice training stint.
It is believed that after those two weeks are up, he will begin talking to NHL teams to determine the best fit for him.

I still think he’ll come back around December. Where? To be determined. His heart remains in Toronto, but if the Leafs are already out of it come that time, he’ll need to cut the cord. Keep an eye on the Rangers and Flyers.

Sundin Speaks
by Alanah McGinley on 09/26/08 at 02:53 PM ET

From Sportsnet.ca,
Like millions of hockey fans who want to know what Mats Sundin is going to do, his own family has been putting pressure on the 37-year-old former Maple Leafs captain to make up his mind.
No more than his parents, who would regularly get up in the middle of the night in Sweden to watch their son perform in the National Hockey League.
“They all want me to play more,” Sundin laughingly told Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos in an exclusive interview at Sundin’s Baltic Sea cottage north of Stockholm. “That’s why I can’t stay (in Sweden) too long. I have to go make my own decision … There is pressure from everywhere.”
The full interview will air in Canada on Sunday at 9pm ET on Sportsnet television.

The Same With Sundin

from the CP,
Training camps are now open around the NHL and the regular season will get underway in less than two weeks. Even still, Sundin feels no added pressure to decide whether he wants to play again or not….
“There’s always going to be a hockey itch with me,” said Sundin. “I love the game of hockey. It’s been the biggest part of my life my whole life.
“The question that I don’t really have the answer for anyone at this point is whether or not I’m ready to play at the highest level and compete at the National Hockey League level. ... It hasn’t changed with training camps starting and all that.”
This should once again answer some emails I received over the last four days. Some guy who wants only “hits” on his website was claiming something was about to happen with Sundin. As I told some of you in a response, “don’t believe it.”

Sundin’s Drive Is Gone
by Paul on 09/15/08 at 01:24 PM ET

from Mike Brophy of Sportsnet,
Sundin’s indecision and indifference has become downright boring. Imagine the fuss if we were talking about a superstar and not just a point-per-game guy. Don’t get me wrong; I’m certain the 37-year-old Swede could still help a number of teams, but let’s be honest; we’re talking about a player whose best years are long gone. And if his uncertainty about whether or not he’ll continue playing is any indication, you have to wonder if his heart will ever be in the game again.

Lightning After Another Forward

from Tim Wharnsby of the Globe and Mail,
While the NHL community awaits Sundin’s decision, his agent, J.P. Barry, confirmed two more clubs have recently expressed interest in his client.
Barry would not reveal the two new teams that have joined the Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, Vancouver Canucks, New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers in the pursuit of the veteran centre, but one is believed to be the Lightning.
Sundin not only met with Leafs general manager Cliff Fletcher last Friday and Canadiens boss Bob Gainey on Saturday in Toronto, he also played in the Right to Play charity game with his old buddy, new Lighting forward Gary Roberts, as well as new Tampa Bay owner Oren Koules.

from Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun,
As he fought back his emotions at the heartwarming reception, the long-time Leafs captain broke into a big smile.
“Perfect,” he said as he doffed his helmet to the crowd.
Are we to read into his reaction that this was the “perfect” way to say farewell to his days as a Leaf—or, as the case may be, his professional hockey career? Sundin has not said as much, but it sure looked that way.

Sundin Free To Do What He Wants
by Paul on 09/03/08 at 07:37 AM ET

from Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun,
The longer the process continues to drag out, the more Sundin will be accused of being “selfish” by fans and various media members alike for making teams such as the Leafs, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, Vancouver Canucks and Montreal Canadiens wait as he attempts to make up his mind.
Such allegations have been front and centre throughout the summer.
They also don’t make much sense.
How is Sundin “selfish?” He is a free agent. He is the property of no one. And if there are any physical ailments, it only adds to the difficulty for the future Hall of Famer of finding the bottom line.
In any event, to claim Sundin is holding teams for ransom is silly. He owes them nothing even if, in the case of the Canucks, a whopping two-year, $20-million US deal was shoved in front of him.
more about Sundin…
added 12:00pm, via the CBC,
“I will not make up my mind before the season starts,” Sundin said at a news conference in Stockholm. “That’s how I feel right now. Others have started playing in the middle of the season. If I would feel like retiring, I would say it.”
Sundin was speaking at an event to announce his contract as a spokesperson for PokerStars.com. He will play in charity events for the company.

Sundin Update
by Paul on 09/02/08 at 12:47 PM ET
Comments (0)
Mats Sundin was on Leafs Lunch on 640AM in Toronto.
He is not at the point to make a decision on his NHL career. He had hoped during the summer he would get a clearer picture, but stated he is not there yet.
Probably will not make a decision by the time training camps open. Does not have a time line for his decision.
He has been working out but not skating on a regular basis. Again, not sure of what he will do yet and hopes people respect he is not at the point to where his career is headed.
added 12:49pm, Sundin stated he has not even looked at team options yet. Wants to decide if he is even going to play first.
Update 3:15pm ET: At AM640,
Sundin said despite offers from several clubs the decision of wether or not to play is still the biggest hurdle. Sundin also didn’t rule out a return to the NHL halfway through the season.

from Stan Fischler at the Hockey Journal,
While Mats Sundin and Joe Sakic have kept half the civilized hockey world holding its breath over their play-or-not-to-play decision, we’ll unequivocally assert that each will return to the NHL for 2008-09. The reason is as obvious as a $6 million contract. Who’s kidding whom? These guys love the moolah – and attention – as much as Sean Avery and Alley Oop Ovechkin.
If either of them packs it in, it’ll be the upset of the half-century; roughly equivalent to the shrinking of Patrick Roy’s ego.

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
Mats Sundin may be getting all the ink, but he is not the only established, prominent NHL player unsure of his plans for the coming season.
Without nearly the same interest or fanfare, three of his contemporaries — Joe Sakic, Teemu Selanne and Brendan Shanahan — are all facing a similar predicament.
Call them the 4-S club, a quartet of future Hall of Famers pondering what a life without hockey might be like and not sure whether the time is right to walk away.
How dramatic would their departures be? Consider that with Jaromir Jagr shuffling off to Russia, that group represents four of the NHL’s top six active-points leaders. All, except Sundin, have won the Stanley Cup.

We don’t know whether he’s going to play or not. I think Mats is still trying to decide that in his own timeframe. But, if he wants to play, we’d certainly have an interest in seeing if we could fit him in.”

Mats Sundin’s agent is denying a report in the New York Post that says his client wants to join the Rangers.
When contacted by TSN, Barry denied there have been any increased discussions with the Rangers. He told TSN that he has spoken to both the Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers but also has had long discussions with Maple Leafs general manager Cliff Fletcher and Vancouver Canucks general manager Mike Gillis. Barry said there are six teams interested in Sundin’s services for next season.
Barry also said his client has not made a decision on playing this coming season.

Free-agent center Mats Sundin has declared his interest in playing for the Rangers this season, well-connected sources have told The Post.
J.P. Barry, who represents the elite, 37-year-old former Toronto pivot, has been in constant communication with Rangers front-office personnel this week, The Post has learned, though the conversations have not reached the stage of a contract negotiation.
There have been no numbers exchanged between Sundin and the Rangers, who have approximately $2 million of cap space to spend on the 2008-09 roster.

Could Sundin Play In Sweden

Here’s another one: Mats Sundin returns to his mother club Djurgarden IF. Hold your breath, it’s only one rumor of many.
Is there one rumor about Mats Sundin that holds a truth? It is honoring for Swedish hockey a 37 year old veteran still creates so much interest that the whole National Hockey League and its followers is holding its breath where he will land. Well you might end up disappointed. I was talking yesterday to a person inside the Swedish Icehockey Organization who said Mats already has made up his mind, it’s only a matter of missing details.

Forget Sundin

from Adrian Dater at All Things Avs,
I don’t think you’ll see Mats come back to the organization that drafted him and he began his career with (yes, he is a former Nordique, a former teammate of Joe Sakic’s even)....
There’s no way the Avs are going to match that $10 million offer of Vancouver’s, if it came to that, even if Sakic retired. First off, $10 million is about all the Avs have under the salary cap right now, without having Sakic back. They’re not going to blow it all on a 39-year-old center whose best days are well behind him (and, yes, I’m talking about Sundin here, not Sakic!).
added 7:40am, from Paul Hunter of the Toronto Star,
While Sundin has remained mum on his future, observers in Sweden say his actions speak loudly.
For about the past 15 years, Sundin has been the organizer of informal summer skates among NHL players based in Sweden. Those workouts are set to begin Aug. 11 at the Globen Arena.
Normally, this is when Sundin would be working the phones, making sure his countrymen know about the available ice. This summer, however, that task has fallen to someone else and Sundin, though he is in Stockholm, isn’t expected to attend.
“He’s not working out. It doesn’t seem like he plans to, he’s just golfing,” said one source.
Barry said the retirement possibility is “why this whole consideration is taking so long.”

Sundin Decision Sometime In August
by Paul on 07/30/08 at 08:30 PM ET
Comments (0)
J.P. Barry was just on Team 1040 in Vancouver and said Sundin has yet to decide if he wants to play.
The timeframe for his decision is not August 1st, it is sometime in August. As Barry said, anytime in August, sometime before training camp starts.
Barry thinks more teams will get involved if Mats decides to play and right now it is six teams that have interest. Teams have called him and said, we will make room if you give us some time.
Barry said the Rangers are one team that will not go away and Detroit is not in the running.
added 9:22pm, from David Shoalts of the Toronto Globe and Mail,
The Canucks have that $10-million-a-year offer, but Sundin has never been motivated by money and it is hard to believe he would be willing to put up with all that travel on a non-contender.
So that may leave it between the Leafs and Rangers, who have cap room but are not a surefire Cup contender.
In any event, Sundin has to decide soon. A lot of NHL GMs are on vacation right now, but in the next couple of weeks, arbitration decisions on players will start coming in and the GMs will have to finalize their rosters. They simply won’t have time to wait any longer for Sundin’s decision.

Does Sundin Want To Play
by Paul on 07/29/08 at 08:01 PM ET

from Mark Spector of the National Post,
Right now, Sundin is like a guy who has paid $29.95 for brunch, but has no room left after a single plate. He sits in Sweden, knowing he is healthy enough to still play, knowing that the Vancouver Canucks two-year, US$20-million offer is something he should snap up, knowing there is a buffet table there for the pillaging.
But there is just one problem. Sundin isn’t hungry anymore.
Judging by the effect a lack of hunger for the game has had on the games of great players like Niedermayer, Selanne and Forsberg, why would a semi-committed Sundin fare any better?

Sundin Playing Too Well To Retire
by Paul on 07/23/08 at 08:00 AM ET
Comments (0)
from Jim Jamieson of the Vancouver Province,
“Mats has decided he will make a decision by Aug. 1,” Barry, of CAA Sports, said. “He hasn’t finally decided if he’s going to play or not, but he’s set the timetable. He needs to make the decision by then so he can be in training camp in September. He wants to be ready for that.”...
Barry said his gut feeling is that the 6-foot-5, 231-pound Sundin, who’s been a point-a-game player virtually every season of his NHL career, is still playing too well to retire.
“If he’s turned the corner one way or the other, he isn’t telling anyone yet,” said Barry. “But I told him that he’s still a top-five centreman in the NHL and he can help any team he goes to. It’s probably premature to not play at this point.”

In todays issue of aftonbladet there’s an interview with Sundin, I’ll try translating it here. Sorry for the somewhat rough translation but I’m in a rush for work!
There has been speculation about that you could be waiting until Autumn?
- No, I won’t be doing that. If I decide to continue with hockey I’ll make a decision in august, or maybe even in the end of this month. If I’m going to play it’s gonna be the entire season, I want to be there from the beginning, when the training camp starts.
Vancouver offered alot of money?
- Yes, it’s flattering and a fantastic offer. It’s nice that a club thinks I have that level of competence.

from Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe,
The Canucks remain hopeful that Mats Sundin will take the two-year, $20 million deal they’ve left on the table. Great spot, Vancouver, but the Canucks aren’t winning the Cup with Sundin, this year or next. If he wants to win, his only real option is to sign with the Red Wings, and take the kind of “championship discount” Marian Hossa accepted ($7.45 million per year). “Marian made it clear that he wanted to be with an elite team,” said one of the 29 NHL general managers who didn’t land the elite right wing. “And right now, it looks like there is only one elite team in the league.”

From Eric Duhatschek at the Globe & Mail,
Thirteen burning questions, answers and observations following a wild first week on the NHL free-agent front:
1. The Sundin saga.
Mats Sundin, the erstwhile Leaf, received much criticism for his dithering, which in one way, mirrored Marian Hossa’s decision not to chase every last dollar that’s out there. The two-year, $20 million offered by the Vancouver Canucks will likely disappear by early August, when Sundin finally determines he really, truly does want to play again, but it won’t matter because there’ll be a mini-Mats sweepstakes at that point anyway.

from Pierre LeBrun of the CP via Yahoo,
The Montreal Canadiens had hoped to sign Mats Sundin by Tuesday but that appears unlikely. Habs GM Bob Gainey exchanged e-mails with the 37-year-old star centre again over the weekend but to no avail.
“After thinking about things for quite a long time, and after listening to what Bob had to say, Mats still has not made a decision on whether he will play next season,” Sundin’s agent J.P. Barry told The Canadian Press on Monday. “He knows that there was a wonderful opportunity in Montreal and he’s very appreciative of the way that Bob handled the discussions over the past week.”
So Sundin, still unsure about his playing future, hits the unrestricted free-agent market Tuesday with Detroit and the New York Rangers among the teams expected to chase him along with Montreal.
“Mats has not closed any doors and will simply listen to all the options that are presented to him over the next while,” added Barry.

Pierre McGuire, on Mitch Melnick’s show this afternoon, says if the Canadiens have not signed Mats Sundin by July 1, he’s going to the Rangers.
The Montreal offer is attractive, McGuire says: two seasons, $7 million per. The fact Sundin has not jumped on it is significant.

From George Richards at On Frozen Pond in the Miami Herald:
Speaking of Mats [Sundin], the City of Sunrise has agreed to change its name to “Sundin, Florida” if Mats decides to sign with the Panthers. “No one knows where we’re at anyway,’’ one Sunrise official lamented. “Some people like to call us ‘North Weston’ or ‘South Tamarac.’ It doesn’t matter.’‘

Report- Sundin Wants To Play In New York
by Paul on 06/24/08 at 06:06 AM ET

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,
Sundin, the 37-year-old long-time Maple Leafs captain who can become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, has made it clear New York is his desired destination. Indeed, we’re told that the Rangers New York Rangers have held conversations with both the centerman and his representative, J.P. Barry, after having received permission to do so by Toronto.
added 6:27am, from Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun,
The Canadiens maintain exclusive rights to sign the Maple Leafs captain prior to free agency on July 1, but there is a growing feeling Sundin will let next Tuesday’s deadline pass and examine offers from the NHL at large.
In that case, count the Rangers in the hunt, as well as the Red Wings, who have about $12-million US in cap space to play with, but likely won’t pay Sundin more than their long-serving star Nicklas Lidstrom ($7.45 million).
A dark horse could be the Florida Panthers, who have an opening for a No. 1 centre and captain after Olli Jokinen was traded and an enthusiastic welcoming committee in ex-Leaf Wade Belak.
added 11:09am, from Bob McKenzie of TSN,
There has been much confusion over who has been permitted to speak and/or negotiate with Sundin and when that happened.
Sources tell TSN the timeline is as follows:
- The Maple Leafs met with Sundin and his agent J.P. Barry to indicate the club has interest in bringing Sundin back to Toronto. While no formal contract offer was made, Leafs’ GM Cliff Fletcher conveyed to Sundin that the team was prepared to pay him around $7 million on a one-year deal and that they wanted him back.

Mats In Demand

from Sportsnet,
The New York Rangers were granted permission by Maple Leafs general manager Cliff Fletcher to talk to free-agent-to-be Mats Sundin before the Montreal Canadiens were last week, Sportsnet has learned.
My opinion on this, which is only going to get bigger the next ten days, Mats doesn’t sign with anyone until after July 1st.
update 8:14pm, from Michael Traikos of the National Post,
There are other teams interested in Sundin - the New York Rangers and Detroit are believed to be among them - but Fletcher dismissed a Sportsnet report Monday that the Leafs had given the Rangers permission to talk to Sundin before giving the same opportunity to the Canadiens.
“That is absolutely untrue,” Fletcher said yesterday. “We gave exclusive negotiating rights to the Montreal Canadiens and nobody else.”
more on Sundin…
added 8:33pm, from Bob McKenzie of TSN,
The truth is, this is all happening too fast for Sundin, who doesn’t feel comfortable being pressured into deciding right now which NHL team he wants to play for because he hasn’t gone through his annual introspection of whether he is even going to play another season.

Sundin Can Wait

from Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun,
Those close to him doubt he will retire, let alone come back to the Leafs. He is said to still be miffed at Toronto management for simply not coming out and saying: “Mats does not want to be traded and will not be traded” weeks before the Feb. 26 trade deadline instead of allowing the speculation to drag out in public as it did.
Keeping that in mind, why would he now want to do the Leafs any favours by coming to terms with the Canadiens prior to the opening of the unrestricted free agent period one week from tomorrow?
Were he to do that, the Leafs would receive compensation from the Habs as part of a conditional deal that already is in place.
Why not, instead, wait to go on the open market July 1?

Wooing Sundin
by Paul on 06/22/08 at 08:15 AM ET

from Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun,
While Gainey usually wears a poker face whenever prodded to reveal such plans, a source close to the Habs GM suggested he might wing across the Atlantic for a face-to-face chat with Sundin as early as Wednesday.
Whatever Gainey does, this much is certain: The two teams do have a deal in place in the event Sundin signs with Montreal. There is speculation that Toronto might receive a 2009 first-round pick in return, but that, to this point, is merely draft-floor speculation.
About 15 minutes before Gainey had his chat with the hordes of reporters at Scotiabank Place yesterday, Leafs general manager Cliff Fletcher was being peppered with Sundin queries of his own.
“I talked (to Mats),” Fletcher said. “I just have to do my job and do what’s best for the Toronto Maple Leafs. It is what it is.

Decision Time For Sundin
by Paul on 06/20/08 at 10:55 PM ET

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
In some ways, Gainey shares many of the same qualities as Sundin. They are both soft-spoken, resolute and like to do things in orderly fashion.
Accordingly, the first order of business for Sundin is to determine if he’s going to play at all next year. Thus far, he has not provided his agent, J.P. Barry, with any guidance along those lines. Until he does, all the other talk is just a lot of white noise.
from Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette,
We received permission to talk with him late yesterday and it was even later in Sweden,” said Gainey. “We didn’t talk numbers. We wanted to introduce ourselves and we got to know a little bit about each other and we’ll get to know each other better.”
Gainey said he planned to have additional talks with Sundin tomorrow or Monday.
Sundin would give the Canadiens the impact centre they have been seeking. He’s 6-foot-5 and 231 pounds and has been one of the NHL’s elite players since he arrived from Sweden to join the Quebec Nordiques in 1990. He’s 37 but he’s coming off a 76-point season and has had at least 72 points in each of the past 12 seasons.

Report- Habs To Talk With Sundin

from Darren Dreger of TSN,
Sources tell TSN the Toronto Maple Leafs are trying to encourage Mats Sundin to decide his playing future before July 1.
In the past 24 hours the Montreal Canadiens were granted persmission by the Maple Leafs to speak to Sundin’s agent about the possibility of the 37-year-old signing in Montreal.
Update 3:45pm ET (alanah): For a blast from the past, below is a video of Sundin when he was selected in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft. I don’t think I would’ve even recognized him…

All the news from Spector:
Thankfully we’ll know in about three weeks what Sundin will do, putting an end to months of speculation over his future. I still have my doubts that the Leafs will buyout Tucker but I am convinced Raycroft will be bought out. As for Redden, why would the Leafs want him?

Mats Fits In Detroit

from Marty Henwood at Hockey.com,
Think of it this way. Sundin could sign in Detroit and be part of another charge for a Cup from opening day. IKEA could set up corporate offices in Joe Louis Arena. ABBA belts out the national anthem each night. Victoria Silvstedt could join the Wings staff, as, uh, well, as whatever she wants, really.
Welcome to Stockholm, USA.
Or Sundin could stay in Toronto, wallow in mediocrity for another seven months and - get this - take Leaf management up on their rather dubious offer.

from David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail,
Will Mats Sundin commit the ultimate act of betrayal in the eyes of Toronto Maple Leafs fans and bolt as a free agent this summer, possibly to the Montreal Canadiens?
KK will not become the Mats Sundin network. As many of you know, this type of story will continue to grow and grow until Mats make his decision. We will pick and choose carefully when pointing to Sundin stories.
Update 12:12pm ET: (alanah) To hear Sundin’s comments for yourself, they’re on video from the Canadian Press.

NEW YORK (May 28, 2008) – Toronto Maple Leafs center Mats Sundin has been named the recipient of the Mark Messier Leadership Award for the 2007-08 season in recognition for his outstanding performance as a player, his leadership skills and his dedicated humanitarian efforts.
“The truest test of leadership comes during periods of adversity,” said Messier. “When presented with difficult times during the season, Mats Sundin remained committed to his teammates, his community and to the game of hockey. I am honored to present the Mark Messier Leadership Award to Mats Sundin. He understands the importance of his status in Toronto and his dedication to his community is unmatched. The strength of his character makes Mats a tremendous role model both on and off the ice.”

Return Of Sundin Won’t Help The Leafs
by Paul on 04/04/08 at 08:36 AM ET

from Damien Cox of the Toronto Star,
Their “core” has been exposed as flaccid and wildly overpaid. Their management has been discredited and banished, with the team now left indefinitely in the hands of a man fired by the same team a decade ago.
For the next two to three years the Leafs will continue to make enormous profits, ownership will remain essentially absentee in its approach, a new management team will attempt to sort out the club’s chronic problems and there won’t be a Stanley Cup final appearance, let alone a Cup parade.
Sundin isn’t going to change any of that whether he returns or doesn’t. He’s still capable of being a difference maker. Just not to this 23rd-place Toronto hockey club.
