Questioning The Ohlund Contract

from Tony Gallagher of the Vancouver Province,

He’ll be 33 by the time training camp finishes this fall and when his agent began with an opening salvo of $5 million per for five years, Vancouver quickly determined he was too rich for their blood. It wasn’t fair to everyone else on his own team to pay that much.

But not Tampa. Not a team that sells $10 tickets and each year begs for NHL revenue sharing so that Vancouver fans, who so generously contribute to the fund, can shell out for such a team to take their better players. And take them at numbers which are so staggering, you’re left wondering about this league and the fairness of the collective bargaining agreement.

Ohlund’s deal begins with him making $4 million in the first two years, which is great, perhaps just about bang on where he should be, although the $2 million paid in signing bonus seems a bit over the top.

But then it turns into a pyramid, and Matty is mighty grateful to the Egyptians for conceiving of such a structure. At age 35, he’ll begin the third year at a cool $5.5 million and follow that up at 36 with another $5 million....

But here’s the kicker. How the hell do you agree to a contract structured so bizarrely 15 minutes into free agency without any tampering going on?

Tampa Bay signed Mattias Ohlund

added 12:19pm, via Tampa Bay Lightning official Twitter,

USA Today’s Kevin Allen is reporting the Lightning have signed defenseman Mattias Ohlund. No confirmation from the team.

added 12:22pm, Bob McKenzie of TSN confimed deal. 7yr deal $3.75M cap hit.

added 12:56pm, from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,

Last year, the Tampa Bay Lightning were the stars of the opening day of the free-agent season – and ended up signing so many new players that they had ultimately had 18 forwards on one-way contracts by the time training camp opened.

This year, the Lightning were also first off the mark, signing ex-Canucks’ defenceman Mattias Ohlund to a new contract. The move was done strictly to help fellow Swede Victor Hedman, their 18-year-old first-round draft choice, adapt more easily to the NHL.

Ohlund Talk Won’t Stop

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,

The Senators could be stepping up their pursuit of defenceman Mattias Ohuld (Ohlund).

Vancouver Canucks GM Mike Gillis and assistant Lawrence Gilman were on the list of scouts for last night’s Senators-Rangers game at Madison Square Garden and GM Bryan Murray hasn’t made any secret of the fact he’s looking for a puck-moving defenceman.

While the Gillis’ Canucks were playing across town on Long Island, it’s believed contract talks with Ohlund have been fruitless and if they continue to go nowhere, he might be asked to waive his no-movement clause to accept a deal elsewhere.

Sens Linked To Ohlund

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,

The Senators have been linked heavily to Vancouver D Mattias Ohlund, a potential unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. If he doesn’t sign an extension with the Canucks soon—and talk is there hasn’t been any discussions—then he could get moved.

Ohlund Wants To Stay In Vancouver

from the CP via the Sporting News,

Ohlund sidestepped the question of whether he would waive his no-trade clause.

“I’ve never been asked,” he said. “As far as I know, I’ll be here.”

He could fetch a lucrative new deal with another team in the offseason, because many teams would covet his offensive prowess and defensive dependability.

While open to moving on, he is also willing to negotiate a new deal with Vancouver during the season.

Meanwhile, Ohlund’s more immediate concerns are to help the Canucks return to the playoffs—and rebound from one of the most difficult seasons in his career.

Game Alert- One Day Early

from the Vancouver Province,

The Vancouver Canucks may start a three-game road trip in Edmonton tonight, but the focus is already on what’s shaping up as a grudge match Wednesday in Minnesota.

That would be the second half of a home-and-home series with the Wild, whom the Canucks drubbed 6-2 Friday at GM Place in a game that got very ugly. After a variety of elbows and chops, Canucks defenceman Mattias Ohlund two-handed Wild centre Mikko Koivu on the ankle, cracking a bone and earning himself a four-game suspension.

Wrong Call On Ohlund

from Scott Burnside of ESPN,

But we care not what Koivu did. You want to suspend Koivu for the elbow? Go ahead. Of course, it’s a moot point given that he has a broken leg.

Did we mention that? A broken leg. In the mind of NHL czar of discipline Colin Campbell, that equals four games or a paltry 5 percent of the season.

Given that Campbell went all soft on Randy Jones a couple of weeks ago by giving the Philadelphia defenseman just two games for a hit from behind that may have ended Boston Bruins center Patrice Bergeron’s season, four games seems just about right on the NHL’s sliding scale of mayhem.

Nastiness Between Minnesota & Vancouver

From Michael Russo at the Star-Tribune,

If Mattias Ohlund is suspended, it would happen before tomorrow because Vancouver has a game.

It’ll be an interesting decision. After seeing the replay again more closely well after game, one wonders if league disciplinarian Colin Campbell will take into account Ohlund was reacting to Koivu’s attempted elbow.

I would think he would want to suspend him to perhaps keep Wednesdays rematch more civil and to also keep Ohlund safe.

Also, ill tell you what, after looking at Marian Gaborik’s elbow on Ryan Kesler again, he’s lucky he didn’t get a major. It was a leap at Kesler’s head.
