HNIC Goes For The Big Time Look
by Paul on 10/11/07 at 09:51 PM ET

from William Houston of the Globe and Mail,
Najak says Hockey Night, which stayed with the same programming for more than 10 years, needed a change.
“And the thing is, change doesn’t come without some pain,” he said. “If we had come back with [the previous Hot Stove panel of sportswriters], we wouldn’t have had the energy. I’m not averse to taking risk, and the only way to get some gain is to be unafraid.”...
The objective, Najak said, is to separate the show from the standard hockey telecast — to be different yet entertaining.
“This show has to be representative of the people who watch it,” he said. “And a lot of Canadians don’t like being yelled at. I don’t want it to be like the regular sports show. I want to be big time on Saturday nights. That’s what we’re going for and that’s what we’re going to get to.”

Changing Game Times
by Alanah McGinley on 10/09/07 at 01:50 PM ET

From Tim Wharnsby on the Globe & Mail blog,
So the Leafs-Hurricanes game has an opening puck drop of 7:07 p.m. tonight to accommodate the U.S. network, Versus. We love it. Thirty minutes earlier translates into finishing sooner and possibly having an extra post-game beverage.
Seriously, though, the earlier start does help us newspaper guys. Even though there have been so many technological advances in the past 30 years, newspaper deadlines have been stuck in the same rut. On most occasions when the Leafs weekday home games begin at 7:30 p.m., I don’t have time to stick around to hear the wisdom of Toronto coach Paul Maurice because I have to return to the press box to file my rewrite by 11:05 p.m.

Stupid Questions
by Alanah McGinley on 10/09/07 at 12:36 PM ET

From David Shoalts on his Globe & Mail blog,
Blake has the good fortune, if you can call it that, that it was caught in the chronic, or earliest stage, and can be treated with a drug called Gleevec and he is not expected to miss even one game for the Maple Leafs.
But he had the misfortune of having Damien Goddard of Sportsnet attend his press conference.
Goddard asked Blake if cancer put his “mini-slump” into perspective. Blake, who scored 40 goals for the New York Islanders last season, had yet to score in three games for the Leafs.
As jaws in the Leafs’ media centre dropped, Blake looked incredulous.

The Issue Of Digital Rights
by Paul on 10/08/07 at 09:49 AM ET

from SportsBusiness Journal (paid reg.),
MSG Chairman James Dolan is often viewed as an industry pariah, a notion no doubt burnished by his defeat last week in the Anucha Browne Sanders sexual harassment lawsuit.
But surprisingly, the argument of Dolan, MSG and the New York Rangers — if not the methods — are garnering support from other NHL clubs and regional sports networks in their legal fight against the NHL for control over digital rights….
“There’s some feeling around the league that says, ‘Good for them,’” a team executive said. “There’s some downside to the league saying, ‘Boom. Here’s your (Web site) format.’ Teams have been hurt by that and aren’t getting satisfaction.”
“We think digital rights can be best exploited on a team-by-team basis locally through the team and its local media partners,” said an executive at an RSN with NHL rights after asking for anonymity because of the ongoing lawsuit.

In the Coach’s Corner
by Alanah McGinley on 10/07/07 at 02:32 PM ET

From the Edmonton Sun,
Don Cherry thinks Steve Downie got off easy.
The outspoken commentator said Downie should have been suspended 30 games for his preseason hit on Dean McAmmond during Saturday night’s segment of Coach’s Corner on CBC’s Hockey Night In Canada.
Cherry called the hit by the Philadelphia Flyers forward on the Senators defenceman a “cheap shot” and added that players shouldn’t hit like that in the preseason.
Video of Cherry’s comments can be viewed on the CBC video player. There is no direct link, but just click on the “Hockey Night in Canada” link on the left, then the sub-menu will provide a link to the October 6th edition of Coach’s Corner.
note: unfortunately, U.S. viewers may not be able to access the video, unless you have a way of accessing the page using a Canadian proxy IP.

HNIC Debut Review
by Alanah McGinley on 10/07/07 at 01:41 AM ET
Comments (0)
From William Houston at the Globe & Mail,
It was pretty, but, at times, it was pretty boring, too.
We’re talking about Hockey Night In Canada’s Saturday night debut with its new look and programming changes. The new studio, consisting of leather chairs and a mahogany coffee table in front of a large screen, looks clubby. Visually, it was elegant and also a little staid.
When the conversation is also staid, that’s a problem. It’s a hockey telecast, after all, not Masterpiece Theatre.

Bettman Mentions ESPN

Garry Bettman was in Atlanta last night and answered a few questions regarding the game, the Thrashers, etc…
from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution,
Q: What do you see ahead as far as TV deals?
A: We have great partnerships with NBC and [cable network] Versus. ... There have been reports that ESPN is interested in us. ... I do believe our current partners will be in the picture long-term. Whether or not there is an opportunity to have another partner is something we’re always open to looking at.

Milbury Impressive
by Paul on 10/04/07 at 09:49 AM ET
Comments (0)
from William Houston of the Globe and Mail,
On Wednesday night, Mike Milbury charged into the raging goaltending controversy in Toronto by stating that the Maple Leafs’ decision to start Andrew Raycroft in the opener instead of Vesa Toskala was “absolutely crazy.”
The move “plants seeds of doubt,” he said, in the Toskala, whom the Leafs paid a heavy price to acquire, presumably to be the starting goalie….
But, there was no disputing the quality of his work as a studio analyst on TSN game telecasts. He was excellent. He has a strong presence, is confidently opinionated and brings plenty of colour to his commentary.

First Coach Fired…
by Paul on 10/02/07 at 03:52 PM ET
Comments (0)
from Jim Kelley at Sportsnet,
Look, I love The Hockey News and not just because I tend to agree with their thinking and they tend to agree (within reason) with my preseason picks.
But if there’s one area we tend to differ regarding the upcoming season, it’s who will be the first coach fired.
The consensus in the latest edition of “The Bible,” is that the first coach whacked will be Tampa Bay’s John Tortorella. The magazine came to that conclusion by polling their 30 correspondents, six “colleagues” from the Globe and Mail and some senior staff members….
Add it all up and I’d argue that Tortorella has a better shot at keeping his job longer than Atlanta’s Bob Hartley, Washington’s Glen Hanlon, Montreal’s Guy Carbonneau, Edmonton’s Craig MacTavish, Dallas’ Dave Tippett or even Phoenix’s Wayne Gretzky.

Hockey Fans Well-Wired
by Alanah McGinley on 10/02/07 at 12:25 PM ET

Since everyone reading these words is either reading them on this blog or via some rss feedreader, the audience here might be a bit biased in believing hockey fans are very tech-knowledgeable. But in this instance, your bias is absolutely correct—NHL hockey fans are indeed very well-wired.
From the Sports Business Journal on Monday, October 1 (sorry, no link. subscription only):
The NHL has long asserted that its fans are the most tech-savvy in sports. Exclusive data provided to Sports Business Journal by Scarborough Sports Marketing seems to support that belief. Twenty-four percent of NHL loyal fans live in households that own an HDTV and more than seventy percent have a broadband connection (cable or dsl) at home.

Foster Hewitt: The Voice of Hockey
by Alanah McGinley on 09/28/07 at 08:45 PM ET
Comments (0)
From Investor’s Business Daily,
“The first broadcast nearly ended in disaster,” Hewitt wrote in a 1928 Toronto Star article titled “Who Wouldn’t Be A Sport Announcer!” “When I finally did get in and closed the door, all the air was cut off. In a few minutes my head started to go round.”
Despite Hewitt’s difficulty catching air that night, listeners immediately loved the picture of the game he painted orally.
The next day, thousands clamored radio station CFCA for more. A decade later, in the 1934 playoffs, 6 million people would be tuning in to hear his voice.
“The impact he’s had on Canada has almost been a religious one,” Chuck Kaiton, president of the NHL Broadcasters’ Association and the announcer for the Carolina Hurricanes, told IBD.

(*Hewitt called the famous 1972 Paul Henderson goal, referenced earlier today on KK.)

Don’t Write That
by Paul on 09/28/07 at 07:43 AM ET
Comments (0)
via Sports Media Watch,
ESPN has edited a column by SportsCenter anchor and hockey writer John Buccigross to no longer include a reference to a potential reunion between the network and the National Hockey League.
Buccigross, writing the season debut of his weekly hockey column, speculated that ESPN would gain the rights to air National Hockey League games for the first time since 2004.
“NHL players want it, the NHL wants it and ESPN wants it,” Buccigross wrote, “NBC and Versus somewhat holds the cards however, so we will have to wait and see; but my guess is yes. ESPN will have a piece of the pie.”
thanks to a KK member for the pointer…
added 10:13am, via William Houston of the Globe and Mail,
If something is close between the NHL and ESPN (with consent from Versus), it’s perhaps understandable that ESPN would keep a lid on speculation from within.
It’s not good journalism, but it might be good for business.

Enough Travelling

from the Buffalo News,
Buffalo Sabres managing partner Larry Quinn said he wasn’t the only one surprised when TV and radio analyst Jim Lorentz decided to retire Tuesday.
“It sounds like he was, too,” Quinn said Tuesday night from New York City. “It happens to a lot of athletes before the start of a season. You look in the mirror and say, ‘I can’t go anymore.’ It happened to Jim. I don’t think Jim knew really until it was time to get on a plane back to Buffalo.”
Quinn said he believed Lorentz remains at his summer home in Newfoundland, where he enjoys fishing after the season ends. Quinn added that Lorentz telephoned before the preseason games began to say he wouldn’t be there at the start. He called again Monday to say he was retiring because he had enough of the traveling after 43 years as a player and broadcaster.

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,
Broadcast booths throughout the NHL are chock-a-block full of former players working as colour commentators, but Randy Moller is taking one giant leap for microphone mankind by actually calling the games for the Florida Panthers this season.
Moller, who grew up in Red Deer, was the 11th overall player picked in the ‘81 draft, going to the Quebec Nordiques. The defenceman played more than 800 NHL games, winding up his career in Florida in the mid 90s.
He’s worked as a host and colour guy on the radio games as the Panthers’ VP of broadcasting and will now be the first former player to call games full-time.

via Adam Proteau of the Hockey News,
Speaking of the Sabres/Penguins “Winter Classic,” I’m having a hard time agreeing with some prominent hockey scribes who wonder whether another outdoor game is a case of the league going to the well one too many times.
Fellas, this is only the second one. In four freakin’ years. Another Rolling Stones tour this is not.
In Adam’s blog today, there is now a reason for me to attempt to get media credentials for a Kings game in LA.

Aaron Ward Not Too Happy
by Paul on 09/17/07 at 11:34 AM ET
Comments (0)
from Adam Proteau of the Hockey News,
Another day, another story on The Hockey News’ pre-season predictions – and the fury they generate in some people and players.
This time, it’s Boston defenseman Aaron Ward whose UnderArmor is in a twist. Apparently, he’s none too pleased we picked the Bruins to finish last in the Eastern Conference this season.
“There’s a reason why (those writers) are not putting skates on,” said Ward, employing the incomparably lame “Youse-guys-ain’t-NHLers-and-therefore-can’t-comment-on-nuthin’ ” argument. “And if (writers) really knew what they were doing, they wouldn’t be writing in Toronto or Montreal or New York. They’d be in Vegas, putting their money where their mouth is.”

The Outdoor Game

from the Buffalo News,
League executives will gather at Ralph Wilson Stadium this afternoon to trumpet the first NHL game to be played outdoors in the United States, one that should shatter the league’s attendance record. The Sabres will host the Pittsburgh Penguins at 1 p.m. Jan. 1 in the home of the Bills.
NBC, one of the league’s television partners, has been pushing for a marquee New Year’s Day event, Collins said. The holiday is one of the busiest days of the year for television use. It traditionally has been an afternoon of college football bowl games for sports fans, but since the advent of the Bowl Championship Series to determine a national champion, most of the top games are on other days.
The league views that as an ideal time to attract fans.
“It will really build a national and North American platform for the league,” Collins (NHL Sr. VP) said. “There’s a lot of interest in the game.”
