Afternoon Line

Always fun to see familiar faces among the Montreal press corps. Several were camped out at the Bruins’ hotel, waiting to speak with ex-Canadien Michael Ryder.

“How was Ryder?” I asked one of them.

“All smiles,” cracked one of the reporters. “He signed for $12 million after scoring 14 goals. He should be all smiles.”

Hockey Media Fantasy Camp

From Mike Vogel at the Washington Capitals,

Virtually every kid in America has played catch with a baseball and a glove, and tried to hit pitched balls. Almost all have shot a few hoops in their day, and almost all have thrown a football around. But not nearly as many have laced up a pair of hockey skates, taken to the ice shot a few pucks around. That may be why ice hockey is among the least understood of the major sports; some of the people writing about it have never played the sport.

With that in mind, the Washington Capitals hosted the team’s first media fantasy camp at Kettler Capitals Iceplex on Tuesday. A large contingent of print and electronic media from both local and national media outlets took to the ice for some instruction in the finer points of the game from several Caps players and coaches.

Barry Melrose vs Tampa Fans

From Craig Custance at the Sporting News,

SN: What was the reaction in Tampa from fans when you were hired?

Melrose: A lot of people there were still mad at me for 2004. Supposedly, I made derogatory remarks about Tampa Bay. If people remember you saying it, it doesn’t matter if you said it. That was fun. [...]

SN: So what did you supposedly say in 2004 that has fans in Tampa so riled up?

Melrose: That Tampa didn’t have a chance (in the Stanley Cup final), not nearly as good as Calgary. That was nuts—I picked Tampa Bay. I don’t know what was going on. If they think you said it, you said it.

Hockey Fans Can Be Scary

Adam Proteau talks to Carrie Milbank of The Hockey Show and asks what it was like starting her new job.

“Honestly, I was so scared at first,” said Milbank, who has been working in broadcasting since 2003. “I really wanted The Hockey Show job, and when I got it, I was like, ‘uh-oh, what am I going to do?’ Because not only was I scared of the players, I was scared of the fans, because they’re so intense.

“So I bought the book Hockey For Dummies. I bought The Smart Girl’s Guide To Sports to help me prepare. But talking to the guys and being around the game really helps you get to know what hockey’s all about.

Top 10 NHL Arenas

Last week, Erik Erlendsson at the Bolts Report listed his favorite road stops in the NHL.  This week he rethinks his top-10 list by evaluating his favorite arenas:

10 Columbus (Nationwide Arena) - Right about now, you’re probably thinking I’m being geographically challenged again, after all, how can an arena in Columbus make a top 10 list? Well, like I said earlier, it’s my list and my opinion and I like Columbus. I’ve only been there a couple of times, including the 2007 draft, but I just like the way it feels. It’s a bit different on the inside, which gives it a touch of uniqueness. [...]

Nationwide Arena might have ended up higher on my list had it not been for that ear piercing cannon used last year each time the Jackets scored a goal.

Future of the NY Rangers

From Greg Wyshynski at Puck Daddy,

So was there a glimmer of hope today for New York Rangers fans tired of their ownership situation? Cablevision said it was “considering several options to boost its stock price including spinning off some of its diverse holdings,” according to the Associated Press. Andrew Zimbalist, a sports economist with Smith College, told the AP that if the contracts between the two teams, cable television and MSG could be sussed out, the Knicks would be worth about $500 million and the Rangers $300.

Are the Rangers a “spinoff” candidate? The Dolans aren’t saying. John Moag, chairman of the sports investment bank Moag & Co., tells Bloomberg that the Dolans’ sports teams and MSG itself could bring in almost $2 billion if Cablevision does decide to sell.

Hockey Blogging Went Mainstream

Last week we mentioned this story in USA Hockey Magazine that was already on newsstands, but not yet on the internet.  Now it’s available online.

From Ricki Dugdale at USA Hockey Magazine:

Today’s bloggers are gaining acceptance among mainstream media, in part because professional journalists have learned that if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em.

The rising popularity of blogs has forced mainstream media to re-evaluate which direction coverage is heading in the near future as fingers stay glued to the keyboard and eyes stay fixed on a computer screen.

“I think [blogging] sort of changed how we approached coverage of events,” said Kevin Allen, president of the Professional Writer’s Association and USA Today’s hockey writer. “Instead of just reporting what happened in the news we are interpreting it quickly, and we have been forced to do it by the amateur bloggers.”

Best of Hockey Blogs

USA Hockey Magazine recently came out on news stands with their August edition, which includes a feature on the hockey blogging world. The article should be available online soon.

Milbury to Join Hockey Night in Canada

From CBC:

Hockey Night in Canada will welcome a familiar face and opinionated hockey mind next season, with Mike Milbury joining the show as an analyst.

Milbury, who has spent over 30 years in the NHL as a player, coach and general manager, will also be a regular contributor to the Hot Stove segment on HNIC.

“We’re very pleased to welcome Mike to our talented broadcast team,” HNIC executive producer Sherali Najak said in a statement. “His experience as an NHL player and executive is reflected in an entertaining on-air style. We look forward to his honest opinions and knowledge on what’s happening around the NHL on a weekly basis.”

Update 3:53pm ET: Speaking of Milbury’s “entertaining style,” that sort of demands we point to this video (embedded below). The footage is terrible, but somewhere in that muck you can see #28 beating a hockey fan with his own shoe…

Leafs Still Waiting on Frogren Deal

Earlier today were reports on AM 640 in Toronto, citing a Swedish newspaper which stated Jonas Frogren had been signed by the Maple Leafs.  But during the noon hour, Frogren himself gave an interview to FAN 590 and made no mention there was any contract in place yet.  (Which is why we didn’t post the news on KK before now.)

Now this from TSN:

The Toronto Maple Leafs had hoped to announce the signing of Swedish defenceman Jonas Frogren on Wednesday but the contract was rejected by the NHL’s head office.

“We are working with the NHL Players’ Association to resolve the matter,” said Don Meehan of Newport Sports, Frogren’s agent. “We remain hopeful it will get resolved.”

The league determined Frogren, 28, must be signed to an entry-level contract as a first-year NHL player despite his pro experience in Europe. The Leafs had signed Frogren to a standard contract.

Busy Day in Hockey

From Paul Kukla at NHL.com,

While many of you will be sitting back and keeping tabs on all of the UFA movement, some of us will be hard at work.  How hard will we be working, well I went to Lyle Richardson, aka Spector and asked him what his UFA days will consist of.

How busy will you be Lyle?

The NHL’s unrestricted free agency period is one of the busiest times of year for me, topping even the NHL trade deadline for sheer volume of traffic. It’s the first two days that are the most hectic as that’s when the bidding for, and the signing of, the top UFA players is at its most frenzied. I’m almost a shut-in during those two days, rarely venturing outside my home as I track the rumors and signings.

much more…

Blaming Hockey Bloggers

From Tom Benjamin at Canucks Corner:

Iain McIntyre tries to explain why so many stories printed in the run up to the draft turned out to be so much crap. Among other explanations - like the unsurprising revelation that general managers lie - we get this:

[T]he [Ryan Malone trade] story got ahead of the facts. That happens frequently in the Age of the Blogger, who has chewed down the standards of journalism the way the pine beetle has decimated B.C. forests.

I was one of only a few hockey bloggers when I first started with this hobby and I can say without any equivocation that the standards of hockey journalism had been decimated long before anybody considered us to be part of a new age. Bloggers haven’t really changed anything.

NHL Entry Draft 2008 Liveblog

5:26pm—Erin:  Zach Bogosian, on his travels to Ottawa and the surrounding areas to train…

“I’ve been coming up here 4-5 days a week – it’s pretty bad on gas, but it’s worked for me for the past couple of years.  Obviously (fitness guru) Lorne Goldenberg has trained some great players like Gary Roberts and Cory Stillman – he helps me out a lot.  That’s one of the main reasons why I’ve succeeded over the past few years – he made my body ready for the rigours of the NHL.”

Meet the Press: Patrick Williams

Today is the opening of the NHL Entry Draft, and Erin Nicks and Patrick Williams are covering the event in Ottawa for Kukla’s Korner. Earlier this week we asked Erin a few questions about her life and love of hockey, and today it’s Patrick’s turn.

Patrick is the ideal journalist to cover the NHL’s draft weekend, given how much time he spends with and writing about the up-and-coming stars.  His beat is the American Hockey League—writing for the likes of Slam! Sports and The Hockey News, among others—and so he’ll be seeing a lot of some of these draft picks in the coming years as they rise into the AHL and beyond.

Patrick, what is the main difference between working in the media in the NHL and AHL?
Everything in the NHL is a lot more tense, and the egos (and not simply those belonging to the players) are decidedly larger.

Movie Madness

imageA press release just reminded me that The Love Guru opens on Friday.  Which was almost a surprise, to be honest—Given the magnitude of coverage the hockey blogs have given that film in recent weeks, one could almost be forgiven for thinking the movie had been in theaters for a month already.

Anyway, while I’ll confess to personally getting a bit sick of reading about the movie, I still look forward to actually seeing it.  Always cool when hockey arrives on the big screen.

So—courtesy of that previously mentioned press release—here’s a short scene featuring Mike Myers and Romany Malco... plus some dude who probably wasn’t paid nearly enough cash to drive that zamboni.

Toronto’s Brain Trust

From Dan Wood at Ducks Blog,

Burke, though, isn’t the only name being bandied about by the out-of-control Toronto media. Reporters who cover the Leafs have also mentioned Doug Wilson of the San Jose Sharks, David Poile of the Nashville Predators, Darcy Regier of the Buffalo Sabres, Doug Risebrough of the Minnesota Wild, Jim Rutherford of the Carolina Hurricanes, Jay Feaster of the Tampa Bay Lightning and even Ken Holland of the Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings. Along with Burke, that’s more than 25 percent of the general managers in the league, and the supposed logic is that any or all of them could become available after next season.

If nothing else, Toronto’s “brain trust” has given all of these men tremendous leverage to negotiate new contracts with their current clubs. Even worse, the Leafs brass has created more than one potential conflict-of-interest scenario. What if, for example, any of these general managers happens to swing a trade with Toronto, particularly if the deal might be construed as somewhat one-sided in either the short- or long-term? You think that might just raise some eyebrows at NHL headquarters?

NHL Awards Gala Tonight

imageFrom CBC:

The best performers in the NHL this past season will be honoured at the league’s annual awards show Thursday night in Toronto, with host Ron MacLean also announcing the 2009 location for the ninth annual presentation of Hockey Day in Canada.

The show will feature a performance by Canadian folk legend and hockey lover Stompin’ Tom Connors, and presenters will include Hockey Hall of Fame members Mike Bossy, Bob Gainey, Billy Smith and Red Kelly.

The event will be broadcast by CBC and Versus.  There may be a live feed available online of the red carpet interviews, in which case that will be posted on KK.  Also, Bill and the 19 will be liveblogging their way through the evening, and I’ll be adding updates here on the main hockey page of KK.

Out of curiosity, how popular is the NHL’s big award show with hockey fans?

Chatting with Carrie Milbank

Orland Kurtenblog at The Province hooks up an interview with Carrie Milbank of NHL.com’s The Hockey Show.

imageFrom their conversation:

KB: Did you grow up a hockey fan or has this been one of those steep-learning-curve kind of things?

CM: I was deprived of hockey when I was a kid. I’m from Houston, Texas, where it’s a sin to put any other sport above football. But I’ll admit that while I was growing up and everyone else was playing Super Mario Bros., I was dominating Blades Of Steel on my Nintendo. I would spend hours playing that game and I always wanted to be Montreal. I loved it when the computer would yell ‘Faceoff!’ and my favorite part was starting a fist fight with the other team…I always won of course.

The Economy and Sports TV Ratings

From Toni Fitzgerald at The Sentinel,

Yet the hockey bump could also be part of a greater revival for sports TV ratings in 2008 after years and years of declines.

The Super Bowl drew its biggest audience ever in February. National Basketball Association postseason ratings have boomed one year after its finals also hit an all-time low last June. NASCAR ratings are up this year on Fox.

Even viewership for the WNBA has jumped this year compared to last. Heck, that, along with the hockey spike and the coming cicada invasion this summer, may have people screaming “end of the world” very soon.

I’m no psychologist, or even a sociologist, but I also think this trend tells us a little bit about the country’s psyche.  I believe that in uncertain times, which would describe our economy right now, people get a certain comfort from the familiar. And there’s nothing more familiar than vegging out and watching sports, even if it’s not a sport you usually follow.

Stepping into the Spotlight (Updated)

From Lance Hornby at the Toronto Sun,

Local TV stations have been running clips of Ron Wilson snapping at the media to underline the thorny side of the projected new coach of the Maple Leafs.

Wilson has coached more than 1,000 games, all in what can be termed non-traditional hockey markets: Anaheim, Washington and San Jose. Sensitive to being second-guessed, even for an NHL coach, Wilson never has faced four newspapers and four all-sports electronic outlets on a daily basis—and that would be just daily practices.

But Cliff Fletcher, who hopes to have Wilson under contract by Monday, is confident his man won’t burn in the atmosphere of the alleged centre of the hockey universe.

more odds & ends on the Leafs

Note: Tonight, TSN states that Fletcher and Wilson are set to meet again Sunday to iron out some issues, with the likelihood they’ll announce a 4-year term for Wilson within days.

Update 10:01am ET June 8th: Ron Wilson has reportedly been hired, but with the formal announcement expected on Tuesday.

Update 3:23pm ET June 8th: From the CP via the Globe & Mail,

“We have a verbal agreement but nothing’s on paper yet,” Leafs interim GM Cliff Fetcher told The Canadian Press on Sunday. “It isn’t a contract until it’s signed by the parties. And that won’t happen for a couple of days.”

Behind the Scenes

From Simon Dingley at CBC’s Stanley Cup Playoff Blog,

It is something few reporters experience.

Behind the scenes, at the Stanley Cup final. Outside the winning team’s dressing room in the moments leading up to the trophy being awarded.

Wednesday night during the second period of Game 6, I parked myself beside the Red Wings’ room at Pittsburgh’s Mellon Arena. Usually I cover NHL games from the press box. But I feared if I didn’t get down to the Wings’ room early, I may not get in at all because of the huge crush of media.

Fan for a Moment

imagePhotographer David Guralnick of the Detroit News treated himself to a drink from the Stanley Cup last night and posted this photo on their website.  Captioning the original image, Guralnick remarked:

Back during the 2002 Cup celebration, I passed on an opportunity to drink from the Stanley Cup. I always regretted it. So when the Cup came my way in the locker room Wednesday night, I wasn’t going to pass it up again.

But from Puck Daddy, a problem:

His industry peers on SportsJournalists.com are debating the ethics of his actions, with the initial post calling it “particularly fan-boy homerish.”

C’mon ... it’s the Stanley Cup. People love the Stanley Cup. [...] The key phrase in Guralnick’s caption: ” ... when the Cup came my way in the locker room.” In other words, he wasn’t asking for it. Something glorious gets passed your way, you don’t turn it down.

I’d have to agree. If those are indeed Mr. Guralnick’s “industry peers”, they need to get over it. The world of ethical journalism is not rocked to its core because some photographer had a sip from the Stanley Cup when the team was good enough to offer it.

Big Audiences for NHL Video Online

From Business Wire:

After Tuesday night’s triple-overtime thriller during Stanley Cup Final Game 5 between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Detroit Red Wings, on Wednesday National Hockey League (NHL) fans consumed more streaming video at NHL.com than any other single day in the history of the site.

On Wednesday, fans flocking to the NHL Network Online, and tuning to the Game Highlights Channel presented by Verizon Wireless, consumed 50 percent more streaming video than NHL.com’s previous daily record. The achievement is particularly notable because the amount of highlight video consumed in the wake of Game 5 eclipsed nights when the NHL has had 15 games being played across North America.

Game Day with Michel Therrien

Q.      Coach, can you talk about how proud you are, as a head coach, of the effort that your guys showed in Game 5, you had guys with broken noses and injuries, and seeing them come back and Max making the goal, is that the most proud you’ve been of a team in your coaching career?

COACH MICHEL THERRIEN: They showed a lot of character, there’s no doubt about that. And they see the prize. There’s a lot of sacrifice. It’s nice to get the reward, and they deserve it. It was a game that could go to both sides. We capitalized on the power play. And we get a high stick in the face.

But there’s no doubt, this is a team that faced adversity through the course of the season. And it was not any different last game.

Is NBC Beating CBC in Hockey Coverage?

From James Deacon at AOL Sports Canada,

The unthinkable has happened.

Hockey Night in Canada, the absolute gold standard in hockey broadcasting for generations, is being matched - and in some aspects beaten - in its coverage of the Stanley Cup Finals.

By NBC, no less. An American network.

It’s sacrilege to even suggest such a thing. Hockey fans expect HNIC to be the best because, well, it always has been.

A Polite Dismissal

From Adam Proteau at The Hockey News:

I think comedian George Carlin is one of the great minds of our time. And one of my favorite bits of his centers around the needless softening/wimpification of language. That was on display again Tuesday, when the Tampa Bay Lightning sent out an e-mail announcing head coach (and preferred target of this space) John Tortorella “will not return” to the team.

I suppose it was just too hurtful to say the guy was dismissed. Perhaps the next franchise that fires a coach can do the Bolts one better and issue a press release that reads, “Coach X will be coaching the team next season (in spirit only).”

It’s funny that Proteau mentions this. When we first got the press release about the Tortorella story, it did make me pause for a moment.

Tuesday with Osgood, Draper, Rafalski & Lidstrom

Q. Chris, could you talk about the mood of the team, maybe compare it as it is right now as to maybe immediately following the end of last night’s game?

CHRIS OSGOOD: We were all right after the game. We played hard. It was another great game. We just fell in the wrong end. That’s the way we looked at it. It was an end to end game. We had plenty of chances. It just didn’t happen. Sometimes it’s a game of bounces. It didn’t go our way, but we managed to fight back.

It didn’t happen. We have another opportunity tomorrow night, and that’s what we’re looking forward to.

A Dream Series Still Possible

From Terry Frei at ESPN,

In prime time, this could have been an effective infomercial for the NHL and the sport in the United States on NBC, from Game 3 and beyond.

It still can be—if the Penguins stop looking for conspiracy theories, cease being so paranoid about the officiating and can overcome what in some cases seems to be a curious lack of focus, as in Malkin’s case (in the series with the Cup on the line). Maybe, even if it ends Monday night, if the Penguins stop looking like a team that can’t yet handle the ultimate pressures, this still can go down as a great series. If they extend it, it truly can be…

A dream series.

NBC Dropped the Ball

From Greg Wyshynski at Puck Daddy,

The biggest disappointments in Game 4 ... well, I was going to say it was the strange lack of fire from the Penguins during stretches; but in reality, and without a doubt, they were found in NBC’s broadcast.

While it was nice the telecast acknowledged the tragedy, failing to show the moment of silence before the game in honor of Luc Bourdon was a disgrace and showed a massive misunderstanding of NBC’s hockey audience. The death of an NHL player is a rather atypical occurrence; a moment of silence before a Stanley Cup finals game for a fallen peer is extraordinary. It was a newsworthy moment, and NBC dropped the ball.

and more thoughts on game #4

Update 1:15pm ET: Also from Greg today, Darren McCarty’s thoughts from years back on the horrors of a nude Brendan Shanahan.

Well Deserved Praise

From Ben Wright at Blueland Blog,

I was told John Kincade mentioned it on the air yesterday so I don’t feel like I’m spilling the beans, but I wanted to be one of the first to congratulate Craig Custance on an upcoming career move. Craig is leaving the AJC to become the national hockey writer for The Sporting News. Craig has done a great job as the Thrashers beat writer and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working alongside him as both of us covered the Thrashers in our own ways. I’ve learned plenty from Craig and he’s been nice enough to let me jump in on interviews on many, many occasions.

KK passes on our congratulations as well. We’ve cited many, many stories from Craig over the past couple seasons and he’s always done a thorough job covering the Thrashers for both his newspaper and in the online format. We’ll look forward to his national perspective in The Sporting News.

View From the Inside

From Paul Kukla at NHL.com,

I have made some observations while covering all the action from games 1 and 2 in Detroit.

Chris Simpson, the NHL reporter for Versus is as down to earth as they come. Her work continues to improve and I enjoyed speaking with her yesterday about the game of hockey.

I can’t tell you how impressed I was with the folks from CBC. In the past I have communicated with them from time to time, but they went out of their way to make me feel comfortable when around them. Now if only I could get my hands on one of those CBC towels!

And if you’re not familiar with the exclusivity of those CBC HNIC towels, here is the reason why Paul will never get his hands on one… smile

Today with Michel Therrien

The media had some questions today for Penguins coach, Michel Therrien.  Transcript is below.

Q.  A couple of your players last night after the game said that they thought the style that you guys had used to great success to get to this point wasn’t working because of what Detroit was doing.  What can you do as a coach to switch up the strategy on this?  Does it need to be switched up?

COACH MICHEL THERRIEN:  First of all, you’re not coming to the Stanley Cup Final and start to change all your system.  It takes years that players feel comfortable.  That’s not the way it works.

You have give credit to the Red Wings.  They played well.  They played well in their building.  This is a tough place to play.  Yesterday, I liked our work ethic.  I think our intensity was there.  We have all the reasons in the world to be optimistic as well for Game No. 3.  As good as the Red Wings is in their building, we are as good at home, too.

The Hype Machine is Coming

From Michael Farber at SI.com’s Rinkside Blog,

The sound you heard after Detroit’s ditto 3-0 victory Monday was all the people clicking off their Versus telecast of the game, at least by folks who can find the NHL’s subterranean cable partner. NBC picks up the Stanley Cup final with Game 3, which looks like the network is getting the rights to air Titanic but only after the ship is halfway submerged. Still, The Peacock will be cranking up the hype machine at any moment:

“See Sidney Crosby, the future of the NHL, as he tries to escape the straitjacket of the Detroit Red Wings! Harry Houdini did it. Why not Sid? Can the Penguins win a game? Can the Penguins score a goal? See it live on NBC, Wednesday at 8 p.m.”

Of course, there have been soporific starts to recent Stanley Cup finals, including a pair of 3-0 shutouts in the opening two games of the 2003 match between Anaheim and New Jersey when apparently the Mighty Ducks were not informed the final had actually begun. The Ducks rallied at home and indeed the series dragged on for seven games, but the difference was these were not terribly appealing teams that operated in smaller markets.

and more on the Pens/Wings series thus far

Update 1:30pm ET: Darren Eliot, also at SI’s Rinkside Blog, writes on what Pittsburgh must do now to turn the series around.

Game #2 Audio from the Scrum

The Hockey News has been archiving audio from the winner’s dressing room after each game.

Go here to hear Scotty Bowman share his thoughts, then scroll down the page and you’ll find links to commentary from Niklas Lidstrom, Brad Stuart, Valteri Filpulla and Johan Franzen.

On a related note, a comment from Paul that I thought I’d pass on:

After Babcock finished his post game press conference, he met with Scotty for about ten minutes, one on one, going over the game.  How much of a help Bowman is to the Wings, we may never know, but it certainly cannot hurt to have Bowman use his “consultant” role to the fullest extent.
