Afternoon Line

Finally, the last thing I wanted to give you my thoughts on was our free agent signing this year – Michael Ryder.

I know in some circles we’ve been criticized for paying the money we paid to Michael.

We saw him on numerous occasions (he being in the same division as us), and I’ve seen him on a number of occasions prior to that with Ottawa. He’s a player that we made an organizational decision on to bring into our mix, and I don’t feel the need to justify or to address the criticisms that we’ve been given on signing him. At the end of the day, as a management team, we’re judged on these decisions and we’ll be judged on this one. We were and are excited to get Michael, as he’s a young player who can score goals and competes hard. We feel he’s really going to fit into our mix, and we’re going to have some success with him.

Ryder Hopes To Rebound In Boston

from Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe,

Ryder, 28, will travel south to Boston next week, checking out places to live after signing on with the Bruins as an unrestricted free agent July 1, getting a $12 million payday (over the next three seasons). After back-to-back 30-goal seasons with the Montreal Canadiens, he slumped to a career low of 14 in 2007-08, the hard-hitting onetime sniper becoming a forgotten part in Guy Carbonneau’s up-tempo bleu-blanc-rouge offense.

“A weird year, I’ll tell you that,” said Ryder, sitting in the lobby of a downtown hotel last week, not far from the condo he owns here. “I started out on a line [with top forwards Saku Koivu and Chris Higgins], got pushed back in the lineup, and then all of a sudden, I was out of the lineup.

“To be honest, I still don’t know what happened. All I ever heard from the coaches was, ‘Shoot the puck . . . work hard . . . it will all work out.’ But . . .”

Ryder Was Wanted

from Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe,

“Claude played a big factor based on his relationship with him,” Chiarelli said. “They have a real good relationship and trust. Cam spoke about the city and the growing emergence of the Bruins, how we’re trying to turn things around. He’s seen that firsthand. He liked what he saw.”

According to Chiarelli, Montreal granted exclusive negotiating rights to Ryder to an undisclosed team prior to free agency. Chiarelli said there were at least two other teams chasing Ryder.

Did Gainey Find His Impact Player

from Jay Onrait of TSN,

Now Gainey is faced with a truly difficult decision and less than a week to make it.

If Ryder was the cog that would lead Montreal to land a world-class talent like Marian Hossa, it would be difficult for Gainey not to pull the trigger.

However, if a Ryder-for-Alex Tanguay deal was on the table, would it really make sense for Gainey to pull off such a deal with Flames GM Darryl Sutter? It’s hard to believe that whatever added offense Tanguay would provide, if any, would offset Ryder’s locker room presence. Not to mention the fact that the Newfoundland native appears to have re-discovered his scoring touch.

Could Ryder End Up In Florida

via On Frozen Pond,

Rumors have it that Montreal is shopping Michael Ryder, and I would think the Panthers have an interest with Ville Peltonen out a substantial—six/eight weeks—bit of time with his broken foot. Ryder has scored 30 goals the past two seasons, but is struggling so much this season he’s been a healthy scratch. Ryder has three goals and seven assists this season.

He hasn’t scored a goal since Nov. 16 at Buffalo and hasn’t so much as recorded a point since getting two helpers against Boston on Nov. 17. Change of scenery—and some sunshine—might be what Ryder needs.

Ryder Seeing Bench Time

from the Montreal Gazette,

“Nothing is happening with him on the ice,” Carbonneau explained. “We felt like we needed to win the game, so I went with the guys I thought could help us do that. I was trying to switch some lines and trying to create something. I was looking for a spark.”

Ryder, who has been the Canadiens’ top goal-scorer in each of the past two seasons with 30, played 11:35 Tuesday night....

“I don’t think it’s time to panic,” said Ryder, who had four goals at this point last season.

“There haven’t been too many games when our line hasn’t created some chances and there are other top scorers who have scored only three or four goals.”

Ryder Has Tough Summer In Newfoundland

from the CP via Yahoo,

Michael Ryder may be looking for two new homes next summer.

The Montreal Canadiens sniper is on a one-year contract that can make him an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

And he’s pondering whether to continue spending the off-season at home in Newfoundland after a second summer of vandalism against his home and his car in St. John’s.

The 27-year-old had his car fire-bombed in one incident and pelted with eggs in another over the off-season. His house had been paint-balled and a car in front of his house vandalized the summer before.
