Cammalleri Signs with Canadiens, 5 Years

According to Sportsnet’s trade tracker, Mike Cammalleri has been signed by the Montreal Canadiens for 5 years, $6 million per year.

Update 8:07 pm ET: From the Canadiens --

The Habs weren’t the only NHL team trying to woo the shifty winger, who is coming off a career year with the Flames that saw him notch a career-high 39 goals and 82 points this past season.

“There were about four or five teams interested, but Bob Gainey showed interest right away,” admitted Cammalleri. “I’ve got a ton of respect for Bob Gainey and Jacques Martin. The Canadiens wanted me and showed me the commitment I was looking for.”

Flames Still Confident

from Scott Cruickshank of the Calgary Herald,

Dropped into a slippery series hole, frustrated by otherworldly netminding, playoff light growing ever dimmer, Michael Cammalleri insisted he isn’t depressed.

He feels...well . . . fortunate. Blessed even.

“Our mindset is--we better thank our lucky stars that we’re good enough to beat anybody, even down two-oh,” Cammalleri said Saturday after the Calgary Flames fell 3-2--again--to the Chicago Blackhawks in the National Hockey League’s first-round series. “We’re not a team that’s going to get buried. We’ve made it hard on ourselves. We would have liked for that not to have happened . . . but thank goodness this group is confident enough to beat anybody.

“We’ve got five games left-- we have to get four wins.”

Odds Are Cammalleri Will Leave Calgary

from George Johnson at ESPN,

“I like it here. I enjoy the city. This is a contending team and should be for quite a while. What’ll happen? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.”

Cammalleri is being coy. But the Cammy Quandary is the hot topic in Calgary these days. It seems as if he has just arrived, yet already is preparing to become an unrestricted free agent July 1. On short notice, the University of Michigan product has become one of the most popular players in a town that reveres its hockey stars like Aztec gods.

But there is bad that goes with the good. He should by all rights turn in that 13 stitched on the back of his sweater for a “$$.” Every time Cammalleri scores another goal, the sound you hear in the distance is his personal cash register going ka-ching!.

That bittersweet sound must be driving GM Darryl Sutter slightly mad.

Cammalleri Price Keeps Rising

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,

When the Flames acquired Cammalleri from the Los Angeles Kings, they understood there was a chance they might only keep him for one year, at which point he could leave as an unrestricted free agent (and with the dollars tied up in Kiprusoff, Iginla and Dion Phaneuf, there may not be a lot left over for Cammalleri).

It doesn’t mean they’ll trade him either.

The reality is this: If you’re a good team, and this year, Calgary is a good team, you don’t trade an important puzzle piece just because your chances of re-signing him next year may be negligible.

Cammalleri One Of The New Guys In Calgary

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,

“We had guys, to be quite honest, after March 1 we didn’t know they were on our team any more — and they were pretty high-profile guys,” Sutter said bluntly. “From a personnel standpoint, I think we’ve lacked those tough-area guys the last couple of years, which nobody talks about. Everybody wants to talk about skill. We went to more skill after the lockout; and we had more skill, but maybe we didn’t have enough of a compete level at the top end of our team.

“I think we can work with these [new] guys. They want to play here. They’re good-sized kids who can skate and score dirty goals. I like that about them.”

Cammalleri saw the move to Calgary as an opportunity for a fresh start.

What’s Cooking Mike?

from Steven Noble of the Calgary Sun,

Mike Cammalleri has taken his Italian heritage and his family’s tomato sauce with him wherever he’s gone.

Now the new Flames sniper is looking forward to bringing it to Calgary—along with his goal-scoring touch.

“My dad has two brothers so those families and our family would all go to my grandparents’ house, we’d get 20 bushels of tomatoes and go in the garage from eight in the morning until six at night,” he says, recalling one of his favourite traditions.

All Cammalleri

from Inside the Kings,

Q: If you had to wager a guess; are you a member of the Los Angeles Kings next season?

Cammalleri: I would think so. My contract says that I am and I haven’t heard otherwise.

Q: Do you want to be back?

Cammalleri: I definitely want to be a King. It will be interesting to see what we do.

Cammalleri Activated

via the LA Kings,

The Los Angeles Kings have activated forward Michael Cammalleri from the injured reserve list, Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi announced today.

Cammalleri, 25, has missed the last 17 Kings games due to a rib injury.  He has played in 36 games this season and has 29 points (15-14=29).  His 15 goals rank third on the team, 29 points rank fifth and nine power play goals rank second (tied with Anze Kopitar).

LA Kings on Carson Daly

Derek Armstrong and Mike Cammalleri were on the Carson Daly show last night, (though it might have been a rerun? I’m not sure).  Anyway, here’s their appearance, including an entertaining revelation about Armstrong at about the 5 minute mark that might keep you from inviting him over for dinner…

The Quiet Goal Scorer

from Pierre LeBrun of the CP via Yahoo,

Quick, name the NHL’s leading goal-scorer heading into the weekend.

Rick Nash? Nope. Dany Heatley? Nope. Alexander Ovechkin? Nope.

Try Mike Cammalleri. The diminutive Los Angeles Kings forward has 10 goals in 11 games, but you’d be hard-pressed to find too many hockey fans who knew that. Despite leading the Kings in scoring last season with a career-high 80 points (34-46) in 81 games, Cammalleri doesn’t seem to get the notoriety he deserves around the league.

Early Beliefs

from Spector at his Fox Sports Blog,

Who would’ve believed:

Mike Cammalleri of the LA Kings would be the league’s leading goal scorer? As of this writing he leads all scorers with ten goals. He’s an emerging talent and could be poised to become a big star. Right now, he’s outshining teammates Anze Kopitar and Alex Frolov, as well as more big name “snipers” like Vincent Lecavalier, Dany Heatley, and Alexander Ovechkin.

more would you have believed…
