Mike Danton Takes Heroic Action

Mike Danton played the hero in his opening game of the Swedish league.
The former NHL player, who served five years behind bars for a failed murder-for-hire plot, rushed to the aid of IFK Ore teammate Marcus Bengtsson, who was convulsing on the ice after a hard hit in Sunday’s season-opener.
Danton, 30, was released from prison in 2009 and then played two seasons with Saint Mary’s Huskies in Canadian university hockey before signing this summer with IFK Ore, which plays in the third tier of Sweden’s pro system.
“One of the luxuries of my prison experience afforded me to take a first aid course and become certified in first aid response,” Danton wrote in his blog on the website of DT, a Swedish newspaper.
According to Danton’s blog, Bengtsson took a late hit with about 14 minutes left in the game against Soderhamn/Ljusne. He lay on the ice suffering convulsions for six or seven minutes.

ESPN’s Interview with Mike Danton Tonight

A reminder of this broadcast, which we posted about several days ago (*link includes a short video clip).
On Tuesday, May 3, at 7 p.m. ET, ESPN’s award-winning primetime news magazine will retell the Mike Danton odyssey, including the first interview with Danton’s mentor and agent David Frost (aka. Jim McCauley).
Mike Danton’s dreams seemed realized – a promising NHL career, wealth, a nice home – until a failed murder-for-hire plot landed him in jail for almost five years. Danton claimed the intended target was his father, Steve Jefferson, whom he says abused him when he was a child. The FBI believes the target was Danton’s youth coach, agent and surrogate father, David Frost. The two men Danton approached at different times to carry out the murder, St. Louis strip club bouncer Ron Jones and Justin Levi Jones, a police dispatcher who tipped off the FBI, point to Frost as the target.
The episode prompts Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun, to ask on Twitter:
“Wonder what will get bigger TV numbers in the US tonight? Playoff hockey or Mike Danton lying to ESPN.”

Mike Danton’s dreams seemed realized – a promising NHL career, wealth, a nice home – until a failed murder-for-hire plot landed him in jail for almost five years. Danton claimed the intended target was his father, Steve Jefferson, whom he says abused him when he was a child. The FBI believes the target was Danton’s youth coach, agent and surrogate father, David Frost. Now out of prison, Danton has turned his life around. E:60’s Jeremy Schaap reports on Danton’s attempts to move forward and rebuild his life while exorcising the demons of his past. But the convoluted details of the murder plot, his murky relationship with Frost and the contentious connection with his family still linger.
After repeatedly refusing to speak with the media, Frost sat down for an E:60 interview to discuss his part in Mike Danton’s strange odyssey.

A Look At Mike Danton Today

Danton’s major is psychology. He’s reading Jung, Piaget and Freud—“I think Freud’s the one who needed psychoanalysis,” he says—studying the mysteries of the human mind. “It’s amazing how important the brain is, how it controls so much,” he says. “We do this because of that, that because of this. Just fascinating.”
He entered school with vague ambitions of returning to his previous career, that of a grinding forward in the NHL. Although he still would one day like to play professional hockey again, now his long-term goal is to earn a Ph.D. in psychology. His professors say that’s no pipe dream. “He’s an absolutely outstanding student. He handed in a paper that I can freely say is one of the best I’ve gotten in my years of teaching,” says St. Mary’s psychology professor Lucie Kocum, who taught Danton’s research methods course. “He has a self-exacting approach, but he brings this exuberance to class.”
Is it too simplistic, Danton is asked, to assume that he’s enthralled with psychology because of everything he’s been through?
“Yeah,” he says. “But if I were you, I’d put it in the story anyway. I mean, how can you not?”

Mike Danton Thinking Of A Return To The NHL

One year after stepping back onto the ice at a frigid university arena, Mike Danton is dreaming of a bigger return to the game of hockey.
The former NHLer says he still wants to rejoin the fabled league, more than five years after he was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder in the United States.
“I would obviously (like to return),” he said after practice Wednesday with the Saint Mary’s Huskies. “I think anybody at this level would want to play at the highest level possible for them. For me, that would be the NHL.
“I’d like to get back to playing there. To be honest with you, yeah, it’s in my mind. It’s something I’d like to do.”

Danton Returns To School & Hockey

It appears that former NHL player Mike Danton is preparing to make a return to the ice.
Danton has been cleared by the president of St. Mary’s University to enroll at the school, and when that process is complete, the forward is expected to play hockey for the university.
The school tells TSN that the only details still to be worked out before his admission is complete surround the conditions of his parole, which should be settled either Monday or Tuesday this week.

The Mike Danton Interview

Believe him or not, this much we know for sure about Mike Danton: He was, and quite likely still is, one terribly messed-up individual.
That is the overriding impression left by the former St. Louis Blues forward in his supposedly tell-all interview with Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet, which aired in an hour-long special Wednesday night.
As much as Danton, now 29, presents himself as a man who has learned some life lessons the hard way and is finally approaching normalcy, one is left with the uneasy feeling he continues to delude himself, as well as those who might take his words at face value.

Mike Danton came across as calm, composed and factually challenged—some might even say delusional—in the much-awaited hour-long interview broadcast on Rogers Sporstnet last night that was supposed to tell his side of the story.
Danton told his story of how he went to prison for a muddled murder-for-hire attempt. He just didn’t tell the story.

Then, when our cameraman and I shut off our cellphones, Danton told us he’d be leaving his on. Frost wanted to listen to our interview from the other end, so Danton dialled him, put the phone in his pocket and told us he was ready to begin. Never seen anyone else do that before or since. (Now I should point out that Danton was as polite as possible. He was friendly, smiling and answered all of our questions without any issue. Even when declining our footage request, there was no hint of rudeness.)
Things really spiralled out of control afterward.

Danton’s Father Speaks Out On Parole For His Son

There is no nice way of saying this: Mike Danton lied to the National Parole Board yesterday.
He told a whopper—and they bought it hook, line and sinker.
The former hockey player, imprisoned for his bizarre and awkward role in a failed murder-for-hire plot, told the Parole Board that the target of his ire was not his disgraced agent, David Frost, but his estranged father, Steve Jefferson.
That is, in a word, nonsense.
“I’m so mad it’s not funny,” Steve Jefferson said yesterday. “I don’t know if you can print what I’m really feeling.
“I can’t believe the judicial system ... I want people to know that the system has failed us again and again and again. One of the conditions of his parole is he is not allowed to speak to me, but he is allowed to see Dave Frost with his parole officer’s approval. Does any of this make sense to anybody?”

Mike Danton Gets Parole

Former NHL player Mike Danton was granted full parole on Friday morning and will be out by Monday or Tuesday at the latest.
Danton, a native of Brampton, Ont., pleaded guilty in 2004 in the U.S. in a failed murder-for-hire plot that allegedly targeted David Frost, who went on to become Danton’s mentor and agent.

Mike Danton Edges Closer to Freedom

The former pro hockey player imprisoned in a murder-for-hire plot targeting his Kingston, Ont., agent has taken a significant step toward freedom.
The Kingston Whig-Standard reports Mike Danton has been transferred to minimum-security Pittsburgh Institution in Kingston.
Inmates are moved to minimum-security prisons as preparation for release into the community either on parole or through automatic release after serving two-thirds of the sentence.
The CP notes that Danton has been eligible for full parole since he returned to Canada back in March.

Report- Mike Danton Could Be A Free Man Soon

TSN has learned that former NHL player Mike Danton, who has been serving time in a Federal prison in the United States, is back in Canada and could be a free man very shortly.
The Brampton, Ontario native pled guilty to “murder-for-hire” charges in November of 2004. He has served over four years of his seven and a half year sentence in a Minnesota prison. After petitioning to be moved to a Canadian prison, Danton finally got his wish on March 19th as he was transferred to Kingston Penitentiary.
Under Canadian law, Danton is now eligible for full parole.

David Frost Set to Stand Trial

A judge in Napanee, Ont., on Monday dismissed a bid by former hockey coach and player agent David Frost to have sex-related charges against him dropped.
Frost faces six charges of sexual exploitation involving four teenagers dating from his days as a hockey coach in neighbouring Deseronto, in the early 1990s.
Frost, 40, will next appear in court on Aug. 25, and his trial is scheduled to begin in Napanee on Oct. 14. He is also facing trial next April on fraud charges over the alleged illegal use of a credit card belonging to jailed St. Louis player Mike Danton.
Danton, a Brampton, Ont., native and former St. Louis Blues forward, was sentenced to seven and a half years in a U.S. federal prison in November 2004 for plotting to have Frost killed.
