Milbury Keeps Talking
by Paul on 10/19/09 at 11:28 AM ET

from William Houston of Truth & Rumours,
The problem is, outside of Cherry and also Al Strachan, you are unlikely to hear a Hockey Night commentator criticize anyone in a position of NHL power.
The worst for this is Mike Milbury who is outspoken only in the sense that he passionately defends the establishment. If ever in his TV career Milbury has made a comment that ran counter to the official thinking of the NHL or club officials, we missed it.
He likes fighting and thinks opponents of fighting are girls. He thinks the NHL Players’ Association inflicted the worse atrocity known to mankind by firing executive director Paul Kelly, whom, the guess here, was viewed by the NHL’s hierarchy as the perfect guy to be ensconced as the players’ leader.
Milbury’s toeing the company line, of course, would have absolutely nothing to do with his hope and aspiration of getting back into the NHL as a coach or general manager.

CBC Receives Complaint From Gay Rights Group
by Paul on 01/29/09 at 09:06 AM ET

from William Houston of the Globe and Mail,
A gay rights group has complained to the CBC about the use of the term “pansification” by Hockey Night in Canada commentators.
Hockey Night commentator Mike Milbury coined the expression to describe how the NHL would be softened should the league heed calls to ban fighting. He has used “pansification” at least twice on Hockey Night this season, in November and again on Jan. 17. His colleague, Don Cherry, has also made reference to it.
Egale Canada, a gay advocacy organization, protested last week. But Scott Moore, the head of CBC Sports, said through a network spokesman yesterday that commentators are free to make their own decisions whether to use the expression.

Milbury to Join Hockey Night in Canada
by Alanah McGinley on 07/21/08 at 03:38 PM ET

From CBC:
Hockey Night in Canada will welcome a familiar face and opinionated hockey mind next season, with Mike Milbury joining the show as an analyst.
Milbury, who has spent over 30 years in the NHL as a player, coach and general manager, will also be a regular contributor to the Hot Stove segment on HNIC.
“We’re very pleased to welcome Mike to our talented broadcast team,” HNIC executive producer Sherali Najak said in a statement. “His experience as an NHL player and executive is reflected in an entertaining on-air style. We look forward to his honest opinions and knowledge on what’s happening around the NHL on a weekly basis.”
Update 3:53pm ET: Speaking of Milbury’s “entertaining style,” that sort of demands we point to this video (embedded below). The footage is terrible, but somewhere in that muck you can see #28 beating a hockey fan with his own shoe…

Milbury Talks To Leonsis

from Ted’s Take,
I reached out to Mike Milbury last night via NHL commissioner Gary Bettman. Gary called me and we spoke. And then Mike called me and we spoke late last night.
Mike calmly explained that he meant no harm. He had a slip of the tongue when trying to start a commentary about our play. He meant to say the Washington Caps but instead he said the Washington Craps. He laughed and then stated we weren’t playing well at that time in the game and we were playing like the “Crapitals”. He was trying to be funny and trying to recover - on air - and he misspoke.

I had the pleasure of speaking with NBC studio analyst Mike Milbury this morning, previewing the Ducks/Wings game on NBC this Sunday at 3:30pm. We also discussed a few other topics in the NHL, including the trade deadline.
The KK crew thanks Mike for taking the time to talk about the game and we hope you enjoy the interview.

Milbury Makes Jagr Mad
by Paul on 01/19/08 at 06:08 PM ET

from Watchdog Blog at Newsday,
Spies in the TV and/or hockey worlds tell me that Jaromir Jagr was so mad about recent comments from NBC analyst Mike Milbury about him that he refused to sit for interviews with NBC producers sent out this week to gather interviews for Sunday’s Bruins-Rangers tilt.
NBC got several other prominent Blueshirts on tape, but not Jagr.

Ice Level Game Call
by Paul on 11/16/07 at 06:46 AM ET
Comments (3)
from William Houston of the Globe and Mail,
TSN will use a new play-by-play configuration for tonight’s Montreal Canadiens-Buffalo Sabres telecast. Chris Cuthbert and Glenn Healy will call the game at ice level, which they’ve done before, but this time Pierre McGuire will provide additional analysis from the broadcast booth as an “eye in the sky.”
TSN’s Mike Milbury called the appointment of Brett Hull, who has no managerial experience, to the position of interim co-general manager of the Dallas Stars “an insult” to all NHL general managers.
