Take Some Time Off Mike

from Mike Heika of the Dallas Stars Blog at the Dallas Morning News,

One of the most beloved and yet most controversial figure on the Stars, Mike Modano certainly inspires strong opinions.

He recently turned 38, and recently told The Ticket he wants to play both of the remaining years of his contract. That’s quite a switch from not being sure he wanted to play even one more season, but that is the way of Modano. He is a great player who actually loves the game of hockey, but doesn’t love the grind of the season.

So how do the Stars take advantage of that? In my opinion, I think they need to give him forced vacations.

Modano’s Past & Future

From Tim Cowlishaw the Dallas Morning News,

“I came into the league and saw guys that were 32 and I said, “That’s not me. I’ll be done before then,’ ” he said. “Then 32 felt like it came and got here overnight. Now I hear young guys talking about not wanting to put in the work and I think, “Are you kidding me?’ “

Modano said he considered announcing his retirement at different points during the regular season when he was frustrated with his play.

“The first quarter of the season was really rough on me,” he said, recalling his struggles to surpass Phil Housley as the highest-scoring U.S.-born player in league history. “There were probably more times I didn’t feel I was as competitive as I wanted to be than there had been in the past.”

Stars Have “Mo”

from Jennifer Floyd Engel of the Star-Telegram,

Guys like him may not walk away. It doesn’t mean they do not think about it, especially when they are 37 going on 38 and being asked to embrace the role of “the old guy.”

“I think about it a lot now lately, certainly when you have gone this deep,” Modano said. “And so you wonder if this will be it.”

If so, if this indeed turns into his final season, then this West Finals against Detroit might well be his last kick at the Cup. Like .001 percent of hockey experts give the Stars a flying Fig Newton of a chance in this series.

They are underestimating this Stars team.

Modano Ready for San Jose

From Willa Ford (Mike Modano’s wife) at her NHL.com blog:

We’ve handled one big, strong, quick-skating tough team, and now we have another. But this goaltender is up for the Vezina, and they have potentially an even greater set of forwards to throw against our young D.

(I said to Mike this morning, “This goaltender probably isn’t going to like you very much in the next few days and he replied with “He’s a great guy off of the ice, but no, hopefully he isn’t happy with me when this series is over.”)

To top it off, the San Jose arena is one of the loudest and most violent crowds that I’ve ever seen in person. It worries me, but for some reason Mike loves it. He said he hopes they boo him, he hopes they give it to his goaltender and his team and his teammates because it drives him…

NASCAR’s Jimmie Johnson Skates With Modano

From the Dallas Stars,

NASCAR superstar Jimmie Johnson is accustomed to wheeling his Hendrick Motorsports ride around the track at breakneck speeds.

His skating skills are more modest, however.

On Thursday, Johnson learned that lacing on the skates and practicing with Stars center Mike Modano can be a humbling experience. Johnson hadn’t skated since he was a boy in Southern California, and he was pleased to simply be able to hesitantly glide around the rink at Deja Blue Arena in Frisco following a Stars practice without falling on his backside.

Modano Thinks A Little Ahead

from the Star-Telegram,

Mike Modano watched Brett Favre break down and weep at his retirement press conference last week and suddenly had this out-of-body experience.

He could see himself sitting there, tears running down his face, too.

“When it’s my time, I’ll probably bawl like a baby,” Modano said Monday on the eve of his induction into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in Waco.

The irony is that the last time we saw Modano cry, he was standing in front of his locker in Buffalo in the early hours of June 20, 1999, sobbing almost uncontrollably as he tried to get his mind around the fact that he and the Stars had just won the Holy Grail of hockey, the Stanley Cup.

Modano’s Uncertain Future

From Mike Heika at The Dallas Morning News,

The face of the franchise has led the team since the Minnesota North Stars drafted him first overall in 1988. But with Ribeiro, 27, signed up at $5 million a year, the career of Modano, 37, appears in flux.

“To tell you the truth, I’m not really sure what my role on the team is,” Modano said Tuesday before the Stars left town for tonight’s game in Chicago. “I think it’s changing.”

The Stars have pondered Modano’s transition for a few seasons. He could follow the pattern of Joe Niuewendyk and spend the last two years of his contract as the No. 2 center – complete with a gold watch and Conn Smythe Trophy.

But there’s a problem with that scenario.

Voros Draws Comparison To Modano

from the Pioneer Press,

Aaron Voros is no Mike Modano.

If the light’s just right, though, Voros could almost pass for him.

Modano, the highest-scoring American-born player in National Hockey League history and a popular North Stars player during his early days in the NHL, is expected to be a focal point tonight when the Minnesota Wild play the Stars in Dallas….

The uncanny physical resemblance between the two was first given a name by journeyman defenseman Dan McGillis, who started calling Voros “Modo” when the two played in the New Jersey Devils’ system at Albany, N.Y., in 2005-06 and in Lowell, Mass., in 2006-07 before Voros was acquired by the Wild on March 1.

President Bush Calls Modano

from the Dallas Morning News,

The Stars center was on the ice playing the Phoenix Coyotes when a call came from the White House. So he had to wait until Friday morning to take the call in which President Bush offered congratulations to Modano for becoming the all-time American-born point scorer in NHL history.

“He was great,” Modano said. “He just told me how special it was and how I should be proud.”

Modano Gets it Done

From the CP via TSN,

Dallas centre Mike Modano broke Phil Housley’s NHL record for career points by an American-born player with two quick goals in the opening minutes of the Stars’ game against the San Jose Sharks on Wednesday night.

Modano’s two goals in the first 4:24 gave him 1,233 points in 1,253 regular-season games _ 242 games fewer than Housley played.

Housley Feels For Modano

From Mike Heika at The Dallas Morning News,

Phil Housley feels for Mike Modano.  He thought his record would be broken earlier in the season, too.

Housley, the owner of the NHL’s all-time scoring record by an American-born player, has been waiting for the phone call telling him that Modano had eclipsed his total.

But Modano’s slow start has allowed the record chase to drag on a bit.

“It’s tough on him, I can tell,” Housley said by phone as he vacationed in Arizona on Friday. “But I know he’s going to get it. It’s just a matter of time.”

Modano Has No Plans To Waive NTC

from the Dallas Stars Blog at the Dallas Morning News,

Called up Mike Modano and asked him about the Eklund rumor that he might waive his no-trade clause for a chance to move somewhere else, and Modano said he has not thought about that and doesn’t plan on asking for a trade or waiving his no-trade clause.

“Yeah, I heard about that, too. It’s not true,’’ he said. “I plan on being there tomorrow and the day after that and the day after that. I’m just going to keep showing up and work myself through this.’‘

USA Hockey Milestones in Reach Tonight

From Mike Heika at The Dallas Morning News,

Tonight could be a memorable night for USA Hockey.

Stars center Mike Modano sits two points shy of tying Phil Housley for the most points by an American-born player. San Jose forward Jeremy Roenick is two goals shy of becoming only the third American-born player to record 500 goals in his career. Roenick said he’d like to see both milestones attained on the same night.

“It would be nice, because Mike would be in the building,” said Roenick, who contemplated retirement in the off-season. “He’s one of the guys who told me, ‘Hey, you’ve got to stick around,’ which meant the world to me.”

Modano is Chasing History

With 507 goals, 719 assists and 1,226 career regular-season points in 17 seasons, Mike Modano of the Dallas Stars enters the 2007-08 season just seven points from establishing a record for NHL points by a U.S.-born player.

Modano is attempting to become just the sixth player in history to hold the U.S. mark; Phil Housley has been the all-time leader since March 13, 1999.

Below is a Mike Modano tribute video, produced by the NHL as the Dallas Star enters his 18th NHL season.
